  • Okay so much is happening in this video, I just want to say now that I am so distracted by whatever is happening with this woman with a hand puppet. ANYWAY, Devin was great, so much dynamic range and his slide from one part of his voice to another is really cool to listen to. I would love to hear some more from him so let me know in the comments what you want to hear next.

    The hand puppet was Ziltoid the Omniscient - the title of one of his albums. The original puppet creation had the remains of Devin's own "snot encrusted" dreds. Look up "Devin Townsend skullet" to see Devin's own combination of balding and long hair.

    I agree with the others that his EMGtv performance of Kingdom is amazing. I think that you calling yourself a theatre kid might mean that you like his performance of Why from his quarantine fundraiser even more. Both performances are solo with recorded music and voices behind him. Both of them are must see performances if you liked Deadhead. Here's a link to Why - ruclips.net/video/xsd4ZkFVOHY/видео.html

    Welcome to a whole new world with Devin. As a huge fan, there's over 30 albums intertwined with genre bending music. In other words, you might not like everything. But there's a ton of gold that grabs you. As he matured his voice only got better, and every performance more epic than the last. He's the one of the only artists that always takes it up a notch live. As an old dude living in constant severe pain - I discovered Devin and his music and spoken words are one of the biggest blessings in my life. And I find that incredible Cheers

  • @madjock-hy7th
    @madjock-hy7th 2 года назад +4

    A couple of things, firstly Devin was ill for this show. He still played over 2 hours and this was at the end of the set!
    Devin as a performer changes styles constantly, his albums are often a surprise to fans when they are released. He is a massive fan of musicals and musical theatre (he does "Bring Him Home" from Les Mis at times, there us video of him doing it in one of his Quarantine shows) which he happily includes in his music. Some of his stuff is heavy and brutal (anything by Strapping Young Lad an earlier band of his will scare the crap out of you 😀) yet can do also have mellow at times country meets ambient in his canon (check out Casualties Of Cool).
    The puppet isn't trolling, loads of folks had them as they were on sale at both this and his "Retinal Circus" shows in London (and probably elsewhere). The puppet is a Ziltoid puppet which is a character that he has 2 albums about, the first telling how he arrives on earth, asks for the universe's best cup of coffee and is disappointed when it is "tepid" so he decides to destroy our planet,... honest that is the story 😂. Ziltoid often makes appearances on screen at some gigs and occasionally in person!
    I recommend that you check out for your OWN entertainment (bugger us lot watching your reactions😀) the video for The Retinal Circus, a one off gig that was music and circus with dancers, choirs, trapeze artists, contortionists, aliens, aliens giving birth through 7 foot vaginas (can I say that on your page???) etc. It is an aural and visual treat as well as bloody hilarious at times. As a person who loves theatre I believe you would thoroughly enjoy the show!
    Cheers, have a good day.

    The Royal Albert Hall is a magical venue. I have been to SO many concerts there, from solo organ recitals to huge orchestral symphonic concerts as part of the BBC Proms festival that runs for six weeks throughout the summer... the acoustic is challenging, to say the least, but the atmosphere and sense of community is unlike any other venue on the planet. The number of times I've heard that place go electric... either with a wave of excitement, or when it goes so eerily silent that you can hear a pin drop... Just don't be one of six thousand odd people up in the top gallery on a hot summer evening, because you WILL pass out!

      @@CharisSellick Yes'm, and he's done that before, just kinda powered through the show when he's not feeling well. He was getting over a cold at the show I went to just before COVID cancelled the rest of his tour, and he still rocked it (though some songs he switched out because he'd "sound like Marge Simpson" in his words).

    You should check out some older Nightwish. Like anything from their first album "Oceanborn", or their song "Bless the Child". Also, Metallica has a very famous album where they play live with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. (S&M) So obviously, it's pretty theatrical. lol I think you'd like it! Take care!

    I think there is a lot of modern prog metal bands that you'd appreciate Charis! In some similar veins to this or some of the Spiritbox stuff you've heard. For the vocal side of things I'd definitely recommend the group "Tesseract". They've had 2 different vocalists but both incredibly talented (as are the band as whole ofc) & their music is very emotive & sort of a journey when it comes to sections/structure. You can't go too wrong with song choice, but you may want to check out tracks with the different vocalists for 2 different types of performances or perspectives. 😁🤘👍

    I can hear the guitar riffs but the ringing in my ear is distorting the vocals. I'll have to listen to the studio version.
