Steve "Eye Watering" O'nions shooting up bangers at meth-taking speeds! Great vid!
Perhaps I need to shoot it at 120 FPS and slow it down in post 😀
Hi Steve, really tremendous photos in this one! I think you were really inspired. Even the Holga shots look great.
For me personally I also thought the editing was a little too fast-paced on this one and I prefer your more laid-back previous style. But of course you should make whatever videos you like the best, and I enjoyed this one too!
Thanks Martin, I need to find a happy medium for editing pace, something that keeps moving along without inducing a nose bleed 🙂
I like laid-back style too
The second Holga picture is sublime, the rest just wonderful.
Thanks Brian 🙂
Steve O’Nions the over-caffeinated version. Great stuff ☕️👍
‘This video was sponsored by Starbucks!’ 😀
Love this one! Epic landscapes with the Bronica! Arguably trumped with the Holga even!! Love the humor, and as always, love the sheep encounters. Three Thumbs Up!!!
I also think the Holga edged it Tony 🙂
What you said right off, Steve, is very useful to me; good for me to keep in mind when I am out and about. One may find oneself in a beautiful place with beauty all around, but that does not mean there is a composition to be had which is worth capturing and which does the place justice, or would even engage a viewer. I always, in the past, thought that if it is looking wonderful, the photo is easy. Not so. I have a bunch of nothing from some places to prove it to myself. I'm barely over the one minute mark and I already like this video. Thanks Steve.
Thanks James. Weather conditions that are nice to be out in don’t always translate well into photos. Bad weather is much easier to get good results with.
Wow Steve, you got some great shots this day; and with the Holga, too. You sir are one of the best examples of skill and knowledge over gear I have seen in recent times. With so many people complaining they can't take good photos because of the limitations of their gear, you are a wake up call they should pay attention to.
Thanks James, the Holga makes everything so much easier, hardly any decisions to make.
Looked like a superb weather day, without to many other people about.
It was a lovely day Stephen, definitely quieter than a weekend shoot.
I've enjoyed this craft of photography for going on 50 years now. Learned much over time, from other's work seen in person, in books, magazines, films and now on the computer screen. Watched a lot of RUclips over the last of years and your channel, sir, is among the best. Your pictures are superb! Thank you
Thank you Terence, that’s very kind of you.
As always interesting and informative. I know lots and lots of people love the look of the Holga. I never quite got the appeal. That is the beauty of photography--one gets to do what one enjoys and finds creative. Love the Bronica shots: setup, composition, and final product.
Thanks Erich, Holga’s really divide opinion, maybe that’s part of the appeal.
...what a genius!!! Your videos are absolutely inspiring and your pictures are breathtaking, thx!!!
Thanks Stephan 😊
Beautiful scenery, superb photography to match. Really lovely shots. Thank you.
Thanks as always 👍😊
It amazes me the sort of images you can squeeze out of that holga. More proof the it's not the machine, but the eye behind it.
I love Holgas and other cheap cameras Dann, effortless character in every shot.
Lovely work. Personally the first shot, of the twisted tree, is the most powerful. But all are great as usual!
Thanks Mark.
Hi Steve, I watched this video several times, and as always, I love the running commentary as well as the inserted text that reveals your future evaluation of what is occurring. You always add nice touches of humor, and the bits with local idioms and expressions add color to me as someone who is not from the UK ("chucking it down", "jambooties", etc.) I will add that I found it a little too fast-paced with quick cuts and freezes, and these drew attention to themselves and away from your photographic excursion. I know you are playing around with different editing styles, but I do love the slow and flowing pace of most of your videos. Your B-roll is exceptional as always. Thank you, I always appreciate seeing your videos!
Thanks Oscar, I’ll find a happy medium between frenetic and plodding, not a big fan of videos that run for more than about 10 minutes.
Those Hola shots were epic.
I liked them too Chris 😊
Zippy editing in this one
Oh yes!
Great video Steve. I really liked the pace of this video. It feels like you’ve experimented a bit with the way you put it together.👍🏼
Thanks Matt, I’m hoping I’ll get sponsorship from a strong filter coffee company 😀
sor far the best video I have seen from you. Cudos. Excellent work!
Thanks Klaus, it was fun to make 🙂
Sir, I really enjoy your videos and especially the images you capture. Beautiful!
Many thanks 😊
Thank you, another great video.
Thanks Richard.
Stunning, really must give the long lens a go more for landscape, I don’t use it enough
Excellent pictures - as always.
Thanks Jörg.
