If you look at the stated measurements of each car, they are virtually identical, especially inside the car. The Camry is a bit smaller on many measurements (for example, Avalon and Accord both list ~40” of rear leg room and ~38” in the Camry). In prior years, Camry vs. Accord was the natural comparison, and overall, probably still is. However, from a size perspective, I think you can compare the Accord and Avalon in their newest iterations.
That’s actually what I just did recently. I was cross shopping the Avalon and the Accord in the Hybrid models and their respective top trims (Touring Hybrid Accord and Limited Hybrid Avalon), mainly for the interior size, and accommodations for two car seats. While looking I did test drive the Camry, just to cover all my bases.
In my opinion from driving and making a decision over about 3-4 weeks, the Avalon’s fit and finish is a step up overall compared to the other two, (for example, the soft touch of the top part of the door carries into the back door on the Avalon, but not in the Accord where the top of the door trim in the back is hard touch plastic). And I would argue that the fit and finish in the Accord is a bit better than Camry. Tech in the Avalon and Accord is above Camry, and I would also argue that the Honda tech beats the Avalon tech (for example, Honda has both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto vs. Avalon only having Apple CarPlay so far, and Camry having neither).
Looks are totally subjective. I’ve read and heard people who love or hate either car. I personally like the looks on both cars just fine. Other subjective points...(1) the Honda seats were more comfortable for me personally. I’m 6’ 2” and felt like I could get better thigh support on the Honda than the Avalon. Though the ventilated seats on the Avalon were more effective than on the Accord. (2) I personally think the center stack on the Accord will “age” better than the Avalon and look less “dated” than the Avalon 5+ years from now. (3) I felt that both hybrid models drove very well, very similarly, and both were quiet rides (though it was impossible to do an exact comparison since I wasn’t able to drive them on the same roads back to back).
Ultimately, both are nice cars, both have their pros and cons, and I was torn between them, which is why it took me nearly a month to make a final decision. At the end of the day, while I feel that the Avalon is the overall “nicer” car in many ways (mostly interior fit and finish) my wife and i didn’t feel it was roughly $8,500ish nicer for us and our situation (this difference was the difference in total payments based on the deals I worked with local dealers over a 5 year loan term at the same interest rate).
I used to be a solid Honda guy..had a Civic, a TSX and then an Accord V6 but I've had a GS 350 F-Sport now for a year so I'm kinda starting to really like Toyota products! The new Avalon and Camry XSE V6 both look bloody fantastic. The new Accord is just too weird looking for me and they threw away the V6 while Toyota kept it in both the Avalon and Camry!
Same here had a 16 V6 Accord. Looked forward to upgrading to a 2018 but when I saw it I threw up. It's ugly AF and no matter what Honda dealerships do with it as far as add on accessories it's still ugly to look at. Accords are officially hideous.
PLATINUM It's sad because the facelifted 2016 accord was probably the best looking Accord EVER. Even now I stare at any Touring or Sport model. The new one has some nice angles esp with good wheels and colours but it tries too hard. They should have kept the exterior design the same or slightly updated it and put in the new interior and kept the V6. There is a reason the new Accord is going down in sales while the Camry is going up. The new Camry XSE V6 with the black and white combo is mind blowing esp at night

Sid Ghosh yeah those fake vents really look good on the rear bumper. Because every car needs bumper vents. Camry sales actually tanked at the end of the year and Accord sales went up. Drive a Camry V6 and then an Accord 2.0T Touring. You'll never get in a Toyota again. Toyota sells to rental car companies so resale sucks and that's why they "sell more" than Honda.
Dave, I don't think these cars compete, the Camry would be the competitor to the Accord.

I agree. But I've a feeling down the road - they will eventually match up in comparison. If Honda decides to go this route.

Im surprised he wouldnt know this already, the Avalon competes with the Maxima, Impala and other full size sedans. The accord is Midsize.
Ladies and gentlemen the Avalon isn’t full sized anymore. The EPA classifies the Avalon as a mid-sized sedan. The Avalon has not been a full sized since the 2013 redesign. These new Avalon are actually smaller than 2005-2011 Avalons. The Avalon and Accord absolutely compete. Since Honda doesn’t have an Avalon equivalent they always go all out on the Accord. Hence why the Accord is superior to the Camry and always will be. However it’s a close call between the Avalon and the Accord. Go type in car compare in google and compare the size and interior dimensions on the new Accord and Avalon and they are almost identical. And for the People complaining about the grille then look at the Avalon limited 2019 has a different design than the touring.
If I had to choose, the Avalon would be my first choice. Nothing against accord but avalon !!!

