I honestly think that there should be some form of legislation where the price of a final clothing item cannot be less than the sum of some kind of equation like (minimum wage in the country of production+x per mile shipped+x surcharge over a certain amount of items produced, etc), that would AT LEAST make sure that the items of bottom line quality are priced accordingly and not artificially lowered. It would also incentivize local production because it can offset insane travel the item makes. But I’m no legislator
umm hello love this??? idk how feasible it is and I'm sure brands could find loopholes (like only counting the lowest country of production even if it was produced in many places, like 'made in italy' items that have their final additions done in Italy but are largely produced elsewhere) but if all that could be fixed then this really could help the industry!

Nice to see u back! I love dressing up, but I‘ve been doing closet costumes for years now. I basically combine my clothes and accessories according to my vision and then spice it up with makeup and hair. I also have an old suitcase with dressup materials I collected over the years which get repurposed every now and then. However, I‘m goth and a lot of my clothing has dressup character anyways so for someone who‘s style is more preppy/basic/stylish closet costumes might be tricky. My daughter found a sweater at the thrift store she was going to purchase. She saw the tag was Shein and was going to put it back. I pointed out that the item was already made and shipped. If she wore it only a short time that was better than leaving it to be put in the landfill.
I think that's a good way to handle the Halloween costume situation. You have them now, so how can you use them going forward? A friend could also borrow them for a future costume!

@@katierobinson Yes I am and I am new to problems with fast fashion content, so I don’t really know how sustainable I’ll be in the future but hopefully I’ll find it in me to make some changes.
Honestly, a lot of the natural fabrics that DO have a lot of animal cruelty. I rather wear my acrylic sweaters for years (which I do and a lot of them still look great), than contributing to animal cruelty for a wool sweater that shrinks after a while (which also happened to me)
To the person asking about dupes: I haven’t seen any dupes that are better quality than the original. They may look nice on the outside but the tell is always the quality of the lining and interfacing. I encourage saving up for the bag you want or tempering your desires to be in line with your budget. About SHEIN and low quality clothes: I wonder what the actual experience of wearing these clothes is? Wearing ill fitting, low quality polyester and acrylic can’t be comfortable. It’s like people are trading off savings or going with a trend for their own comfort and health.
I have frustratingly contacted depop sellers who post an item as "vintage" and "brand unknown but high quality!" but once the item arrived Shein was CLEARLY listed on the tag. Not okay.
This is not hateful , at all, but I never realised how Halloween is so considered to equal consumerism. I can’t remember the last time I bought something for Halloween. Tbf I am a creative person, but I can always rummage something up from my wardrobe. I’ve been Mia Wallace,Amy whinehouse, a witch and a 1920s woman to name a few. I LOVE dressing up and idk I just didn’t know that it was such a problem.
your wardrobe sounds amazing!! honestly i find it really hard to imagine the clothes i own for halloween costumes, i have zero upcycling skills& quite a basic wardrobe so idk how i would do a costume that’s not a reference to an obscure regular character 😅 i do try not buy anything for halloween when we do dress up and instead make something work with what i own or can borrow but i also find it really exciting to create a fun costume so it’s balancing that in a sustainable way that i struggled with this time!
It's only equal to consumerism because in post-capitalism everything is a vehicle for consumerism. Halloween's origins predate all the plastic decorations and costumes and candies we see nowadays. Same is true for almost every holiday. It is very possible to celebrate responsibly and still have lots of fun. Heck, you can even go the historical route and look up earlier traditions for inspiration!
Exactly, me neither! If I have to wear costume I look at it as a fun game to find something in my wardrobe, and create something new. (Similar feeling to second-hand shopping) If I have to buy something for it, I buy something that I can wear like an everyday clothes. oh, and lots of ideas can come from a vintage shop!
I have been wearing the same costume for Halloween since I was 15. I live in Germany where we also dress up for carnival and I wear it there too so 2 x a year! :)😂
Dude! I’ve recently gotten back into purchasing off depop after like 2 years of not using it. I noticed some pieces that looked like they could be shein items and they just don’t include the brand??? I wouldn’t mind someone reselling shein items, however that’s a big indicator of the quality of the item
I don't really participate in Halloween since it's not a major thing where I live, but when I do get the chance (such as this year) I try to wear what I have in my closet or thrift whatever I need for the costume. This year's costume is Rambley from the video game Indigo Park, but since he's a raccoon, I did my best to translate his design to human clothes the best as I could (with an additional raccoon hat I owned as a teen). It took me a bit, but I was able to thrift the last detail that I needed (a red neckerchief) in a design that I knew I'd repurpose in my closet for a long time.
