    Those photos are awesome Robbie. I love how the concrete sign is the only concrete in the photo, the leading lines in the harvested field, and the ice forming on puddles - all wrapped perfectly in a square package.

    Very nice video on my favorite format, the square. Thank you for taking the time to make it.
    One minor note: you refer to Gordon Parks’ technique as improficiencies, meaning a lack of skills, or ineptitude. I’m sure you’d agree that Parks is hardly inept when it comes to photography and filmmaking.
    Then if it’s not his skill level or knowledge of how to make an in focus photograph, what would cause these imperfections (a term you perhaps meant to use, given your further comments)?
    Could be situational. Either limits of available light, and/or slow ISO forcing a slow shutter speed. Or maybe the scene in front of him, dynamic and in flux, required more of a “shoot from the hip” approach. Or perhaps it was a deliberate choice he made in those photographs to create a visual disquiet or discord for the viewer to reflect the content of his photographs.
    Anyways, a really nice video. Thank you for sharing. Hope you found your way back to that crossroad!

    I have set up aspect ratio on one of my custom buttons so I can switch to 1:1 quite quickly. I did this just for the fun of it.
    Here are my first experiences.
    You definitely have to have square in your viewfinder, it is no good trying to get good square photos by just cropping another aspect ratio to square afterwards.
    Everything said in the video is100% the case. Square is a more concentrated look at things. It is more demanding than one might think and lends itself to all sorts of close-ups.
    To show square on a TV screen you are usually better off putting a frame around the image.
    What looks very nice is a square format collage consisting of 2X2 square format images. This is almost an independent art form. It is really great fun to spend an afternoon taking four widely differing square pictures specifically to this aim and then shifting them around until you get the ideal arrangement inside your 2X2 field.
    (You usually get the first three images with no trouble at all. The fourth can, however, be quite difficult - that is, until you get something that really gives your gallery-worthy work of art the finishing touch.)

    @03:58 you state parks used shallow depth of field for the mother with daughter outside cinema. You say this gave separation. In reality that is incorrect. Parks used a 4x5 speed graflex. What you think is shallow DOF is not the same as background separation, something youtubers usually confuse & conflate (they are not synomous). If he had opened the lens all the way nothing would be in focus. This background separation has nothing to do with aperture, which was f8 or higher (easily seen). This is the large format look. Please read up in it.

    • @RobbieMaynardCreates
      @RobbieMaynardCreates  Год назад

      I agree with understanding how different apertures effect DOF but Im not sure if I understand your stance on shallow depth of field vs background seperation. Shooting wide open gives you a shallow depth of field that will seperate the subject from the background. If they are not synonymous, that statement wouldn't true.

    • @jpjast5739
      @jpjast5739 Год назад

      @@RobbieMaynardCreates But Parks did not use open aperture. The is f8 at least. 4x5 gives backgrpund separation without needing to open aperture. This is not falloff or dof as you understand it. 35mm you have to open aperture but you will never gwt background isolation because it is not created by using aperture. In other words, I knew parks pic was 4x5 because it is distinct. You can read up on it but dof and separation are distinct.

      @jpjast5739 Год назад

      @@RobbieMaynardCreates I am a professional & I don't have time to make videos. That is not education. If you are interested in learning then your first step is to put aside the videos (aka entertainment) & look at actual photographs (preferably negatives) in 35mm, medium & large format. You could also buy books that discuss photo fundamentals. You can doubt what I am saying or you can take the initiative & teach yourself this. It involves far less effort than drivng to town x & take pictures of a building. My fees btw start at 800 euros per hour. I do not work for free. The free tip I gave & will repeat is background separation is not the same as dof. It is precisely because 35mm lacks background separation guus like you are making the error of think you need to isolate the subject by opening the aperture. That blurs the background behind the subject by putting it out of focus almost entirely. Parks did not do that. Parks shot 4x5 and it has a 3d pop no 35mm can achieve beause it does not come from the idiotic hipster 'open aperture' trick. You have interesting work. You can elevate it by self study mate.
