I went to see them at the O2 in London last October. Those 41 years rolled away like Avalon mist on a summer's day, and there I was watching Bryan Ferry sing More Than This. What an amazing experience, never thought it would happen. I've seen Genesis and Elton and Peter Gabriel in the last year or so and you know, it's just possible Roxy was the best, in their understated way.
Please, I was 17 and dancing the night away in Barons nightclub. The 80’s was the greatest period for New Romantics and boy were Roxy music at the top of their game. I just wished there was a revival of that era. Such a great time for us kids born in the mid 60;s to early 70’s. TrueType was the happiest time of my life.
"Love Is the Drug" is iconic, one of the best song openings ever and a must-listen. "Same Old Scene" is one of my fav Roxy Music songs, and I rarely see any mention of it: sax, synth, and that bass line is a killer.
Jay & Amber, you'll love their "Love Is The Drug" and singer Bryan Ferry's solo hit "Slave To Love" !!! "Love Is The Drug" is upbeat, Jay will like that!! Love how fast you came back to them!!
This is just such a beautiful song with so many incredible textures in the music and of course Bryan Ferry's vocals are outstanding. It's one of those great bittersweet songs that moves you. Great reaction, guys.
@@Inequitiesit might sound like Elevator Music perhaps on first listen (like some have dismissed Steely Dan) but give it another listen or two. It grows on you, especially with headphones or a great sound system
Carolyn, I grew up in the 60's and I agree, this is a beautiful, sad song, and the 80's was a great decade, esp. its music. Btw, I have all the Brian Ferry and Roxy Music lp's.
I met my late husband in 1983 and we lived in Harvard Square in Cambridge, MA. We got married in 1985. We had a daughter Erica in 1990, and a son in 1993. We were married for 31 years, and I lost him to an asthma attack on August 10, 2016. Absolutely gut wrenching. Every time I hear this song it brings me right back. He was an amazing husband and dad ❤️❤️
Roxy Music! ❤ The original keyboard player, Brian Eno is a *huge* influence on popular music, producing U2, Talking Heads, David Bowie (especially during his classic Berlin Trilogy era), Devo, Coldplay etc. Not to mention pioneering Ambient Electronic music with his own solo work! Brian Ferry’s no slouch either!
Bryan Ferry is the only Englishman more suave than James Bond. 😊 I cannot recommend enough his song, "Slave To Love" from Bryan Ferry's highly successful solo album, 'Boys and Girls'. And it's fair to say there is as much melancholy and yearning in his music as there is romance. Btw, he just celebrated his 78th birthday. 🎉
The film 'Skyfall' implies that Bond is Scottish. Not that it matters. David Niven was called "archetypically English". But he had a Scottish name and was born in Scotland to a Scottish father and a French mother. Then again there is Ian Anderson.
Brian Ferry is the 1980’s version of a crooner. He was the suave gentleman of the time. The music plus his vocal style is really unique. It just has that je ne sais quoi.
Roxy Music is a brilliant band. Check out their debut single "Virginia Plain" to see how they started out. Very unconventional. Bryan Ferry had a terrific solo career, too. Check out "Slave to Love" from his album "Boys and Girls"
Ahhh, man you guys are killing me with the walk down memory lane tonight! One of the greatest songs ever. This entire album, Avalon, is a masterpiece. After Roxy Music, Bryan Ferry had an equally amazing solo career. He's one of those guys whose natural dress code is a tuxedo.
I loved your reaction to this, Jay and Amber. There are two Roxy Music eras, early and later, 'Virginia Plain', 'Pyjamarama', 'Street Life', 'Mother of Pearl', 'The Thrill of It All', is some of their earlier stuff; 'The Same Old Scene', 'The Space Between Us', 'Dance Away', 'Angel Eyes' and 'Oh Yeah' is some of their later stuff.
@@chantaloblander9039 It's an excellent album, I much prefer early Roxy Music, there's nothing wrong with their later stuff, it's good, but just different.
Love this song! Bryan Ferry is always just such a cool vibe. "Love is the Drug" is another awesome Roxy Music song I'd recommend. Edit: "Dance Away" is another good one of theirs I really like, too.
So good you reacted to this great New Romantic/New Wave song, and on WLIR Day! WLIR 92.7 FM was a radio station with a slogan that fit perfectly with the music they played, DARE TO BE DIFFERENT. WLIR changed their format in the early 80's & started playing New Wave music. My fav song by Roxy Music is "Love Is the Drug" released in the 70's. There are some prominent 80's New Wave bands that you never reacted to yet, namely XTC, Psychedelic Furs, Echo & the Bunnymen, and Siouxsie & the Banshees
Saw Roxy Music live once and Bryan Ferry solo twice and I have been fortunate enough to have met him on 3 different occasions while he was on holiday in my country. Bryan Ferry is one of those rare people (like Deep Purple's Ian Gillan) whom you do not feel disappointed when you meet them. Great reaction guys!!
