The Xiaomi SU7 is easily the most hyped car of 2024 (and maybe ever). We borrowed one to find out if there's any substance behind the hype.

You look like John Davies of Motor Week when you appear behind the car 😅
Sure, you have to call Xiaomi like Shaomi, but shame on you for making fun of people not properly pronouncing Xiaomi when you are so, so off when pronouncing Ferrari. Initially I didn't recognise the brand and I had to go back and listen again.
XiaoMi the word means "small rice" aka millet, the food of the poor & also fed to animals --- this is NOT about $2000 USD iPhone but affordable FOR THE PEOPLE. The company is all about values!
Let me guess, is it overcapacity, national security, or human rights this time? 😂
The American government is only for free trade when they are on top.
They love free market except if it does not work in ther favour

Cheaper than a model 3, faster than a Porsche Taycan, more advanced than iOS, yeah that explains the 100% tariff lol.
With tons of suspension problems and crashes due to poor welding and brake failure
@@sarkplex how about use a tiny bit of critical thinking when you watch channels like china observer, they do everything including twisting the facts to spread anti ccp propaganda - even to me this has nothing to with xiaomi, but that makes China looks bad so they are gonna do it anyway. The crash was not because of brake failure, it was because the driver ignored the system warning and worn out the front brake pads.
@@sarkplex In fact, racing brakes are completely different. In fact, you will soon be able to buy a dedicated traffic jam braking system from Xiaomi.
eh depends on the Taycan model

from a brand that had been making knock off it's whole life? you can keep the saving but I know which one I want to put my family and kids in.
As a Chinese, I can tell you that when XIAO SU7 hit the market, my barber told me he wanted to buy it, my wife knew this. Basically everyone knows Xiaomi SU7 in China, which is something traditional car makers could never compete with.
Even I want it
It's better to vary things we buy. Monopoly is bad, healthy competition is good
Never saw one in Shenzhen tho 🥺
But as a Chinese you know how bad reviews it got also. Paint falling off, linkage arms as this as noddles that broke, i read 20% of the cars already have insurance claim on them

so envious. Good for you :)
As a Computational Fluid Dynamics engineer, I will tell you no matter where designers & engineers work, when you plug in the same factors & criteria, you get the same design out of softwares - its math and engineering, nothing to do with "copy cat".
Well, up to a certain extent, when you compare the EQE design, which resembles a piece of soap, with the SU7, then I prefer the SU7!
It is everything to do with copycat design. There are several different cars on the market with marginally or barely any difference of coefficient of drag, and they all look very different visually. I don't know if it's a Chinese design culture thing, but if I had a car company who were producing copycat designs I'd fire the designers. They are ripping off existing designs to save money.
All designs will ultimately converge to a single outcome due to the optimization via analytical/computational modelings (FEA/CFD) substantiated by prototype testing.
@@savedfaves Case in point Mercedes-Benz EQXX , Light Year One,Zero .
You can't make that case for the silhouette of the car, but not for why the headlights are stolen from a McLaren.
Having just returned from China for a few weeks of vacation I was shocked by the quality of the cars in a very positive way. Especially in interior design, so clean but futuristic. I always thought I knew my cars but felt embarrassed walking into car shops in malls and seeing some amazing cars and not knowing the manufacturers!
It's sad that many naive westerners will automatically dismiss cars from the Chinese market based on stupid false stereotypes.
If cars from China are actually as bad as the stereotypes say, the US wouldn't be panic slapping a 100% tariff on them just to keep them out of the American market.
I was in Shenzhen last summer and saw my first BYD Seal in person. I acted like a little boy in a candy shop, it's even better looking IRL. I don't think many westerners have any idea just how far ahead China is in EVs and the remarkable variety available. And I agree, it's so aggravating to see people who have never been to China nor know anything about their EV makers making blatantly false comments about them.
My prediction is that this is just the beginning and China is starting to pull away from the rest of the world. Egger, the BYD chief designer, mentioned that BYD can go from concept to production in 2 years vs. 5 years for western companies. The gap is going to continue to grow and in 10 years, western auto companies will either be effectively dead or will have completely reinvented themselves.
AUDI execs have been shocked! and horrified! by the quality of Chinese cars. German arrogance has sabotaged the VW Group...
It's not the stereotypes about Chinese manufacturing or build quality we're worried about, it's how your government's constant human rights violations to its own citizens, recent genocides, and botched biological weapons that make Americans hesitant in buying something they are trusting their lives to, on top of the concern your government is going to drain their bank accounts while spying on us. We know you're spying on us, it's just to what extent that stolen information gets used.
@@rebym Well it's kind of a silly comparison when copyrights mean nothing and you can just steal everybody else's homework, right? Everybody else is playing by the rules except China, so it's not exactly a fair comparison.
Attachable and detachable controls for the car this is off the chain this is off the scale this is unbelievable
I love watching your videos from here in France. The quality, inventiveness and marketability of all the Chinese vehicles you present is a measure of the denial that automotive journalists and the entire industry in Europe are in. This one is the synthesis. It's going to hurt, and soon!
Tu n’as même pas idée . J’étais à Dubaï ce mois ci où j’ai pu voir geely, et 3-4 autres marques. Ce qu’ils vendent pour 20-30k€ est juste inimaginable .

