    I've been a full-size truck owner for over 30 years. Chevy, Dodge, Ford ... all of them legit work vehicles, but now that I'm retired. I don't need that. I ordered a 2019 Ridgeline Black Edition and can't wait until it arrives. Great review.

    Watching this in 2018. It's amazing how the critics forget that this is far less truck and more FAV (family activity vehicle). Any newly wed or new homeowner starting a family will swear by how important having the right family vehicle is, and I don't just mean transporting kids in the back. Anything you buy at Home Depot you can take home with this, anything you buy at Ikea you can take home with this. I can throw three heavy full-size ebikes in the bed which are impossible to carry on any hitch-mounted bike carrier. And if it's an airport trip this will haul 5 large suitcases with five people easy.
    But the real value of this vehicle is it's versatility with bed extenders, tonneau options, truck caps, a bed tent and the ability to switch between them. I can easily take the tonneau off if I need to transport bikes, slap on the tent when I get to my destination and then reinstall the tonneau at the end of the trip. The bed rails are low enough to get your hands inside to tie stuff down without having to climb inside, the bed height is low enough to easily lift even heavy items in, and the trunk can be used to hide all your every day stuff keeping all the bed available for whatever.
    Did I mention that it drives and handles like a car and not a traditional truck? That's important for drivers who may be intimidated getting behind the wheel of a big vehicle, especially shorter drivers. Lifted trucks are not for everyone.
    Honestly my only nitpick would be an extra two inches of leg room in back. But that's it. Honda has hit on a small but important niche market that is growing. It's just a matter of time before the automotive industry catches on and follows.

    Very nice review. I am so glad that you get the Ridgeline. A lot of truck fans are prejudice about the Ridgeline. Bashing it that it's not a truck but a car or whatever. But like you said, there are consumers out there, like myself, who are looking for a vehicle that is a comfortable daily driver, but at the same time, offers truck utility. And the Ridgeline is it. The ride quality is on par with the Lexus RX, if not even better. And the truck bed is something that you can't get on an RX, making the Ridgeline the better buy.

      Alex it is an amazing truck. I've owned mine now for 2 months and I'm in love with it. Mind you I've had sports cars for the last decade and traded in a 370z for it. I enjoy driving my Ridgeline as much or more then my Z. As you said the ride is amazing. If you are on the fence I'd say demo one for a couple days and it will sell itself.

      @@hdwblade you might have already figured this out (just came across this video a year after your post), but I can tell you my 06 Ridgeline has 221,000+ miles on it and still runs like a top. No oil leaks, tight steering, smooth shifts and solid suspension. All electrics work as well as the day it was built, and the only issues are minor (light out in radio cluster and had to replace the HVAC control module in dash - a very easy fix). Just do regular routine maintenance and the dang things run great for a long time.

    I have watched all of the reviews on this truck. You have nailed it better than all of them. I bought one of these and I could afford to buy most any car made , frankly I would have nothing else. It’s better for me in so many ways...Best vehicle I ever owned. The only thing it needs is a paddle shifter because if you dare to seriously sport drive this on twisty roads you won’t believe how capable it is for aggressive driving. Torque vectoring all wheel drive is a miracle that only Honda has mastered for a pick up...So happy I dumped my big bulky lumbering pick up and got one of these . I pull my bass boat, haul my dirt bike, carry all the cargo I ever need all with ease. Fit and finish is on par with anything except maybe a Range Rover...it’s a joy to drive each and every time...Oh, and you forgot to mention the built in dog bowls in the back doors!
    Good work on this presentation bub ! Keep it up.

    Great review and I'm the type of consumer that you point out in your video. I like full size trucks, especially with a diesel option, but I don't need such a truck for going back n forth to work, or to do my job. So, this Ridgeline fits the bill for when I occasionally need the functionality of a truck. I love the tech, the practicality and details both inside and outside on the Ridgeline, and the ability to commute to work in a quiet and comfortable vehicle. Now, if I could justify to my budget $42k I'd be all over it. Thx again for a great review.

  • @michaelg3911

    Very good review. Picking up my '18 RTL-E later today. I just don't need an F150 anymore. I don't haul large loads, tow a big boat or camper any longer. But I do a have a daily commute and need a utility vehicle on the weekends. We had an '08 Ridgeline and really miss it. We travel with our large dog a lot and we like the idea that with the rear seats up she can curl up on the floor instead of being up higher like she would be in a typical SUV with seats folded down. Having a fabrication shop at my disposal, I made a custom removable floor panel for the rear floor so she doesn't have to lie on the plastic rail for the rear seat supports. I will fab another one for the '18. I really don't care about in-bed speakers but the rest of the vehicle is really nice. And the wife can drive this very easily. For our life style it is just a real good fit.

