I am in the market for a mid sized truck. So far, I love the Tacoma for all of its "Truckness" but you are dead on in your assessment about the seats. They are horrible (I am 6'2") I cannot get comfortable at all. I just test drove one over the weekend and then went right after to the Honda dealer and got in a Ridgeline. What a difference! I find the Ridgeline much more comfortable. I am torn between it and the Canyon. I am favoring the Honda due to its reliability factor and am concerned about GM's in that regard.
Nice review, I drove the Tacoma and Ridgeline. The Tacoma drives like a truck, I felt more comfortable in the Ridgeline and agree it drives more like a SUV. Im not a big off road guy so Im not sure the Tacoma made a lot of sense for me, good truck though. I ended up buying the Ridgeline. FYI, the ridgeline, pilot, and oddessey have always shared platform and design language. And Honda listened to their customers in adding the truck for those of us that didn't want another brand for truck needs. Not meant for heavy duty work, Towing, or off-roading. For us it's the perfect truck. even getting a f-150, or competition, unless you spec it, barely tow more.
The first reviewer that honestly addresses the back seat lack of comfort and space - thanks for doing that instead of just saying "it's super comfy!!!!" Even though you can tell the reviewer looks stuffed in the back seat. Us family folk *need space* Bonus points for addressing lack of door opening width.
Other reviews say its roomy because they are comparing it to trucks and not suvs or vans. Its roomy (prob best in class) even compared to the upper class bigger trucks. Also IIHS gave it the best safety rating of any truck so if you are looking for a truck for the family it is prob you best bet unless safety isn't that important.
Hi Shane. The top safety pick nod from the IIHS (as mentioned in the review) is a huge plus for families but a tight second row is a tight second row. And there are larger pick-ups, think the 2.7-L F-150 with a Supercrew cab, that can achieve comparable fuel economy and top scores from the IIHS with a far more spacious second row. Don't get me wrong, I really like this truck but the numbers don't lie. It will be tight for families. Thanks for watching and for writing.
Thanks +Riyad Kalla. +Family Wheels I liked your focus on it being a good deal. IMO the best truck deal on the market. Even if I was considering a full size more spacious F-150 for my family it is a big price difference when you add similar features. When I would load the truck up with my family it might be tighter in the Ridgeline but at least I still have a lockable trunk I can put my stroller and other stuff. I know, I know you can always get a cap for the back of the f150, but that defeats the point of having the bed in my view. The truck definitely has it flaws, but if we are comparing apples to apples or midsizes to midsizes most agree it stands out above the rest. If you want to compare it to the f150 then the sky is the limit to what you can spend and get on one of them. Thanks for replying back.
I cross shopped the F150 and the Ridgeline using the Price as the basis. The Ford had way more space and power but it was just too big for a family vehicle... it was like driving a bus around. The Ford was nice to drive until the road got rough then it crashed and banged over the same roads the Ridgeline glided over. My wife of it into perspective for me... she asked when you have a craving for Doritos and the convenience store is out of stock are you satisfied with a really big bag of genetic potato chips? (I happen to like Doritos) The Ford was the genetic potato chips... plenty there but not what I wanted. :)
Down in the States, you can only get all the driver assist safety features if you buy the top of the line RTL-E or Black Edition. You have to spend more than $40k US to get these features. Not sure why they would offer them on lower trim levels in Canada and not in the US?
I think this is going to be my next vehicle, while i do want a big capable half ton truck that can off road, i live in the suburbs and would really never use half the features I pay for. THis is perfect for driving and city activities with the occasional hardware store run and road trip and maybe a small trailer. Thanks for a great video. Subscribed!
We drive a 2012 CRV LX AWD and wished it had more towing capacity. The Ridgeline base model with AWD would be perfect for towing our motor cycles across state lines. It's a tough sell with the touch screen infotainment system on the higher up trim levels. I like basic simple controls that when wearing gloves are still easy to access when cold out. Thanks for the review :)
I hear about no volume knob in every Honda everybody tests. You don't need a volume knob you have steering wheel controls for volume and radio functions. My civic has a volume knob on the radio I never used it. I have steering wheel controls. Another way of looking at it knobs get broken off over time.
I have a 2013 MKX and it have a touch volume slider and steering wheel controls. I have used the volume slider a few times and it sucks. The steering wheel controls work just fine for me.
