Thank you for sharing your story. So many of us deal with women’s health issues (myself included) but don’t talk about it. We need to share our experiences so others will know they are not alone and there are options and support out there. Thinking of you and sending lots of love and hugs. xoxoxo

Just one suggestion for anyone after surgery....gas may travel up to your shoulders and it can be painful. Use a heating pad and cover your shoulders and it should help dissipate the pain . At least it did for me.💙

Hi Lisa. I had an abdominal hysterectomy on 1/20/21. Everything went smoothly. I was in the hospital for 2 days. The first night at home I was little uncomfortable, but no pain. I never took any pain pills. Just take it easy and Follow all of the doctors instructions. I have you in my prayers. Everything will be fine.

Make sure when you talk to the anesthesiologist before the surgery.. That you ask about putting something in for nausea before you wake up. I always would be nauseous until I was told they can add to your IV... It helped tremendously!

Best wishes for a quick and easy recovery! I had a hysterectomy at 34 and it was the best day of my life! My surgeon was able to save part of one ovary and took everything else along with the endometriosis and scar tissue. I came home the same day and never needed any pain meds. I did have a hormone patch for a few months to give my partial ovary a chance to work and it took several weeks for my hemoglobin to return to normal. I was back at work in 2 weeks. 22 years later it was still the best day and decision of my life! Best wishes, good luck and hugs to you!

Thank you for sharing all of this plus your recovery. I will be having the same procedure in 6 weeks. I was diagnosed with adenomyosis. I’m in pain and bleeding heavy every 3 weeks. I’m also an RN. I can’t take these symptoms anymore. Your videos are very helpful in what to expect.

My sister had hers taken out and she’s never been happier. She’s had issues her whole life. The procedure wasn’t too bad - she said it was still easier than giving birth. I think you’ll do great! Best wishes for a smooth recovery!
Edit: my sister also had total hysterectomy laparoscopically, outpatient. The belly band is a good idea because she said on the ride home she felt like she was sloshing around in all that space 😂 she feels so free now - free from pain, threw away all her feminine products - life changing! It sounds like it will be a freeing and life changing surgery for you too! So glad it’s finally happening!

I know you're goofy like me, so you will laugh and I'm pretty sure the same thoughts went through your mind too! But seriously, Lisa, a video series like this will be SO helpful for so many women! Best of luck to you , Lisa! Regarding the drink…when I had abdominal surgery last year (ovary removal), I remember I had similar pre-op beverage instructions - although in my case, they told me to buy a 12oz bottle of gatorade rather than providing me with a special drink. It was explained to me that the latest research has shown that patients who are well hydrated & get electrolytes before surgery have better recovery outcomes. It has to be consumed two hours prior and all at once to ensure that it’s out of your stomach by the time you’re put under anesthesia.

Hey Lisa! Sharing your story and journey with us is so powerful and will help so many people. I've been praying for menopause for many years as my OBGYNs have been reluctant to do the hysterectomy on me due to my age. With me, it would be a radical as I have the whole gamut of issues...PCOS, fibroids, and endometriosis. I could have probably pushed but at this point, I've decided to wait it out.
I believe that the hardest part of this surgery for you will be resting and not doing too much after surgery. Like so many others have said, I think you are going to feel fantastic and finally free of the pain. Please listen to your body and even if it feels good, make sure you are giving yourself plenty of time to heal.
Thank you for sharing this journey with all of us! My thoughts and prayers are with both you and Shawn. You got this!! 💕

I had a kidney removed almost 2 years ago and they made 5 small and one large incisions in my abdomen.I was just like you and researched my butt off to have any everything I needed afterwards.I looked at nephractomy and c- section and hysterectomy videos since all go through the abdomen.Your friend's care package has most of the essentials! I had crosswords also. The biggest thing is the belly binder and large loose undies that do not touch the incisions.Practice deep beathing for your lungs.I could not lift a gallon of milk or heavier.I went home the next day and started feeling better within the week. The biggest thing will be to avoid a hernia and walk around as much as you can.You will be surprised how much easier it is than you think..I overplanned but it kept my mind busy and gave me some control. We are all praying for you.You got this!

Lisa, I wish you all the best with your up coming surgery. I had a radical hysterectomy in March and girl let me tell you, you are going to love not having your period any more!!! The items in your recovery basket look like you have all the bases covered. The gas pain was by far the worst part of my recovery. My surgery was not lapa and TENA underwear (although not pretty) were a game changer for me! Listen to your body and don't over do it!!!

Thank you for sharing. I definitely think it’s a huge benefit to everyone when we’re open about any of these topics that have been less talked about. I’ve always had bad periods and they got quite a bit better after the birth of my second child. But now that it’s been a few years since her birth, they’ve been getting worse and worse again. To the point where I know I need to seriously discuss it with my gyn at my next appointment. I’m totally done having kids so I understand the feeling of being like “I don’t need this anymore, I’d be fine if we just got rid of it!” (Not to make light of surgery by any means.)
I wish you a safe, easy surgery and recovery and look forward to the rest of the series.

