WOW! This song reminds me of my best friend, Ann Brady, who died of stage 4 breast cancer at the age of 46, March 15, 2001...out on the dance floor. RIP Ann. Thank you for the memories.
Yes, the Todd Terry mix is way superior to this version. The Rob Squad had a nice trio of songs for female Friday and this was the best of the three. Sadly, still waiting on some Dale Bozzio and Missing Persons.
Personally I prefer this original version. I’ve never been a fan of remixes, especially dance remixes. I prefer how the song was originally intended to be. If it was meant to be a dance song I feel it would have started as a dance song. The soft, touching parts get lost in a dance mix.
I always loved the dance remix of this song because it was such a contrast between upbeat rhythm/bass and her calming/soothing voice. It was like a trance❤
The Todd Terry Remix took it to another level - dance wise: Similar Dance Style: Tyler Collins "Girl Night out", Kristine W "Feel What You Want", Billy Ray Martin "loving arms" "whos gonna lift you up", Staxx "Joy", Livin' Joy - "Dreamer", Aretha Franklin "Deeper Love", Crystal Waters "100% pure love"
They definitely need to do Kristine W one of these days. She's almost completely unknown out of the dance clubs, but has something like 15 #1 hits on the club chart. Feel What You Want would be an excellent starting point.
It is one of the best remixes of a song. Interestingly, since it doesn't veer to far away from the original. (I usually prefer covers that go a completely different direction). But somehow, Todd Terry managed to improve upon the original mix.
A great duo who have been together as a couple for decades as well. That's something that you don't hear about too often. They took a break while raising their children, but came back to make more music together.
This is a song that I can remember the EXACT moment that I heard the dance remix of it! It was February, 1996, it was on a Saturday. I was driving to a friends house, and I was at the intersection of Northfield Parkway and Long Lake Rd in Troy Michigan (where I grew up). I was 17 years old and I remember thinking "this song is amazing!" and wanted to listen to it again and again and again. I can still remember looking at of my car and seeing all the snow on the ground and picking the desert and the warm weather when she said "like the deserts miss the rain."
I the same in 1996 listening to the same song only I was 16 in 1996😉. I remember listening to this song outside under the stars on a April evening in 1996 with my teenage friends. Your like me! Memory so clear it like a time warpe.
EBTG is phenomenal. Smooth pop with Tracy Thorne's soothing voice. Songs like "Driving", "Cross My Heart," and "Come Hell Of High Water" are some of there 80's hits. The dance mix of this song made it a worldwide hit!
“Driving” would be my choice for Female Friday because it’s an accessible record for the RJR audience. On top of that, it’s a great song. “Apron Strings” is another favorite. ✌🏽
One of their other big hits here in the UK was a version of the Rod Stewart song, 'I Don't Want To Talk About It', which was 7 years before 'Missing'. Her voice shines in that.
They got their name from a sign in a store that said "Everything for Sale, But the Girl." They started out as kinda folksy laid back music until the song Missing got remixed and became a worldwide smash. After this they decided to start experimenting in dance music and became even more successful. Check out their amazing cd TEMPERAMENTAL.
I'd love to see you guys react to New Order- Bizarre Love Triangle. They layering of the synths is incredible. You'd really dig it! They were huge in the UK in the 80s.
Great song and a big hit that most Baby Boomer/Gen Xers will know. I’m actually surprised that J & Amber haven’t reacted to it already (they previously did “Blue Monday” and “True Faith”). ✌🏽
Whoa. Crazy cosmic stuff happening. I pulled out this disc after i don't know how long (years) and had it going in the car TODAY. Was thinking "Rob Squad needs to react to this!" Jaw hit the floor when it popped up on my screen. EBTG formed in the 80s, made quite a few albums but this song is FIRMLY planted in the 90s ('94 to be precise). It got remixed by TODD TERRY and became a MASSIVE club hit. This group was well ahead of it's time. The 90s (and house music) arrived and they were a perfect fit. I don't think they even saw that coming. Many more songs to take in from EBTG. And Tracey's solo stuff! Check out the remix ...