Really like this truck. Totally agree with your list of gripes, however, this vehicles advantages far outshine the fairly small shortcomings, IMHO. Your comment on the LX trim being your favourite option is interesting, especially considering the infotainment system would have a volume knob in that case :-) A bit of constructive criticism for you (only because your vid was good enough to merit it) I disagree with your analysis of the interior space. You mention it has the least amount of legroom of any crew cab, I have to think that you must be comparing to full sized trucks because this truck has by far the most room as compared to the GM twins and the Taco. Also, you mention missing "low" transmission function but you forget to touch upon the electronic traction control that addresses half of the drawbacks you mentioned. SUBSCRIBED.
Great to have you subbed, Jonathan. Thanks for chiming in. Yes, I was comparing this across the board for crew cab trucks. Scroll through the comments and you'll see that a lot of people are cross shopping with the likes of the F150... so a different segment but still something buyers are considering. I agree though, the beefs are outweighed by the benefits of the Ridgeline. In fact, it just got our best value of the year award that's getting posted today.
What did you think of the blue?? I know colour is subjective but sometimes a different colour is just wrong, or just right. I'm on the fence, dark grey or blue for mine which is on order.
The wonderful Ridgeline was all-new... in 2017. It's had minor changes since then, including a 2021 facelift that also added... a volume knob! Would love to review a fully revamped Ridgeline. Thanks for watching!
I really like the looks of this truck. Outside of a more rounded front end, it's really not that much different then other trucks. I also like the interior. It's less cluttered then other trucks and has a nice flow. My wife and I are looking into getting one. Perfect for our needs.
I like the Ridgeline and told a friend about it cause he's into Antique shopping and would make a handy little truck for its storage. it's amazing what you can do with it plus it can tow maximum 5,000 lbs. For myself I still need a 8' box or a minimum of six feet to have on the job site. I barely tow with my 5 litre engine but I do carry lots of weight up these mountain roads on Van Isle. Thanks for the review and enjoy your Polar Vortex lol.
Yes, and it's these two scenarios that I'm talking about here, Stephen. Ridgeline as a work truck? Probably not. Ridgeline for antiquing or weekend gardeners? Absolutely! Thanks for watching.
I was primarily looking at the F150 and set to get one but could not convince my girlfriend, and since she'll be driving the truck from time to time had to find something that would work for us both. She feels so much more comfortable in the Ridgeline that on the numerous test drives we took in the F150. The Ridgeline is our third vehicle and bought it primarily to tow our 17' Casita travel trailer, which it does a really nice job and seems to be paired up perfectly. The one thing I am not too pleased about are options to carry my Hobie Pro Angler kayak while towing our trailer. Honda does not recommend using a Thule rack system on the roof other than using their factory rails and rack, which we did not get on our RTL-T. No manufactures have developed a bed rack system yet since the rails of the bed are not conventional. Overall, we are quite pleased with the ride quality, fit and finish, and the towing capability.
Nice detailed review. The "truck" aspect of this vehicle meets my needs as I want the bed but don't do anything crazy with it. Where I have issues with it is the price tag Honda is asking for the apparent lack of being comfortable (especially in the back) and lack of Tech. I am in the states and wish I could get a hold of a Canada version... so many more useful items equipped on the Canada versions.
just found your channel today, wasn't looking for a new channel to sub to as I already have too many but I couldn't resist. love some of your more creative points and the fact that you use a dB meter. any chance on doing a gm/chevy 1500? I'd like to know the dB. great video.
I used to be a big Honda fan I have owned 5 in total. But this Ridgeline embodies all of what I dislike about the brand currently. 1. Not enough room for tall drivers. 2. Lagging on the performance side. 20 miles per gallon is nothing to brag about. 3. The interior looks cheap.
I agree with you on a couple of fronts, Glen. I think the interior finishes felt cheap and looked bland but for a 3.5-L V6 truck we found its fuel economy perfectly respectable and it was pretty peppy too. In terms of space for a tall driver, at 6'2 I was totally comfortable but that left practically no room in the second row for additional passengers.
I have a Great Pyrenees and she would never fit in the back with her bed. I am currently leasing a Ford F150 crew cab.I love it but I feel like its overkill for just the pup and myself. I get awesome gas mileage as well and the power is amazing. But I do feel like Im wasting this trucks abilities.
Oh My if you're almost a ringer for Neil Patrick Harris..... Loved your stuff about the Ridgeline, can you provide the link that you did the long term points good / bad.... we're contemplating one as I type.....
