I started a journal about 4 years ago, with the intent to write at least 1 positive thing that happened per day. Not exactly gratitude, but similar. When I separated from an abusive (now ex) spouse, I continued the habit. I REALLY wanted to focus on the positive then. I realized, at the end of a very trying year, that I had a book full of beautiful moments. Strangers who said nice things, friends and family who held my hand through the darkest nights I faced. I hope I will always keep this habit, the record the good, the beautiful, no matter how mundane. Also, hi from Utah!
Our beloved dog died suddenly, after 12.5 years. Even though we rushed him to the animal hospital, I kept sobbing, thinking of all the things we might have done differently. Through my tears, instead of lamenting, I decided to say “Thank you God for giving me that wonderful dog for 12.5 years. I really loved his _____ (soft ears, funny personality, companionship, etc...) I immediately started to feel better. I still choke up sometimes,, but now I can laugh and share fond memories about him with my family. ❤
Same here. My beloved Dog spent 13 years with me, she was my only family. She died from cancer, I tried everything to heal her, in vain. After death, I was beyond depressed, even tried to end it all; at this time I had a very nice and wise doctoress, she told me this: dont ever think about the bad memories, only focus on the good memories you have of her( so many beautiful moments)! It worked.

Hospitality industry research suggested that we have an 8:1 negativity bias. If you get good service, you'll tell 5 other people. If you get bad service, you'll tell upto 40 people!
As my great-grandfather used to say, "You see what you look for." There is so much more I could say, but instead, I will just say Thank You for this important video.
This idea is the basis of the Wolf Inside Us story.......The legend is a story of a grandfather or elder using a metaphor of two wolves fighting within him to explain inner conflicts to his grandson, or other young person. I had a hard time asking what I could be grateful for each day, because I felt like everything I had was from my hard work and not other's. So I changed it up and started keeping a "What went right today?" Journal. That has helped so much, by just changing the phrase just a little it's helped me to see more positive in my life.
Yeah! biased media affects all of us. In my country, Bangladesh, the media is so badly managed that even taking a look into the latest news makes me anxious of the prejudices they spread
Mainstream media propaganda AKA brainwashing. The best solution is to not watch, listen, or pay any attention to it at all. And use social media platforms very minimally and wisely 👍
@@_aididthat’s not confined to Bangladesh, either. Western countries are filled with creating fear - and lying. Need to question everything and look into many diff sources.
I stopped watching and listening to the news 8,5 yrs ago. Life becomes so much nicer when you do that! I also block/delete ppl that are full of drama & negativity. You can choose to do this.
I got rid of TV 14 years ago… don’t watch it, no Disney, No Netflix, No radio either…. My life has moved to way better levels since then. “Your brain is not designed to keep you happy, it’s designed to keep you alive”.
@@CarodeDakaryou are just being ignorant, very likely to make yourself feel good about your lifestyle… You do understand the difference between watching what you choose as opposed to watching what’s crammed down your throat. Further, your not going to find esoteric teaching on the tv…
It’s been well over 20 years since I disconnected from HOLLYWIERD. YT is my only connection to media and YT has gotten so bad that I’m just about done with it to…
Even as a kid I used to say there should always be another news channel that only allows positive things that anyone can be in, within reason, such as so and so is now cancer-free, or so-and-so found their lost dog, etc. Like a positivity Patrol. Each county can have their own channel or whatever. Just something to watch to see all the good and remind yourself it's there and give you a boost when you're having a bad day. Anxiety be gone it's all your frame of reference. I refuse now to make a hell out of my heaven!!
When I finally read the Bible for myself, it amazed me with how much philosophy and psychology was present. I still live by many of the principles while not being a Christian. I wish more people took the time to see how much “content” the Bible has. Respect to you!
I was raised Catholic, but didn't read the Bible in full until college. I saw all the contradictions in it and left religion behind. It's made me a kinder and more logical person. It was discombobulating at first, but now I live by 'do unto others as I would have done onto myself' (which predates the Bible, of course). I've tried to get my very large Catholic family to see how eating animals causes so much suffering, but none of them has been able to stop because they use the excuse that the Bible tells them they have "dominion" over others--even though that is not the original interpretation and its meaning is more like "stewardship." I know of others who were able to go vegan once they left religion behind. So interesting how people choose what to get from that book.
I wish I were a lot less selfish, honestly. And I'm not sure why you feel so cavalier about being rude and judgmental toward a total stranger you've never met. I wasn't trying to give myself a compliment. I was just intrigued that what I got out of the gospel aligns so closely to what this lady is saying.
implemented your suggestions and it works. Moved gratitude to expressing it more to others and not only has my life improved but it has had a very positive effect on those around me. I am 65. You taught this old dog a very nice and very useful lesson. Thank you!
Thank you Emma! I am a therapist. I love you ability to make psychotherapy concepts available to all. Your ability to distill science into understandable and ACTIONABLE steps. Your videos are commonly assigned as homework😉 Thank you again.