    It’s funny, I work at a Honda dealership and get weird looks when I say the Ridgeline reminds me of a El Camino as well.
    Some customers do put both generations of Ridgeline models through their paces.
    And like the Honda Fit that get ragged on by enthusiast, the actual owners tend to love their vehicles.

    best review of that vehicle i've seen. publications and bureaucrats like to jam the ridgeline into the mid-size truck category and honda even makes the mistake of trying to compare it to the mid size pickup trucks because they keep getting told that is the segment they are competing in. nobody buying a ridgeline is going to be looking at the mid-size pickups and nobody buying the mid-size pickups is going to be looking at the ridgeline. the ridgeline is not competing with the mid-size pickups. it is the suburban picket fence luxury SUV family mall crawler soccer mom crowd who wants the convenience of a short shallow bed in the back who buys the ridgeline, and that is who their marketing should focus on. that is not a put-down. i understand EXACTLY what they like about that vehicle, but it's just a different universe from the mid-size pickup crowd. it doesn't belong in that segment just because it has a short shallow bed and trucky silhouette. it should be competing with SUV's.

    Literally to make this truck perfect:
    Better MPG
    More off road capable (or off road PKG)
    More aggressive face
    Panoramic roof
    Maybe like 2,000 lbs more towing capability
    Boom. Perfect truck.

    Does it have a frame? no Does it have a v8? no will it primarily drive the rear wheels? no does it have a low range in the transfer case? no. it is a perfect soccer mom truckette. before you guys go off on me, when I lived in the suburbs I had a 2007 RTL for 5 years till Honda gave me a quote of 3200.00 for 4 shocks and a 4 wheel alignment. I drove over to FORD and traded it for a real truck!

    If you’re looking for a stump jumping,rock crawling,yacht pulling,gas guzzling,bone jarring ride,this ain’t it.It’s great for most people who need a light to medium duty vehicle that doesn’t tick the aforementioned boxes.Do not compare this to body on frame trucks in any way except size.It’s very good at what it does.

    Good job with the video editing and review, however, it lacks information on the towing or load carrying capabilities of the Ridgeline, which are two reasons people want a "truck" type vehicle. And there's no comments about after market bed covers, racks for canoe/kayaks etc. that actually make the vehicle useful for those family activities that demand a cruck. Would be nice to see that info in a classy review like this one.

    • @AutoAcademics
      @AutoAcademics  6 лет назад +1

      We appreciate your comments, WakeUpAmerican000s, and agree that towing and payload could have been included since this vehicle does have a bed. We typically only talk about the features that come on the vehicles from the factory, as the inclusion of accessories/third party add-ons might make the video a bit too long, but we'll definitely take that into consideration, as well. Thanks for watching!

    Couple things... If you are 6'6" Honda cut back on leg room from the original. There is not an open feeling sitting in it like the original, it seems much smaller, but it's about a foot longer outside. The clearance is only 8", going to be plowing some with the front end on moderate dirt roads with gullies. They have one at the dealership waiting for me, (Just like this one, with it was just plane old white) I'm still not sure. ...Been in my 2006 since it was new.

    • @AutoAcademics
      @AutoAcademics  7 лет назад

      Sorry for the delayed reply, Mike Ketterman. What did you end up doing? The 2017 Ridgeline is not a full-fledged pickup truck, but it will do what 80 percent of buyers need it to do. For comparison sake, a Mercedes GLE without the Offroad drive mode has only 6.7 inches of ground clearance, yet some would argue that is more of an SUV/truck than the Ridgeline. A base Tacoma only has 7.9 inches of clearance. Just a little perspective. Thank you for your comments and for watching, and let us know if you decided to get one. We'd love to hear your thoughts!

    Great review. I think Honda has a niche pickup that will work. This is for people want the functionality of a midsize pickup but comfort of a sedan. Also, the current Pilot's styling looks too much like the Odyssey.

    Im driving a 2003 Tacoma and its miles are getting high, too high. The New Tacoma is HUGE.. I HATE IT... I might as well buy a FULL SIZED DODGE D4500 or something like that. I wish the Ridgeline was a bit smaller.. somehow. My 4 door tacoma is perfect size for me, hauling, parking in town and fits in my garage, with walk around space when needed.
    Honda, you're very close... but save off 10-15% all around and its perfect for me.

    It’s less truck like than the last one. I’m curious to see how this will evolve. I think it would be cool if it was more truck like in the interior. It makes me wonder who their target market is.

      He said at the beginning what their market is: people who may need a truck occasionally but don’t want to drive a truck every day.
