- Should you use the Pimsleur method to learn a language?
I just finished going through all 30 lessons of pimsleur chinese level 1.
This video is about my experience as well as some advice for anyone thinking of using Pimsleur to learn a language.

I listened to four courses of Pimsleur Spanish some years ago, and with a zero prior knowledge I was able to travel around in Chile for 6 months on my own, getting much better as I went on. I think the priority of Pimsleur programs is good. They teach you the core of a language, making you feel comfortable using it. The vocabulary can easily be expanded once you feel confident using the language. I'm now doing Pimsleur Chinese as well.
How is it going?????
Thank you for the thorough detail and your assessment. The tip about the Chrome plug-in and Peppa Pig - freakin' awesome! I will add this to my toolkit. Thank you so much!
Super helpful video, thank you!
Excellent video.
Avid language lover here. (ASL, Arabic/Egyptian/Moroccan/Gulf, Spanish, French, and now Mandarin)
You've made some great points about the pros and cons of the PIMSLUER method.
I feel the PIMSLUER method is phenomenal for pronunciation practice and as an introduction to basic conversation in the languages it offers.
I do agree it's not going to make you fluent but more comfortable with the sounds of the language.
Although for me it's a wonderful motivator in keeping me speaking and a great supplement to other resources.
I hope you'll include a progress/part 2 video on this.
Especially since I'm currently on Pimsleur Chinese myself.
Thank you! I will make another follow up video when I finish level 2. I'm currently halfway through. 加油!

Super Excited! New Subbie.
Can you give me some pointers on how you learnt Moroccan (Darija) please?
Would Standard arabic help me get around in Morocco? and help me learn Darija? ty
Thank you for your advice
I'm researching different methods to learn Mandarin. Thank you for the Pimsleur review and the other sources you used!
How many check points did you get through Duolingo before you started Pimsleur?
@@jennaduvall1245 hey
What all methods did you find to learn mandarin ?
Would love to know more
Also what method is the most effective
I just found this app today and I’m thinking of learning Italian, moving to Italy next year. I hope this will be a good start and once I’m there I’m sure I’ll pickup more things and learning with being social and surround by it!
It's been great for me. If you can stay motivated it's a great option in my opinion. I'm just struggling with the motivation part right now. But still pushing through.
Make more videos bro! Very informative ty!
Keep going 😊
Are you interested to actually hear what I've learned? Comment below if you want to see a video of my progress so far.
I would love to hear about how useful it's been. This video was a good listen. Thank you
@@GTheSupreme In terms of retention how valuable is it? I'm starting Pimsleur Portuguese and curious if it's worth the time.
Yes! How is the progress?? I have just found pimsleur. I am learning French, I have found it really good! I also use my vpn to watch French Kids TV:-)
@@Loubell_83 Progress update coming next week! I'll have to try the VPN thing
@@trevoncampbell5589 it works! I am watching like ages 3 years kids TV but it's just enough for me to begin to recognise words I have learned etc. I have also ordered some books so I can start to read. I am looking forward to the progress update! Do you speak any other languages fluently?
For Russian, Pimsleur 5 levels got me to a point where I sort of got the feel of the language that I never needed to study grammar. And Russian grammar is hard. I moved on to a 5000 word frequency list and Glossika GMS and it got me to a point that I can understand just about every conversation I have (sometimes in a couple weeks I'll hear a new word and I look it up, but mostly can green from context what it means). Understand Russian social media almost 100% as well.
That's great! I'd definitely call that a success! I may have to take that approach also.
Pimsleur has people learn the language by inference of the grammar. Listen and apply it so many times correctly, you know it sounds right or when it sounds wrong.
Hi Trevor, may I have the link for subscription for Pimsleur? TQ. Awesome videos
Hey Trevon ! Do you have a Twitter account where you share your progess/news about your languages learning progess ?