Killer song - totally part of the background music of my young adulthood - becoming a grown-up in the Bay Area in the 1980's, Everything But the Girl on repeat.....
This takes me back to the nineties, European electronic music, and trip-hop groups like Portishead and Tricky. Also makes me think of the movie Trainspotting. Good song. Good reaction.
This was from the mid 90s (and was their big breakthrough), but these 2 had been around since the mid 80s (Tracey Thorn had a solo album and a brief stint in a new-wave-era folk band called The Marine Girls before that). This was a bit of a departure for them; for most of their career, they proffered the kind of jazzy "cocktail pop" artists like Swing Out Sister and Sade were doing around the same time. This showcased not just the soaring, ethereal vocals of Thorn, but the genius if multi-instrumentalist/ producer Ben Watt, her partner in music (and in life). It's a gamble that obviously paid off (big time).
THANK YOU, THANK YOU THANK YOU. I am so glad you are doing EBTG. They have a great body of work from the 80s through the 90s (at least ten albums). I LOVE MARRIED COUPLES THAT PERFORM TOGETHER. Please play more. You will not be disappointed.
this was a 90s banger, we that grew up in that time danced to lots of killer remixes of this song. It was kind of vibe that related to a category called "trip hop" that has a hypnotizing quality to it... you should try reacting to massive attack's "unfinished sympathy", portishead "only you" and morcheeba "tape loop"
This girl has such a beautiful voice. I came across them in the early '90s and have never been disappointed in any of their music. He's got a great voice too. It's worth your while to hear a few more. Amber will love pretty much everything they do.
5:27 the fact that the part "like the deserts miss the rain" part is missing really gets the point further, like this part of the chorus is sweet and we wait for it and in section of the song, this little break, we can't have it it is so sad but in a musical way, and then it comes back because it's just a song, but for a second we realize fully how missing something is something that cuts deep
You'd LOVE their song Apron Strings, about motherhood. It was used in the John Hughes film She's Having a Baby starring Kevin Bacon and Elizabeth McGovern.
I was just thinking the other day how I hadn’t heard this song in years! I remember taping this off the radio in the nineties and being completely obsessed with it. ❤
This is such a bamger. The dance mix is what made me hear the song initially one of the few remixes of a song that were better than the orginal.. Reminds me of my childhood 🎉
Anything EBTG is dope!Ben Watt as a DJ/producer is incredible and paired with Tracys Thorne's voice makes all their beats and music just total ear candy
This reminded me! Missing Persons!! You have never covered this band for female Fri! Dale Bozzio in her saranwrap jacket was the inspiration for lady gaga! With classic 80's pop hits; Destination Unknown, Words, Noticeable One, Windows, Walking in LA!!! Got to check out Dale Bozzio of Missing Persons! She is the bomb! And certainly unique with the squeek in her voice like in song: Words. No one else like her!!!🎉🎉🎉
From the very first time I heard this song it has had its hooks in me! I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE it! This song was everywhere when I was in the Med in 1995! That bass line is KILLER in a club!
The Todd Terry Club Mix is the dance version everyone is mentioning. It’s the version that everyone fell in love with. I didn’t even know this version existed until recently and I really can’t even enjoy this one. The added beats and synths really give it that extra emotion and nostalgia
Echoing the comments, the dance remixes of Missing were ubiquitous in a lot of late 1990s clubs and music stations. Thorn has a song called "It's All True". It's so GOOD! Give it a listen.
Something about those lyrics "I step off the train.....I'm walking down your street again" makes me recognize this song immediately and instantly love it.
Tracey Thorn just reminds me a bit of Annie Lennox. They both have that alto smooth voice but also have good range. This is definitely a 90s song; like a slow dance/rave song, especially the remix. Another song that I love of theirs is from one of my favorite Val Kilmer movies "The Saint". The song is "Before Today". Another song that has a good beat but also good to just chill with. 😎👍
Great watch. My comment is for the dance mix. During this time (estimating), and I know that I moved from Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, USA to Toronto, Ontario Canada - Halley’s Comet was overhead so it must’ve been around 1997 - my partner at the time who is Canadian and I am a US citizen. This is the song that reminds me of the trips back-and-forth constantly for a couple of years. that and well, but we are still friendly so it’s all a good memory. I’m so happy that they did it so well. I like the dance mix and the regular album version. Thank you for reviewing. I hope you enjoy it.