A lot of comments here about choice of thought, but the reality is that our brain gets a bigger hit off of fight or flight adrenaline than it does off of feel good stuff. This can become an addiction for us and we seek to feed it through the negative and what frightens us. It’s completely biological.
Don’t know how this showed up in my feed, but couldn’t be more timely! What an awesome synopsis of the hole we dug ourselves into with social media! Glad to have found your channel!
In life people are always told to be better or do better than yesterday or today. Even though you're doing the best you can do, a person always feels like they are not good enough.
This podcast is hysterical… so true!! I tell friends not to buy into the sensationalized news but they still insist on watching it. That they “have to know what’s happening in the world” I don’t watch!!
before watching , after struggling 4-5 year with anxiety, you were the only one whose techniques worked out for me. Accepting and Being volunteer for low emotions. I think accepting is most realistic approach to our emotions. We are people with low and high emotions. Thanks for your support...
Suppressing feelings doesn't work (something somewhere always gets broken). True healing seems to come when we integrate our feelings and understand the relationship between logic and feeling. Our feelings are fuelled by our perspective. So when we change the perspective the feelings dissipate or grow on their own. We can acknowledge the initial impulse and then pause long enough to consider what we are going to do to address the emotional reality/need.
Thank you for your channel. Many people can't afford therapy. It's so helpful..... But sometimes i wish I could be someone else with a different struggle.
I love you commentary in this video. It really is a shame that we are exposed to so many triggers for anxiety and depression. I realised that I instinctively avoid watching the news and even aggressive music, and I try to focus my attention a lot more on my body sensations and feelings as a way of ignoring this negativity bias, and I didn't even know it is a thing that our brain does by instinct!
I was for 50 years, positive. Doing MY Best to train and reverse, and forgive, and sometimes ignore. But I had enough.. I almost injoy being in the bad mood literally.
It was probably wired in childhood trauma? So feels foreign or uncomfortable to change. Can become addicted to cortisol in a way but still can change with persistence! Or different technique
This reminds of something I recently heard about our noses actually obstructing part of our view, but we automatically adjust our vision to ignore the nose. Been noticing my nose a lot more since.
Aftrr completed 16 videos out of 30 i experence that i am the happiest person on the earth and before i was the most anxious person on the earht.. Thank u❤ Emma
This is so good! I wish this was headlines in our mass news and publications. We need to draw awareness on our negativity bias. Thank you so much for this. I feel better about my thoughts.
Great advice! I tend to “over analyze” and point out “the other side of the story” to challenge current statements. I shall TRY to limit my comments to those that bring out the “brighter side” of life. 😀🌞❤️ Thank you!
Just turning off the news, TV and social media does wonders for calming your mind and redirecting your thoughts inward where you can control the positive or negative thermostat. Think of the former like dessert, a nice treat occasionaly, but a daily diet of it where it overtakes the protein and veggies and you become ill, while it slowly kills you. Find your happiness everyday and invite it to sit a spell, then just listen.
I find that the news promotes fear and helplessness. Also, there is NO good reason to show graphic images. They serve no purpose but they fuel fear, anger and anxiety. You are spot on about issues like the climate crisis- if the media put energy and time into educating and empowering, it would leave us feeling more hopeful and energized to create change. We really have to be more discerning about what we choose tobwatch and listen to. . This video has reminded me to create a gratitude journal again. Here's a start- I'm grateful for your work! Thank you. 🙂
This is easier said than done when you have autism, ADHD, anxiety, and clinical depression. When one of those mental health issues is taking control, the other mental health issues get upset. It's hard to have all work together, especially not knowing I had these issues for 57 years.
Me too! And now after being ousted from my 2nd relationship in my life, it’s time to care for me. I’m an artist, I’m capable, lovable and open to everything change in my life. I’m 59 and am finally finding my way on my own without heart wrenching fear or self disgust. I never knew I had a childhood disorder-dysautonomia. I have been misdiagnosed often. Too many psychotropic drugs and not enough self love practice. As a child of immigrants, my young life was not a child’s fun life. I was carrying the pain and embarrassment of my parents. I was given adult duties as a child. My parents were amazingly resilient people which made them extremely successful. Now that i have cared for each of them until they passed, my dad last February- i finally feel I am coming into my own life. Finally. Though i lived in Bali 12 years and it was amazing-I still could not relax into my life even there. Learning that goodness abounds and most people are lovely spirits. I’m working on self-love, self-trust, and giving it all up to God. I’m grateful i can breathe to stay alive and be in love with me, my life and the process. Thank You for your help. RUclips is my main go to for spiritual connection when I can’t access people one on one. ❤
I have the first two always, the third sometimes but the fourth never. However I've also had no meds EVER and I am middle-aged. I won't give my power away just because it's hidden or masked behind something else... some people just have no literal idea how strong inside they really are.