Yea! Was hoping you guys would do this one! My Fav from them.... this is the song that made me buy the CD! :) Thanks for the Reaction, You Guys! :) PS- Hope You Don't Stay Sad for Too Long, Amber! :)
I saw him at the Greek. Between the cologne and perfume, it was the best smelling concert I’ve ever been to. One of the best sounding concerts as well. You could hear every instrument at all times with perfect sound levels.
This is the first song on the Avalon album and keeps you in that beautiful trance until the very end. I really hope, if not both, at least Amber gives the whole album a listen. Like she said, she doesn't know why, but I know she'll get it and find a hidden gem.
Early (1972-75) Roxy Music was really creative - Like nothing else - Virginia Plain, All I Want is You, Pyjarmarama and Streetlife are radically different
Their live version of "Both Ends Burning" is such high energy! They are such a great band. "Oh Yeah", "Angel Eyes" "Do The Strand" "In Every Dream Home A Heartache"-every one a different sound. I hope you have a great time diving into them.
Roxy Music with the amazing Bryan Ferry. They finally and rightfully took their place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame a few years ago. My favorite British pop/new wave group of the 80s. Thanks for listening to this beautiful song. Amber, you would really love their song “Love is the Drug.”
One of those songs you don't hear for a long time and then it hits you and it's, "Oh, God, this ripped the heart out of me back in the day. Make it stop. Not yet. I can't take it. God, it's so good."
Thank you Jay & Amber for doing this follow up to Roxy Music's "Avalon". I really have no words to express the full impact this song has on me (that I can admit to on a public platform ☺). Bryan Ferry.... his sensuous voice, his sensuous moves. And who else can wear a freaking bow tie with a leather jacket and look freaking that HOT!
Lovely song that never got off the Bubbling Under chart. 10,000 Maniacs, with new lead singer Mary Ramsey, did their own version in 1997, which finally got the song into the Top 40.
You guys have done the (admittedly awesome) smooth side of Roxy Music. You would definitely dig their more rocking side, too- instances where drummer Paul Thompson and guitarist Phil Manzanera have a chance to flex their musicianly muscles- "Street Life", "Editions Of You", "The Thrill Of It All", "Mother Of Pearl", "Love Is The Drug", "Virginia Plain, "Beauty Queen", "Grey Lagoons", etc. Both sides of the band were major influences on the new wave/ "new romantic" bands that came out of the UK in the early 80s. And yeah, they don't come any smoother than Roxy vocalist Bryan Ferry (who has had a pretty extensive solo career as well).
I'm so glad Amber said it felt sad.. It's beautiful; I love this song, but I cry every time I hear it. I cried back when I was young in the 80s, and I still do at 60. I thought it was just me.
‘If there is something ‘off the first record is a Roxy must. Been a fan since their beginning. Nobody looked like them & nobody sounded like them. Very influential band. Named my dog after them.
I heard this song just once on the radio back in '82 here in the US as a teen... that haunting melody etched an unforgettable and unique impression in my mind, but I never knew the title until many years later when I was able to discover the artists behind the song and hear it once again.
I remember when it played on the radio... and strangely, I rediscovered it with my youngest daughter while we were seeing "Lost in Translation" a few years ago. She fell in love with it and started to listen to Roxy Music's whole catalogue. 😄
My fave from Roxy. Bryan Ferry's voice was accompanied by female Haitian vocalist, Yanick Étienne, who registered in the higher notes during the verse and chorus. On the chorus, Fonzi Thornton, who worked with many artists, also sang backing vocals on the chorus. Just listen carefully to " . . while the sea on the tide . . " and you will hear Yanick's voice. Once you hear her and anchor your ear, you can hear her singing behind him with a lot of reverb and delay. So, it's not Bryan doing the falsetto, he's singing in the mid ranges throughout. Bryan did this on quite a few albums, where his voice was "shadowed" by a female. Bob Clearmountain's mixing is elegant.
Their early albums with Brian Eno are my favs but "Love Is The rug" was their most popular single. They didn't do covers but their live versions of John Lennon's "Jealous Guy" and Neil Young's "Like A Hurricane" are incredible.
Love this song. I played this album so many times. ... It's about time you reacted to a solo Joe Bonamassa for the first time. It's been almost 2 years since you discovered him with Beth Hart.
