Is This Really the BEST Watch Under $100? | Seiko SNK809 Review
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 12 авг 2024
- Is the Seiko SNK809 really the best watch under $100? Well, yeah...it might be, especially if you want an automatic watch and prefer a slightly smaller size (37mm to be exact).
In this video, we'll talk about what makes the legendary SNK809 so popular and desirable, and of course, we'll cover its downsides too (although these are easy to look past).

Oh hey! Like I mention in the video, the price of this watch fluctuates a bit, but it's pretty much always under $100 on either Amason or Jomashop. You can check both here (affiliate links):
SNK809 on Amazon - amzn.to/30yv5BB
SNK809 on Jomashop - fave.co/30vT2JI
In the hours since you posted this Video Amazon have increased the price to $115.00 !
@@markstewart1522 $167.13 from that link right now! I looked at these for a while and I found them kind of hard to find under $100. All of the flavors are well north of $100 at this moment on Amazon. I ended up only paying $75 from Jomashop through ebay.
Link for the strap?
The same thing also happened to me, I bought this bad boy when I started wearing automatic watch. I bought it at Rp 950.000 (about $80-$90 at that time), been wearing it for a few months and I decided to sell it, then I bought a Seiko Prospex as a replacement. When I sold this Seiko 5, the new price became slightly expensive
I’ve had this watch for a couple years now, and it’s serving me really well. It’s so cool to think about an object keeping time without batteries, especially in this day and age.
I agree. For me it's got to be an auto or solar, or I won't have it. Atomic time would make it a must have.
@Sleeping I think it's about the watch being self-sufficient... The thought of it needing no replacement or anything done to keep running for decades is fascinating.
How accurate is it?
Gave mine away to a friend (who just started having an interest in watches). Missed it after less than a month and ordered another one.
I loved mine. Someone else loved it so much they stole it. I finally bought a new one to replace it.
where did you order it frmo? cant seem to find on the seiko website. TIA

I have the 807 (blue). I feel like all the product photos make it look like the blue is super bright. It’s much more subtle in person. Love it. Great watch. 10/10 for me.
I brought my wife to a watch store and got myself a black and a beige for her 4 years ago and it's been my daily driver watch.
I had Rolexes I had Omegas but this is the watch i have massive sellers remorse! 😭
My seiko SNK809 runs at -2 seconds a day! Absolutely love it! Definitely am going to get a new strap though lol
Do you correct it daily?
I love this watch! I have the green and cream dials and, as you suggested, I bought a brown leather strap and a couple of striped nato straps to replace the factory canvas straps. The watches look great!
I have the SNK803 with the cream dial. So many different straps look great on it, absolutely love it !
Bought this one second hand a couple months ago for 20$, it’s such a good and easy to wear watch! Nice video Brock and thanks for that strap recommendation 👍🏼
Thank you for the video- I love the blue, green and tan colors of this watch!!! Also, very nice haircut/style, super Mr. Brock!!! :D
I've had my watch for 5 yrs come Jan 2021. I kept the stock strap as is until now. I used your link to amazon and bought the Black Sailcloth strap. Thank you.
It’s funny that people hate on this stock strap… I’ve tried lots of alternatives… and hate them all, including Barton. And I just like the stock one best. Similarly same as stock jubilee for the skx. Every video says it’s to “jingly” and cheap… I’ve tried all the alternatives and it’s the most comfortable. Can’t beat it
My snk 809 has been rock solid for one year now.I let the watch run down until it stops then when you just pull the crown out the second hand starts making an accurate hack for reference. It loses one and a half seconds a day but when I take it off at night I lay it down facing up and it catches back up to the tee.Im a drummer and mountain biker it takes a beating and I love it... good value good looks
I wear it every day. I had it on a black leather strap initially then switched to a dark brown leather strap when I saw some images on Google. It looks terrific. Occasionally it will move ahead about 2 minutes and I will either leave it or adjust it when I have to reset the date on months with only 30 days, but no other issues. Overall a great watch. 👍🏻
I have had my SNK809 for over 8 years now and It's been a fantastic watch very accurate and runs great! I'm glad they haven't updated it, although a hacking movt. and sapphire would be a plus the price would probably double and aesthetically it perfect for what it is. I like that $100 price because it so accessible and a great investment as well. The hamilton khaki is very similar but at the $200-300 range it's also a great watch and value. Thanks for the Video.
What is the "hacking movt." means?
@@uuuultra the hacking movement feature will have the seconds hand and movement stop completely, this allows you to set the time more accurately on the watch.
Hey man, have you gotten it serviced yet? I've had it for 2 years now and I'm wondering if it's necessary to get it serviced, provided that no major damage is done to it.
I put a 4R36 in one and it's a 10x better watch now.
