    Great again Sam. What EllisClark can do for the money is a bargain from German perspective lol. All those specs..., easily double that price of 295 over here. Why metal? Because nothing can beat it. Plastic looks plastic, no matter how well disguised. Paints and finishes have come a long way and they've managed to camouflage the plastic but in the end, we can always pick out the metal locos. Metal looks and feels substantial like a real loco instead of a toy. This includes metal gears as well. They don't crack and are made for a life time. Metal high quality expensive locos are a life time investment, that's the way we look at it, and that's why we are hooked to Märklin. Why would anyone buy Hornby Dublo? Same reason. Not everyone is on a stingy budget Sam. For low budget, there are plenty options. For the UK, Hornby Railroad for example. For us..., metal as much as possible. At a price tag of course, but we save up for each purchase. We're not hoarders, lol. Each their own of course. Cheerio.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  Год назад +10

      haha true - it's just a fortune from a British perspective, and that's the problem! I like metal too - but these days they can achieve a perfect finish in plastic, so the only benefit is weight... which isn't necessary in a tender!
      Thanks for watching, Sam :)

      @@SamsTrains We can always pick out metal Sam..., always. They come very, very close with finishes on plastic though, but perfect? No not really. But again, each their own.

      I understand what you mean, also those German engines are bullet proof models. I swear they, especially trix/Marklin, are planted on the track. They are my best runners and contain the very best mechanism compared to British models form Hornby and Bachmann. Electronics and extensive lighting functions are also where the money is besides build materials

    • @lindaoffenbach
      @lindaoffenbach Год назад +4

      @@Marco-xz9sc Exactly this. We are now searching for an EMD F7 Santa Fe used. The minimum set is a motorised A unit which can be expanded with a dummy with a cab and a B (middle) unit. All zinc bodies, metal chassis, solid motor block and metal gears. VERY heavy on the track but indeed planted on it and rock solid running. This 1 heavy motor in the A unit can still easily pull all the weight of a 3-part-unit pulling metal coaches, take an incline, and the running characteristics still remain steadfast excellent.

      I love metal too, I'm a fan of Sabaton... Uh, not this category ?
      The Ellis Clark WD 2-10-0 does not surprise me. If you want the same kind in Germany, you have the Roco BR 44 around this pricetag (also a 2-10-0 of course). Ellis Clark seems ready to match the quality of German models, they have an option in my wallet by now.

    I went and did it! I reserved an Ellis Clark Austerity 2-10-0. I'll get a slight break on the pri e as I won't have to pay VAT. But Canadian import fees and our HST will eat into most of those savings.
    Now I just have to $10 away per week for the next year.

    I would just like to give my input on Ellis Clark's decision to include a brass tender. As a British kit modeller, a lot of the kits I build are out of brass, and if you look at professionally-built brass models, then it is very evident how high quality it looks. The finish, the weight, and the feel of it in your hands are unbeatable. Brass is also a lot more durable than plastic, so using it in on a tender can provide a finer layer while also making it not prone to breaking. For example, a lot of manufacturers nowadays have thick wingplates on the smokebox because the plastic could easily break if it was too thin. Utilising brass resolves this to a great extent by keeping it thin and accurate. I assume that's why they chose to do that on the tender.
    However, I would also like to note that using brass is likely not the feature that would drive the price up very much since brass itself is not expensive. The WD's tenders are flat, meaning the factory workers won't have to curve around the tender too much (meaning less of an increase in price). I doubt it would be much higher than using plastic, even though it is metal.
    Their high prices are likely due to the enormous amounts fine bits and pieces on the model. Overall, I think the price is reasonable for what they're offering, but the price itself remains very steep.
    Cheers, Julien.

    There is definitely a price for a premium model. The ready to run high end models look better than scratchbuilt masterpieces from the 70's. There is no denying the absolute manufacturing beauty out there right now. It's just not cheap. I think there is plenty of room in the market for a premium, "normal" and budget model - some models are so niche its just not worth making them in budget or "normal" form.

    I've currently got the Ellis Clark Austerity on pre-order as I ordered it the day it was announced. I have considered switching to the KR Models version, both because of the price difference, but also because KRM are now offering both 600 Gordon and 601 Kitchener in the LMR Blue.
    As yet however I haven't, partially because KRM want the money upfront, and money's a little tight at the moment (thanks mostly to Rapido's Titfield & GER Class C53 Train Pack Releases), but also because KRM haven't, as you say, given us much detail. Something feels a little off, I wonder if KRM were taken by surprise at EC announcement and weren't quite ready.
    For the moment I'm just going to leave my pre-order with EC, at least until more information (and hopefully some artwork from both companies) comes to light. Though I might not even get the EC version in the end, £240 - £295 is a lot of money for one locomotive.