....Heaven... I was addicted to this song for years...still hits EBTG was 80s 90s 00s 10s..and still, always evolving from the simplicity of Fascination to the remixes of Walking Wounded to the trance like Five Fathoms and every track between.
Can't say enough about this collaboration and duo. Such a nice catalogue of music. "Driving" "Apron Stings" and so many more. One of my early 80's favs. Thanks for the post and reaction. Please stay safe and much love.
Love this song. It is been a while but I used to listen to this a lot in the early 2ks. The version I used to listen to was more electronica (same singer). There is another song called Stay (I Missed You) by Lisa Loeb. It is a different type of song but from either the late 90s or 2000s. It is a beautiful and fun song.
I was introduced to this song via the dance version. I was at a club night called TRADE in London, mid-nineties, known for its hard house and the final track they played one night was the dance version and I thought "Is it? 'Everything but the Girl'... in TRADE?!" memories!
Christina Aguilera - Ain't No Other Man - Candy Man (Both Great Horns !!) Also - Lady Marmalad Annie Lenox (Eurythmics) - Would I Lie to You - I Need a Man - Thorn in My Side Gwen Stefanie - It's My Life - What You Waiting For Shikira - When ever Where ever - Objection Tango Head Pins - Don't it Make You Feel (like Dancing) - Turn it Loud - Just One More Time Toronto - Your Daddy Don't Know - Start Telling the Truth
I love Everything But The Girl. I own all their albums on CD up until "Walking Wounded". The first EBTG song I heard on the radio was "Cross My Heart". But for me their album "Worldwide" and "The Language of Life" are my favorites. The songs in these two albums like "Understanding", "Talk To Me Like The Sea", "British Summertime", "One Place", "Love is Strange", "Twin Cities" in the former and "Driving", "Get Back Together", "Meet Me In The Morning" and "Take Me" from the latter album resonates with me a lot and reflect what I consider the best era of their musical journey. I also love their cover of the Rod Stewart song "I Don't Wanna Talk About It" and the Paul Simon song "The Only Living Boy In New York" from their Home Movies The Best of EBTG album. You should check them out. "Amplified Heart" was a more mature album basically a product of the evolution of their music after years of adversity and came much later after Ben Watt underwent surgery for his illness and marked a change in the direction of their music from folk/pop jazz to a more synth, rave dance music oriented one.
Oooh, this was eerie. I haven't heard this song in years. When I did hear it, it was usually the dance remix. I don't think I ever knew the name of the group or the title of the song until now. So when I started listening, it sounded so familiar, but I couldn't quite remember it until it got to the chorus. It's a beautiful tune, and I'm grateful to be reminded of it, so thank you!
The name of their group is hilarious. It was named after a store. The store was either named Everything but the girl or had sales that proclaimed everything but the girl. It meant that everything in the store is for sale EXCEPT the cashier….who was a girl.
Yeah g'day, Welcome to the wonderfully glorious rabbit hole of EBTG and the fabulously magical Tracy Thorn, there has been good news in that after a long hiatus they have reformed to bring us the soulful sound that they developed. IMHO Tracy sounds truly magical and in her element in ' I Don't Want to Talk About It' and one for Jay is 'Driving' which has some beat to it and once again Tracy's voice. See you round like a rissole.
thats what all music needs to be about. Quality, feelings, good song, histories. Loved that you did this song. I am not so older than you and i really dont understand where music lost its way. If you keep diging on older songs, men you will get lost in time. 30's to the 90's, guys you will certainly find precious songs that certainly will survive to the time.
Everything But The Girl has been around like 40 years now and are still going. They actually put out a new record earlier this year. Speaking of which, Amber your shirt reminded me of a song I love that came out earlier this year by a lower profile artist, so this wouldn't be something for the channel, but I think you'd really enjoy the song; "Kind" by Maia Sharp. You can find an audio version of it here on RUclips. Your t-shirt was more or less the message of the song!
