breaking down Shein's disastrous UK parliament hearing
Shein tries to answer a basic question with a straight answer challenge: impossible mode 🥴
UK MPs summoned Shein and Temu to answer questions on their supply chains and forced labour allegations, and it turned into the most chaotic parliamentary hearing I've ever seen 😭 we NEED to watch this together & break it down bc I genuinely think this may be a bit of a disaster for Shein's pr image

6:00 help thats my MP!! shes the youngest MP in parliament rn and shes serving! rosie wrighting fyi, thought i recognised her while watching this!
You did great. Thanks for reporting on it
I suspect her 'inability' to comment on potential forced labour in Xinjiang is because of the political implications it would carry for them within China to admit that takes place.
Came here to say this. China operates in a very different to most Western countries.
Wow way to go uk parliament! I thought all hope was lost
Thank you for covering this!
I'm happy to see the effort our politicians made to grill them on this. I hope we can take it one step further and ban them from selling clothes to the UK. No idea about the legality of an embargo like that, but in my opinion it should be illegal to sell clothes without being able to state the factory it was made in, and the region the fabric was sourced.
A long-term fed myself who has worked on the floor for hearings, nothing unusual about this. Written followup from the companies will be the thing to watch for. PM & pertinent cabinet ministers are in a swagger to keep their fragile jobs so their stance will be based on building & holding voter confidence: affordable goods for citizens during hard economic times (left wing) or supporting home-grown business even if retail cost is higher and infrastructures are being protected (right wing) by blocking these 2 companies with labour law technicalities (left/centre/other). Economics = poli sci: good idea to allow these companies to be traded publicly with US Prez inauguration on Jan 20? Many interlocking layers, especially global relations with China. Great chapter, KR! Happy 25♥ YOU ROCK!!!!
I barely know anything about the stock market, so take this with a pinch of salt: Not saying anything does say a lot, that they are on purpose as intransparent as they can. I don't think this will work out for them in the long run (speaking of several decades). Considering all the bad press, the questionable life cycle (from the very beginning of the production to the items being disposed to illegally landfills), no serious investor should/would invest, unless it is used for quick cash. Considering that more and more people try to shop more mindfully, it doesn't seem to me to be a wise strategy to go with. I'm more afraid that Shein being on the stock market will hurt the economy (probably even world wide) more then it seems. On the other hand, facebook also made it to the stock market and they own instagram and Whatsapp... But thank you for covering it ♡
I guess she can't be held in contempt because it's not a court of law? Couldn't be me, though, embarrassing myself in front of that many lawmakers at once.
i have no understanding of whether she can be or not but it certainly doesn’t look good 💀 kind of in awe of how she just kept going i think i would’ve run away 😭
like go girl give us nothing!
💀 LITERALLY why did she bother showing up????
full video for this available on my channel!!
One hour gang! 🎉

That summary wrapped everything up in a pretty bow!🔥🔥🔥What a joke. Considering they want to list in the UK, they've done themselves no favours. However, money talks...🫠🫠🫠
literally, the summary alone should be all the reason we need to stop them listing but I'm not hopeful this won't just be ignored 👀
@ if they put the right money on the table and make promises, I think the U.K. will fold unfortunately.☹️ Economically we are not in a good position at all. Money may win over morals. However, I’m an optimist so hopefully not!
Take a shot every time the woman does not answer a simple yes/no question ☠
GIRL LET'S GOOOOOO it's here!!! thank you!!
I RUSHED to post this 😮💨
I promise you the general counsel woman is getting paid sh!t-loads to play stupid and help Shein avoid responsibility. No sympathy for her from me whatsoever.
I bet ur right but something about the fact the CEO is not the one in that chair still doesn't sit right with me 😭
Agree. They might pay pennies to their manufacturers, but the ones in higher positions? That's where all the profits go.
She is without a doubt and I agree with your sentiments!