You gave the perfect description of what I'm going through and I'm trying to rewire my brain from this bias thank you so much your vids are so encouraging!
Ive been watching your videos on anxiety lately. I had a really horrible anxiety crisis about a week ago, and its been really tough. Mainly because my anxiety lead me to a really bad mental space for 2+ years. It got better last year, it was rather abrupt how it all started to get better. I still cant say what was that got me out of that mental space. Fast foward to last week something happened and i started having panic attacks, had to go to the hospital a few times. I decided that i wanted to do things better this time, thought im gonna research on this to see how i can stop it, and i found your channel, and it has given me something i didnt have before. The certanty that its all going to be okay and im not alone in this journey. Just wanted to say that im grateful for that ❤
A few months ago I was training for a new position and I got really negative, which made me focus more on the negative aspects and it made learning the new role overwhelming and difficult. Once I decided to stop being so negative, learning the role got way easier; really I just didn't want to get out of my comfort zone with my old position. Now I actually like the new position way better than the old one.
I’ve avoided watching these videos, but I kept seeing you in my feed, so today I clicked. Negativity bias gives a name to how I’ve operated my whole life, having carefully tiptoed around a volatile alcoholic growing up. Avoiding risk was my whole focus, and happy moments were minimized to anomalies to lessen the let down when things returned to not happy. I can see it, and it’s still here playing out. There is fear around letting it go too. Part of me believes happy is only on TV. Heavy stuff to be working through, but dammit this kind of thinking is going away if it’s the last thing I do. Thank you 💚
Emma, You are an angel 😇! Your lessons are life changing and are a catalyst to healing and better habits! I can only imagine the number of people you have helped! Gratitude is an understatement! Thank you.
This is the video I was looking for. Thank you. You have also provided a helpful heuristics (for me, at least) by introducing the idea: hey mind thanks for the negativity bias (and your want to keep me alive) but I want to be happy too!
It compelled me to comment because I came from Instagram site and I was angry for no reason and hop in here and just what I needed it! Thank you so much, I feel better
Beautiful! and perfect explanation. Love the simplicity of it and you are a great communicator🙏 “there is beauty everywhere, but not all eyes can see it” Rumi. You are using a different language, but it is amazing how we can explore it also from the perspective of becoming more aware, of being more conscious of our thinking patterns😅 “when you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change” thank you for your effort ♥️🌺☀️
Love how you explain this wish you could do more video's, sometimes thoughts are so scary that you start to believe that you are in danger, when there is no reason to think that way. But because you feel anxious it creates more negative thoughts and it becomes a cycle . Wish you could share more skills to break those negative patterns and have more realistic logical thoughts ❤
LOVE this so much. I used to speak on this. This is why I don’t watch the news. The brain goes,”Oh you want this (good or bad by our focus on it) here’s more.” I believe this also involves the RAS system reticulator activating system. It’s the that part of the brain that works to keep us safe. When I’m aware of me going down a negative track I stop and try to a refocus on anything that is positive, beautiful etc. the awareness and focus is huge. Thanks again!!
Hello Emma, I hope you read this. Can you cover the topic "why do we get defensive so quickly and how to course correct". Your videos have helped me and I'm sure many others who are on the path of healing themseleves to live healthier more fulfilling life. Thank you for your generous and deep work. ❤
That was probably shame-trained in childhood would be my guess, someone focusing more on blame than lessons to be learned. But I believe it's natural to a point in all of us. It's just some of us have learned how to act and not react by stepping back from the situation and looking at over first as you would if you were a third party Observer. hard to do I'm still working on it but like so many other things she discusses it's definitely possible. Eventually it'll become a habit
I really appreciate your enthusiastic presentation. I personally think that things ARE worse than they have ever been, but that does not negate the truth of what you are saying regarding the negativity bias and how the media exploits it.