*Thoughts on 2018 Honda Accord (Design):*
Let me start off by saying that there are several elements where I think the designers did a pretty good job at. First and foremost, the interior design looks nice as a simple yet pretty functional layout. A little bland on minor occasions, but still nice as it is. Additionally, I can't deny that the work they've done with most of the materials and fit-and-finish is quite rewarding. Coming out with simple creative ideas that all-in-all gives it a modern vibe to it.
..but then, there comes the new Accord's elephant in the room.... the exterior proportions, and the whole exterior design....
...ohhh my-..... ahh god, my.... dude... I-... I think JonTron said it best here:

My lord, where the hell do I even begin with this? Well, I guess I can start off with the exterior design, as the whole exterior looks like it was entirely done by a brain-damaged chimpanzee!
In any other exterior vehicle design, an actual vehicle designer who has the credibility to do his job, would create something that looks pretty realistic, yet also artistic at the same time. Making something that looks believable, well-proportioned, elegant, but also something that belongs in its own world, without looking too plain-jane, which was in fact something where the previous-generation Accord already did so well at. Several sedans I can think of right now with a fastback design like the all-new Toyota Avalon (as of course shown here, side note) and Volkswagen Arteon accomplished that really well.
THIS however, looks like something they want to make in order to get fired from their job! I can assure you that NO professional designer would ever look at this, and think that this is even in the slightest bit acceptable! Let alone for a sedan with a fastback bodystyle! Even you, the person who is listening to this right now, can create a design that looks much more professional than this mess!
And if the exterior design wasn't enough, its exterior proportions are the ultimate piles of salt to an open wound. It tries WAY TOO hard to look so sleek, so dynamic, so elegant, so edgy, and so dramatic, and so tasteful, just to get the audience's reactions that it crosses the line, and it's not at all funny anymore! It's, simply put, just sad, desperate, disgusting, and it's only appealing to those in the lowest common denominator. You can tell when a design looks so horrific, that you have to not even give it a tiny glimpse or peek in order to look at it.
Seriously, this is something I expect to see from Pontiac as a sedan version to the Aztek! Not a large and rich automotive industry like Honda! EVEN Toyota with the latest Prius, and Nissan with the latest Maxima, both did a better job than this!
Like I said, there are a few good things about the new Accord's design, such as the interior... but what they did to the exterior is why I think the designers should seriously consider an immediate career change.

They are not on the same level. The accord and Camry are direct competitors. I like the accord way better though.
I've long wanted to buy an Avalon. But I can't get past that front end. It looks unfinished and huge. I hear Dyson wants to get into the car business. They'd better watch out because the Avalon looks like it wants to get into the vacuum business. That front end looks like a huge scoop. I think the Avalon could make a great vacuum for parking lots.

The grille is pretty big, but it looks sleek, well sculpted, and works very nicely with the overall (already stylish) design, while looking more aggressive in a fashionable demeanour, rather than plain-jane vanilla of the prior Avalons. Let alone the fact that it still maintains the classy personality the Avalon was always known for having.
The Accord on the other hand, seems like the opposite in my book.
The Avalon's front end reminds me of a large mouth bass I caught last year. NOT very pretty.

Accord and Camry are competitors. Honda doesn't make anything to compete with Avalon. I guess Spokane is still full of Fords, Chevys, and Dodge vehicles only.

Honestly as you know already know, all manufacturers keep growing their vehicles and it all makes sense cause consumers want that but in some ways it don't... w.e sells.
I’m very confused because all other indications are this is a full-size sedan whereas when I was in San Diego they said it was a midsize so I’m getting mixed messages.
I guess the best way to describe it is Chevy Malibu compared to Chevy Impala. Every refresh or all-new Malibu keeps getting bigger. Mid-size starts to get the same as Full-size.

The Accord on the other hand, seems like the opposite in my book. It's front looks blocky, the chrome strip looks thick, and below it looks like something came off. If they were about to place the Honda Sensing camera on the front, they could've placed it behind the Honda emblem. And overall, it looks a bit dated, and I don't think it works with the overall car. I didn't knew how they even went from the CR-V's nice looking front that actually works regardless, to this honestly...

The honda accord is a way better car. The front of Toyota Avalon looks like a giant smile. And no Android auto on the Toyota. No thanks. Better your mistake then mine. And by the way the Toyota is a full size car and the honda is a mid size.