@@salty_terminal_civilian5374
Wow.. I wish I know how to do that.
I've owned a SNK809 for a couple of years and I love it. It is considered a field watch but to me it looks a feels more like a hybrid between a field watch and a Flieger. Definitely a must own for Seiko and military watch lovers.
I bought an SNK809 with the bracelet earlier this year for $85, great mechanical watch for the price. I would encourage people to send the extra money to get the bracelet version, it's the most comfortable Seiko bracelet that I've worn.
I recently convinced my dad to get one as well as an Orient tri star. He got both in black while I got the green Seiko, which is the cheapest(despite in my opinion being the second most common I see and the best looking due to the green being much more subdued than in photos), and a white dial tri star. Lovin both so far. I just wish I could find day/date wheels to match the olive drab dial similar to the black day/date wheels of the the black dial.
Another great video, thanks brock my man. Keep safe. 🙂
I'm considering this one as my first mechanical watch and honestly, I love the way it's dial looks.
I have 2 of these; Olive, & Khaki. I cansider it a traditional field watch & attach a compass. Yes that strap is rough.
I got nylon, & nato straps to replace.
I still have the first Seiko (movement) watch from 1986! Only replaced the strap. Went with "twist o flex" for a while, cut switched to silicone.
Great review, thanks. I bought the watch and strap you recommended.
as a man who owns the beige dialed version, i can definitely say it is one of the greatest bang for the buck! probably the easiest to recommend as anyone's first automatic. you can change the look easily by changing out the straps, or even modding them, such as putting on a domed crystal, polishing the case, etc. great video!
I have this watch and since I bought in the UAE, the day complication has English & Arabic which is really cool. Its my 'being at home watch. Really love it!
I got this for 50$ a couple of years ago and it's been awesome considering it's price. I like automatics and smaller ones at that and this fit the bill. I put it on a NATO and its been great.
I think Seiko has the best value for its price
The best watches i ever got for $100 or less were in the used market. the tissot pr 50 and the citizen 6100 dress watch.
They both look like the rolex explorer and datejust respectively but still have their own design cues.
I have been wearing the SNK803 (cream colorway) as a daily driver for about 6 months and am really happy with it. With the low power reserve, yes perfect for that role. I did hate the strap, replaced with smooth slab style leather in cinnamon brown and it really sets off the dial. I have a small wrist and anything 40mm or above is hard to wear for me, agree the small crown at 4 is a very nice fit but the stem is tough to access for larger fingers.
Great 1st watch. I have a lot of watches but I find for day to day this is what I gravitate to 95% of the time. It’s a ton of watch for >$100, I bought mine for $65 on Amazon.
My grandma just bought one for my graduation next month. I'm very excited for it
I may have been bitten by the fashion bug recently (a little bit) 😅
First I got a cheap but surprisingly nice classic Casio whose brown & blue color combination matches my business-casual outfit perfectly (which BTW your business-casual video helped with choosing, thanks again for that).
Then I wanted something less formal, and SNK809 would've been perfect for that, except it's not sold in my country anymore, and it's very hard and expensive to order from abroad.
Luckily, I stumbled upon a 50% Jacques Lemans sale in a local store, so I got a JL 1-1117.1WR for half the price, which is pretty much what SNK809 would've been (around $100).
Keep up the good work! 👍
I feel you! r/watches is a place to get lost into and you end up building a wishlist of watches you cannot afford. Being said that it does give you inspiration and ideas for your next watch upgrade or in general a much wider lens of understanding and and a different perspective of what style of watches you personally prefer. I've seen (subjectively) ugly watches being praised to death by the poster, it really shows how personal style and taste varies so much when it comes to watches. And really makes you understand its more than just the looks of the watch that one falls in love with.
So about SNK809, great straightforward review! Its not just SNK809, almost all Seiko 5 sure are the most 'bang-for-the-buck' kind of watches. Also to note, if you do some more research many of the Seiko 5 watches can be modded to make them look nothing like a stock Seiko 5 watch. So if someone really loves mechanical watches and would dive into making their own style of mechanical watch, Seiko 5 is worth doing more research on.
P.S. : Mine being a standard (small) wrist 37-40mm appeals to me. 42mm feels like a big watch, not sure I would ever go beyond 42mm. I am glad watch community and the makers are not just leaning towards making big and bigger watches only like smartphone makers are. I am glad the watch industry is far too uptight regarding legacy, prestige and brand's history.
Great review! Ordered one from Amazon this morning with my stimulus money as a belated birthday present to myself. This will be my first automatic watch. Can't wait for it to get here!
Hope you love it!
Bought this watch [807] in blue a year ago. Worth every penny. Seiko is great. Also the lume is awesome on it.