SO sending you positive vibes, and healing light, and will continue to do so, until no longer necessary. Your are such a positive influence, and I heartily applaud your openness in your journey, and wish to help other by posting this series. Bravo!! Also sending huge, supportive, socially distanced hugs from here in New Jersey!
I think I told you - I used to spend a LOT of time on chronic pain forums before I had my cervical spine surgery years ago, and it is DEFINITELY a helpful skill to be able to step back, or away, from experiences that start to scare more than help you, or turn toxic, etc. And VERY much also agree that others post when things do NOT go well, but not when they DO - and that's usually with MOST things - even Yelp and Google reviews. So actually try to push myself to remember to post positive reviews on Amazon, etc. But - like you said - I also did fond lots of support, info, tips on recovery (I also bought stuff to "prepare"). I think - just like with anything "internet", you have to learn to separate the "wheat from the chaff". One of the huge things I bought, STILL have, and STILL use - was a "grabber", so I cracked up when I saw yours. I actually have TWO of them now, and they are INDISPENSABLE to me, as i have mobility issues!
I also think I previously shared I had a MISERABLE stretch of years dealing with peri-menopause - HEAVY bleeding, CONSTANT bleeding (bled for like 3 months straight one time!), and clotting being the worst, with cramping also. Never got diagnosed with endometriosis, even after endometrial biopsy, but was told mine was all due to hormone imbalance, which various courses of different hormones either did nothing, or only helped short-term. Was YEARS worth of tests, hormones, pain, bleeding, D&C's, etc. - a real nightmare. My GYN was talking hysterectomy, which I didn't want because I live alone, and have no support system for recovery. Long story short - I was close enough to hopefully natural menopause that by the time the positive effects of a uterine ablation wore off, it was hoped I'd be in menopause which thank goodness, apparently DID happen. Had the ablation when I was 53, and am 61 now, and no problems, so VERY thankful!! But - like you so wisely said - everyone is different, and so is their experience, and journey. I wish you nothing but the best on yours!

I wish you all the best for a quick and easy, problem free operation and an even quicker healing period. Sending 🤗 x

I know the pain and how you get tired of feeling it all the time. One month ago I had a surgury because I wanted to know if I have Endometriosis (my mother has it too) and they found out I have it and removed it, but there is the chance that it might come back. TMI WARNING.....I have had major problems with my periods for years. For me it isn't really painful but I bleed for 3 weeks on, 1 week off and it's very heavy. I was given all the options you were and I was/am not ready for the hysterectomy route. I decided on an IUD and it has improved drastically, it's not perfect but it's more manageable. I'm sorry you are going through this but I'm glad you have made the right decision for you and for having the courage to share your story. I will be sending you and Shawn all the good vibes for the surgery and the recovery.

I had a radical hysterectomy 4 years ago. It was the least painful and easiest recovery from any surgery I have had. You might want to look into Adenomyosis.
It sounds like it’s possible that could be part of your issue too. It’s easiest for them to diagnose after they remove your uterus. I am sure you have seen how hotly debated how to treat endometriosis is. I also had to stop frequenting online groups. It was frustrating when info conflicted and sad to see people struggling. I bet you that this recovery will be less painful than your reduction. Thanks for being visibility to this.

In case anyone is watching this and wanting more input. So , just got back from my check-up post surgery. All went well during surgery (had everything removed) and I am healing on-time. One note, in my case they decided to do a pelvic exam this time (I thought they'd wait until week 6) and they ended up using a bit of silver nitrate to seal one small area near the cuff. I am sharing so you can be prepared! It was painful. So, if. you THINK you will need an internal exam and any amt of silver nitrate I highly suggest taking tylenol/advil or even like 1/2 a pain med to get you through it. It wasn't horrible but it also wasnt' FUN. If you have a lower pain tolerance I suggest this even more...JUST one experience...that I haven't seen discussed too much on YT..

It’s awesome that you are sharing your story. I wasn’t given the option. I had two choices, endometrial ablation or IUD. I chose IUD and honestly, it worked. I haven’t had a period in over 8 years. My symptoms weren’t as bad but I’m thankful to not have a period.

Lisa, I'm a mom of 2, grandmother to 4 and decided to have a total hysterectomy as opposed to just a hysterectomy at age 50. I had 2 friends die from ovarian cancer that was detected too late and I wanted to avoid that possibility. I didn't do hormone replacement therapy and was just fine. My advice to you is to rest afterwards. Rest and rest some more.