US: if i don't allow it to import, you shouldn't
@@ida529200 That is actually right on the nose. US FMVSS safety standards differ (not necessarily better or worse, just different) from the NCAP safety standards the rest of the world uses. And what is the one country whose CMVSS safety standards essentially mirror the US standards? Canada of course. The upshot to this is that only cars designed to sell in the US market will end up selling in Canada. No car company is going to all the expense of making their car meet these regulation just to sell in Canada alone. Mexico is a whole different story, since they use NCAP standards so a car designed to sell in China or Europe can be modified to meet Mexican standards fairly easily. But now that the US have quadrupled its tariffs on Chinese cars all the way to 100%, Xiaomi or any other Chinese EV maker will be steering clear of the US market, and by extension, the Canadian market as well.
@@tren133 Wow, that's a smart way to protect your own market.

Local goods are never similarly priced when exported. Expect 10 thousand euros more for Europe, when sold there.

Taycan is a car for car enthusiasts who want more important things from their cars than a lot of useless junk in the infotainment...you know...like high quality chassis, great handling, great comfort, refinement, etc. Things this car can't even come close to compared to the Porsche.

@@derbigpr500 Is that why the residual value of the Tayan dropped to an all time low in 2023? So low that even Porsche dealers are no longer interested in buying back one or two year old cars. I'm on the comfort and connectivity team ❤. I drive because I need to and not because I like it. After work I want to get into a car with pleasant temperature (I live in Brazil, it's hot here), with comfortable seats and a good sounds system to listen my fav playlist while I move at 10 km/h in traffic jam. Personally I use a Xiaomi cordless air compressor that is incredibly useful for our bikes and car, it even looks good - others said they don't last long, but ours is 7 years old.

Mind boggling!🤯 This makes the Tesla Model 3 a dinosaur, I know it is ageing but it's definitely so behind including the Refresh version. I also now get why Xiaomi started with a sedan instead of crossover SUV with more demand, they actually don't want too much demand for now as they learn the early manufacturing/design issues. At this rate, Xiaomi should make their own EV batteries and home energy storage batteries/power stations.
Xiaomi operating system also interesting if you have a lot of their products which beats the ecosystem of Apple and Google. For example, if you buy a new Xiaomi TV, smartphone, or laptop and after logging you account-you could check the status and control of all Xiaomi products you own instantly without setup or configuration. I've been using a Xiaomi phone for the last 5 years, with no real desire to jail-break or otherwise modify it. I used to love doing that. I think they'll make very desirable cars too.
Thanks for the review.
It is a nice EV, but outside China there is a shrinking market for sedans. Specially for large heavy sedans.
FYI : "Xiao Mi" means "small rice" or "little rice".
Yes if you translate word for word but putting the 2 words together it is actually Millet, the Chinese calls it "little rice"
I've been noticing the watches you wear in your videos; they're fantastic 😍
Its a marine master right?
@@RoberttSmithh yup looks like it!
@@bingbingmayea you're right. I've seen him wearing some unique pieces too (bullhead chronos and more). I think he's wearing a Marine Master in this vid
4:51 looks like a marine master 300. on a jubilee!
cartirebro rocks a lot of cool seiko divers
Thank you for noticing! That is indeed my Seiko SLA023 on a Strapcode jubilee bracelet. I'm a big watch enthusiast, and always try to mix up the pieces that I wear in each video.
(...)I think you... are out of your mind. (...)
So good!
The physical button attachment is a fantastic idea, it probably means there’ll be more of those attachment points for other xiaomi products in the future, potentially eliminating all these overpriced options other car companies charge you
4 door coupe = Porsche. Right. Some media will just say anything to make Chinese product looks bad for the views. If anything, it looks more like an Ioniq 6. Yes yes that car also took some design from Porsche but it's not like Porsche copyrighted the design sheesh.
It's copycat nevertheless
While I was blown away by the SU7 at launch, the issues that got reporting soon after, both technical as well as after-sales, told me it would be wise to wait a year or so to allow xiaomi to correct their mistakes.
Losing traction control and crashing, unfortunate placement of the air suspension, reports of using aluminum wiring, and so on, has made me lose faith in its safety departement. I own several xiaomi products and the sheer quality of those is just plain awesome. I’m sure they’ll be able to nail it completely soon, but just not yet. The fact that they’re losing money on each car sold isn’t a good situation either. It can shift (design) decisions in the wrong direction because selling at a loss is not a viable long-term solution.
The sheer toxicity in the Chinese market in general gives no benefit to anyone, not the consumer, manufacturer, retailer, or anyone
U.S. and European car manufacturers can’t compete with that price.
Would you mind to mention RMB price as well when you quote the price? Even if its displayed discreetly somewhere.
I jus with these companies made rhd cars as well
I think it's only a matter of time
It absolutely does not look like a Porsche. No ideea where that keeps coming from
It's a beautiful design and Porsche has no vehicle that has the same front end or back end design.
awesome videos, next Li L6
the 5s beginning is special.
what about all of the issues that have been showing up lately?
Exactly, tons of brake failure crashes, poor welding, can unlock the car using voice commands from the outside of the car, etc etc
I know right, just don’t believe some of these dedicated comments are real.
@@sarkplexlol if you think that kind of pre-production model issues are gonna stop people from buying this you are truly mistaken. This car already got more than 100k locked in pre orders. There are no other competitors that can provide this much level of technology, performance and connectivity for this price.
@@cwdjdsd-36321cs those were not pte production models, they were production ready cars bought by real customers.
Nice car, great price in china - wish we could access such ev cars with similar prices in Europe. As a family man I would prefer wagon or van currently.
NIO ET5 Touring is one of the most beautiful cars on the market today, and a proper wagon too! And the best electric vans are of course from China as well, with IMO the Xpeng X9 at the top. Neither one of those is cheap though, unfortunately. Although in China they've got some even cheaper wagons, such as the new Wuling Starlight, which starts at the equivalent of just $15k USD in the Chinese domestic market.
