- In this art tutorial filmed for my channel, I delve into the world of mixed media within the pages of the Dina Wakley Media Journal. Utilizing various materials like SoFlat acrylic paints, NeoColor 2 pastels, Stabillo woody's, and pencils, I guide viewers through the process of creating an abstract floral painting inspired by both a previous floral video and the renowned artist Gustav Klimt. The journal's unique combination of watercolor and canvas pages provides an ideal canvas for experimentation and exploration. Throughout the video, I demonstrate techniques for building layers, adding texture, and achieving a balanced composition, offering viewers insights into my creative process and encouraging them to embark on their own artistic journeys.

The vase and background...oh my goodness...they sing the song of my abstract heart💞
So glad you loved this!! Thank you! 🥰
Please, more florals! I paint flowers a lot and, thanks to your tutorials, I can make the backgrounds a lot more interesting. The layer after layer technique just keeps me from giving up on paintings that have lost the plot. You are the best, Denise!
So glad you love the florals! I’ll definitely do more! Thank you! 🥰
the colours in this are stunning ☺☺
Thank you! 🥰
Always love flowers like these!
Me too! Thank you! 🥰

🌸💐🌺🌷🌻
Absolutely beautiful! Yes please on a floral series.

Hi Denise, thank you for showing us the value of revisiting an old piece that we loved so much, just for the fun of it. I myself tried it several times in the past, but my case was a bit different. The first versions were all done spontaneously, with my unbridled joy pouring out of me onto the canvas and just because I felt like it at the time. The second versions happened to be all commissioned pieces based on the original ones. Although the patrons were all happy and content with the end result, personally I felt less joy doing them, definitely they were not spontaneous and I thought they were overworked. Maybe working on a commission tends to kill the spontaneity and dim the creativity. Maybe I should try to revisit my old, most loved pieces, just for my own pleasure and personal learning experience.
Lovely video and thank you for always sharing, encouraging and inspiring us. ❤
I think the pressure of the commission definitely would be less fun for me too. So glad you enjoyed this! Thank you! 🥰
You are so talented. And I love your candor, and your openness to learning, experimenting, and going where your intuition takes you!
Thank you so much! 🥰🥰🥰
I love love it! ❤
Thank you! 🥰
I love that you redid this " somewhat" Denise! ❤ I can't wait to see what you do with the one you had not recorded? I think with all the beautiful abstract art within this journal, adding the floral notes here and there just brings more interest to the whole work of pages. ❤❤❤
That other one is in the queue now! I went a different direction 😁 Thank you! 🥰
Love this piece. The colors are sooo pretty. I have to try this one. Thanks so much lady. Hope you have a great week.😊
Thank you! You too! 🥰🎨🤗
Incredible, Denise! The layer upon layer upon layer really works. I didn’t think it would make that much difference but with each layer the flowers just popped and got better and better.. Adding the white to tone down the background was perfect. The canvas half looks liked needle point from up close. I would love to see a floral series as long as you have fun with it and don’t feel you are obligated to us if you decide to stop after one or two.
Thank you! 🥰
Beautiful Denise 😍 A big fat YES to abstract floral series please.
Monet’s water lily series was approximately 250 paintings, so there’s a challenge 😆
Love all the layers in your piece and inspired by the pencil marks and textures.
A joy and inspiration to watch 🙏🏻😍🙏🏻
Thank you! 🥰
Thanks!
Eeeek! You’ve really made my day! Thank you! 🥰
I would love to see a series on florals!
Thank you! 🥰
I would love a whole series
Loved this ❤
Thank you! 🥰
It's good to revisit/re-vision previous artworks, because you can take what your learned from the original piece and take that forward into the new piece and it some how adds to the fun of creating the new piece too,I love that you scaled up in the joural spread version of the abstract florals infused by the inspiration of Gustav Klimt.I think if you do create a series based on this idea it could look amazing and you could re-vision it differently each time in new pieces.I often work in series in my own work,it can also help you develop as an artist too.(matt)
Yes.. I’m thinking revisiting g it differently each time! I have to stew on that idea! Thank you! 🥰
@@2lilowlsstudio Maybe in future versions/revisions of this idea you could add some gold/metallics maybe,to add som shimmer to the abstract florals...(matt)
I am a lit.tle bit *obsessed* with this piece! I LOVE it and will absolutely have to give it a try! 🤩
So glad you love it!! Thank you! 🥰
I cant tell you how much I love your "free for all" approach to creating! And that you don't always know what's going to happen, no plan, just paint and see what comes! I totally paint like that... a general idea, but no plan! Its so liberating!
I’m glad you create that way too!! It really is so freeing letting go of all of the expectations! Thank you! 🥰
I love this one even more than the first one! Love this. I have never done any abstract florals but would love to try this myself.
So glad you love it! Thank you! 🥰
SPEC-TACULAR !!!! 💗🧡❤🧡💚💙 I absolutely do LOVE-LOVE this spread. Good grief, my head is spinning trying to figure out how to create something like this with a combo of watercolor and acrylic, stabilo woodies, neocolor II's.....I have some raw canvas left over that I'm wondering about too. See - I need you to come over for coffee and just spin ideas with me🤩. I so am hoping you will do a series on florals because I too love them. I've photographed them and they ALWAYS say to me "see, I play so much nicer than people do in front of your lens". 🤪😝 Today's video is fantabulous!!! Thank you beyond words! I'd call this spread "Explosion of Color". Hee hee!
You could totally do this in watercolor and those other supplies!! Can’t wait to see if you tried it! So glad you enjoyed this one! Thank you! 🥰