Love these guys! They did form in the 80's, this song is from the mid 90's. Tracy has a beautiful voice! They have a lot of great songs, hope you'll check out more. They also released a new album this year, their first together in 24 years, and it's very good. Tracy and Ben are married as well. And yes, Ben, the guy in the video, is the other half of the duo. Some of my personal favorites from them: Driving, These Early Days, When All's Well, Don't Leave Me Behind, Me And Bobby D, Wrong, Single, Blue Moon Rose, Run A Red Light, No One Knows We're Dancing, and so many more. Those are just the tip of the iceberg. I'm glad you guys enjoyed this song, it's a great song! I hope you'll check out more. I also hope you'll check out another favorite of mine - Siouxsie And The Banshees. They are so good and have a lot of great songs. Some of my favorites from them: Christine, Israel, Arabian Knights, Fireworks, Melt, The Sweetest Chill, The Passenger, Peek a Boo, The Last Beat of My Heart, Kiss Them For Me, Spellbound, Face to Face, Cities In Dust, Dazzle, Switch, Happy House, Sick Child, Stargazer, The Rapture, and so many more.
Tracy thorns voice is easily up there with the best so breathy the way she stretches it out with breathy mouth watering perfection that leaves you in a trance Brilliant incredible female vocalist not a bad song out of there whole catalogue genius duo and what an amazing duo they are
It always makes me think of my Grandma because I bought her this song in 1995 when I was living in Germany and she was back in England and she loved the lyric "I miss you like the deserts miss the rain". She continued to play the CD until she died in 2000.
It came out in 94 and the remix was a huge success. FYI, they are a husband and wife duo. They've stopped for a while because her husband fell I'll to a rare disease and it took him a few years to recover. They both have solo projects worth checking out also.
Finally... The Most Luscious Voice of the 80s...and still recording.. adore Tracy Thorne. Album after album full of amazing cool jazz perfection. Try Paris Match with the Style Council, Frost and Fire...Fascibation, Five Fathoms, Temperamental, Come on home, Dont leave me Behind, Walking Wounded, Lullaby of Clubland, Each and Every One, and so many more...just drop the needle....the remixes, live performances, album version her voice will melt you..his music will hold her up...
I love the fact that it’s a song that fits all types of relationships, none of the lyrics are explicitly romantic and so is a reflection of longing for something/someone that you’ve lost that everyone can relate to. One of my brothers and I live near each other but nowhere near where we grew up. We do however drive there to visit our Dad quite often (Mum passed away a long time ago), almost every visit home we drive past the house we grew up in (Dad no longer lives in the same house but is in the same town) and remark on the the parts that are the same and the ones that have changed. In that case for us it would be a longing for people, places and a point in time that are long gone…but this song is still a reflection of that and not just that you’re missing an ex.
As others have mentioned, “Driving” by EBTG is a great tune. Also, check out Tracy Thorne as the female lead on The Style Council’s “Paris Match.” Her voice with that Bossa Nova/jazzy style from Paul Weller and Mick Talbot always puts me in a mellow mood.
this was written after Ben nearly died from an autoimmune disease, you will notice how very thin he is in the video and them trying to find each other again. my favorite group of all time. ♥
Thanks, J & Amber for the EBTG love. Yup, cool vibe and mood. Sometimes hopeful, sometimes melancholy. They’re consistently good. Shout out to the “Driving” and “Apron Strings” fans. 👏🏾
Reminds me of the love of my life. I was young and all. Passing by her house always brings tears to my eyes. She moved and found someone else . But everytime I pass by her old house I still remember her .
The remixed dance version is the most famous version of this song, it went to #1 in the UK back in 1994. The name Everything but the girl comes from a closing down sale sign in a shop window.
I associate this song with my first trip to Venezuelan island in 1996. This song was played every night at the resort I was at. At the time I had no clue what it was; but I did know I liked it! It would be quite a few years before I would hear it again. Now when I hear this and I'm transported back to the island.
