Incorrect. Treating each person acording to the level of respect they deserve is not retaliation.
      ----
The retaliation (or what one could call natural reaction) occurred at the point in time where the assessment of the level of respect deserved CHANGED.
So, retaliation (in that sense) occured long before the race at issue even started. During the race there was only a giving of benefits or withholding of benefits as previously determined would be appropriate, no retaliation during the race.

If I'm understanding him correctly, Mike was saying that while contact took place, it wasn't necessarily retaliation from Denny, but hard racing. He was saying if this was any other scenario without drivers having beef, it'd just be a hard racing deal.
Jr. saw it as retaliation pure and simple, just not overly blatant, but enough to send a message.
Me personally, I think either way, Denny got retaliation whether it was intended or not, simply because you have to wonder or even think about it, and the seed of doubt is there.
To Mike's point, unless Denny flat out admitted it, you can make the claim one way or the other.
To Jr's point, he didn't cut him any slack which was uncharacteristic of how he raced everyone else that day.

So, not retaliation, but was lack of courtesy. He had already said he would not provide courtesy (i.e.,. not cut him any breaks)
That statement by Hamlin put Chastain on notice to DRIVE HIM CLEAN - i.e., you are going to have take what you get, not be given be given something through courtesy

I said it when I watched this episode and I will say it again here. They're both right in this instance. I get where Mike is trying to come from, but when he says, "You're the driver. I'm not." He loses the argument by principle there. Thing about it is this: As a driver(couch driver, nowhere near talented enough...) the thing I'm thinking about is as Mike brought up is how many to go and where I'm at and who I am racing against. But at the exact same time, if I know one of those drivers is someone I owe, I'm doing exactly what Dale explained Denny did(and ultimately what we all watched happen.) I'm running my line and force them to make their decision. The flip side of that coin is that if Ross doesn't lift and just buries it into Hamlin's door, it ends both of their days.
Also, had I been the one in Ross's position, I know Denny ain't gonna cut me a break, so bury it off in their and see if she sticks! HAHAHAHA Raise Hell! Praise Dale!

I love Mike playing devils advocate here. But I truly don’t believe he really thinks what he’s saying. He’s definitely trying to appease the anti-Hendrick and Chase Elliott fan base here by siding with Hamlin. 😂