I remember wanting this watch a few years ago but then I got gifted a gift watch. I have been looking for a everyday casual watch. It sucks it’s no long the 60$ it used to be
I’ve been looking for an automatic daily driver I’ve been obsessed with watches since I was a kid but last year i finally started collecting it’s been a journey and this was recommended to be my first pickup. I should have listened. All the reviews online were a couple years old but it was nice to get a recent review. Mine arrived today!
Side note the second language on mine was Arabic. Was hoping it would be French as that’s my second language.
Nice, enjoy it!
It's a great everyday work watch. Im in the concrete industry so having a smaller field watch is great.
Nice feedback thanks, I'm a gardener and have been looking for a smaller sized field watch. My concern was if it can handle dust/soil and a bit of water from irrigation systems.
Hey your vids really helping us i believe. My humble request is can you list all the things you ask tailors to tailor each different kind of wear
Love the review!
I just got mine today! This review really did convince me it was a good buy. The only different thing is that its an 807 and not the 809. $85.
This was my entry watch for automatic. Bought it ten years ago, lost it for 2 years found it in the house and lost it again . It's been 4 years . Hopefully still somewhere in the house .
Check deep in the couch.
@@psilocybin1491 already , like the zillionth times . 😂😂😂😂
Thank you for the inputs 🙂🙏🙏
Bought mine back in 2011 “snk803” from a watch store in Dubai, I guess it’s a Love at first sight. Needs calibration coz it add like 5 min a day now
I really like the stock strap on my 805, I just wish it was longer. I now use a similar color Zulu strap and sometimes a NATO when I'm in the mood for it. WR 30M is totally fine for my lifestyle and wear it daily. If I know I'm getting in the wet I'll throw on my Citizen Chandler Field Watch.
I’ve recently made a much needed purchase of this Seiko (in green the 805) watch because all the batteries have expired in my small collection of quartz watches including 2 Tag Heuer one of which I’ve had for 30+ years & both still kept perfect time. As at March 2021 we’re in our 3rd COVID lockdown since a year ago here in the UK 🇬🇧. All the jewellers are shut so I’m unable to get the batteries replaced yet.
My main requirements for this particular purchase is that I can read the time without having to use my spectacles, I love a day/date function, a second hand and I haven’t got a green watch.
I know I can use my Samsung phone for the time and date but when I’m walking my dog or horse riding it’s much quicker to look at my wristwatch rather that’s faffing around with my phone and risking dropping it.
I’ve had this Seiko watch for 3 weeks now and have found that I need to reset it only once a week because it is -30 seconds, which for me is good enough and btw., I like the original strap which has become softer and flexible now, I don’t think that I will change the strap because I like the Seiko brushed hardware which is in keeping with the watch bezel.
I may buy a blue one later this year.🙂🇬🇧
Looking to buy a green one and put it on a leather nato. Nice video, thanks. Been looking at this as a beater for a long time. I'll probably put a 4R36 in it and sapphire crystal. I want it to last for a long time.
I'm going nuts with the new Seiko "Captain Willard". It's not that small and not that cheap, but the fact that it was worn by Martin Sheen in Apocalypse Now makes it one of the coolest dive watches around.
My snk809 is super accurate. I don’t know exactly how accurate but I notice that unlike my other auto, the snk809 is just always right on even after weeks of wear. I thought it was too small for the longest time but I dug it out and suddenly I find the size to be perfect on my 6.5 wrist
what I absolutely love about this watch is that the minutes are marked on the outermost part of the dial, and the hours are marked on the inner side. the minutes take precedent. so you read it the way you tell time: "45mins past 5".
Ah yes! The Type-B flieger style on this little field watch. I love that too.
I have one on my wrist with a NATO strap. It works wonderfully and except when I go swimming I almost never need to think about it. Spent a little more to get the steel band so i have at least one decent strap, might get a leather later on.
I don't wear watches aside from a pocket swatch when I wear three piece suited, but this one I would probably get.
have this one and the cream colored dial version, love the black dial and 37mm diameter dont want big ben on my wrist.one day it just went 10 minutes a day took the back off regulated it,now it runs right on the minute.the cream version is just sitting in my dresser, one day i think will wear it.
I prefer the look of the SNK809K1 with the steel bracelet. I kind of regret getting rid of it. Nice review
Love this watch, it's simple, beautiful and light weight. It's dial and case size are the two key sellers.
I have the snk 803 beige dial with olive green nato. Love it
A great watch. I own it in the 42MM variant, and that version is 100 meters WR. It's more expensive, but worth it if the 37MM is too small...
I wear this watch on an olive green perlon strap almost every day.
I gave two as gifts and have one for myself!
Reading this with mine on the wrist. Let me tell you: I spent more than what I paid for the watch on a sapphire crystal for it. Because this little seiko deserves it. Get it on a leather strap tho. An important design detail they got right and other higher-end pieces miss: The day-date complication is the same color as the rest of the dial (white on black). So despite being small it doesn't feel too crowded. I love it.