Love this one too! I’ve just started a new canvas, I wasn’t sure where it was going but I know now! Yes please a series of formal abstract would be great!
Have fun 🎨🎨🎨 Thank you! 🥰
I see another vase on the canvas page, lower right in orange. 😊 i would love more florals. Thank you for sharing.
So glad you enjoyed it! Thank you! 🥰
I haven’t even watched it yet and I already liked it!
It turned out beautifully and I need to try when I get my artelier room set up in my new place. Thank you for the inspiration!
Thank you! 🥰
Yes I really enjoyed watching you do these flowers. I’m not necessarily a flower/floral painter but I did love what you did here. Thank you.
I'm so glad! Thank you! 🥰
so fun and inspiring, as always. Thanks! And PS, I happen to love the new one even better than the other.
I just looked through the book yesterday for something I’m doing… and came across this page… and I really love it now! Funny how we change our minds later! Thank you! 🥰
That’s fun to hear. I wondered if that might happen, because you mentioned it could. It happens to me soOoo often! A fresh look so often equals a whole new perspective. That’s so interesting to me…
A series on florals would be great and I think I may love this layout as much as your original.
Thank you! 🥰
I think it looks awesome. I will definitely try this!
Have fun! 🎨 Thank you! 🥰
❤❣
Thank you! 🥰
Such an interesting way to create abstract florals!!😍
Thank you! 🥰
I really like both versions of your abstract florals. I especially like seeing how you push back the background with lighter color. That part always makes me scared but I'm going to try it. After all, it's just paper and paint. You also mentioned in previous videos regarding duplicating an art piece that the original will always be looser and more flowing because you are in the moment. The duplicate could maybe be more challenging since you were trying to force a specific outcome. (This is my summary and understanding of your explanation.) Anyway, I found it interesting that you were experiencing some of those feelings here. This was a good art and learning day for me. Thanks for the master class.
So glad you enjoyed this one! Thank you! 🥰
Another great fun piece - need to try this one. Particularly love the background- has a gorgeous vintage/shabby chic vibe!! Thanks again for sharing and inspiring Denise. Regards from the UK.
Thank you! 🥰
Love the background
And … and … and abstract floral series would be AMAZING
Thank you! 🥰
I love this so much. I am kind of obsessed with doing it. I did it once with a watercolor base and water-soluble art supplies (Caran d' Arche neopastel II's, watercolor pencils, etc.) because watercolor is what I am used to. But then I tried it with the Blick Mattes and Golden So Flats. That was really fun. Now I want to either do it again or go back to the matte version to put more of the paint back in. I think my mark-making took away too much of that beautiful paint. It is a super fun learning experience. I love trying all your abstracts, but I really loved this because I, too, enjoy flower photography. Also this fusion one gave me something a little more definable to reach visually. Abstract art is so new to me. I am not quite sure about it, but I know I love the freedom of it!
Thanks so much for all the enthusiasm and inspiration to bring through your videos. I am hooked!
So glad you love doing these! I need to play again with this technique and experiment more with the florals in abstract!! Thank you! 🥰
I love swirly flower making and thought this came out so beautifully! Also, as a fellow photog I’m with you about enjoying flowers and other things…anything besides portraits of people. Tried that and it was too stressful for me.
Right? Photographing people IS stressful! 😂 so glad you enjoyed this! Thank you! 🥰
Love the layers. So difficult to like one painting over the other...you said in another video: "like choosing a favorite child". Still difficult for me to feel free in my journal and many times do something on paper and then tape it in journal. Lol
So true!! Thank you! 🥰
This is one of my favorite videos yet. I somehow missed the one for the piece you framed, but I’m going to search for it now. Also, I’ve been using your textures for years in my photography - thank you! And I’m just now making that connection. 😂
Someone else said that after watching these that she finally made the connection too… I get it… not the subject you are used to seeing me in after all the photo years! 😁 So glad you are enjoying my art things too!! Thank you! 🥰
I love this one as much as the first. I love that it's a bit more vibrant.
I love it more now when I look at it than I did when I painted it! Thank you! 🥰
yes please
Thank you! 🥰
It was a joy to watch this one come together! 😊😊😊
Thank you! 🥰
Flowers aren’t usually my jam, but these are so easy to make that I may try it! Thanks for the inspiration.
Have fun! 🎨 Thank you! 🥰
Inspired to try this approach in my journal. I wonder how the leaves would appear if you had a representation of 1, 2, or 3 leaves throughout the structure.
That would be cool! 🎨🎨🎨 Thank you! 🥰
Do the Woodies need to be fixed so they don't smear where you don't want them once you close the page? Aren't they and the Neocolors sort of like oil pastels that way? This is gorgeous! I'm going to have to try one soon.
I don’t fix them. They are more like a wax crayon. I don’t have any issues with smudging. 😊
❤️🌞🇨🇦⛅️
Thank you! 🥰
How are you keeping the pastels in place? As you flip through the book, wouldn't they rub against the opposite page and migrate? I thought it is said that these oil pastels don't actually "dry". Is there a way to seal them, like you can with chalky pastels?
You seal them with the oil pastel spray if you use them: SENNELIER D'Artigny Oil Pastel Fixative - amzn.to/3X9DfMg
@@2lilowlsstudio Thanks so much for the answer. And thank you for inspiration as well!
What are the dimensions of your media journal?
It is pretty big. Like 10”x14” I think… I just released a class this week on making our own journal like this one since they are no longer available. I’ll have a video out this week showing those. You can check it out here if you want to make your own: Check it out on my site: 2lilowls.com/product/artisanal-journals-learn-to-bind-your-own-art-journals/ or on Skillshare: skl.sh/3V8Yoad