I have had anxiety for years but I have learned how to eat healthy and exercise more. I also make it a point to ALWAYS find a bright spot in any situation. My husband is currently dealing with the ravages of ALS. However we are so grateful for our blessings. He is still able to talk, eat and enjoy his family which we do try to keep upbeat. It is terrible but in the terrible there is also good. We spend more quality time together and praise the Lord. For the stress, I pray and I’m sure God has a plan much greater than mine. I journal, stay busy and when I catch myself getting negative (which does happen) I do something positive for him or someone else and try my best to focus on the good. Thank you for making this video. Love your videos
This is an excellent post. I have found in my experience and through my meditation that short circuiting these impulses requires mindfulness, especially early. I stop the cascade by focusing on the flower and not the spider. It gets easier over time with practice. I would also note that staying away from negative people helps in this regard. Not everyone is working in themselves 😊
It's nice to see somebody so optimistic, especially regarding that one bit about what the news and media have to say. You're right, things are very good right now (despite current conflicts and tragedies) compared to times past. And it really does point to the topic you bring up which is that we choose to focus on what's negative despite all the good surrounding it
This might work for some people, by itself, but I think a disclaimer is needed. I have found that this tool only has a positive and lasting effect for people in serious pain when it is used AFTER using the tool of validation. People in emotional pain like deep depression, or grief or trauma, or deal with chronic or acute physical pain, or someone in spiritual pain like with addiction, need validation first before using this tool. Just saying, for anyone in that boat, use with caution. Please find validation first and then move into this practice.
It has been absolutely crucial for me to fully acknowledge, validate and embrace what is actually here and happening and bothering me first before using tools to shift to another mindset. There is something very important and healing about that. What’s that quote? When I accept myself then I can change?
Yes Emma I loved this one. ❤️ it's seems like your a bit more excited in this video in some of your recent. It's like the same fun energy as your beginning one's. So AWESOME! THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR HELP.
Psychedelics are just an exceptional mental health breakthrough. It's quite fascinating how effective they are against depression and anxiety. Saved my life.
Can you help with the reliable source I would really appreciate it. Many people talk about mushrooms and psychedelics but nobody talks about where to get them. Very hard to get a reliable source here in Australia. Really need!
Yes, dr.sporessss. I have the same experience with anxiety, depression, PTSD and addiction and Mushrooms definitely made a huge huge difference to why am clean today.
I wish they were readily available in my place. Microdosing was my next plan of care for my husband. He is 59 & has so many mental health issues plus probable CTE & a TBI that left him in a coma 8 days. It's too late now I had to get a TPO as he's 6'6 300+ pound homicidal maniac. He's constantly talking about killing someone. He's violent. Anyone reading this Familiar w/ BPD know if it is common for an obsession with violence.
THANK YOU, Emma and Algorithmic Feed suggestions !!!! I guess I need to express gratitude for “the algorithm”, since I don’t actively search for Help in my anxiety/depression. I’m a musician struggling with Ménière’s Disease and isolation. Too much to go into here. Emma, Thank You for posting helpful videos like this !!!! I know it doesn’t replace actual Therapy, but it can be the “starting block/springboard” that me, and others like me, can use as an initiative step toward a more complete Therapeutic program.
This is what education should be about! It is that experience that results into better understanding and realizations and as a result we can navigate life better. Because when we know better, we can do better😊. Also I like that you mentioned about "toxic positivity"! This is the first time i've heard of how it is called but for the longest time i know the idea of it and never liked it. Some people in my life practice it and push for me to do the same but i've always found it to be not authentic, not truthful! I like your videos and I thank you for doing what you do! There are now a growing number of professionals who are spreading the word on how we can better understand our thoughts and behavior💕
I’ve been increasingly aware of my life long focus on negative thoughts and watched many TED talks and videos to help me get better at this life thing. This video is by far the most helpful. Thank you !