Just found out that some of the plant-based alternatives to leather contain up to 40% plastic... There's so much greenwashing going on, it's difficult for me as someone who *has* worked in the industry for years to distinguish fact from fiction - let alone the everyday consumer.... 😩
In the future you could donate the tiara and gloves to a local theatre club, or to a kindergarten / primary school so they can dress up as princesses etc. Or to a 2nd hand wedding dress company?
Not gonna lie, my halloween costume is a reused bag of paper with a creepy smile drawn on it (look up Emio the smilling man if you're curious, it's a serial killer/urban legend from a visual novel). There are so many ways to have fun without being wasteful, I wish people tried to be more creative. Most of my halloween home deco are handmade as well or belonged to my mom. The only thing halloween related I bought this year was a couple more spiders to put in my spiderweb and ghost lights for a spot in my appartment that already needed more light. I'm planning on covering the little ghosts with tiny handmade paper lanterns once halloween is over.
literally was thinking this but because im not an expert I didn't want to comment but like, isn't space full of space junk and obviously the emissions created by launches must be enormous?
what i hate with the whole "fast fashion is affordable" argument is that people are basically admitting that they would do anything but bring back the post-war consensus, i.e. low economic inequality
Vegan knit wear irks me, if you shop from a sustainable brand then sheep don’t experience cruelty. The issue is that domestic sheep have been genetically bread for wool, meat and milk and only wild sheep have the ability to self shear, if you don’t shear a domestic sheep it will over heat outside of winter and could die or the wool continues growing and it gets heavier. I live near a wool farm, the only “cruelty” is a few nicks from the shearer, replacing sheep wool with crap puts someone’s livelihood at risk and it doesn’t last it will feel awful after one wash. I know that if my jumper is ever damaged beyond repair I could compost it.
I do feel some shame about selling Shein items on my depop. In most cases I bought them secondhand but sometimes I get them gifted to me. I've never bought from them directly ever but I no longer want these items and I would rather sell them/donate them than keep or toss (I only toss clothes if they're like DONE done, beyond saving lmao.) Also, I sometimes look at Good On You in a sceptical way. I don't think they update their ratings often and they often will give a more negative rating to brands who simply use leather. Personallyyyy I'm gonna buy leather over faux leather and I think that that's more sustainable for the long term.
Well this year I fell in love with a pretty green velvet pointy hat in Morrisons so I bought it but I will reuse my long black velvet dress that I made 2 years ago when I dressed as Morticia Addams. I have children and my eldest demands that I dress up for birthdays and Halloween so I try to repurpose old clothes or go to charity shops as much as possible.
I honestly haven't dressed up for Halloween in years. I don't really celebrate it anyway (other than eating a fair share of candy 😂) so I don't see the reason to. You could always repurpose the gloves with a gown if you need to attend a formal event in the future. :)
"hoping they'll buy a luxury handbag"..... Ok, but tbh if I want a fancy bag I'm gonna talk to an independent leather worker and get it custom made. And honestly it would last way longer.
I am vegan and for me, vegan means no animal cruelty and exploitation. So acrylic is vegan, maybe not the best for the planet, but for me it is better than harming animals.
@sophiee-xh7yf I understad your pov but there is a lot of sustainable wool. Sheep will litteraly die if we don't shave them, so isn't that a better option? Not to say you can't have acryllic sweaters - the thrift stores are full of them so you could always buy them sustainably second hand if you wanted to
I will not have a costume this year for Halloween. I will not celebrate it as I didn’t for the past years even thought I kinda wanted to this year. 😅 But I work all day + I have a work dinner/event this day. I’m French and a lot of us don’t celebrate it. I’m not that mad about it as I didn’t have any costume in mind but I would rather not go to this dinner. 😂
"Vegan clothes" are very hard to actually make. No exploitation or harming of animals at all, and I'm including insects, is nigh impossible in this day and age. Most people aren't gathering shed wool from wild sheep, while cotton and other plant fibres are often grown with pesticide. Shein = littering is absolutely true of most of the demographic buying shein. The affordability aspect is not most of the buyers, and I think we have to acknowledge that a lot of people are doing their best with what they have). I compare it to some of the yarn videos I see, people doing yarn hauls with fifty balls of acrylic that they're not going to use and just becomes a stash, but you know that particular creator can and does regularly buy more ethical fibres because they're very well off. Meanwhile I feel guilty buying a single ball of acrylic in a colour I need and will use in its entirety (video idea for you, is it better or worse for the environment to make jumpers from acrylic yarn or buy poly/acrylic premade?)
