Just imagine you’ve never found this channel. You stumble across a random video covering a comic you enjoy. You then go to the channel page and unlock the greatest backlog of comics videos available. Including incredible interviews like this one. Great job fellas!
Welcome aboard!
I can't imagine what it must be like for a new viewer of the channel. I've been following the channel almost from inception, and to realize you've got about 1000 hours interesting and insightful footage to go through would make my eyes bleed and all my relationships crumble to dust.
I had the exact same experience! Pretty cool, huh?
Thanks, Ed & Jim!
That's how I found them. Looking Wizzywigg interviews, very early on.
Yup! This channel showed up in my feed 4 or 5 months ago as I was relocating from Ohio back to Florida. Found a local comics shop I like supporting and started reading, writing, and drawing again thanks to Jim and Ed!
One of the greatest interviews on Kayfabe. BKV is so thoughtful about the comics he makes, being equal w his collaborators, honest and emotional about his craft, no pretentions yet a true artist in every way.
Concrete: Think Like a Mountain is the miniseries BKV referred to guys. Concrete tried not to drown while walking underwater. The miniseries also had killer covers by Geoff Darrow
Wow! I’ve once again learned a helluva lot of great stuff! Please do Concrete! It is so underrated and the best place to start would be the trade of B/W shortstories! Thanks again, guys! Keep reading and making comix!
It's a crime against comics that those B&W digest sized trades are still out of print. Also, I hope Paul finishes up that long gestating new Concrete series before too long!
Brian K. Vaughn's writing is some of the most human I've ever read and you could feel it in this interview. Great stuff!
When Jim proposes the artist's cycle, then BKV picks it up and elaborates on what seems like a gauntlet any professional creative must essentially be prepared to pass through... repeatedly... I smiled SO hard. Then Ed thanks and praises BKV for acknowledging it on behalf of a frustrated audience of creatives? My face almost shattered from the cathartic smilin I was doin.
Huge fan of BKV and J&E, and currently being raked through the coals of self doubt - although hopefully gettin passed 6pm on the creative cycle clock and making my way back to high noon. The night probably isnt technically darkest before the dawn, but it's definitely coldest.
Man Jim Rugg could play Daredevils twin brother. (Wasn't there a weird storyline where Matt Murdock had brother?)
Cool, here in Hungary they just started publishing Papergirls, continued publishing Saga after a hiatus and the complete Y publication has just ended!
BKV! Cleveland Comics! Carol N John's Comic Shop! It's so awesome to hear how big of a comic nerd BKV is! Great interview guys!
Man! Great shoot interview! I’m a cartoonist from central Wisconsin from a rural community and all the talk of the “internalized capitalism” giggle! It touches my heart! I notice the circle roller coaster in my own work and noticed a connection with the Alchemical process.
Thank you guys for your show, especially this one. I’m a comic writer and this is a masterclass on doing the thing by one of the best. Appreciate y’all!
I saw "Shoot Interview" in the title and thought "oh shit brother Brian's about to shoot hard on the Hulkamaniacs, Jack", and low and behold, the channel's name is "Cartoonist Kayfabe. Nice work guys!!1
Yessssssssssss, thank you guys for another Kayfabe video I can rewatch abuse 😂
1:20:38 I used to work in comics back in the 90's and I got comps from Marvel, DC and Image. I used to go through them and find the ones that would be OK for kids. Back then, that meant only 25% of them. I used to give them out on Halloween and I think my house NEVER got egged because of it (that's a big deal in that part of NJ). Also, I have dropped off boxes at children's hospitals. Back then, a lot of them would gladly take any comics that were kid friendly. After that, many Boys and Girls clubs would take age appropriate comics.
Before the pandemic, I used to just have a box of comics I would leave in the kitchen at work - they don't last long at an animation studio.
Loving this to round off my weekend and send me into Monday with some kayfabe juice in my system! Cheers guys.
Dam! Ya'll getting GOATs for interviews! Thank you so much for such great interviews.
Holy Crap. I thought I was the only one who actually read Concrete.
Fantastic interview, can’t wait to check out Exploding Giraffe and the Concrete breakdown.
Cartoonist Kayfabe is the best damn RUclips channel! Been watching when you guys had under 1k subs and its been great from day one!
I grew up in Columbus and didn't know about the Billy Ireland Museum. I even worked at OSU for a couple of years. So disappointed I missed that opportunity. Don't know when I'll be back that way again but I'll be sure to add it to my list of places to visit.
As far as great Concrete mini series to unpack, I recommend Fragile Creature. Chadwick utilizes almost a different inking style for that story and the color is more "poppy" than anything else in the series. Think Like A Mountain is also very good, and has amazing covers by Geoff Darrow.
Loved this man!
"Phantom Stranger of San Fernando Valley." - Awesome shoot!
Great interview/discussion guys. Thanks.
Definitely helps to motivate artists when it's -30 C outside - Proud Canadian here :-)
Oh hell yes! BKV FTW!!!
These interviews are amazing guys.
Just about everything BKV touches is gold. Hopefully Pride of Baghdad gets talked about.
Hey! Just like Brian, I haven't missed a New Comic Wednesday in 34 years, even through homelessness living in my car years ago. Only other difference is he's uber successful , talented, and famous and all I have is a room full of comics and loneliness. lol
40:18 this is it. Every one of the greats points back to this.
This show is a gem in a sea of stones.
Hell yeah dude
A year old yes but damn, I was like CK got Brian K. Vaughn?!? Read Y the Last Man years ago but it's still like I MUST HAVE THIS!!! And thanks for sharing the dark side man, I have struggled alot being like the mid point evolutionary artist in my family but battles with life are only trumped by the war within. Helps to hear that may means I'm closer than I think to being able to say I am rather than I did.
The GOAT!
I always think its Ray Romano talking then i look up and see BKV 😅
Not a cartoonist but DA Levy is from Cleveland and is a huge influence on mimeograph zines and underground poetry
Cool guest guys. Keep tearing it up.
He seems like a nice guy. 👍🏾
Was their seriously not a single mention of Runaways???
180 Issues like 180 "Seinfeld" episodes
BKV sounds like Henchman24 from Venture Bros.
BKV + FS 👑 👸
You guys know EVERYONE, lol
Fun fact: Stephen King brings books to read at Red Sox games. True story, there’s tons of pictures of him reading between innings. #godlevel
Is substack cool? I havent subscribed to anybody yet.
@@feeddannyo2061 I heard about it because of James Tynions newsletter, but I think he was charging a pretty high number per year.
