    Much of this video had to be re-edited to be allowed on RUclips, which may rob it of some impact. But I hope if nothing else this video convinces you to give the series a watch for yourself.

      It’s honestly just an exaggeration of normal elephant behavior. Elephants are very emotional creatures that will mourn the death of a clan member, especially a matriarch, and while they don’t have graveyards like believed, they will visit the place that a member died.
      Some have even been known to mourn human conservationists. While we can never know mammoth behavior, they likely had similar behaviors and practices.

    I love the idea of the Scorpion being a dark mirror to Spear, a savage and murderous barbarian-warlord as opposed to the noble, humble and protective nature of Spear. A more human and insidious villain like him would be a great contrast to the previous villains in the show and really shake things up, giving Spear and Fang a problem they can’t just solve with brute force. Personally I’m thinking the next season will have the land of Primal being colonized by the Scorpion’s armies, given that they’ve already brought over a ship with slaves and are probably bringing more if they aren’t already doing so. Literally nothing and no one is a villain in this series. There is no morality, and there is no line to cross. It's pure survival of the fittest. Also, traditional concepts of good & evil only came about after the fall of Rome & spread of Judeo-Christian morality. Objectively, these things do not exist.

    • @KevinJohnson-cv2no
      @KevinJohnson-cv2no Год назад

      @B J C They were, but cultures waxing on about *THEIR* morals and ethics has nothing to do with *TRADITIONAL* concepts of good & evil lmao; Greek culture waxed on about its "morals", but these were the very same morals that stated if you conquered and enslaved nations you'd have a comfy spot in Elysium (the heaven of The Underworld; reserved for Great spirits, not "good" ones) waiting for you.
      Pagan morality praised greatness of action, not goodness of character; an axis which would be continued and deepened with the Romans, and finally abandoned after the fall of the empire. It was with Judeo-Christianity (originally having its' moral roots in the self-denying "virtues" preached by Socrates) that morality would evolve into the self-sacrificing act of pure weakness it has been for millennia now.
      Now it's good to be poor, kind, compassionate, etc. anything that's against strength and the exertion of it. Now no longer is the Caesar exalted (who bragged of exterminating 1 million Gauls and enslaving a million more), but rather jesus is (who spent his life being spit & shat on by those in power, until being thrown on a cross for dead).

I feel like it’s something that is never mentioned among the fan community of Primal, because the first episode is literally a battle between 3 vengeful, angry parents whose families were in the wrong place at the wrong time.
    Edit: I also have a personal theory that the world of Primal takes place in an alternate timeline/universe wherein the KT mass extinction event never occurred, however there was still a large enough decline in large dinosaurs that mammals could begin to evolve in small pockets and populations around the world until eventually colliding with the non-avian dinosaurs and merging together. This is further validated by the fact that all of the Mesozoic reptiles we see are Cretaceous species, though not necessarily Maastrichtian (Short-necked Pliosaurs are generally associated with the Jurassic but Kronosaurus did manage to make it into the early Cretaceous).

    As for Plague of Madness, it didn't seam like a natural disease, the two animals with it seemingly acting vigorously well, well..well past the point where they should be dead. Rather it seams more to be a curse, a magical plague. Also notice that once the plague/curse is passed from one animal to another, fresher animal, the madness seams to pass from its eyes, meaning that perhaps one one animal at a time IS ever affected, but the hosts body quickly burns out, so it needs to pass from one animal to another rather rapidly.
    Given some of the other supernatural elements in the setting, this explanation seams rather possible. I mean, the bodies of two animals with his, had hollowed out bodies, shattered bones and missing muscle mass to the point the bodies shouldn't have structurally moved. And then is the eyes, that's the tell, the passing of the curse, when the curse passes from one to the other, the eyes change and the former host can die (mind you a volcano works wonders too) .

    Primal as a show is quite special and it seems that everyone loves it and I do too.
    I love the way the story is told with no dialogue and more importantly with dinosaurs, while it’s not uncommon to see dinosaurs in animated series, it’s less common to see them take centre stage to the plot. Dinosaurs are more often than not used as single silly episode and just never brought up again. One thing I’ve noticed is that dinosaurs are mostly unused in adult animation as well. So primal is a breath of fresh air to me as it can use dinosaurs in a mature manner and not just for some silly joke in a off hand comment.