Hey Trevon. About a year ago I went through the first 3 levels of Pimsleur Chinese and it was hell. I think the Pimsleur Method is so boring but it was a good way for me to get introduced into the language. Sinnce then I've dropped Chinese for the while to focus on improving my Spanish. Your video has me wanting to start back Chinese honestly. Looking forward to more of your videos.
btw make sure and private your playlists. we could see the stoicism and audiobook ones
@@zacharyramsumair23 haha thanks for the heads up. And thanks for watching. Trying to push through the lessons is hell that's for sure but your comment motivates me to keep going. I'll have a new video out soon!
@@zacharyramsumair23 Why did you drop one language and switch, instead of finishing one to a high enough level?
I know of many people who do that and never become proficient enough in any language. It is almost they are forever beginner levels in every language, and even with that, they forgot the others they did, since they did not fortify them in their minds and have to do it all over again.
@@alanguages I agree with u on most of that. I think that's why I went back to Spanish. My Spanish is the usual post high-school type so nothing special but it's a foundation therefore I think it's possible that it could be forgotten. Personally I don't know how much learning Chinese would have benefitted my life and in my country there are many Spanish speakering people migrating in so I think focusing on Spanish is a better option
@@zacharyramsumair23 Which country?
If English is stronger for you, then Spanish will be an easier language to learn. It is proven an easier subject, pays dividends to learn more difficult ones.
It was odd to see you had made it past the half way point for Pimsleur Chinese, but then abandon it. What you just learned is going to sink, but it depends if you intend on making it worth your while.
Thanks for the great tips! I completed 5 levels of Spanish a few years ago. I'd do each lesson twice. First time, just listen and repeat. Second time, write every word on a scrapbook by pausing the lesson very often to look up the words. Then I'd write the lesson again neatly on another book. I'd do one lesson a day. I'll follow a similar approach to Chinese. Any thoughts on this?
That sounds great! If you can stay motivated then I'm sure you'd see some great results. I personally think I'd get burnt out doing a lesson twice a day but props to you if you can!
I think doing the lessons twice a day make a lot of sense. I do it as well and it works for me.
Nice video! How far are you into level 2? Is it hard to stay consistent with Pimsleur?
Thank you! I'm about done but man was it tough! I think it depends on your personality. For me it started to get really difficult to stay consistent. I'll do a video covering my experience with lvl 2 soon
Very informative video !!
Two questions
a) Any specific reason that you went for Chinese vs Spanish or any other language ?
b) Did you also evaluate any other method apart from Pimsleur and Duolingo ?
Great questions!
a) After I learned Tagalog I actually started to learn Spanish but I quickly lost interest. Chinese is another useful language so I started to play around with it and was immediately hooked. I guess I went for Chinese because I just found it more interesting to learn. I'll get back to Spanish one day
b) I have not tested any other apps or programs. After reading a lot of reviews of other methods, Pimsleur seemed to be the right fit for my learning style. I may test others in the future.
@@trevoncampbell5589 Thanks for your response, appreciate it.
Thanks so much for this video! How did you learn Tagalog to fluency? I’m so sad it’s not on duolingo!
Thanks for watching! I lived there for two years and spoke it every day as a missionary so eventually I got pretty good at it. Yeah I wish it was on Duolingo so my wife could start learning the basics!
A couple years later, how is your chinese getting on?
I got a Pimsleur ad 💀
I think if they lower the price at iBooks people will actually start to buy it
How many levels does Chinese have?
5 levels
Trevon my apologies for spelling error on your name
Can somebody PLEASE tell me if I need to learn “Chinese (Cantonese)” or “Chinese (Mandarin)” on the Pimsleur app if I’m trying to learn “Taiwanese Mandarin”? I’m so confused and nobody will give me a clear answer 😭
Cantonese and mandarin are totally different dialects. If you want to speak to taiwanese people you should learn Mandarin.
If you ever start to learn to read and write then you'll have another choice between simplified and traditional mandarin. If you want to continue to learn "taiwanese mandarin" then you should choose to learn traditional Chinese characters. But pimsleur is mostly just audio so you don't have to deal with that yet. Long story short, learn Mandarin. Not Cantonese if you want to speak to taiwanese people.
@@trevoncampbell5589 okay yayyyy thank you so much I have other apps that can teach me mandarin !!!! ^-^ thank you so much you’re so helpful !!