    Re the price of the Ellis Clark WD/BR 2-10-0 The price is not that bad, if it has a diecast body,etc. The DJH kit K39 costs £227.38. Then there is £83.95 for the mortor/gearbox and £135.44 for a set of wheels. You would then either have to build it and paint it. or pay someone else to do that for you.. A total cost of £446.77 before the cost of building and painting it etc

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  Год назад

      Yeah but that’s assuming the DJH kit is good value for money, and I don’t think it is. £83.95 is absurd for a set of wheels. Mass produced ready to run locos just don’t cost that much to make, not even close. While the features of the Ellis Clark loco do math the price, I’m just not sure that such an expensive loco is what the industry needs right now, but time will tell!

    Great video. I like the news videos. I am curious though: You (almost) always mention that you think the models are too expensive. I think it would be great if you could elaborate (perhaps in a different video) what you think a model like the one from Ellis Clark should cost? I don't like the rising prices either, but detailed models cost money. Also, if the numbers are low, the price is higher.
    With regards to the Heljan model: I will put my money on it being bad. They never seem to disappoint in that regard... sadly.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  Год назад

      I think the price is fair given the specs given… I just question whether the specs are entirely necessary. But if there’s demand for such a high spec and expensive model, it’ll sell, and that will be that!

    Wow, that EllisClark WD loco looks nice. At that price, it’s around what I would expect to pay for an Athearn or Kato Big Boy. So, if they (EllisClark) made an excellent mechanism, then it should be worth the price. But, I’ll let Sam review it first. This way, we can tell if this is worthy of someone’s layout… or if it’s overpriced junk, fit only for the evil Scrap Man!! 😭
    Let’s all tip our hats to Sam. Spending money on these things to review, so we don’t have to. Way to take one for the team there, Sam! 😅❤

      Yeah that’s right, and as much as their previous models have been great, this is their first OO loco, so they don’t have a proven track record. It’s a bit odd that they’ve taken on such a massive project as their first loco… think I would have started with a small tank engine if I was doing my first rtr loco… OO is a very different kettle of fish to O after all!

    Hi, im confused with the WD 2-10-0 announcements as i will be purchasing one but i have no idea which i should go for when in reality the loco will stay in its box in a cupboard.
    This may be odd but my Dad, while doing his National Service was stationed on the LMR and as an engine driver, drove Gordon on many occasion, he was asked by the SVR in the 1970s if he would drive for them but he refused as was "too busy" we did however get him on the footplate in the engine shed and replicated a photo of him in the cab of Gordon taken in the 1950s before he passed away.
    Any advise on which company youd go for appreciated. I know at the moment its speculative but i have no idea

    Another informative video.
    I know some people .I,e all thd bells and whistles on a model trains and I respect that, but I often feel we are being suckered by things that are frankly impractical.
    The humble spring buffer is nice but really services no purpose in model form.
    I model 0 gauge and even shunting wagons with three link couplings the buffers are to highly sprung and with tight curves you get buffer lock.
    These models are no longer toys like back in the dim dark early 60s.
    I bought my wife a Hornby coronation, a beautiful model, but almost scared to touch it as the detail parts are so fragile.
    I had to buy the Titfield Thunderbolt as I'm a sentimental old fool and Rapido warn you not to pick up the loco by holding the coupling rods as they are almost to scale.
    Whilst I like all the details it's the practical things that matter like durability, a quality drive train , a heavy engine an,d pick-ups on as many wheels as possible.
    Plastic gears is a pet hate of mine.

    11:56 TBH, this is KR Models, they are giving us one of the most useless models for OO (or any model gauge) - Big Bertha. She was designed to push and that's it. The model is only useful for those modelling Bromsgrove and/or the Lickey Incline anywhere between 1919 & 1955. The model costs £220 DCC Ready which is a alright price but looking at their Fell & GT3, I don't have high hopes

      @@SamsTrains Thanks for the reply Sam. Yes I would totally agree. I’m actually surprised they’ve gone this route. HM7k clearly has its issues but the basic premise seems to be the way forward. Direct control to the chip over the air, with the rails only needed for basic power supply. The fact that it’s cheap and easily update-able is a bonus too.

    With manufacturers struggling to try and outdo each other by stuffing their models full of junk you don't need you have to ask yourself this. How much of the time is a steam loco running with its firebox door open, compared to how much of the time do steam locos run without any crew in them........🤔
