  • This course covers the creation of VFX production assets of an inorganic nature. Lectures will cover creation of form, efficient manipulation of topology, the art of kitbashing, scene organization, texture preparation, light rigging techniques that will aid in the modeling process, and final rendering. Students will learn the process of efficiently creating high-quality hard surface models from concept to completion, and complete exercises that will give them the tools to overcome typical challenges faced by production artists.

if someone can tell me the difference between the process to make hardsurface for film and video games ?? plz

Mesh optimization. A game asset is closely observed for its triangulated wireframe to make sure most amount of triangles support the overall shape of the object. You also need to create level of detail models for each object in the game depending on their visibility. Texturing in a video game asset uses tricks like storing multiple textures in rgb channels to preserve callbacks for larger texture. Hard surface for films are exclusively clean topology, created with subdivision in mind and therefore they have an evenly laid out quad flow, the reason being that this gives a predictable subdivision of mesh. Texturing for a movie asset uses 4K maps or more for capturing on screen details. Rigging is significantly more sophisticated for a movie asset since the movements need to match cinematic material, whereas in games these can be simplified both due to a faster frame rate or length of game.

A key one is geometry. For films, you generally want to actually include details in the geometry of the model. That drastically increases the polycount, but lets you zoom in on details or reflect light very realistically.
For games: You generally want to use normal maps. Details like screws, indents, scratches, peeled of paint, wood texture etc are applied on flat surfaces. From most angles: This looks fine, but for drastic angles: You will be able to notice that it still is just a flat plane. The advantage is a highly reduced poly count, which is key for real-time rendering.

Those renders are not realistic tho? They are complex , but they have simple shaders on which are not realistic and therefore, not movie quality.

Maya maya maya. Can we decouple maya from Hollywood as the ONLY tool for the job please? These days its like using a swiss army knife to slice pizza. There are better tools for modelling that halve the workload. Maya’s modelling tools are unclean, ‘unfun’ and laborious. We’ve moved on already! :)

I hope you dont take offence but to me it sounds more like you are not good with maya. When you get a handle on the markin menus and hotbox then it gets faster. Also autodesk has seriously screwed up the software

    • @DavionSobek

@@hyraxist While I do not dispute that Maya has some pretty damn strong modeling abilities I find that I can get the same work done faster in Blender with less bugs and it crashes far less while still moving tens of millions of polyons (on a GTX 1070). I still find rigging and animation to Maya's strong points but a combination of Blender and Zbrush to be the best for hard-surface and organic modeling. They both better watch out though because I keep seeing greater and greater things coming out of Houdini every release.
P.S. I have about 4 years of 3d modeling in both with a prior 2 in Lightwave 3D and 8 or so in 3DS Max.