I need to trade in my '09 Ranger extended cab for either the Ridgeline or a Tacoma Double Cab as I've got a baby on the way and can't legally transport her in my Ranger. But, I still want a truck. Anybody have personal experience with the rear facing child seats with this truck? Do they latch in well? I'm seriously considering this over the Tacoma as it has more interior room.
Haven't seen it mentioned, but the 7" touchscreen is only standard on models RTL-T and up, everything else gets a small, 4" display with physical knobs.
Family Wheels ah, had no idea that Canadian ones were different models. Seems like that'd be more difficult than just having the same trims across the board.
I agree the looks are in the eye of the beholder and it is not all that appealing as is the drab interior. In top trim it does get better and when all is said and done it wins out over the competition with quality and peace of mind. Keep up the good work as a fellow Albertan:)
Be aware that the base trim levels lack the acoustic windshield and the additional sound insulation in the floor which is responsible for the very quiet cabin. The base level is much noisier.
Dan, I can't speak with 100% certainty on the 2018 model year because they have made some changes including the elimination of the very lowest trim level. However, I suspect those changes won't affect what we are discussing here. The acoustic windshield comes on RTL trim level and above with additional sound insulation in the flooring on the RTL-T, RTL-E and the Black Edition. I have the RTL and it is a very quiet truck. The higher trims I am told are slightly quieter due to the additional sound insulation in the flooring. Still, my people at Honda with whom I have a business relationship, inform me that the most noticeable reduction in noise is heard when you move up to the RTL. Below that the truck is noticeably noisier due to the lack of the acoustic windshield and other insulation. Above the RTL the truck gets quieter, but not as dramatically as when you from a lower trim to the RTL. I hope this helps.
Thank you for the great review. I am looking at getting this truck and was interested on the rear facing car seat for the baby. How tall is your wife and does she feel cramped in the front? My wife is 5'6 so I'm trying to see if it will be comfortable for her. Thanks!
I honestly think a sliding door on the passenger side would be amazing for loading items and people into the back . Might make everyone think it's less of a truck for that though and more van like . More leg room and maybe a bit longer bed and this would be perfect
Is it much of a hassle getting toddlers in an out? How about older kids (~7 year olds) in booster seats, are they OK on legroom for trips up to 2 hours do you think? We have a minivan and family of 4 (2 year old, newborn) and we'd take the Sienna for trips when it's all of us, I just need to be able to take the toddler in my next car when it's just him and me going out. Newborn will stay with the Sienna. I guess I'm torn between the Ridgeline and full size, either F150 or Tundra. Really don't need the capability of a full size pickup and would prefer the maneuverability and fuel efficiency of the Ridgeline but also don't want it to be a hassle with kids. That's part of why I'm upgrading -- currently in a Honda Fit and it's too small and hurts my back to bend over to get kids in and out. Thanks for your family-oriented review, it's a rare take on cars!
As I noted in the review, the back doors don't swing wide open enough, which was a pain during testing. The back seat is pretty darn good for a small truck but if you're used to a minivan, you'll find it tight. The F-150's supercrew cab is really unparalleled for truck second row space but it sounds like far more truck than you need. Take one for a spin and let us know!
I really like the idea of this truck but can't get pass the look of it . Had they put a more truck like front end on it I'm sure they would sell alot more.
Yes, if we look specifically at midsize trucks. However, there are a lot of larger trucks driving around North American as well that are more used for commuter vehicles than workhorses. It's that trend I'm referring to. Thanks for watching!
I know you criticized the looks, but I disagree. I like the overall look. My only problem is the front end, which doesn't look masculine enough. I know, the pc police will be all over me for that sexist comment. I agree 100% on the back door problem. I don't understand why Honda did this, as from what I have read, the Pilot door opens wider. I have owned this vehicle for about 14 months, and overall, I would give it an A-.
I bought a Ridgeline in 2007 and I LOVE it. It has a unique look, which some don't like, but I did from first sight. I'm due for a new one, but I'm not convinced on the looks. I have test driven the black edition and the RTL-E. I liked the RTL-E better. The ride, acceleration, MPG is better than my 2007 and the big "BUT", I'm not sold on the looks. I'm still in the deciding stage......maybe it will grow on me I agree with no radio knobs and the touch screen shows finger prints and dust too easy, even after cleaning with a screen cloth. I didn't notice if it didn't have an outside temp reading....I'll have to check on that item Not sure I want to trade my 2007 for a 2017 Signed----> undecided
Great Video but.... Your family needs you so please keep your eyes on the road! Drives me crazy and takes away from really enjoying the video! Thanks. Great job!