Everyone in that room must have nerves of steel, I would’ve been giggling from awkwardness 😭
genuinely think I would've been asked to leave cause I couldn't control my reactions to some of the MPs💀
Yessss thank you for putting this video out! I'm excited to watch!
excited to hear people's thoughts!!! genuinely got serotonin watching shein be reprimanded this hard lol
As long as this hammering leads to desired outcomes, and wasn’t just sand in our eyes. I worry they will ultimately still be listed regardless.
Sadly I feel this too, in today's world such things are done to make people think: yes the govt is standing for our interest, but in the end nothing actually changes. And people will not stop buying from these companies. The future is truly bleak honestly.
I had the same worry actually, esp when the chair said at the end it had been a "productive session" - although he did call Shein out after I hope they don't consider this job done and let them list with no more pushback 😳
The woman just didn’t “comment” on ANYTHING at all. Her being so un- prepared is such a bad look! But good; they shouldn’t be listed and should be discouraged to expand their businesses
I've never seen someone spend so much time saying less lmao 💀
I wonder if it’s that she’s incredibly unprepared or if she “can’t” say anything because SHEIN had a very long list of what she shouldn’t reveal. I have to imagine it’s the latter, although she was definitely floundering in her non-answers.
@ that’s probably it. Either ways; very poor strategy on SHEINs end. That being said, money triumphs all in today’s world. Now thinking about it- perhaps SHEIN is already confident that it’ll get the green flag to get listed on stock exchange; hence denying everything to not publicly admitting anything at all 🤷♀️
being "unprepared" is a very frequent trick to make the hearing stall. You don't want to say something that will get you in trouble, and you KNOW you f'd up and saying otherwise would be a straight lie, so you just don't say anything useful at all, forcing the other side to waste more time figuring out a way to get any evidence against you.
@@cjr790 literally think this is it, she's been told to just skirt the questions and wait till they can make up some corporate jargon in an email that can't be picked apart in person 😭
I will support whatever way they want to promote using what we already have, whether its underconsumption-core, project pan, or deinfluencing videos. People have got to stop mocking it and those who post their de-consumption journey. I don't care what people call it, sustainability trends are always a good thing because it reaches the widest, most interactive audience. If you don't like it, just click "not interested" on any those videos, and you'll stop seeing them. I know composting has been somewhat of a trend, but I can't wait to see more recycling trends. Not in a "use what you already have" way, but in a "actively ensure all your items are going somewhere they can actually be recycled" instead of just into the trash or to thrift stores that throw them in the trash. BTW, people are also calling all of this "recession-core" because many are doing it because they have no choice, and are trying to romanticize it.
I haven’t watched the whole video yet so not sure if you pick up on this, but I’ve been caught out with beauty/skincare being “vegan” but then not cruelty free? I don’t understand how you can market something as vegan (which I know relates to the ingredients) and not be cruelty free really
I dont have a white T-shirt. I used to wear something like this 10 years ago, but not now for more than 5 years. I dont think it suits me and my style. I dont wear any different tshirts at all 😊
YES!!! Thank you for this real journalism. 😊
huge aspect of personal style (to me) has been adapting my style to what my days actually look like, dressing more practical, so really dressing for my every day occasions. There's no use in owning a lot of going out stuff when all u do is go to the library. My style became even more personal when I took that in consideration (and my life became easier and more comfortable too)
Im doing a no buy year as buying mindlessly is silly when in reality you find many unborn garments hanging in a wardrobe and just counted my shampoos which came to a grand total of 24 I mean who needs to buy this amount of clutter .. me its seems. So I'm going to get pleasure in using what I have this year and no longer shopping to fill a desire when often I'm bored anyway by purchases. Im envisaging travel instead of things to keep me motivated.
It's sad how this idea devolved over time. I learned about capsule wardrobes over a decade ago from Project 333 and the idea was to pull from things you already own and commit to wearing 33 items for 3 months. The way it's shifted into "buy these wardrobe essentials" is unfortunate. Granted, the challenge was born in the time where fashion bloggers were shifting into influencers and affiliate links, and there was now a financial incentive for encouraging the readers to buy things, so I completely understand why it did. Being able to trace what started as sharing personal style to what fashion and influencer culture has become hurts my heart.
