Back in the day, Simon Kohler said that the on-line only marketing was specifically to give Hornby better control of supply (and access to feedback) during the launch phase. Opening up to dealers is a logical development - let's hope they can support it!
Good round up Sam! Little bit of insight into the TT:120 "is it popular" question : I sometimes like to read company annual reports because I'm sad like that, and in Hornby's latest annual report (which is pretty gloomy overall, they made a loss) they mention some product lines they over-ordered and have stock sitting around, and some they under -ordered and could have sold more, and they specifically mention TT:120 as something they should have ordered a lot more of, so seems it was more popular than they predicted. Makes you wonder what the stock that didn't sell was...(remember this is Hornby group so it could be Airfix, Scalextrix etc etc not necessarily train related).
One model that may not be selling that well is Tiger. I found someone selling brand new sets (tiger plus 3 of Sam's "favourite" wagons) for £130 including postage!!!!!! He had 10 to sell. I feared the worst but took the plunge in time. They had all gone within a day or so. I received it today and it seems to be fine, accepting the fact that very slow running is not its forte, as Sam has noted. If I am correct it is a shame since I would commend Hornby for producing different variations of the same basic model, even if the wagons are expensive. Also, I do hope TT works out for them.
Sometimes Hornby produce a product that doesn't sell. The classic is the Scalextric velodrome they produced for the 2012 Olympics which was quite an expensive set. I remember seeing a huge pile of new ones being offloaded at Leeds Market around 2019 for a fiver each. Apparently, before Hornby closed the Margate shop for renovation, they had a huge (and I mean huge) amount of steampunk stuff piled up. Airfix however isn't a problem compared to Hornby/Corgi/Scalextric as once the tooling costs and R&D is recouped the kits cost pennies to make due to low cost of labour and materials so overestimating demand of an Airfix kit isn't a big issue, however overestimating demand of an expensive to produce, detailed, hand assembled Hornby locomotive seriously impacts cash flow. I think they underestimated Rapido and Accurascale in taking a chunk of their market.
Hi Sam, Model shops now selling Hornby TT include: Hattons, TMC, Cheltenham, Bure Valley, Frizinghall model rail shop. You can also buy them in Australia and at least one European shop.
I personally would recommend the "Wallaby" Hawthorn & Leslie saddle tank. It worked here in Australia and would provide some variation to your collection.
The man in my local model shop says he stocked the original Triang TT back in the day. He says the reason it was unpopular was that it was very expensive and not good quality. Hornby's TT range is very expensive, but it is finescale and will appeal to collectors. The market for N gauge is very small - even less than O gauge. TT:120 is a good idea - most people these days live in very small homes. Back in the 1930s when OO gauge was introduced, most houses were larger. TT:120 is quite fun to collect. The models will easily fit into a small display case like that one you reviewed earlier, so at least you've got a use for it!
|I think your local man's a bit adrift there - Triang TT was quite reasonably priced in comparison with either Triang or Hornby Dublo OO, and were of very good quality regarding reliability - many of them are still running well sixty years later. Can I ask how old he is? Triang TT was produced from about 1958 to 1964, before the advent of reliable N gauge systems eclipsed it. If he stocked the original system, and is still running a shop he must be rather old.
@@JohnDavies-cn3ro He is indeed rather old. I have got some Triang TT. Compared to modern TT:120 it is very coarse scale. I have not done a price comparison allowing for inflation, so I am not able to say whether modern TT works out cheaper or more expensive!
The Hornby salmon looks to be direct competition with the Flangeway salmon, produced by dapol for my local shop. I have one of theirs and it's pretty darn good! Hard to beat.
Hornby did the same with the N gauge Brighton Belle. You had to buy it from them at full price as it was only available from them, but after a few months they were available from various retailers at a discount
Ah! Those little tank engines. It would have to be "Invincible" for me. Until the early 1960's, this locomotive used to run, mostly along streets, from Farnborough Main station goods yard, through to the Ammunitions factory. See 5:30
11:00 having visited Chester model centre recently, we also visited our local one - John Dutfield in Chelmsford who had a stock of Hornby TT available!
If Hornby's TT120 trains aren't selling as well as they expected, it maybe because there is nothing available as yet from the SR and GWR regions. I sold my OO layout consisting of both regions in anticipation of building a TT scale layout, but the table for it remains bare !
I got my Accurascale Manor yesterday! An absolutely fantastic model. Price is perfect, sound is superb and the detail is mind blowing. I hope they release other GWR loco’s
Hornby are not just supplying retailers in the UK with the TT range. It has also appeared in my local model shop (Branchline) here in Melbourne Australia.
