I love Eddie Van Halen's work. But watching Doyle right now reaffirm's my belief that there isn't a "best" or "greatest" guitarist. Just many men and women who can bring us great unique and original enjoyment from this musical instrument and we can all be grateful for that.
yes brother ..im a 68 year old guitarist that started at twelve..ive seen many many many gr8 players who have blessed my ears with amazing talent... how can one choose between an orange or an apple being the grtest fruit?\
Amen! 🙏\❤️ I’m now listening to this song for the second time today & crying even more this once... This song’s message is... ...too large to handle for a man when You start to go deeper into it. Amazing (grace!)!
You have a new fan, brother! I have a masters in music education and have been teaching elementary students for 32 years. I’m a multi-instrumentalist, a composer, and a song writer. Of all things, Eddie’s keyboard playing made me want to become a musician. Lately, my passion is playing hymns on classical guitar. I really get what you are doing and am absolutely blown away! You’ve honored Eddie and you’ve honored the Lord. And you’ve blessed me! Thank you.
Absolutely beautiful. I was gutted to hear of Eddie’s passing, he was a childhood hero and although it’s overused, he did change the face of music. No one sounded like VH, none (especially in the 70’s) played, had a sound or had melded those rhythmic elements to rock. I may be a thumb picker now but Eddie is still there at the beginning of my journey. Beautiful tribute Sir.
What EVH did for guitar was more than anyone else other than Jimi Hendrix - and even that one is debatable. When I was a kid, Eddie Van Halen was basically a real life superhero.
@@shred5 Him and Randy Rhoads (who, kinda like Hendrix, never really had enough time to show us what they really had planned) stood out to me from that 70's-80's transition (and the death of guitar music in the coming decade or so). Were there better musicians/composers/more influential guys? Sure. But those two were technically astonishing and genuinely changed music for sure.
@@cgavin1 "the death of guitar music in the coming decade or so" what does that even mean? I assure you that guitar music never died, it just changed faces and sound.
The universal force behind the song is making those tears flow. This song made me cry to, but I wasn’t that surprised by it. This song has caused my tears to fill up many times before. 😻👍
That is the sickest right hand 🖐️ exhibition I’ve ever seen. Flamenco 💃 string rakes. Right hand fingernail harmonics. I mean they do not make better guitarists than Mr Doyle Dykes. Total. Top. Tier. 10/10
There are a lot of talented musicians but when they are this humble and honest, it makes them even better. This man definitely has the spirit of the Lord in him, it resonates out of him as he talks.
Outstanding tribute to the late Mr. Van Halen. Beautifully and sensitively played with perfect music. I am sure the late Mr. Van Halen's family appreciates this wonderful tribute and anecdotal story. Thanks for sharing.
Breaks my heart to find channels like this with under 10k subs and see all these other crap channels with 100s of thousands. What a shame. You're a wonderful player and I'm glad I found your channel!
I can see what Eddie would have admired in your playing style. There's a precision and a finesse that is required to play this type of guitar without mistakes. There's no effect to mask a slight error. So to use the right hand as you do is much the same thing Eddie did, just in a different genre of the instrument. It's a deeper knowledge of the instrument that goes way beyond a basic understanding of the fretboard.
Thanks Doyle. Your playing is an inspiration to all guitarists familiar with your art. Your faith, sincerity and humility are an inspiration to all who possess an understanding heart.
My father used to sing that hymn in church. I think he learned it when he lived in Canada during the late 1950s. What a great tribute to one master from another.
I got a T-shirt recently that says "I play the guitar because I enjoy it...not because I am good at it!" After playing for 52 years I know that I will never have the talent of the great players like Doyle, Eddie, Dan Fogelberg, etc. but it brings me pleasure and I am still trying to get better. In my 50's I battled cancer for two years and sometimes just picking up my guitar and playing a little helped me get through the chemo and surgeries. Reading the comments about who is the best is so mind numbing....every one brings something to the table....so why not sit back and enjoy it!
Glasgow man here says thanks very much. Not much into rock But for a week or so I can’t get E Van Halens playing of ‘why can’t this be love’ out my ears. I can’t work out his musical talent. Late now. Thanks for sharing xx
Doyle ... That rendition gives me chills. Thanks so much. I took my wife to see you @ Willis in Florence, KY a couple years back. She's now a fan. Took my son (tall guy--you gave him a couple of fingerpicks), my grandson & son-in-law a couple years later. They are all fans. When you play all those open strings, it reminds me of why I wanted to play guitar in first place--just to make those strings sing! Thanks much.
Wow that made me cry so hard i loved him so. absolutely changed my life literally from the first time i heard the first album first real guitar 1962 melody maker
God Bless you Doyle, from one Guitarist to another. I have earned my living playing the guitar and have grown to love it more and more. I literally grew up playing the guitar at age 4 and now at age 68 i love the guitar EVEN MORE THAN EVER. Praise the Lord.
I saw Doyle Dykes in San Angelo, Texas where he was playing and selling Taylor Guitars. He is an amazing player! I talked to him for a while after the show, and I've been a fan ever since.
Nothing like when the giftee uses the gift to testify of how great the Giver is. Got to meet Brother Dykes once and strikes me as a genuine man of God.
Doyle, having finally accepted MY LORD & JESUS CHRIST into my 76 year old body I can’t help but seeing how GOD has blessed us all with clearly the very best guitarist ever. Thanks for sharing. Dave in Phoenix Arizona USA
Mr Dykes I remember seeing you at the Lawndale Guitar Center in a little booth with about 7 people And I asked you to play the Lords Prayer like Larry Carlton. But you played it your own version . How great it was. Your brother in Christ, thank you.
Doyle I love your playing and I love your stories. Seeing you in Big Sandy a couple of years ago with wild man guitar tech extraordinaire, Kelly Barber, was a highlight. Neat story about Eddie, reminds my of the story of you playing in front of Allen Collins and Ronnie Van Zandt. The coolest part of your stories is that you weave honor to God Almighty into them. May God be praised!
Big Edward Van Halen fan (and guitar player) here. I was browsing RUclips for EVH tributes and this video popped up in the feed. Was hesitant to click on it, but felt like I should. Glad I did! Doyle, I never heard of you, but I know you now! That was a heartfelt, gorgeous & epic version of "How Great Thou Art" in honor of Ed. I totally connected with it. I'd like to think EVH would have also. Might have been the best tribute I've watched all week on RUclips. New fan & subscriber. GOD Bless you.
Saw him perform last week at one of his friends new guitar store in St Petersburg. Had front row seats with my wife and were amazed. A true entertainer and a true man of God.
When your great peers are in awe of your abilities, it truly says something. Those shooting stars are rare. Eddie had it. Judy Garland was another from past generations. Her peers in Hollywood had no words for her talent and voice. It’s shocking and sad when those stars move on.
heard eruption my first year of high school in"78", that's the day i became a frustrated musician. so many memories as i watch these tributes...thanks Doyle and thank you MIGHTY EDDIE VAN HALEN!!!

I'm one of those who think Eddie was the greatest, but after reading your comment I think I have a new way of looking at things. Thanks.
I’m cool with that !
Michael Ferreri....that is the honest to goodness truth!!!!