Hello Lisa this is Diane Thomas I went through a hysterectomy and I didn't have support at home but the worst thing you can do is lift anything so I know Shawn is very good with you so you won't have any problems. My thoughts and prayers are with you. I wanted to tell you that it's the best thing I've ever done in my life. Sincerely Diane Thomas

Yes. Listen to your surgeon. Just because you think you can doesn’t mean you can. Take it easy. Don’t lift!!! Also, my piece of advice is, practice getting up from laying down by rolling onto your side and then using your arm up to push yourself up. The reason is to try and avoid activating your abdominal muscles soon after your surgery and while you’re healing. 🙂best of luck.

Lisa, I have Factor V Leiden and also MTHFR (another genetic blood clotting disorder). I had a benign tumor removed from my left ankle joint in August 2016. It was very painful to walk. My mom is a retired nurse, so we made an appointment with a hematologist and he prescribed me Xarelto to take for a week or two after surgery, since I would be stationary. I did need lab results before I could make the appointment to see him. If you don’t have time to do that, taking a baby aspirin after your surgery for a week or 2 might be worth doing. Ask your dr what they think.

I was given the soap for 3 showers prior to surgery, and was told to drink a Gatorade prior to my surgery. I didn’t do a belly binder. I wanted nothing to touch my abdomen. I did invest in new nightgowns and pj sets. Also make certain you have a laxative medicine at home to keep things moving when on painkillers. I took a book and magazine to the hospital, but I slept so much I didn’t read. Week 4 was rough for me because I was really uncomfortable sitting. We’ve messaged before so if you have questions contact me.

Thank you for sharing your story. I have breast cancer that is driven by hormones.. I needed to at least get my ovaries removed; however, my OBGYN stated in my case/cancer, it’s best to have a hysterectomy. It was an easy decision for me, since I do not want to deal with cancer anymore. 💗💓

I had an ablation done, worst mistake I made. Now I’m getting a hysterectomy two years later because my lining got so thick and I’m in terrible pain every day. Thank You for sharing your experience! 💕

I had one also. I have regrets too. My cramps last a full week or longer with 4 days of fairly painful ones. My lining is thick also.

I had a uterine ablation 12 years ago before considering a hysterectomy. The ablation worked for me and I feel really fortunate. Never another period again and no more pain. Hubs says I still get PMS 😂🤣 The hysterectomy will change your quality of life for the better. I’m excited for you!!!! Speedy recovery wishes 🥰

Good luck Lisa! My friend had an ablation and it did nothing. I've been hoping for menopause since my period started.. it's been 40 tears. I have horrible cramps. I'm sick of it and the end is nowhere in sight even tho I'm 52! I've never wanted to use my uterus. I wish I could just scrape it out with a spoon. LOL What we all really want to know is if you're taking a warmer or a GO with you to the hospital. LOL

I feel this same exact way! My periods are super painful and then the times I'm not on my period I'm still in pain but obviously bearable but annoying. I had my tubes tied after my 4th baby and ever since my periods came back after nursing him for just over a year my periods are super heavy, irregular, and out of whack, lasting anywhere from 3 to 13 days and coming twice a month. I have always had painful periods but these are just different from anything I have ever experienced before. I have done an ultrasound, blood work, pelvic exam. My uterus has lots of inflammation and they don't know why, but my blood flow within my tubes and ovaries is normal, I don't have endodemetriosis as far as they can see on ultrasound. My dr said essential my uterus is just angry since my tubal ligation. I tried a birth control pill and it gave me horrible side effects, I opted out of iud because I had the copper iud between baby 3 and 4 and I had horrible pain constantly and my body rejected it within the first 2 months. They offered pain meds and I said absolutely not I do not want to take pain pills the rest of my life so that's when my dr said let's do a partial hysto, your tubes are tied so obviously you are done having kids let's just do the surgery and I agreed. I had my tubes tied because my body just couldn't handle growing another life, my 4th baby was very small and was slow growing so was taken early and all my kids are about 21 months apart so my body just couldn't keep up I guess.

I have Endometriosis and understand this. I used to get cysts and they ruptured also
I always have breakthrough bleeding on birth control and also cramping daily..it's really awful, but not as bad as it used to be before I had children.

I had the uterine ablation and it worked for me, then I went through menopause so no more problems. So happy to see you are so prepared! I know Shawn will take great care of you. Prayers will be sent anyway. And I totally 2nd what u said about FB groups. When I went through breast cancer a couple years ago, wow! I too had to leave those groups. I was sad I couldn’t be there for others, but it increased my anxiety so bad….

Also, thank you for speaking on this. And I am so much better for having a total hysterectomy. I did have to go back in and have my right ovary remove several years ago because of cysts, but it wasn’t nearly as bad as being on hormones for life

I agree with your thoughts on endometrial ablation. I had one done last year. It helped the excessive bleeding and blood clots but I still get my period with heavy days. I went in a second time to see if it would help but my surgeon said there was too much scar tissue ugh I feel like since the ablation my cramps are way worse now and longer. I wish I would have done more research. I'm on a waitlist for total hysterectomy leaving my ovaries. I'm beyond nervous. Major anxiety.