The version of this song that became a huge hit was the remix done in 1995 by Todd Terry. The original version is lovely as well. Tracy Thorn has a gorgeous voice.
Holly smokes! I can't believe you guys are reacting to this! Such niche, high-IQ, deep-cut music! Tracy Thorne is just a phenomenal talent, with a priceless voice! The dancier version of this song was more popular and received more radio airplay. They've got so many other incredible songs. My favorites are probably "Fascination" and "apron strings".
This a great song that I've heard somewhere in my past. I have never really known anything about this cool mysterious dance track! Great voice & COWBELLS!! Reminds me of Seal's cool groove. Most times, I know the song that you two react to. This time I reacted to a song that you reintroduced to me that definitely needed my attention! Thanks!
This song came out in late 1995. I never realized this before, but she sounds so much like Sade!!! I could see Sade singing this, and it would pretty much sound the same.
This amazing song was the first to be in the US hot #100 for more than a year lasting a magnificent 55 weeks. Even today in the world of streaming it is the eleventh longest lasting single chartwise. The I Didn't Know I Was Looking For Love ep is amazing with the title track being a must listen, however, for me it is the sensational cover of Captain Beefheart's My Head Is My Only House Unless It Rains that is the top tune. They transform this song into a thing of sublime beauty. It truly is a case of if you know you know.
Tracie Thorn has one of Those Voices!! Most people only know the remixed version but the original is good on its own. This is a Mood, sad and beautiful!!
The dance remix is what really pushed this into the charts.
Love the remix ❤
One of the few remixes that I liked.
They should’ve done the remix.
I think it’s the Jack & Rory remix…don’t quote me.
Todd terry remix
Her voice on “Protection” by Massive Attack is sublimely beautiful. As a matter of fact, ANY SONG by Massive Attack is worth a listen!!!
I hope they do Massive Attack soon. MA has beautiful songs and Trip Hop is a bit underrepresented here.😉
Yeah think they would love that whole trip hop Bristol vibe, Portishead as well. Protection is such a great track.
It's been years since I heard Protection, and recently listened to a remastered version - wow! Definitely recommend as a follow-up to this song!
Yep any song
@@ThisDarvishWanders 100%
This is from their 1994 album, Amplified Heart. A dance remix became a pretty big radio and dance floor hit a year or so after.
That album doesn't have a bad song on it.
@@flinx649Right? My favorite being "Troubled Mind."
WOW! This song reminds me of my best friend, Ann Brady, who died of stage 4 breast cancer at the age of 46, March 15, 2001...out on the dance floor.
RIP Ann.
Thank you for the memories.
k smooch 😙😙

No... This is the 90's...
So sorry for your loss ❤
So sorry. Tracey actually wrote this about her childhood friend.
There were some killer mixes of this absolute banger over the years. Beautiful voice.

Awesome song to rave dance to the dance remix

Nah it sucked
The Todd Terry remix is the only way I can listen to this sing. Every ither version sounds like something is missing.
FANTASTIC that you finally got to Everything But the Girl! The entire Amplified Heart album this is from is an absolute stunner!
Tracy Thorn also did guest vocals with Massive Attack. Check out the song "Protection".
Came here to say this. She was such a great addition to those Trip Hop bangers.
Yes! I was going to suggest this one! It's on my eternal playlist.
A great duo who have been together as a couple for decades as well. That's something that you don't hear about too often. They took a break while raising their children, but came back to make more music together.
There's the regular version and a dance version of this song. Both are good
Agreed. Usually, I have a strong preference, but they did a great job with both arrangements.
Yes both versions are fantastic

Understandable/relatable.
It's so good!
Oh, my, YES to _Before Today_ , especially some of the live versions out there.
She sounds like a mix between Annie Lennox and Sade
Her voice always reminds me of Lisa Stansfield…just more chilled out.
Such a beautiful voice!!!
I always loved this song.
Me too! 🙂
I hope you enjoy it.
one of the most popular songs of its era and a really cool song
....Heaven...
