Xiaomi EVs Criticized for Poor Quality, Using Aluminum Instead of Copper, 40% Cancellation Rate

  • On March 28th, Chinese technology company Xiaomi announced the launch of their first electric vehicle, the SU7. The standard retail price is less than 220,000 yuan, equivalent to roughly 31 thousand US dollars, undercutting market expectations and signalling an intent to compete with Tesla. However, many people have observed striking resemblances between the SU7 and the Porsche Taycan, not just in appearance but also in the design of the car key and the key battery replacement. Some internet users jokingly suggested renaming the SU7 as "Bao Shi mi," which means Porche Mi, a combined name for Porche and Xiaomi.

    In the United States, in the 1960s and 1970s aluminum was used in home wiring for cheapness' sake. Later there were a lot of problem with oxidation and loosening of connectors due to significant expansion/contraction. Afterward, the US went back to copper wire. Using aluminum wire indicates that the manufacturer does not intent the vehicle to last a long time.

    It’s cheap for a reason. The Chinese copy almost everything from the design perspective only. However, when it comes to engineering, craftsmanship, build quality, and more, they suck. They try to make their cars as cheap as possible. Always remember that you get what you pay for. Major automakers price their EVs higher but they produce acceptable level of quality. I don’t get it why don’t the Chinese build something of good quality and go head-to-head with the major automakers. The Chinese really love to do it cheap and affordable. In the long term, it may sound good; but in the long term, it would be very problematic.

This group of 150 million is the one wasting all their money on this constant crap. Also that woman is likely very wealthy. She was able to withdraw 30,000 yuan in a single day. • @JohnDlugosz
      @JohnDlugosz Месяц назад +1

      Aluminum wire is not used for good reasons, but running hot is not one of them! The narrator also stated that the lower conductivity is made up for by increasing the cross section area. The heating issues is not because the wires are aluminum, but because they substituted a lower gauge to save money, which they would have done with copper as well.
      The main issue with Al wiring is because _mixing_ different metals causes reactions. In a home, the various fittings are generally made for copper, and the rare Al house has to insert special adapters. Now guess what's another thing they can cheap out on?
      The final issue is with how many times the wire can be flexed before it cracks.
      Note that all the distribution cables you have overhead on towers and underground, from the powerplant to the residential substation, is all made of aluminum.

Keep in mind that the units left the factory., were transported down the freeway, and ended their journey at the final site where they were installed. to be permanent homes. • @CunningtonR
      @CunningtonR Месяц назад +4

      From Tesla: Aluminum wire is cheaper than copper, but the wires must be thicker to carry the same amount of current. In addition, every type of attachment (breakers, outlets, etc.) must be specifically rated for use with aluminum wire (and many are not). Lastly, care must be taken to apply the correct anti-oxidizing paste. If aluminum wiring is not properly installed, over time it can cause dangerous overheating resulting in fires! For this reason, we strongly recommend the use of copper wires for EV charging to avoid the risk of improper installation. The Tesla Wall Connector is rated only for copper wire.
      Doesn’t sound like they are fond of Aluminum wire, even for the home charging system.

    Oh, the damn information gap has led many to believe that Xiaomi cars appeared out of nowhere. I think this is due to a lack of understanding of the information from China. Xiaomi's car factory is operated by BAIC (Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Co.), and the project was initiated several years ago. BAIC Group serves as a contract manufacturer for many automotive brands such as Mercedes-Benz, Hyundai, and Foton. As for the technology of Xiaomi cars, Xiaomi has poached a large number of talents from Geely Automobile Research Institute, including the head of the institute. Speaking of Geely Automobile Group, I think some people might be familiar with it. This company owns Volvo, Lynk & Co, Geely, and smart, and even now holds substantial shares in Aston Martin and Mercedes-Benz. I hope that a random video on a RUclips channel should not sway the judgment of an intellectually capable person.
    Let me repeat the specs of the Xiaomi SU7:
    Length (mm): 4997
    Width (mm): 1963
    Height (mm): 1455
    Wheelbase (mm): 3000
    CLTC pure electric range (km): 700
    Official 0-100 km/h acceleration (s): 2.78

    Most U.S. homes have aluminum wire for the main runs, such as the street feed to the Main Breaker and from there to any Subpanels (usually 100 A USE-2). It is mandatory to use anti-corrosion grease at the connectors, but that is recommended for copper wire too. 1960's homes which used aluminum wire for the outlets (15 or 20 A) apparently didn't use grease, so suffered corrosion at connectors which gave high resistance heating and sometimes caused fires. So, no problem using aluminum wire for the high current runs in EV's, if designed correctly.

Once there was an issue with the water pump. They didn't charge anything for the repair. We got a phone call from the dealer afterward to explain and apologise, "That should not have happened." Then it was rather sadly rear-ended. Too expensive to repair. so we took the money the insurance paid for it and bought a new car. Guess which brand. If people are so stupid to buy a car from a company that was making rather crappy cell-phones and decided somewhere last week "we're gonna make cars".... To the fears of European manufacturers of the Chinese car manufacturers, relax, it is not hard to see their products are absolutely dreadful all around and the support is even worst.

    While i think that they may very well fix those issues, undercutting the competition by incurring losses does not 'convey seriousness'. Quite the opposite. In conveys desperation. But the same goes for almost all legacy car companies as well.

    I am a Taiwanese who used to work in China over 10 years ago. Even 10 years ago, many average Chinese worker who have not received higher education already knew for a fact that aluminum wire is of lower quality than copper. It is just a common knowledge that you pick up as you work. The fact that Xiaomi chooses aluminum over copper just shows how desperate they are in cutting costs