Fast and furious Steve///lol
😀
Another outstanding watch Steve cracking imagery throughout I shot my Bronica ETR yesterday first time in ages instantly remembered why the Bron is an absolute pleasure to shoot. The shot from the holga are impressive great watch cheers
Thanks Paul. I actually think the Holga suited the conditions better on that day.
Love it. Mildly jealous of your proximity to the district. Two ideas for potential videos: the books that have inspired you (either photography monographs or instructional books); large format - your 5x4 and 10x8 haven't got much love recently!
Thanks Paul. I’ve not actually shot with large format since September 2020, it’s a real hassle to use when vlogging.
This is what it's all about: having fun shooting beautiful scenery.
Exactly Henk 🙂
Great vid! Stunned by the Holga images.
They’re my favourites too Ian 👍
Great video and beautiful photos! Thank you for sharing!
You’re welcome Robert.
So much in this one Steve, you seemed to get lots in and I lapped it up. So many fantastic shots. Thanks Steve 👍
Thanks Mali, loving your recent Lakeland content 👍
@@SteveONions that means a lot Steve, thank you. Fancy a chat on a podcast? 🤔🙌
To be honest Mali I’m not very good at that sort of thing, thanks very much for the offer though. All the best - Steve.
@@SteveONions neither am I 🤣 no problem at all, thanks for the videos and belting insight.
Уникальный кадр спасибо удачи вам
Thank you!
Great video best yet
Thanks Toby 🙂
What a great day and location! Simply amazing! Thanks for the video and the photos Steve!
You’re welcome Andreas.
Like the video! Short and full of content! Perfect clip timing
Thanks Martin 👍
Great day. Great location. Great shots. And a great vlog Steve. Diolch!
Cheers Ray 🙂
Another super video Steve. I think all of your shots were great, but the reflection shot looked great in colour too!
Thanks David.
Loved this video Steve. Great images as well. Tempted to get a Holga for a bit of fun.
Go for it Peter but beware, you may find yourself questioning why you have more expensive cameras 😮
That overlook scene was made for my 6x17 format...so much to take in. Beautiful work, Steve.
Thank you 😊
Such a successful day out! Love the shot at 3:19, absolutely fantastic! Also really enjoy the videography in this one with the annotations
Glad you liked it David 👍
great photographs!
Thank you.
Much respect sr I love your videos
Thanks Ruben.
Certainly a lot packed into this video. The highlights on the left side of the trees on your last shot with the Bronica really set the subject off so nicely. And very happy to see you using the Holga again. I especially liked the last two images from it with all the lovely grain. I would love to see more from it, and your pinhole, again.
Thanks Bob and there’s more Holga and pinhole content on the way 🙂
The image at 2:15 is exquisite, Steve. Really enjoyed the Holga image at 4:07 too. Finally, the last two shots made for a wonderfully productive day of keepers. Bravo!
Thanks as always Morris.
A great day out with some excellent shots. I was very taken with the brief glimpse of the trig point and I thought the Holga rendering was very suitable. A good example of an image that works without needing to be sharp.
Totally agree David, blurred, underexposed and perfect for the subject 🙂
Perfect! I always watch these videos (even yours) at 1.25 or 1.5. Easy to slow down for an extra nice shot or technical detail. But most videos are basically a long wind-up for a short pitch. Slow or fast, I look forward to your next vlog.
Thanks Jim, I can imagine what this one must have looked like speeded up!
Nice stuff. Strangely for me I prefer the holga ones. 👌
Me too 😉
Vroom! Kept having to pause the video to digest and enjoy some wonderful photographs. Personally prefer a more laid back Steve O'Nions ;-). Though I tend to groan inwardly when I see a video from a favourite RUclipsr which is over 15 mins.
Thanks Richard, too much coffee when editing this one 😀
I most say this was the fastest rolling vid you made until now. But I like it a lot. And as always beautiful work. I most say i like the Holga ones the most. Please present them on your website or flickr so we can see the Photographs more in detail.
Thanks Ruud, I also preferred the Holga images. I need to sort out a better way of showing the full size images too.
Hello Steve 👋. Beautiful scene.
It happened to me many times . The best scenes come when we least expect it, When we are tired of our heavy and cumbersome equipment. If you didn't have that compact camera, I don't think you would have tried to capture that beautiful scene.
Regards 👍.
Definitely Mohammad, I hate missing shots and also the constant bag on bag off scenario of working with bigger cameras. Handheld and light is so liberating.
Wonderful insight. A few years ago I use to watch other (younger) RUclipsrs with their flashy cinematography, expensive Leica and Hasselblad XPan but after a while, it's bored me. Their photos and insight is not so inspiring, some even started to sounds pretentious. Just a parade of expensive cameras that I probably would never afford anyway. Steve is presenting his valuable knowledge that always makes me wanna get out from my comfort zone and start making beautiful photos.