Of course, Fang does have a level of emotional intelligence, but it's small and she has nearly no social intelligence. Spear, as a mammal and a human being, has high levels of both. Spear understands things Fang cannot, like why the mammoths would want the tusk, and symbology like the skull carvings in "Terror Under the Blood Moon." The fifth episode is full of symbology and meaning that Fang cannot understand. It's one of the key differences between them, and it's one of the things that keeps their dynamic interesting.

    Primal is such a great show with it's unpredictability and it's story telling without "modern" communication.
    My favorite thing by far is the perspective of danger of our protagonists. To give an example, every episode where Fang is an ally we can see her size next to Spear, not being that much bigger then him when we compare her height. But in the episode River of Snakes while they fight in the rain, she is massive to the point where his entire body fits in her jaws, something that would seam impossible in any other screen shot in the series. With other eyes we could think that everything in this series has size inconsistency, but with the focus on visual storytelling, this feels very much intentional as: The bigger the threat, the larger it is perceived. That was the only instance where Fang was a "villain" towards Spear so her massive size showed us his perspective of the danger he is facing. This would also happen with any other creature they go up against, different sizes in different shots depending of how the situation is being handled by our heroes and they're perspectives.
    Edit: Loved this format and I would love to see more of this type of video depending on what we are discussing about, this works well for episodic formats like Primal and Primeval

    Primal is an incredible exploration of both the paleo-fantasy genre and the narrative potential of animation with mature themes for mature audiences. Even if the violence gets a little hard for me to stomach, this story stands as one of my favourites of Tartakovsky's cartoon canon and one of the stories that inspire me to pursue a career in REAL adult animation.
    Even with the trials of RUclips's bloody (pun not intended) copyright system, I still really enjoyed your discussion of the series in this video and how well you worked around these hurdles. Your analyses and summary of each episode's events and highlights had me riveted. I have an even bigger appreciation and love for it as I'm a really massive fan of anthropology and ancient human history. I still can't watch the show in one sitting because of sheer brutality (I'm a massive baby when it comes to animal deaths) but I seriously love this show and am so looking forward to it's second season.

The author who created Conan the barbarian and the greater world of Hyborian age of 12 000 years ago that he created for Conan to have his adventures in. This story could easily take place in the jungles of Kush, Darfar, or the mysterious black kingdoms in the far south regions of Conan's world.

    One of the things I like when Mira was cooking the food she found, you could see she was adding ingredients to make it taste good. It something that a bit alien to spear, like spear is no stranger to cooking food, as we seen with him cooking the bugs over a fire to feed fang, but he never seen or had food cook with so many, ingredients to make it taste good. Where fang sniffing something super taste, went straight into it like a dog smelling food. Spear was a little be less okay with it, as I would guess being his food just have the stander bland taste of them. while trying what Mira made could have, overloaded his taste buds to not enjoying it kind of like how some humans eat food that has a familiar taste to it, and dislike something that is unknown to their tongue.

    Out of all the episodes I find the Night Terror episode felt underwhelming since it has a plot similar to Plague of Madness, but the parallels that you talk about actually starts to make the episode its own
    The still believe on the theory that the Night Terror might be the Troodon that the duo scared off. How I interpret it, the Troodon has lives its life having to hide among the shadows of prehistoric fauna much larger than it, giving it no room for living a free life knowing any creature can crush or hunt it. At some point the Troodon might have discovered the black goo that powered its body, giving flashing speed and long, sharp claws capable of slashing through anything. With this overwhelming power, its now capable of killing anything in sight, probably gaining an unbrideled rage against the apex predators or armoured herbivores that have ignorant on its existence. That might be reason why its hunting Spear and Fang down, because when they scared the Troodon during the day, the two are now on its hit list.

He's a amazing writer and knows how to assemble a staff with each show to get his vision out there. Samurai Jack shows that Genndy knows how to write a wordless scene with how much of Jack's adventure was him wandering without a word. Show don't tell is the way we all discovered what was happening along side Jack, Primal is no different. We connect with Spear and Fang through a similar medium, here's hoping for a second season.

    When it comes to Plague of Madness, I don't think this is a disease (even if "plague" is in the episode name). Since we've seen later in the series that magic exists, I think this is perhaps a curse of some kind. The other sauropods don't seem to turn, even if they don't have fatal wounds. Instead, it seems that the sauropod that killed the original dinosaur "acquired" the curse after said curse left the other dinosaur. It would at least somewhat explain why, even after sustaining quite a lot of damage, the sauropod isn't slowed down or seen to lose ability; it stays as deadly and determined as when it first began it's rampage.
    I think that, since it didn't manage to kill another creature at the time that it died, the curse couldn't transfer. Or, perhaps, the curse jumped to one of the sauropods that had been killed earlier. Who knows?
    Edit: Also, I looked up gas gangrene on google images, and it made me slightly uncomfortable.