I like it and considering for my family..However I wish it had an 2 inches more on ground clearance and maybe a tiptronic..otherwise i like the other nice features like the truck bed storage and the folding rear seats

When I was showing my wife my choices for midsize trucks she took a look at the Ridgeline and said.....you are NOT getting that ugly thing! LMAO!! Tacoma it is. They need to square up the nose.
Well, I guess that's decided for you then, isn't it?! Agreed, it is a very odd looking truck but hits a great niche with some excellent value compared to the Taco.
Family Wheels Yes I liked a few things about the truck like all wheel drive, the trunk under the bed, the mpg's, and the nice interior. But lets man the thing up a little and give it some squareness. Good review as usual.
D.A. Arthur I couldn’t agree more. We need to tell all of the engineers that design planes and cars and motorbikes and all of the professional bicyclists and rocket designers and etc, etc that we need MORE wind resistance. We need to be less efficient and burn more energy. That’s just common sense.
Please do not buy this junk, Honda insult us as consumer to invent this junk that their engineer copy from Subaru car that look like pickup . We as consumer needs a real truck not a car. I have a 2012 thinking the 2016 ridgeline will be better then the 2012. I'M very disappointed of Honda manufactured . Please do not buy any latest ridgeline from them.

Need a review of the 22 Ridgeline :)
Family Wheels I liked almost everything else except no buttons for the radio, I guess I'm not young enough to master the touchscreen yet!
Stephen Bradley you can buy one without the touch screen and then it has a volume knob.
Not in Canada. The 7 inch touch screen is standard here: honda.ca/ridgeline/trims
I hate touch screens, I have a blackberry with buttons so I don't have to use one!
this dude is crazy.. this is a great looking truck
So glad I found this channel, great work.
Great points from an owner. Thanks for watching!
Wow, I'm glad I've found your channel, what a great review!
Great to have you watching, Cody. Thanks!
just found your channel today, wasn't looking for a new channel to sub to as I already have too many but I couldn't resist. love some of your more creative points and the fact that you use a dB meter. any chance on doing a gm/chevy 1500? I'd like to know the dB. great video.
Great to have your sub, Larry. Thanks for watching. GM doesn't send many media vehicles out this way but I'll see if I'm able to wrangle one.
Which one do u think have a better rear passenger space/leg room/family space tacoma or ridgeline?
damian smith Ridgeline has a more usable second row.
How about vs the Canyon/Colorado with regards to rear seat room?
??? read much??
might want to work on those skills then
Go buy a Tacoma then!
I’m pretty sure the gear selecter for the tiptronic is on the left side of the lever.
Very nice and practical review.
Thanks, Alex!
Oh My if you're almost a ringer for Neil Patrick Harris..... Loved your stuff about the Ridgeline, can you provide the link that you did the long term points good / bad.... we're contemplating one as I type.....
Such a shame you stopped making content. Maybe it’s time you came back! ???
I need to trade in my '09 Ranger extended cab for either the Ridgeline or a Tacoma Double Cab as I've got a baby on the way and can't legally transport her in my Ranger. But, I still want a truck. Anybody have personal experience with the rear facing child seats with this truck? Do they latch in well? I'm seriously considering this over the Tacoma as it has more interior room.
Haven't seen it mentioned, but the 7" touchscreen is only standard on models RTL-T and up, everything else gets a small, 4" display with physical knobs.
The 7 inch screen is standard on all trims in Canada: honda.ca/ridgeline/trims
Family Wheels ah, had no idea that Canadian ones were different models. Seems like that'd be more difficult than just having the same trims across the board.
I agree the looks are in the eye of the beholder and it is not all that appealing as is the drab interior. In top trim it does get better and when all is said and done it wins out over the competition with quality and peace of mind. Keep up the good work as a fellow Albertan:)
Thanks for watching, Troy. Keep warm!
Be aware that the base trim levels lack the acoustic windshield and the additional sound insulation in the floor which is responsible for the very quiet cabin. The base level is much noisier.
Frank Trainor what trim levels have the acoustic windshield and extra sound dampening?
Thanks!
My wife is 5'7 and had room with a rear facing car seat. Hope that helps!
The lines are efficient and clean. I like the look of this vehicle and would purchase the baseline model.
Its a GENTLEMAN'S truck. Love it
I'm considering to buy Ridgeline but the base price is a bit high here in state
Very nice. ....sure would love to own one.