The 809 is the way to go in this series as it's the only one with the matching day/date wheel. The beige, blue and green dials come with white day/date wheels, and it does busy up an already crowded dial.
I wear an SNK809 on a brown/tan leather strap. It's a great watch, although looks a little under sized on my 7inch wrist.
That's a realistic choice! Perfect pick.
I Have it as well. Love the size for everyday wear
I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on the new Seiko 5.
Nice review. I've been eyeing the Hamilton Khaki, but I hear the lugs stick out a bit more making it fit large. This one looks like it may fit better. I also like the recessed crown.
Yeah the lug-to-lug and big crown of the Khaki make it a much bulkier watch.
If you want a hassle free non automatic version, check out the Citizen BM8180, also a 37mm watch but the styling is more of a Flieger type A and a bit over USD100. It houses an ecodrive movement and watch will run as long as there is light.
I would 100% have this watch in my collection, but alas it's just too small for me. Brilliant for the money though, i love that Flieger B style dial
After 3 months of you tube surfing. I ordered the Blue One today. I'm really psyched that I did.
me too!!!
The first 16 seconds: the story of my life :D
i bought snk809 and also orient3 tristar . they are such wonderful beginner automatic watches. 3
Bought the exact same watch on may and it stopped working this week. Can't even return it now. My other Seiko SNkl23 been working like a dream for about 8 years without a single problem.
That's just a dud movement. You realise your other watch has the same movement and the snk model number refers to case, dial etc right? I.eparts that have nothing to do with reliability of the movement.
I just bought this watch and the nylon strap on Amazon, thanks to this video. I've been wanting to buy this watch for some time, btw today is my bday.
Who cares
I bought one 4 years ago at $60 and exceeds beyond my expectations. I made a wise decision. Truly, this watch is a daily beater and it just refuse to die.
Awesome!
This is a great value, but I hate the non-hacking issue... I suppose one could retrofit an NH36 movement
My house was broken into a few years back and the thief stole mine. Got mine for about $70.
It’s good for the money, but it’s a bit thick for a small dial. It wears surprisingly small for 37mm. I have a 6 1/8” wrist. If it were a bit thinner (ditch the exhibition case back?) and it’d be much better
Is there really a piece of dust between the glass and the dial? I can always spot them on the close shoots in different places.
I have this watch. IT'S BADASS.
Yep im saving money for this baby
Seiko 5 sure has great value. Scored myself a SNXS79 for $80, money well spent 🤙🏻
Is it comfortable with that band ? Does it get sweaty?
where else can you get a mid size automatic, bead blasted case field watch for something below USD100?

Round ups are better in my opinion but I would be happier if you review individual watches that are the most requested from those roundup videos
I'm wearing mine right now with a NATO strap. I personally love the size of this watch and wish there were more watches between 37 and 39mm.
I've also ordered a DD Sapphire with Blue AR for it and will be changing it out next week. Its one of the nice things about popular Seiko watches, even the cheap ones, you can always mod them.
As far as things I don't like so much, I do wish the hands were a little longer and its my only watch that doesn't hand winding and one of two that don't have hacking. I may look into swapping the movement out for the NH36A.
I think there is a red dial version, an Amazon limited edition that is very rare
im having hard time finding short strap. my wrist is only 5.8 inch. the only option is to have a custom strap but that's expensive.
Erm, the Barton canvas/leather strap you suggest there is way less comfortable that the original strap.
it's the 17 th March 2023, and this watch is £159.00 in England, in most stores, give or take five pounds. Thanks for the video.
I swam with the SNK809 several times and never a problem. Seiko tests their watches beyond their specified depth ratings. Trust them, enjoy them, and take them to their limits!
Is it one of the newer ones that just says water resistant on the back?
Looking forward to seeing your take on the best dress watch under $100 or $200

Yes, it will fit.
I had a Green One that I destroyed when I was younger now that I’m older and larger I bought a black dial it just seems small on my wrist compared to my Other watches I wear I’ve been wearing G-Shock so long I’ve grown accustomed to larger watches
Watches have definitely gotten bigger and bigger over the decades. I'm glad to see some brands returning to smaller dials.
What K2 mean, in SNK809K2?
I have 4 automatic Seiko's, and this is one of them. I wear it when I am at play with my grandson or something where I might sweat. It is perfect for what it is. You can't go wrong with a Seiko. They have some of the best-looking dials on the market. Grand Seiko's are amazing. This is a great company that has been around for a long time, and they have their S together. I have many other watches as well. Some much higher end. But, I always find myself leaning towards my Seiko's as a daily wear. Be it dressy casual to shorts and a T-shirt.
