Hoarders ❤️ DeClutter Kids Bedroom Part 1 | Spring Cleaning Motivation

  • Today Tyler gets to start his own video series of Decluttering and Cleaning his room! I let him take the lead on how he wanted to clean up his room. I wanted him to feel empowered of how he what he would DeClutter, Clean and his techniques to do that. Being a recovering hoarder, it’s important to catch any hoarding behaviors now. At his age I started developing hoarding behaviors like wanting to keep the packaging of the toy received. I wanted to keep the artwork of the packaging, the “entire energy” of a brand new toy so I could experience that again and again. I was wiring my mind that all material items brought me guaranteed happiness available at any moment by just picking it up. I don’t want this to develop in my boys so I’m teaching them it’s fun to have an organized clean room where they know where all their favorite possessions are…and that happiness comes in so many forms!!

    Well done, Tyler! Remember to let the container be "the bad guy" as with Tyler's plushies over-flowing the container they are in. Its OK to tell Tyler he can only keep what fits comfortably in a contain and for him to have to learn to make choices because he can't keep everything and have a tidy bedroom. He has SO many toys and studies show kids play better with less and more open ended things they can build and create with. Please try to login the amount of presents they get and declutter some toys before Christmas and birthdays to make room for the new.

      This comment reeks of passive aggressive judgement.
      Forcing him to get rid of things (your suggestion) rather than empowering him to make decisions (her way) will cause him to form attachment disorders to objects and it will perpetuate hoarding, not healing.
      It’s a good idea for you to not give advice on things that you don’t understand.

    A suggestion as to where you can really help your son is in stemming the flow of new things coming in after he’s put in all this hard work to declutter. Akin to your no spend challenge the children could have a no new toys challenge. It also helps birthday and Christmas become more special when they aren’t getting toys all the time and you’ll find they get more selective about what they really would like as presents. Keep up the good work!

    MinimalMom made a good point recently that one of the reasons we struggle to maintain a room after decluttering is because there is too much inventory, and this applies here.

    • @jenniferr-f3157
      @jenniferr-f3157 2 года назад +5

      Yes, and if 150 items are decluttered this year, but 200 are received at Christmas, birthdays and purchased next year, there will be another video on the identical topic next year. Decluttering is important, for sure, but after that, it’s about intake/shopping.

    Such a nice job! Tyler can easily get rid of boxes and trash, I wouldn't worry about him
    It's ok wanting to keep many toys that are on the floor, because they are probably his favourites. The less loved toys might be inside the bins he can't reach as easily
    I learned that on a decluttering video on a kitchen somewhere. They said that it's hard to declutter the surfaces because what ends up there is the stuff we use regularly. But they probably don't have a home because the cabinets are filled with stuff we actually don't use

    • @rebeckamattisson5083

      This is so interesting. It's so easy to focus on surfaces, because we see them and can feel the clutter, but if we declutter the stuff that is hidden, we have places to put our favourite things. I have a hard time putting some things away, because my experiences with my parents big house, where stuff just disappeared into "black holes", because they never purged. As a grown up I help them to declutter now and then, it's ok for them, because they are not hoarders, just not interested in initiate any decluttering...

    • @sinaain
      @sinaain 2 года назад +3

      Interesting though I don’t think it applies to everyone. With my boyfriend a lot of the things on the counters are things he used moths ago and never put them away again (like the medication he needed to use four months ago) or just random things he doesn’t need like something his sister forgot a half year ago and doesnt need or want anymore, old flyers and receipts that are long past their date or an old shoe string he doesn’t know where it came from. Usually when tackling his surface clutter there was enough space in the cabinets to put things back that belonged back and throw things away that have no more use. I think for him it was more that he only remembers putting the things away he uses regularly and has a routine of putting them away after use (like he cleans once a week and after cleaning he puts the cleaning stuff away or he cooks and puts the ingredients away after using them) but things he doesn’t regularly use and then put away immediately just stay out for months, like the medication he once used for 4 days.

    Hi Tyler! Thanks for sharing your room with us! My 5 year old little girl heard me watching the video and came to sit by me and asked if we could watch from the beginning. So you're both teaching her about decluttering and tidying too! She likes her room clean but has a hard time letting go of things because of "memories." She'll keep practicing!! Thanks again!! Now I'm going to show her Brandon's videos!

    Toy Story was so formative for me when I was young. I have a natural tendency to attach emotion to items and those movies made me feel so guilty and unloving toward my toys. I would apologize to them if I didn’t play with them for too long. I think what you are doing with their kids is so great. What a great life lesson to learn!

    I'm not sure where to leave this message. I currently found all of your youtube videos. I want to tell you that you are soooo AMAZING and courageous to share all of you with the world. I like how you are so down to earth and give outsiders such a great interpretation of how you are living with a disorder. I do not feel that you are broken as a human. I feel that your purpose is to share your story with the world. I feel grateful to you for helping me and others understand this disorder. I just think you are amazing and wish the best for you and your family. Trish in Denver

    You know I just know thought about something. I'm 62 and I don't recall ever telling my parents how bad I was bullied in grade school either. I don't remember ever talking about it.
    It was just some thing I dealt with at school as a little kid. Isn't it sad that our kids don't talk to us or at least we didn't. I hope kids these days are more able to talk about this sort of thing because it sure is life-changing when you're bullied all the time.

    I’m so glad to see your boys making such strides!!!! - and *you* - right alongside them.✊😘 I absolutely DO know how hard it can be to watch our kids “cast aside” so much - especially of what *we* have given to them … but we as Mommas/parents need to remember that God put our children in our lives to not only help us learn patience, humility, and sooo many other life lessons and fruits of the Spirit - but to be examples of how *FREE* we can be if we simply practice not holding on to too much (or *letting go* on a regular basis). Oh wow … what a concept, eh? (((((((HUGS))))))) Thank you once again for shedding more light on ‘the’ struggle.
    PS- I am so proud of YOU - and your boys!!!!

    Love Pepper the Declutter Manager. Way to go Tyler ! I see Tyler loves his Cat plushies and has several...keep them all. Maybe some of the smaller plushies can go in a plastic container or in one of the containers under the bed. I love plushies and own several....hard to part with them. If someone has a giant plushie instead of getting rid of it..just oven up the back seam and pull out the cottonpoly stuffing...keeping the skin....Build A Bear has the skins then puts the cottonpoly inside. Unstuffing the larger plushies and keeping the skin works for when you have to move somewhere new.

    I was rewatching a lot of your videos recently and it’s clear that you are more than capable of successfully decluttering a space,cleaning it and making it look lovely however it seems to me that they consistently get recluttered again and apart from continuing to declutter and minimise your belongings I would suggest that you really really need to stem the flow of things coming in and adopt a “ do it now “ policy by that I mean if a mess is made it must be cleaned up straight way by whoever made it ( no excuses ) ..if its trash or tossy tossy it needs to be trashed immediately … if stuff does come in it needs to be dealt with straight away …I only say this because I desperately want you to achieve your dreams and goals for your home but unless you start adopting these habits you will end up going round and round in circles . The thing is ,I know you can do it because look how much you have achieved already ! It’s amazing ..so I know you can get some momentum going with this and get that basement and garage done and maintain a beautiful space .We are all cheering you on every step of the way ❤️❤️❤️