Really great video! You are so right! That is why prayer, meditation, and stepping away from media is such a great idea. However, that said, the world is worse than ever before. But the kids are great - it's the adults who are awful! 😉
It's kind of a balancing act, isn't it? Knowing that the world is at a critical juncture, but trying not to fixate on it, but also do our part to remedy the situation and remember that it's not all bad 😅
@@munkeefinkelbeen5395 Yeah, it is really about your fixation on things, it seems more easy now days to focus on the negative. You have to take effort.
I've been a "Law of Attraction" believer for years. This is just another way of explaining it. Thank you!. PS I haven't watched TV for years either. Life is Good!
Double Thumbs Up to your style of helping people. I think another reason to acknowledge the positive is our mind's imagery is the fuel of our creativity; and positive forward looking hopes and dreams produce much better results than our critical focus (usually blaming our feelings while focusing on the past). I stopped watching mainstream media years ago and it's the best thing I've done in a while. Also, "Climate Change Hysteria" is pure bollocks I found out after doing a lot of my own research on the subject (scouring actual government climate websites, listening to actual climate researchers and historians). Long story short, climate related deaths are DOWN by 95% over the past 100 years and are at their lowest in history. Polar Bear populations have increased by 300% over the past few decades, tropical storms are about the same, most of the hottest recorded temps in US history occurred in the 1920s and 1930s, water levels have barely increased (Climate Change/Global Warming people said the Statue Of Liberty was supposed to under water over 20 years ago... LOL... water level is essentially the same as when the Statue was placed there). The Great Barrier Reef is the largest it's been in a long, long time, and the media STILL tried to put a negative spin on it. Tropical storms are about the same as they were a century ago. Famine and poverty is at its lowest in the known history of humankind.... We are told these things. The only bad thing is I have friends who watch the news religiously daily and will tell me all about it. I also in my journal will write down any compliments I may get because we do tend to focus on only the negative. And men only get compliments about once every decade unlike women that get them daily.
The earths atmosphere used to contain 1,000pm (50Mya) ~ back when great white sharks evolved. It had 4,400-8,000ppm for the Cambrian explosion. When more diverse life forms showed up than any other point in history. The lowest ppm ever in earth history was just below 180ppm at the lowest the entire Earth was an ice ball, and the glaciers met at the equator. This ice age cycle happened 3x until (somehow? Volcanic activity?) the CO2 content reached >270ppm and was able to pull out of that ice age cycle... When 90% of all land dwelling species on the planet went extinct. 90%! People worry about one species (Polar Bear) when 90% are at stake if carbon content drops 150ppm. But almost nothing happens if it rises 150ppm. In fact, studies show doubling to 800ppm increased plant biomass by 30% and food production by almost 25% with no additional input. 😮 this is a free way how to solve word hunger...