    • @Appletank8
      @Appletank8 2 года назад +5

      Seems like the Curse can only transfer after dying shortly after biting something? We don't get a scene of some other animal only getting lightly wounded by the bite and getting away, so this is some very heavy speculation.

    I never noticed the connection between Spear and the sun and the way it parallels Mira and the moon, that’s rather brilliant.
    I like how in some cases the series has kinda shown human evolution backwards. Hairy, primitive apes have advanced societies with simple machinery and construction which aids in complex rituals that reinforce hierarchies- on the other hand, hairless, thin, wiry, pale men like you’d expect to see in the modern day enjoying the spoils of being at the top of the food chain cower like rodents underground, exhibiting little more in the way of advancement than carving crude warnings into stone and crafting basic clothing
    It’s like some odd time anomaly. Every period on earth is present in some way at the same time, but somehow including the supernatural. It could just be part of the Flintstones but violent vibe, but something tells me there’s something very wrong with the world Spear and Fang live in

    • @panthera9151
      @panthera9151 2 года назад +5

      Personally I don't think that the cave dwellers are responsible for the monoliths. Perhaps, as the video suggests, the carvings were created by something that lived there before, or the cave dwellers are the descendants of those people. My personal theory that the blood bats are not of natural origin, and might be the result of some ritual involving the monoliths, and the same force that's behind the supernatural events that occur later.

    "coven of the damned" is what made me think that Primal takes place in the same setting as Samurai Jack. They're made by the same person so it makes sense. Sort of like how Aku's corruption before there actually was an Aku. It would also explain where the oil looking mutagenic steroid and the plague of madness came from given their similarities to some stuff caused by Aku in Samurai Jack. The corruption also could cause giant monsters so it's not that far off to assume that the bats and spider were a result of that. Pretty sure my main connections between the two I have is that black oilly substances and green lights are indications of Aku. Like Aku's robots being filled with the oil stuff or the primordial corruption that eventually spawned Aku is similar.

    Commenting from a little ways into the future, Primal seemed very foreign to me as I was never a fan of hyper violent media. But the way you essentially summarized the entire season for me in a way that's not only informative (giving light into the inspiration for creature design and behaviour), but also insightful (each episode had something for the viewer to learn about life, human nature, and the primordial forces that drive us to survive), made me realize that this was finally a series meant for adults-- Not just the fact that it's brazen in its depictions of gore and brutality-- but also in its way to force viewers into very heavy introspection.
    The Plague of Madness episode in particular is what I believe to be the harshest episode to grasp for a younger audience, as it would probably be very confusing for a younger mind to understand that tragedy can befall anyone, regardless of the human concept of good and evil. And that sometimes, there is no lesson. Just that you're still alive, and thats enough.
    I genuinely want to thank you for the effort you put to explain the entire series and each episode in its entirety, as I feel like I wouldn't have enjoyed the series as much as I do now if it was just a simple review of the series as a whole.
    I'm also sending this as you're probably already aware that Season 2 is in active production, and I can't wait for you to cover it in the same manner as this video. If you find that you can't, that's fine too. As this video may serve as a wonderful gateway to new fans of the series.

    I've never heard of this show, but I was enthralled by your exploration and now I have to look it up. I think I learned more about just the natural world from this, than any current nature program out there. Your investigation and presentation were spot on and had me fascinated the entire time. Very good work

    Just came across this video after subscribing for monster hunter content. I stopped this video during the introduction to watch the first episode to see if I was into it. I then binged seasons 1 and 2 up to what's released in the past day or two and I'm completely hooked. I can't wait for more. Thanks for this video!

    The greatest compliment I can give this video is that, initially, I kinda brushed off Primal. I'm not super into what it was initially marketed as RE: tons of hyper-violence. However, watching your exploration of it has convinced me to go back and give it a chance. So thank you for that.

    Honestly a great recap and discussion of Primal. Took a random chance to watch this and didn’t regret it, even had me googling terms and coming up with theory and discussion relating to evolutionary traits and such. Hopefully once season 2 comes out, you’ll continue this series.

    Episode 3 is the absolute best! And the old apes outfit reminds me of Joseph Jostar (part4 version)

    Primal's been on my backlog for a while. I knew it'd be good, but hadn't had the time to give it. Maybe this video's a bit too meaty to consider an appetizer, but it's got me even more excited to check it out properly.
