Fear of being assaulted is a HUGE fear of a LOT of people. But if I remember the book right (no promises) she had a fear of intimacy or of losing her autonomy to him or anyone.
I just wanted to know why they didnt talk about it. They brushed past it like she didnt have the fear. Thats really why i was confused.

In the books I’m pretty sure they don’t have everyone watching the simulations, just the high ups or something like that. It’s been awhile since I read the books.
Yea and I’m the books when she gets almost pushed over the bridge thing by the guys they actually assault her by grabbing her breasts or something like that. Which would have added to that fear
She breaks him out of the simulation by making him look at her as he’s about to execute her. Remember one of his fears was looking someone in the eye and executing them when he knows they don’t deserve it. She uses one of those core fears of his to remind him of who he is. Their love isn’t what breaks him out of it but his fear and her understanding of fear is what does it.

Finally someone who appriceates this movie. I'm so tired of people saying these movies suck. I read the books and still loved the movies. I wish more people could see how good they are.
For one, people don't understand that portraying a bad society is endorsing it lol. The Hunger Games movies make it obvious how bad the society is (the "good" characters know it's bad! the commoners are shown to live in abject misery! the rich are two dimensional airheads except the supposed master manipulators!). And a lot of people don't buy the premise that people would fit perfectly into those factions. That's why to me, the population had clearly been tampered with. That's a given in many sci fi stories.
I mean i do get if people didn't like these, i just think that explains the I think unreasonable level of negativity.
nah the movies suck ass imo. most of the people who do like it are 12-14 year old girls fangirling over four lmao. the books were actually alright but certainly no hunger games

@@woegy I’ll admit the hunger games was definitely better (books and movies). But it’s all YA in the end. None of it is too complex. I really don’t see what the problem is with these movies. Like what makes it suck? It’s entertaining, good actors, decent storyline, shot well, good mix of action, comedy and romance. I really do fail to see the issue. 🤷♀️I really enjoyed the first two. The third not as much, but I’m still bummed they never finished the series. Oh well…
Agreed! I read the books and I enjoy the films separately. I'm not a big Shailene Woodley fan though, I wish there was another actress but, that is just my opinion! It's still a good series! It sucks that little things are missing but, eh. They have to do that for time and I understand that. It stands alone, just like the Harry Potter films and The Hunger Games films.
Every time I watch this movie I always get 2nd hand embarrassment when they’re watching him trying to assault her. I get that being a fear, I would definitely have that fear but I can’t get over everyone seeing it on the screen.

@@BillyBinges idk as a woman it didn't seem remotely out of the blue to me lol. It's something women are constantly reminded of. (And if they don't constantly remind themselves, they know that people will blame them for anything that happens. I mean even if they do they will be blamed or brushed off. Not only women of course! But they're the ones it's drilled into.) I saw that people commented it's different in the books, but that was my take as someone who didn't read them.
Edit: oh but if you mean why didn't anyone ask if he had assaulted her or something, that's fair, though probably explained by them not giving an eff lol
It was all her fears combined in one, and that was her being strong enough to fight the battle... what my interpretation is 🙆♀️
@@BillyBinges In the books only the dauntless leaders saw the actual entirety of the initiates simulation (including tris’s simulation) while everyone else just saw how she reacted to it. Tbh I don’t know why they portrayed it as assault because she was just afraid of intimacy- in abnegation they don’t show much affection so she was scared of it at first.
So, the story with the test was that an Erudite would use intelligence to deal with the dog, like the “taming” she did at the beginning, an Abnegation would selflessly act to protect the girl like she did after that, but she also tackled the dog to protect her like a “fearless” Dauntless.
One of my pet peeves is that they never explain these key points of a story properly when they adapt a book into a movie. It would've been so easy to add a 10 second voice over of someone explaining this for viewers who never read the books.
@@natb9919 They would have to somehow include it in the story, not just a voice over because that would feel very odd and make the movie less enjoyable. Best choice would be for the girl administering the test to explain that to Tris when she told her that she got multiple factions, I believe that's how they explained it in the book
Isn't it also shorter in the film? It's been a while since I've read the book, but wasn't amity choosing the cheese and dauntless choosing the knife (or at least choosing the cheese would rule out dauntless and choosing the knife would rule out amity). Since she chose neither, it should have ruled out both. Erudite was knowing how to deal with the dog, abnegation was saving the girl (but she did it in a fearless way putting dauntless back in the running), then the scene switched to a man on a bus asking her a question and she lied which ruled out candor. Because of her actions, either the bus scene or a third scene had to be forced by the simulation to try to narrow down the options but it couldn't.
@@natb9919 Perhaps they wanted the audience to just interpret it on their own. Kinda like the Dagobah cave scene in The Empire Strikes Back. Film enthusiasts often complain about movies spoon-feeding exposition rather than trusting the viewers' intelligence.