1. Notice your negative thoughts
2. Take break from your negative thoughts
3. Slow your negative thoughts down
4. Challenge your negative thoughts (analyze)
And the best way to practice noticing your thoughts is to meditate or be present.

I had a hard time asking what I could be grateful for each day, because I felt like everything I had was from my hard work and not other's. So I changed it up and started keeping a "What went right today?" Journal. That has helped so much, by just changing the phrase just a little it's helped me to see more positive in my life.
That’s a great switch…..thank you so much ❤

Thank you for not being scared to speak truth about the psychology behind media propaganda!
Yeah! biased media affects all of us.
Or, the number of people who can’t think or glean information for themselves
@@_aididthat’s not confined to Bangladesh, either. Western countries are filled with creating fear - and lying. Need to question everything and look into many diff sources.
Especially far left CNN and far right Fox News.
I stopped watching and listening to the news 8,5 yrs ago. Life becomes so much nicer when you do that! I also block/delete ppl that are full of drama & negativity. You can choose to do this.
For me, gratitude changes everything.
I got rid of TV 14 years ago… don’t watch it, no Disney, No Netflix, No radio either….
My life has moved to way better levels since then.

I absolutely love this idea!
"I refuse now to make a hell out of my heavens." I really love it. Its going to be my best slogans.
There have been attempts at this, but they were not successful 😢
There is a channel on RUclips by Sam Bentley! He does positive worldly news updates each month 💛
That is such a good idea. I stopped watching the news as a teenager as it would depress me so much.
As a Christian pastor it’s pretty fascinating how everything you’re saying is what I say. Your content is solid, practical, and encouraging.
So interesting how people choose what to get from that book.
seems self gratifying congrats on god being so selfless.. like you
I wish I were a lot less selfish, honestly. And I'm not sure why you feel so cavalier about being rude and judgmental toward a total stranger you've never met. I wasn't trying to give myself a compliment. I was just intrigued that what I got out of the gospel aligns so closely to what this lady is saying.
It's fascinating that a Christian pastor stopped looking in the mirror long enough to read a RUclips post
implemented your suggestions and it works. Moved gratitude to expressing it more to others and not only has my life improved but it has had a very positive effect on those around me.
I am 65. You taught this old dog a very nice and very useful lesson.

Emma, your videos are so full of great information. Thank you for working to make the world a better place.
She is very good at it.
A lot of comments here about choice of thought, but the reality is that our brain gets a bigger hit off of fight or flight adrenaline than it does off of feel good stuff. This can become an addiction for us and we seek to feed it through the negative and what frightens us. It’s completely biological.
I need the other 29 parts of this therapy injected into my veins immediately
Negativity bias is definitely worse than it’s ever been.
lol....its awful
i think it’s the official policy of every political party on Earth rn
Literally negative bias 😂😂
We no longer watch the 6:00 pm news. We don't know and don't care. Feels much better.
Don’t know how this showed up in my feed, but couldn’t be more timely! What an awesome synopsis of the hole we dug ourselves into with social media!

Been noticing my nose a lot more since.
did you know what you see is also upside down because of the type of lens in the eye? The brain literally flips the image.
Right there with you :)❤
Agreed!

Now I actually like the new position way better than the old one.
this is also a good reminder for those with tinitus. exactly the same pattern. the more you focus on the noise in your ears, the more you hear it.
You are a fantastic human!
Thank you 💚
I needed to hear this today. As I am always anxious even when there is no reason to be anxious.
Emma,

Thank you for this series, and all that you do on this channel. You're such an amazing help to my journey toward better mental health
This is the video I was looking for. Thank you. You have also provided a helpful heuristics (for me, at least) by introducing the idea: hey mind thanks for the negativity bias (and your want to keep me alive) but I want to be happy too!
I've been thinking about this phenomenon a lot recently. Thanks for this video!
Thanks!
It compelled me to comment because I came from Instagram site and I was angry for no reason and hop in here and just what I needed it! Thank you so much, I feel better
Some people are hyper focused on the posiive and ignore what is going on in society and the harmthat is occuring
Beautiful! and perfect explanation.
What refreshingly clear perspective! Thank you very much for giving me a new outlook on life! 😊
Thank you so much for being passionate! Be the change !❤
Love this video! Been practicing this positive thinking for nearly a year and it has changed my life in so many ways ❤ spread the word! 🤗
"if it bleeds, it leads" is a common slogan in media.
Thank you 😢

It has been absolutely crucial for me to fully acknowledge, validate and embrace what is actually here and happening and bothering me first before using tools to shift to another mindset. There is something very important and healing about that. What’s that quote? When I accept myself then I can change?
Can you please link to the Validation tool? Thanks in advance

Because when we know better, we can do better😊. Also I like that you mentioned about "toxic positivity"! Double Thumbs Up to your style of helping people. I came across your channel yesterday. Today I can see what a positive event that was. Glad I recognized it. Thank you. I've decided to watch one of your videos each morning.
Emma, Your lessons are so great. I found you when I was at my lowest and you helped me in a major way, and still years later, I still listen to you.