I never had any trust in "influencers" to begin with.
If rent the runway offered petite size clothing I would subscribe- The reg misses sizing does not fit me without alterations 90% of the time
Katie, I liked the way you talked through your ideas in this video. You asked a lot of rhetorical questions, which I would love to see you work through in future videos. One of the questions you asked was "what makes certain materials better than others?" You didn't say that verbatim, but something to that effect. From what I understand, better is a subjective way to quantify materials. Polyester isn't "worse" than cotton; it depends on what you are using the fabric for. I think the easier-to-answer question is what makes a material higher quality. This breaks down into all of the processes that go into creating yarns, which then moves into dyeing, which then moves into production and working conditions. You're doing great, and I just stubbed! Excited for more.
wow this is a fangirl moment for me, love your videos and always learn so much from watching them! thanks for subbing!! 🫶😭
“What’s missing in today’s culture is our ability to tap into what we like rather than being told what we like.” 1000% you hit the nail on the head.
🥹
💯
They're so out of touch with reality and the funny thing is that they try so hard to be relatable only to sell you a product.
I think something about the same aesthetic you talked about is that so many of these influencers are white and blonde. It’s frustrating to me that we uplift influencers and their possibly problematic brands
That Bella Hadid outfit looks sooo 2003! I had a classmate who dressed just like that, with the bootcut jeans and kitten heels, brings back the memories!
Interesting. I'm an elder millennial who does not use TikTok and I've been trying to wrap my mind around not only this trend, but the discourse surrounding it. I would say as a consumer I'm probably somewhere in the middle, tend to save more than I buy, but I'm far from ideal, so I have some things to learn from people trying to consume less. As a person of ADHD I've definitely benefited from having less stuff. But as I've learned more about minimalism and under consumption, I've noticed a trend in myself, which is that I've become more focused on material goods than ever before. Whether to buy this or that thing has become this weird sort of moral test that is stressing me out. I like nice things that last for years, I don't like clutter, I think those things will always be true. I don't know if that's good enough. I don't know what good enough is. So I'm just striving for better than I was before. And for the record, when I was poor, I had a major problem with overconsumption, destroyed my credit for a while in my early twenties. I learned the hard way. So I want to be careful about assuming that there is only one way poor people operate and it's always this paradigm of virtuous frugality. I could have benefited a lot from underconsumption core back then!
You make alot of sense!!!!!❤
As someone who has a more edgy androgynous aesthetic who has to work in an office most of the time I agree 100% that "basics" aren't the same for everyone, I will never use a white tee shirt or a pair of light wash jeans.
I genuinely did not know TALA was an influencer brand, I’ve no idea who that girls even is. I came across the brand quite randomly, I really like their leggings and bought from them multiple times. I do genuinely like their pieces including the coats, of which I have two, the puffer and the overcoat. To me it’s a faceless brand and I will continue to treat it as such.
oh interesting 👀
For me a good start towards the development of my personal style was thinking about what I liked as a kid. For me it was the right way to understand what I'm really drawn to. I think it's quite relatable that you don't want to wear the same as you were when you were 4, however back then you weren't influenced that much by what you see on others and it can make up a comfort zone. So for me I realized how much I loved pink and nowadays I really feel at home and like myself when I wear this color. From that point on I am slowly developing confidence in what I like:)
Jusing wool is not bed for the animale. En is beter for the planet
6:03 i actually saw a video about the Aran Jumper (knit sweater) the other day, and looked up how much an authentic one (made from 100% wool) would cost. The price I found for a quality Aran jumper was $172 CAD, the one I bought from Aritzia over a year ago was $128 CAD, not a huge difference imo. Back then I didn’t know about fabric or clothing sustainability but if I were already spending over $100 on a sweater, I really wish I had put the extra money towards a handmade authentic piece.
totally resonate with this!! is the Aritzia one holding up well to wear and tear?