The fact that it is a Pilot with a pickup bed is what I like about it. Why not just put the rear facing car seat in the middle seat position?
I honestly think a sliding door on the passenger side would be amazing for loading items and people into the back . Might make everyone think it's less of a truck for that though and more van like . More leg room and maybe a bit longer bed and this would be perfect
Then it becomes a Honda Element with a BED too!
I like that color blue for 2017
Is it much of a hassle getting toddlers in an out?
Xitomatl Seriously, did you watch the video? He addressed those issues.
I really like the idea of this truck but can't get pass the look of it . Had they put a more truck like front end on it I'm sure they would sell alot more.
I own a BE... did you ever get the chance to use D4 ? (press the button on the shift knob)
Nice review BTW :)
Thanks for watching. I turned on D4 but the conditions didn't need it. How well does it work?
It might have addressed your issue you mentioned about engine braking at highway speeds - it works well for me :)
I saw that Alberta plate. Calgary?
Nice review, thank you.
Thanks for watching, Dan.
Only 6% of the midsize segment tow more than 5000 pounds.
Midsize pick up segment*
Yes, if we look specifically at midsize trucks. However, there are a lot of larger trucks driving around North American as well that are more used for commuter vehicles than workhorses. It's that trend I'm referring to. Thanks for watching!
Fadic 4 i've seen a ridgeline tow over 7000 lbs!
I bought my 2017 today for 15500! lmao!!!
I know you criticized the looks, but I disagree. I like the overall look. My only problem is
the front end, which doesn't look masculine enough. I know, the pc police will be all over me for
that sexist comment. I agree 100% on the back door problem. I don't understand why Honda did
this, as from what I have read, the Pilot door opens wider. I have owned this vehicle for about 14
months, and overall, I would give it an A-.
It’s a nice looking Ute it’s perfect for city folks
I bought a Ridgeline in 2007 and I LOVE it. It has a unique look, which some don't like, but I did from first sight. I'm due for a new one, but I'm not convinced on the looks. I have test driven the black edition and the RTL-E. I liked the RTL-E better. The ride, acceleration, MPG is better than my 2007 and the big "BUT", I'm not sold on the looks. I'm still in the deciding stage......maybe it will grow on me
I agree with no radio knobs and the touch screen shows finger prints and dust too easy, even after cleaning with a screen cloth.
I didn't notice if it didn't have an outside temp reading....I'll have to check on that item
Not sure I want to trade my 2007 for a 2017
Signed----> undecided
Thanks for watching, Dean. Let us know what you decide on!
I would have a problem as far as comfort other than that it’s a nice ride .
I see that you put a lot of effort to create your reviews from the redness of your nose and ear.thanks and respect.great review.hope you get more subscribers you deserve.
Haha... thank you! It was a chilly week as you've noted by my rosy cheeks. Bring on the subscribers!
Paul doesn't realize how cold it gets in Canada yet in January and February... :)
my 2014 civic ex has outside temp gauge.. really honda...
Not sure how it is in Canada, but in the US, every model has the ambient temp readout
I will have that truck shiped from Canada to texas
Meh. Alex on autos gives wayyyyyyyy better reviews.
Honda failed to make a unique interior.
Yep, that was a disappointment for us, too. But overall, it's still a great little truck.
JUKEBOXX1990 It has a Pilot interior. Same way the Silverado has a Tahoe interior.
Martyn Rosenburg and the Silverado failed in that aspect too.
The first ridgeline was a disaster and this one may place it where it belongs; in the coffin.
What do you suggest then?
I am loving my 2019 Rodgeline. Fits my needs perfectly!
South Hill How long did you own yours?
Please do not buy this junk, Honda insult us as consumer to invent this junk that their engineer copy from Subaru car that look like pickup . We as consumer needs a real truck not a car. I have a 2012 thinking the 2016 ridgeline will be better then the 2012. I'M very disappointed of Honda manufactured . Please do not buy any latest ridgeline from them.
Why do you care if others buy this...just don't bur one for yourself?
Bruce Fredrickson because Honda is charging consumers thousands of dollars for a copy of a Subaru Baja car. Google it and you'll be upset once you see it. I like the 2006-2014 but you could tell they engineer didn't put any effort on latest models plus its looks like crap.
The Baja was a ridiculous vehicle with a tiny bed. Note, that they did not sell them very long. To compare the two is silly.
Sir, you have a serious problem worrying about what others like. You are the problem with the world
