Fantastic book, thank you for covering it. I was always struck by the part where Miller talks about how much fun he has as a cartoonist, and Eisner counters with something to the effect of, "Comics aren't about having fun for me, I don't have time for that."
Comics published in the last 7 years have taught me to move beyond nostalgia. It’s so different and fresh that I don’t miss how superheroes stories made me feel in my youth.
Just got this book, Eisner was the one that made me really enjoy comics
Great video. Love being able to hear these guys talk shop. Such a tragedy that Ed is gone. SO much knowledge and talent thrown away. And for nothing. RIP, Ed. Wish you had just waited it out. A few months longer and none of that idiocy would’ve mattered. All your miserable crappy detractors would’ve gone on to ruin someone else’s life. Losing you was an enormous loss to us all.
Two things: One, regarding the comments Eisner and Miller made about blue = black, based on my experience going to a printer to see my book printed if I understood what I was told correctly, if one is printing a full color book, black is essentially just the three primary colors mixed together (red/blue/yellow). But if you’re going to print a black and white book with just one color tone (Darwyn Cooke’s ‘Parker’ is a good example) you have to decide whether the black is warm or cool, warm being a black based in red and cool based on blue. For instance. So to put it another way, if you buy ink to water down and do washes the ‘gray’ might come across as more warm or more cool depending on which ink you prefer,, and from my own experience it’s good to choose one side or the other, and also stay monotonous to your ink during a job if you want the original art to look great. Another tip is if you want to start experimenting with, say, gray copic markers (which I cannot recommend more highly) again do the same, pick either a cool set or a warm set but trying to juggle both is a great way to get in over your head fast. I know folks don’t want to hear this, but if you want to get more ambitious with color just go digital. Your sanity will thank you in the long run.
Two: Miller wrote a fantastic letter really early in his career to (I think?) Spirit Magazine summing up and singing Eisner’s praises, , and it’s one of those gems that ought to be unearthed. I’ll look for it as well as the two issues of the Journal you guys need for the Wolfman/ Marvel testimony, but it’s the letter that ends with something like, ‘Will, you are my two favorite artists.’ Even when Frank’s work kiiiiinda lost me in the late 90’s, 99.999% of his essays remained articulate and sharp tongued. But that letter (and the essay he wrote in the Journal concerning Jack Kirby’s original art battle) really stand out as my two absolute favorites.
Do you guys like Sean Murphy? I think he is a beast, and one of the best things to come out of the aughts. I would love to see a video about Punk Rock Jesus. Or any of his work really.

I bought this when it came out, and it's brilliant. My favorite is when they start talking about the "kid scratching swastikas into his school desk," and the divide in reactions between Frank and Will.
The other "bible" was Eisner's SHOP TALK. Read it like 12 times.
Miller said his books were made for that type of kid if I remember correctly. Eisner’s wife’s reaction of something like “oh, Frank” is gold.
You might want to clarify that Sin City may have been the first time Miller did an original graphic novel 'as the writer+artist'. Because his first graphic novel as a writer was Daredevil: Love & War, illustrated/painted by Bill Sienkiewicz.

You guys were talking about Webcomics, have any of you read a web book called Forming by Jesse Moynihan? Not sure if it was even finished yet but it was one of the best books I've read.
Really cool conversation on format. I feel stuck with Manga and traditional American formats and the European format is something that feels more like my style after reading some of Alan Moore’s old Monster comics. I draw in a manga style and this has inspired me to push that into a wide and boxy European format.