Her six fears (after she no longer fears intimacy with Four) are: Crows - fear of being powerless/being turned on by her family (her birds tattoo were meant to represent her family), Water tank - being unable to escape, Burned at stake - being taken captive (and fear of Peter), Family getting shot - being the one to kill her family, Getting lost in the ocean - loss of control, Men coming for her in Abnegation - fear of death. The fear landscape usually has a deeper meaning except for phobias. I believe Four’s fear of confinement is a mix of being afraid of being reminded of one of the ways his dad punished him but also not fitting into society cause he “doesn’t fit.”

Definitely do Insurgent then see how you feel. The problem with Allegiant is that it was gonna be a pt. 1 & 2 but they never actually did the second one to conclude the series. So stopping after Insurgent works just as well. Or do all three if you find youre liking the series enough
They should have just finished with allegiant Kate beckinsale geanine was the best part of the first 2 movies along with Tris and four love story

In the books the reason she makes him look her in the eye when he's about to shoot her is because she swapped out the innocent that he had to look away to kill, and he could not kill her at all. And she had a fear of Intimacy because she never even saw her parents kiss once. And NeuroDivergent is where Divergent is where it comes from. One thing they left out of the movie that I *LOVED* in the books, was that She stepped into the ring with Molly (the big one) and beat the tar out of her after they finally managed to make her angry.

i read these books when i was younger! the movies are a preeeeetty good adaptation, especially with the overall mood. i always thought they sold the dystopia aspect really well
I actually was on a team called Team Divergent in middle school and they made us read all of the books, and we went to the theaters to watch each movie when it came out except for Allegiant! It was great times, and those are the only good memories from middle school.

Divergent is so fascinating to look back on. Like, it's a perfect time capsule of the 2010s Dystopian YA Era. It perfectly symbolizes how these films tried to capitalize on the post-Harry Potter and Twilight craze, and Divergent in particular perfectly captures both the genre's meteoric rise and spectacular fall. Like, from the big three, Divergent is the only one dead and buried. There are new Hunger Games books/films and a new Maze Runner sequel series, but Divergent is the only one that NO ONE talks about.

This movie was one of my absolute favorites growing up, especially being a fan of the books. Loved your commentary on all the fight sequences. Theo James is a great actor, and my longest celebrity crush. I was 14 when this came out. As for your question about tattoos: I have 5, 3 of them are symbols from book series that I love, 1 is my favorite Bible verse (Psalm 91), and the last one is the mountains underneath some stars with the quote "women of valor" in Hebrew.
I would say continue the series at your own risk. It does get progressively worse. They stray too far from the books and make a mess of things.

Most of my tattoos are photos of the animals I worked as a zookeeper. My left forearm is Alaskan species, my right forearm is Asian species, my upper left arm is an African elephant, I have a spider web and spider that span my right calf, and left shin currently has a rose vine. But I am designing my African species tattoo that will cover my entire lower leg.
When they tried to throw her over the edge the movie version was tamed down. In the book they actually tried feeling her up beforehand
I really enjoy the books, and read them first. Divergent is an ok adaptation considering the book’s from Tris’s pov and pretty long. After that the movies went off the rails for me. I think the series might do better as a tv series

out of the whole series, i would say this one is definitely the best film. insurgent is also pretty good but generally less engaging (in my opinion) so it's totally up to you and how you're feeling. but i would absolutely not recommend watching the last one. it was so off from the original book plot that they literally couldn't finish the movie series.

I have a great glass door story: my grandma used to have a screen door over the sliding glass door to her backyard but it was damaged and they just took it off right before a big family gathering. We were playing hide and seek outside and I was up a tree and watched my cousin, Jay, come running around the corner from the front yard and slam right into the sliding glass door. He rebounded right to the ground. My brother saw him on the ground from inside and tried to run to him and hit the other side of door. Then my little cousin came running around the corner, saw Jay on the ground and yelled, "I'll get help!" and ran face first into the same door! Meanwhile, I was laughing so hard that I fell out of the tree. This all happened in less than a minute but two adults walked into the door later on as well and the screen door was repaired by the end of the day. 🤣🤣
My fave fruit is exactly what you're eating but with blueberries too.
