This is a complete tear down and reassembly. I DID MY BEST TO MAKE IT AS SHORT AS POSSIBLE. Any support would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for watching.
EXCELLENT tutorial!! I have searched internet for simple breakdown demonstration as I have not done any complete tear downs of reels in about 35 years. I have 7 5500c's. differ in age and style and wear. Was considering sending them off to be r&rd, but decided to try again myself. Save some$$$$ .Thanks for the detailed commentary and the clear and descriptive photography. Great job. The only thing better would be you at the table with me in person. Will definitely be tuning in to other videos!
Bought a 5500 Abu at a flea market for 20.00 man said it would hardly turn . I bought it took it home tore it down gave it a good cleaning as it looks like someone had poured dirt into inner workings . When I got done it looked and casted like a brand new reel. It was made in 2003 got it two weeks ago it's a great reel .
Just watched your video on tear down clean oil and repair any thing that needs it. I have several reels that have sat up 15 years or more due to my health. I’m a 100% Disabled Vietnam Veteran who loved to fish. Now those days are over as I am now wheelchair bound and would like to get them all cleaned, oiled and repaired as needed so I can sell them. Do you do this as a job/hobby to earn some extra cash? Please let me know, I am in Central Louisiana.
I did work on reels as a hobby for several years but no longer do it. I would suggest finding a local service center to do the work. Most tackle shops should be able to recommend someone.
I forgot to mention there’s a guy on RUclips. His channel is called second chance tackle. You may be able to send everything to him for service. Check him out. He knows what he’s doing.
The main difference is the placement of the bearings. The older model has a fixed axle with the bearings in the end caps. The axle spins with the spool. The newer model has a free floating spool (axle does not spin) with the bearings placed in the spool. A much better design. Thanks for watching and the comment.
I do however you would have to cover shipping both ways. $15 for a total tear down. While your at it you should up grade the drag washers. Parts would be between 10 and 15. No cost for the labor. Thanks for watching.
@@abugarciareelrepairandmain8684 Very fair price, Mark. When I add in priority shipping (which I didn't think about) it is probably with more than the reel at this point. But, thank you very much.
I’ve done this process before but it’s been several years, though. I watched this video to make sure I put everything back correctly and I think I did. However, something is not right because the spool release plunger will not push in. I’m going to have to take it apart again.... I really dislike that c clip right under the handle.
Yea pay close attention to the position of the push/release mechanism. I have to look back but I believe I make reference specifically to that. Before you put the screws holding the plate on or the handle, make sure everything is working then proceed. I'm almost positive I describe that process. Good luck.
@@abugarciareelrepairandmain8684 well, now it pushes in but will not pop back up and stays in free spool. I’m pretty good at mechanical devices but this puzzles me. I’ve reassembled it just like the owner’s manual schematic, some thing is obviously not right.
@@abugarciareelrepairandmain8684 after just doing anything I could it somehow started working again just sometimes the anti reverse slips but I don’t really care too much about that

Great story. Thanks for sharing that.
Really enjoyed this video and subscribed, thank you for posting.
Thanks for the love!
I enjoy your tear down and rebuild videos. They are better made, better informed than quite a few others I had wasted time watching.
Hey I appreciate the comment. Thanks for watching.
Thank you for a great & informative video. 🙏🏻
Missed this one THANKS!

Should you use oil or grease on the shaft that the main gear and disk drags slide onto?
I put a thin layer of grease on the shaft. Thanks for watching
Can you tell me where I can get the carbon fiber drag washers ?
whats the difference between these older 5500c and 5000c? does the "c" matter? thx

Great video. Do you offer a service to tear down and clean a 5500C?

If you want we could set up a face time and I could try to help. You can email me at mah2856@gmail.com.
Where do you get your drag washers?
“Smooth Drag” or straight off eBay
Mine is doing this thing where when I reel the gears are together but they won’t spin and I tried everything and it won’t reel
Are you able to do face time? I can try to look at it with you and see what the problem is.
@@abugarciareelrepairandmain8684 after just doing anything I could it somehow started working again just sometimes the anti reverse slips but I don’t really care too much about that
I think there was just something out of place that’s somehow went into place
There is probably nothing wrong with the reel but it just needs a good cleaning. When things get dirty they start sticking. Good luck.
@@abugarciareelrepairandmain8684 it was kinda dirty but now it’s smoother then it was before and I’m gonna try and get on some catfish soon thanks
Is the 5500c a salt water Real
Sorry for the late reply but yes, I have use these reels in salt water for many years. Just take care of them.