BOTH ENDS BURNING!!!! just some more rocking Roxy Music suggestions. 'Virginia Plain" ," If there is something ' "Remake/ Remodel" oh.....gee...so many....but, definitely ,Both Ends Burning....killer sax with Bryan's amazing vocals
Fantastic song one of my fav's for sure, I love early Roxy Music I listen to that Album at least once every 2 weeks. Both end's Burning is a fav aswell.
You should check out some Roxy Music from the early 70's. It's a uniquely different sound. This is from the 80's and it has a more contemporary and smooth sound compared to their earlier music. A few suggestions: Ladytron, Beauty queen, Amazona, The thrill of it all, Love is the drug, Both ends burning and...Re make Re model if you dare! There are many more greats, but these will give you an overall impression of their original sound from 1972-1975. The lead singer, Bryan Ferry also has an extensive solo career. Definitely worth checking that out as well.
Lyrics: [Verse 1] I could feel at the time There was no way of knowing Fallen leaves in the night Who can say where they're blowing? As free as the wind Hopefully learning Why the sea on the tide Has no way of turning [Chorus] More than this You know there's nothing More than this Tell me one thing More than this Ooh, there's nothing [Verse 2] It was fun for a while There was no way of knowing Like a dream in the night Who can say where we're going? No care in the world Maybe I'm learning Why the sea on the tide Has no way of turning [Chorus] More than this You know there's nothing More than this Tell me one thing More than this No, there's nothing More than this Nothing More than this More than this Nothing
TWO SONGS - ONE TITLE. I suggest Roxy Music singing 'Street Life' for one of their 70's hits for City Boy J, OR 'Street Life' by The Crusaders featuring Randy Crawford for a funky, jazzy anthem. Both awesome songs.
Bryan Ferry has a voice that can do what no other singer's can and that's to make you cry because you want to go to that world where the voice comes from, a world of complete peace and love, but you know you never can. I think that's especially true for the his song Zamba. His voice is so soft an airy yet so full of emotion. Yes Roxy Music has some different styles. The earlier albums influenced the punk and new wave genres, the later are more of what you heard here with Ferry's silky voice. Biggest Hits Roxy Music: Virginia Plain, Love Is The Drug, My Only Love, Dance Away, Oh Yeah. Bryan Ferry: Let's Stick Together, Slave To Love, Don't Stop The Dance.
The early Roxy albums are nothing like the later ones. Between ' Manifesto ' and ' Flesh and Blood ' it was as if they changed to Roxy 2.0 They later ones are good , but .......... the first 3 albums were extraordinary , experimental and unique works of art. Most people who have only heard the hits off Avalon and Flesh and Blood would be shocked by the original Roxy.
Thank you for reacting to this one , Jay and Amber! This is my all-time favorite Roxy Music song! It came out senior year in high school, and I STILL think it's one of THE most romantic songs! I look forward to seeing and hearing your reactions!

Yes, the first two were IT for me
Beautiful song, love the melody! 🎶🎸🎷🎹🎺🪈🎶♥️♥️
Love this song. I played this album so many times. ... It's about time you reacted to a solo Joe Bonamassa for the first time. It's been almost 2 years since you discovered him with Beth Hart.
For me “kiss and tell” is there best…ooooh that bass line is delicious ❤
Ohhh yes! I forgot that one! Let me go check my library, thanks!
Awesome song, great video, but it is Bryan Ferry solo.
I love Roxy music but this one is a gem 🖤
Seeing this song be reacted to brings me JOY!!!
For sure!
The Flaming Lips "Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots" & "Do You Realize"
"The Thrill of it All" off the Country Life album is my go to song by Roxy Music !
Fantastic song one of my fav's for sure, I love early Roxy Music I listen to that Album at least once every 2 weeks. Both end's Burning is a fav aswell.
Yes!!!
Lyrics:
[Verse 1]
I could feel at the time
There was no way of knowing
Fallen leaves in the night
Who can say where they're blowing?
As free as the wind
Hopefully learning
Why the sea on the tide
Has no way of turning
[Chorus]
More than this
You know there's nothing
More than this
Tell me one thing
More than this
Ooh, there's nothing
[Verse 2]
It was fun for a while
There was no way of knowing
Like a dream in the night
Who can say where we're going?
No care in the world
Maybe I'm learning
Why the sea on the tide
Has no way of turning
[Chorus]
More than this
You know there's nothing
More than this
Tell me one thing
More than this
No, there's nothing
More than this
Nothing
More than this
More than this
Nothing
Such a vibe ❤