Why does EVERYTHING have to have a theme??????? I'm so tired of all of it. The popcorn bucket is just ridiculous. On another Vlog where she was going off on Halloween overconsumption, I got a great idea about holiday decor that I'm totally going to adopt. This person has one shelf in their home they dedicate to a particular holiday and that's it. She just changes it as the season changes. I gasped at the "not dating a woman that wears Shein", mostly because it's such a great stand.

lol love this!
Halloween idea for the gloves and tiara could a miss universe contestant! You could wear an evening gown and be miss Great Britain 🤣
It took me a bit, but I was able to thrift the last detail that I needed (a red neckerchief) in a design that I knew I'd repurpose in my closet for a long time.
love this, sounds like a really unique and creative costume!
Just found out that some of the plant-based alternatives to leather contain up to 40% plastic...
There's so much greenwashing going on, it's difficult for me as someone who *has* worked in the industry for years to distinguish fact from fiction - let alone the everyday consumer.... 😩
Also, there are companies where you can rent costumes and props for film / theatre productions - could work for Halloween too?
obviously depends on the fabric but yeah, they really should be making this more obvious to consumers 😭
ooh wish I thought of this and planned time!! for my next halloween outfit needs I'll keep this in mind 🫶
Associating space with sustainability is very funny to me because the space industry is one of the least sustainable industries that exists.
literally was thinking this but because im not an expert I didn't want to comment but like, isn't space full of space junk and obviously the emissions created by launches must be enormous?
UGGs are now mixed with synthetic, so there are “dupes” that are better quality. Costco was selling 100% wool ugg style shoes.
what i hate with the whole "fast fashion is affordable" argument is that people are basically admitting that they would do anything but bring back the post-war consensus, i.e. low economic inequality
That couch is gorgeous does it fold out to a bed?
ty!! yes it does haha, haven't slept on it myself so unsure whether it's super comfy or not
Random question, how are you liking this ikea couch? I’m hunting for a new one
it's actually a MADE couch which we bought before the company closed! does Ikea do a similar one?
@ oh yeah, they have a jatterbo or whatever it’s called that also has this low back green stripy corduroy type deal
U look very pretty on this video btw!
I do feel some shame about selling Shein items on my depop. In most cases I bought them secondhand but sometimes I get them gifted to me. I've never bought from them directly ever but I no longer want these items and I would rather sell them/donate them than keep or toss (I only toss clothes if they're like DONE done, beyond saving lmao.)
Also, I sometimes look at Good On You in a sceptical way.
I have children and my eldest demands that I dress up for birthdays and Halloween so I try to repurpose old clothes or go to charity shops as much as possible.
love this!! i’m sure you’ll reach for it again and again if you fell in love ❤
I honestly haven't dressed up for Halloween in years. I don't really celebrate it anyway (other than eating a fair share of candy 😂) so I don't see the reason to.
You could always repurpose the gloves with a gown if you need to attend a formal event in the future. :)
I was thinking this actually!! but I don't see myself attending anything this fancy 💀
“Vegan” knitwear also implies that regular knitwear isn’t vegan. But cotton makes great knitwear and is also vegan, and biodegradable.
so true 🥲
"hoping they'll buy a luxury handbag".....
Ok, but tbh if I want a fancy bag I'm gonna talk to an independent leather worker and get it custom made.
And honestly it would last way longer.
TT always got me to shop, till I deleted the app.
love that you took action to delete it when you noticed the pattern!! that’s all we can do❤
@@katierobinson Thank you. 🤗 I really deleted it for another reason but this is a good side effect that it doesn’t make me shop anymore. 😊😊
The vegan knitwear thing makes me so mad. Why do these brands think this is ok??
But I work all day + I have a work dinner/event this day. I’m French and a lot of us don’t celebrate it. I’m not that mad about it as I didn’t have any costume in mind but I would rather not go to this dinner. 😂
oh i didn’t realise it wasn’t that big in france!! sad you’re not getting to dress up on the one year you feel like it 😢💀
"Vegan clothes" are very hard to actually make.
Twitter is awful. It isn’t just you. I deleted Twitter (or X or whatever people call it now) about… 3? Years ago, and I haven’t missed looking at that app AT ALL. I feel the same way with tik tok. I deleted it as well. I prefer Instagram and youtube for entertainment. I’m a 24 yr old grandma, sue me.
literally thinking about switching over to threads asap and just starting over, it's such a toxic platform 😭 tiktok is a little better for me but I also don't think I'd miss it too much
Girl get on threads! It’s my favorite platform on the internet right now.
I was initially on it when it launched but dropped off bc it wasn't as busy, may have to give it another go!!
Early and first comment. 😊