I was addicted to this song for years...still hits
EBTG was 80s 90s 00s 10s..and still, always evolving from the simplicity of Fascination to the remixes of Walking Wounded to the trance like Five Fathoms and every track between.
Can't say enough about this collaboration and duo. Such a nice catalogue of music. "Driving" "Apron Stings" and so many more. One of my early 80's favs. Thanks for the post and reaction. Please stay safe and much love.
The dance remix was everywhere! This song had a big moment.
This song is a GEM !! The Club Re-mix is a total Jam, Jay would make it a work out song for the beat... It's smokin
Christina Aguilera - Ain't No Other Man - Candy Man (Both Great Horns !!) Also - Lady Marmalad
Annie Lenox (Eurythmics) - Would I Lie to You - I Need a Man - Thorn in My Side
Gwen Stefanie - It's My Life - What You Waiting For
Shikira - When ever Where ever - Objection Tango
Head Pins - Don't it Make You Feel (like Dancing) - Turn it Loud - Just One More Time
Toronto - Your Daddy Don't Know - Start Telling the Truth
All their 80's stuff is brilliant. 'Each and Every One' is my absolute favourite of their songs
As many have already mentioned, the Todd Terry Remix of ths track is absolutely killer and was part of the Soundtrack of my University days....
Yeah g'day,
Welcome to the wonderfully glorious rabbit hole of EBTG and the fabulously magical Tracy Thorn, there has been good news in that after a long hiatus they have reformed to bring us the soulful sound that they developed.
Yes, finally!!! She is awesome!!! This song was EVERYWHERE!!! This whole album is about perfect...
From the album "Amplified Heart" which is loaded. They got the name from a sign outside a store that said Everything but the girl was for sale.
90's I love this song! The remix is amazing too. Even better.
Tracy thorns voice is easily up there with the best so breathy the way she stretches it out with breathy mouth watering perfection that leaves you in a trance
Brilliant incredible female vocalist not a bad song out of there whole catalogue genius duo and what an amazing duo they are
The cowbell mix was the original album mix but most recognize the Todd Terry Club Remix/US Version as one played a great deal.
Love this song - puts me into such a "groove" mood whenever I hear it.
Are they from New Zealand?
❤️
this was written after Ben nearly died from an autoimmune disease, you will notice how very thin he is in the video and them trying to find each other again. my favorite group of all time. ♥
He wrote a book about his ordeal. He had to have about 15 feet of his small intestine removed and was on a restricted diet.
But everytime I pass by her old house I still remember her .
omg, one of my favourite songs, ive not watched the video reaction yet, but i'm so excited!!! lol
thank you
This is not my type of music, but this song has lived in my head since the 90s. I go back and listen to it at least once a year.
Omgosh I haven’t heard this song since I was young! I loved it! Thank you!!!
There was a dance mix of this 1994 song that was played a lot at clubs in the mid-nineties.
The remixed dance version is the most famous version of this song, it went to #1 in the UK back in 1994.
The name Everything but the girl comes from a closing down sale sign in a shop window.
A Classic!!! Reminiscent of Lisa Stansfield...
I associate this song with my first trip to Venezuelan island in 1996. This song was played every night at the resort I was at. At the time I had no clue what it was; but I did know I liked it! It would be quite a few years before I would hear it again. Now when I hear this and I'm transported back to the island.
I haven't heard this song in years! I forgot how great her voice is. Wow.
One of my favourite songs,so many amazing dance remixes.
The version of this song that became a huge hit was the remix done in 1995 by Todd Terry. The original version is lovely as well. Tracy Thorn has a gorgeous voice.
What a great song! Thank you for checking it out. Another song you must listen to is, "Language of Life".
Great song. Brings back some MAJOR memories...
Always liked this song but never knew the artist. So glad to finally learn it.
Always loved this song. So gorgeous yet sad and moody. And this version is probably the best I've heard!
This version is my favorite. Thanks for reacting.
This took me back this was/is a beautiful song! But I always thought it was very sad!
Tracie Thorn has one of Those Voices!! Most people only know the remixed version but the original is good on its own. This is a Mood, sad and beautiful!!
