You just made a lightbulb go off in my head when you played the d and e octaves. I didn't realize you could play octaves back to back like you did. Thank you for the inspiration
If you grew up when i did in the 70's and played bass you HAD to know these songs. All bass players out there you must know the masters of your instrument. Larry graham, Louis Johnson, Bootsy, Slave, Brick, Pleasure, War...Learn from these artist. Funk is how you learn this instrument. SORRY GUYS BUT JUST LIKE IN RAP MUSIC...OLD SCHOOL RULES. GREAT LESSON BROTHER.
I am a middle-aged guy (if life expectancy is about 110 years give or take) and these choices hit my formative years of when I heard bass and wanted to get my hands on a bass. Every song was right on the money and when you introduced "Slide" I couldn't believe it. I love to jam with people on that song. My taste in music is broad but this type of style is within the bullseye of what I think an electric bass can do to a song to make it truly great. I can tell that you are an experienced teacher. Great job!!
Now my twins (10yrs old I have 4 others who are older than 26 don't ask LOL)are watching you. Know that your vids capture the young folks also. great stuff.
Great slap groves from back in the day, Larry Graham inspired me to play bass.I was clueless at 17 but picked up a old 1969 Fender Precision bass with huge upside down ashtrays on it , it was very pretty but played great. Thanks ,,,
Thanx for your lesson, I really appreciate your approach. Not so much fancy technique but down to the bottom of everything. It is all about groove and a groove does need at least one note and that´s it for the beginning, I like!
I actually think George Johnson plays the bass part on Get The Funk OutMa Face...when I saw them with Quincy ( ages ago ), they switched instruments for that song and every time I saw them it was that way
Thanks. The fundamentals and source are the best places to start. EXCELLENT commentary. I am inspired to practice more and not get so caught up in "technique" and "text book stuff" Definitely what I needed to hear.
Thanks so much for this thoughtful presentation. I have been intimidated by this technique, because it is so challenging to get a clean sound and play with authority. You are absolutely right! Sometimes you just have to just keep trying until you find that ah ha! moment.
dude ... you rock. I am adding some of these tips and insights tomy practice routine and I am definitely gonna visit "The Source". Thank you for doing this video.
+ernest morris I have a place of my own now in Castro Valley California but at the time I shot this video I was teaching at Guitar center Studios in Emeryville
Hi Ted, thanks for giving me some direction to look at relative slap style. I play finger style 99.9% of the time and the 0.1 I try to avoid because it just escapes me. Got some perspective from you. Thanks!!!
Great lesson man. One thing that might help a beginner is to play it on a 4 string bass not a 5 string, just to cut down on the confusion of what string your playing on.
Definitely dig dat shit. Struggling with slap but you have hit on something there I can't quite describe. Lightbulb moment. Pissed off that my bass is 200 miles away. Hope I can hold onto whatever it is it till Saturday. Thanks man.
@@TedTalksBass No one is ever in Chicago. Lol I would have signed up for one on one instruction. Lol I play piano, but I've always loved the bass & I want to actually learn how to play. You make the Prince bass lines seem so easy.
you should definately mention Mark King as one of the biggest slap bass players. His technicues is hard to figure out, but as soon you manage to use the left hand to slap down hard on the fingerboard then People can start with the legendary riff Love Games. Look up at Cambridge bass lines he show how to play the Mark King style. Mark, Marcus, Larry are my fav bassplayers since i was just 14 years old now im 42, but still personally Mark King have to coolest bass riffs and the way he plays the bass.
Hey Maurice, that's called a "Fret Wrap" by a company called Gruv Gear out of Southern Cali. It acts as a string dampening device much like the "scrunchies" bass players used to tie around the necks of their basses. Check em out at www.gruvgear.com
MAN! Eye WISH eye could play MUSIC with U! U play ALL my FAVORITE ARTISTS and MUSIC! Thank u 4 the lessons and 4 TELLING THE TRUTH about LEARNING FROM THE RECORDS....
just got a Fender Jazz for Christmas. i'm slowly learning notes. i guess the hardest thing for me is to figure out is which fingers to use to get to the right fret notes. does it really matter what specific fingers you use or is it all about your left hand comfort-zone? any stretching exercises you suggest?
When i sit back and think about it, slowly it does. I'm visualizing and i can see what you are talking about. Practice Practice Practice, and patience like you said. . Thank you for the response.

Hey brother, you're a phenomenal teacher. There's a lot of great bass players, but not everyone has the ability to teach. Amazing!!

Ive been doing the double thumb technique for a year or so but those last two songs are really helping tighten it up for me. Great tutorial.

+Stefan Diedrich hey right on brother!! Thank you

Thanks for your time. Some people don't realise how much effort goes into making a video like this

yeah, Larry is without a doubt the godfather of it all.

Loved it! True Funk!!!
The finger placement and action are what get's me often.

Thanks man. You are a Blessing!
Talking Heads "Psycho Killer" has a very similar intro intro to that first number!
Awesome advice!
Good stuff. Thank you!
Excellent!!
Just got my new bass
Now I came to *SLAP* this bass
cameo 's bass player Aaren Mills made a little more funky on the remake of Slide.

Your the best love your lessons !!
That's a cool accident man with the double up.
Great video bro, still, there is plenty of slap in "Slide" during the solos and fade to coda.
nice feel
Dude you make a great teacher ! :-)
Thanks Ernest! forgive me for replying so late!!!!
That's very true, it's almost impossible to get it exactly like Larry man.
re: 18:00 - always harder to play that stuff slower, no?

I was wondering what is the black strap wrapped around the neck, and what is it used for?

Randy Johnson sure, it matters but is also relative to what you're playing at the time. Does that make sense?

+Randy Johnson RANDY forgive me for late reply did i respond to this before? I can't remember forgive me dude
Wile listning another tune came up called 'Psychokiller' Listen to it
oh yeah, Talking heads, great tune
Yeah but the point I was trying to make is that the bass line was stolen from Sly Stone!
Raphael Helstone which sly stone song?
The man is telling you Dance to the music
Raphael Helstone that is a stylistic similarity, Not a "bite". Countless songs have steady eighth or quarter note pulse grooves.
What bass are you using in this video
Tommy Stewart mike lull m5v
What brand bass is that?
Mike lull m5v
educate! thanks!
How Low are you set on your String height
Pretty low on that bass
That's that hang on the grove, with a filler or ghost note.
NICE BRAH!
LOL @" ENUS...... KEEP IT CLEAN!"