Thanks Indra, I’m gravitating more and more towards cheap cameras that have real character.
I'm not sure I'm totally behind this new editing style, Steve...
Just set the playback speed at 0.75 - it’ll look like all the others 😊
Love your videos Steve. This one felt a bit too heavy on the transitions and zoom-ins though. Much love.
Thanks Ronan, it was tiring to edit it too 😀
Warning; do not watch this after drinking coffee, I think Steve had 4 pots before editing.
On the contrary John, you need to have drunk as much coffee as me, then it seems just fine 😄
That was nearly like a Yout Tube shortie or an IG story.. short, sharp n to the point. Some cracking images but I have to admit I was looking at some of them scenes with my colour only head on :) Still very enjoyable though Steve. Have you seen the James Bell vid of the large print - how big can you get, phew. Atb Al
Thanks Alan, the colours were lovely. Not seen James’ video yet but I also have one coming with a very large print 🙂
Great as usual. However, I'm curious about what kind of filter holder and filter brand you are using.
Thanks Ingmar. I mostly use the basic Cokin P holders but also like the genuine Bronica hood that takes the same filters.
You definately seem to get some good results out of the Holga, I haven't yet tried it in a landscape setting. Did you use the colour filters with the Holga as well? I noticed that you use the Cokin P system of colour filters, are they ok for film photography as I'm in search of some I think?
Give the Holga a go in the landscape Chris, you’ll love it. I have screwed (bodged) a 46-52 mm step up ring into the soft plastic lens lip so I can use the likes of a yellow filter. Cokin P coloured filters are very good.
Thank you Nelson, I am glad you liked the video. The three locations are all in the English Lake District, Ullswater, Brotherswater and Tom Heights overlooking Windermere. They are wonderful places to take photographs.
All the best.
Thanks for your video!!! did you meter with the camera or a light meter?? did you use spot metering? thanks!!
The spotmeter here, I always use it with the Bronica 👍
Always very special when the last shot of the day turns out to be exquisite. Curious...do you hand-hold the Holga or use the tripod?
Always handheld for the Holga Roy unless I’m in bulb mode (very rare).
Wonderful shots, thank you Steve.
Did you shot the XP2 with the box speed?
Thanks Georgios. I shot it at EI 200 to give me as much shadow detail as possible - no need to worry about the nightlights.
Hi Steve. I don’t know if the photo of the tree you shot 2.06 minutes into the video is for sale as an 8x8 or 10x10 print. I’d love to buy it if it is. It’s a stunning image with the contrast and would make a great Christmas present to myself.
I’ve not got any plans to print it yet Simon (or any others for the time being sadly) but if I do I’ll let you know.
Sorry Steve but I really don't like the Holga or the photos taken with it, but on the other hand using the polariser with b&w is great and most of us would only use it with colour. 👍
Holga’s are definitely Marmite, and I love Marmite 😊
@@SteveONions yea I'm also not a fan of marmite lol now cornered beef but it has to be British cornered beef not that over salted stuff from South America, cheese and brown sauce that's what I'd prefer between a couple of slices of bread. At least we can agree on a couple of things, 1, if I you love your own art and others can appreciate it your doing something right and 2 Nikon 😁. Keep up the good work. 👍
The frantic pacing didn't give me time to digest what you were saying.
Sorry about that James, if you run it at a slower playback speed it’ll all make sense 🙂
It’s been four days. Where’s the next video? You’ve created an addiction :)
Phew, it’s hard to keep up! 😀
How much coffee did you drink before editing this? 😅
Only a gallon or two 😜
Nice shots, but sorry to say it, I favor the Holga shots
So do I 😊
Wow! Was that a genuine Holga, or just a cheap plastic chinese knock-off? 😂 Excellent video as usual 👍🏻
Hey, if there’s a cheaper version I need to know about it - mines too sharp!
I ran into a guy in a park once where he exclaimed the light was lousy while I shot away. Well, if you are never coming back, or it may be a long time, shoot what you can is my motto. I would have shot more on your recent trip in the video, for sure. I think it is really only when one is very deliberate in looking for the best scene that one shoots less; the problem being one may pass up on the best scene for the day by waiting. However, in that case maybe nothing was really worth shooting that day.
It depends, I think your sensibilities change with experience, equipment, and desires, all of which evolve over time. I would shoot a space alien in any light, but not trees. Some politicians and news media people need and deserve much more shooting ;)
I tend to shoot less when using 120 film John, too much developing and scanning otherwise.
Very good Steve. But concerned for your welfare at the start with those roots!
It was a bit slippy James, going back up was a lot easier.
