    This hobby is just getting ridiculously expensive. It's almost as if it's trying to kill itself off on purpose, by making it prohibitive for anyone but the wealthy with lots of disposable income to even consider working with current models.

      I’ve got an Accurascale 37 on pre order which thankfully I’ve payed for. But just Cancelled my preorder of the Cavalex Class 60. Just under £300 I couldn’t justify it try as I might 😫.
      My wife is very accepting of my hobby but even she has her breaking points

    • @robinforrest7680
      @robinforrest7680 Год назад +9

      Yes, a shame but there must be people who are willing and able to spend that kind of money otherwise they wouldn’t be priced like that. But when I see wagons at £30/£40 it just seems crazy to me. Fortunately I’ve got all my old locos and rolling stock from the 60’s - 80’s so I’ll just do what I’ve always done and upgrade them with added detail as we always used to do back in the day. When you can get a die cast Hornby Dublo 2 rail loco for between £20-£80 it seems a bit mad spending £200+ Can you really see all that detail when it’s running on the layout?

    • @Mapplewell_Park
      @Mapplewell_Park Год назад +2

      I do think the Accurascale wagon packs are good value for money though with the amount of detail on them. 3 for £69.95 or around that

    My tip to help combat the increasing costs of the hobby is to model a specific area rather than generally just collecting "nice looking" models. I haven't bought a brand new loco for over a year (have bought some nearly new 02s and terriers). I wont be buying any more new locos until Rapidos' E1s come out.

    I think my most anticipated loco is still the GER S56. There’s just something about Great Eastern locos that’s just so nice, be it the blue livery or the unique designs. Curious to see how the final model will turn out next year.

    That NCB maroon 15xx is a pretty handsome machine! Might have to consider importing one.
    Speaking of Rapido, though; my favorite bit of model news from this month, if you can call it news, was the video they shared of a running sample of the Jones Goods. Unbelievably excited for my favorite pre-grouping design to be available in OO!

    Let's hope Hornby keep going with the TT:120 range as collecting in this scale will not gobble up space in your loft as fast as OO gauge! I had wanted a Class 50 in OO, but never got around to buying one. This TT offering looks tempting. But as always, the price may not be as inviting! Thanks for uploading

  • @theenigmaticgamer
    @theenigmaticgamer Год назад +2

    Personally I have decided to draw a line in my model railway purchases. Prices are simply prohibitive!
    Hornby and Bachmann are having a laugh expecting people to pay such exorbitant sums for their products in the current economic climate.
    The “exclusives” from Rails of Sheffield strike me as particularly expensive. They may look good, but even though I am able to afford them, I simply cannot bring myself to spend such money on my hobby.
    I think the bubble is likely to burst at some point.
    Hornby are particularly at risk in my view. They have just bought a stake in Warlord Games a well known and successful wargaming company which strikes me as well outside their comfort zone. I appreciate they own Airfix, but Warlord are a wargaming miniature figures and vehicles company. This on top of the TT 120 project, which is still in its infancy seems very ambitious.
    Interesting times ahead.
    Thanks for the comprehensive update Sam.

    I’ve got the nuclear flasks. Really detailed models. I’m really happy with them. Don’t forget to buy two batteries if you get them though (for the tail light…it’s a magic wand job) as I presumed they’d come with the wagons. Accurascale sell the exact ones for a couple of quid.

    Wonderful and always most intriguing Sam. We were discussing here at home lately about model manufacturers and colour matching according to prototype. None of them are doing a superb job actually and they should A: match paint and sheen precisely to whatever builds, rebuilds or reworks of the prototype chosen, and B: set a standard within the model train industry based on RAL, pantone or whatever... Work to be done there we thought. Cheerio.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  Год назад +1

      Thanks Linda - yeah it's a very complex issue, particularly with the older locos - there was a lot of variation in real life which complicates things even more!

    Sam - Enjoyed the July reviews. I was looking forward to the news that the original HST was going to be a future release and even tuned in to watch the video on the announcement day. After viewing, I was exceptionally disappointed to see that only the preserved power car was going to be produced. I contacted Rails by email immediately after the video to ask if the intended to produce both power cars as a set. They responded by stating 'we currently have no plans to do so'. I then contacted Locomotion Models by email not once but twice and, at the time of writing this, have had no response. This future release is a case of half a job and a missed opportunity to 'fill the gap' on an absolutely iconic part of modern railway history.

    For the Hornby 2MT, I wonder if, finally, I will be buying one in BR 5 livery or not. If the motor is not their usual piece of junk, and if they manage to have a quality control on the assembly line instead of in the customer's homes at unboxing, this one seems to be an interesting buy. A comparison with the Dapol GWR Mogul would be interesting.

If I were cynical, I might wonder whether this improvement might be related to the departure of Simon Kohler; or is this just a natural evolution of things at Hornby? While not covered in your video, I notice that Hornby is now supplying other retailers with TT:120 products against all the predictions of those nay-sayers (easy to say, I know, but I predicted [to myself, admittedly] that this would happen).