I remember “ Invincible“ Working through Farnborough on its way through the streets to and from The Royal Aircraft Establishment it’s currently in bits on the Isle of Wight
Funny you mention that since hornby specifically advertised their collector club streamlined thane of fife as having the diecast foot plate but very clearly didn't actually come with one
Last week Rapido teased what look like a pair of little Manning Wardle tank engines for 00. I’m very excited for these, they’re normally exclusive to 0 gauge!
All the retailers should ban taking on Hornby's TT (Toy Train) range. They wanted exclusivity so lets give it to them, as their greedy venture sinks! 😂
Rapido’s announcement of the S160s is incredibly exciting as I have a deep soft spot for those locos. The very first standard gauge steam locomotive I ever rode behind was an S160 at the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad way back in 04, obviously this one doesn’t like like its European counterparts due remaining in the USA as opposed to across the Atlantic, but nevertheless this class still has a very special place in my heart.
Hi Sam. Sam... please give a shout out (or maybe even a scream) to all manufacturers in your next upload to produce a Sir Henry Fowler LMS or BR Class 2F 0-6-0T that was a short wheelbase loco designed for tight curves on dockland. Hornby and Bachmann produced a variety of Sir Henry Fowler’s 0-6-0T 3F Jinties (mainly Hornby with their S&DJR, LMS and BR models), and Bachmann produced a lovely BR Samuel Johnson 1F 0-6-0T before the 4F 0-6-0 tender loco was introduced that put an end to the LMS/BR 0-6-0Ts. Great ‘Network Rail’ Class 37/97. Didn’t know you entertained DCC on your layout so, does this mean more DCC reviews in the future? Cheers, Paul. 👍❤️
Ive had Hawthorn Leslie "Invincible" on pre order from day one. Lovely little engine which resides here on the Isle of Wight. Sadly out of action at the moment. Boiler work needed I think.
nice to have a TT range stockist somewhat locally, I think that range should have been in shops to start with as its more of a "pick up and buy" size for the family home. A 00 kit would be a pain to carry around the shops for the day lol
Sam, I see, during your review, two items, one from Rapido, Medina E1 and Dapol, Invinsible are associated with the Isle of Wight. The Isle of Wight Steam Railway has both of these locomotives at their Heritage Site. Are you going to purchase those associated with the Island, for review? I've had the pleasure of riding on the footplate of Invinsible (many years ago), as well as their Terriers; Newport & Freshwater and their O2 Adams Tank, Calbourne.
Worth noting Hornby just recently released an update video for TT regarding further products to come, mostly more options in the form of sound-fitted versions of existing sets and the Scotsman set finally coming with lighted Pullman coaches.
I’m looking forward to getting my hawthorn & Leslie in black ‘Henry’ which has its nameplate on the running plate. I can’t wait to order my own ‘prince of whales’ P2 when I get paid next week. I remember the real life Y7 running at midland railway (my local heritage railway) for one of their vintage train week weekends
fantastic as ever but i think your signal box seen better days. time for the resin printer to shine and print a sams trains excluively designed replacement
The last time Hornby was in deep doodoo along came Triang to the rescue , will we now see the Chinese "carpet baggers" coming along to snap it up! Hornbys portfolio is a large mix and mash of different non railway businesses , from slot cars to paints via plastic kits, so maybe its time to diversify and rebuild a more robust and viable business model. The rise of other model railway manufacturers should and must give Hornby the impetus to do better not only in price but quality control. Well done Sam on your latest presentation it certainly tempts the old wallet!!!!
I believe AC models, Eastleigh are one of the 6 new retailers for TT having spoken to them a couple of weeks ago whilst in Eastliegh en route to Bournemouth
Happened accross some EFE Rail LSWR vans the other day, including an S&DJR version. Seems Kernow have supported Bachmann in their development. Also some earlier 4 coach LSWR Cross Country sets announced.
Problem with TT is that it is so popular they cannot keep up with demand. I ordered a set, but when they received a delivery they had over promised and I was told it would be another month. So I bought items from different sources to start my layout.
Hornby published the full list of TT stockists on their website. They are; - A C Models, Eastleigh - Bure Valley Models, Aylsham - Cheltenham Model Centre, Cheltenham - Chester Model Centre, Chester - Frizinghall Model & Railways, Bradford - Gaugemaster, Arundel - The Model Centre, Whitby
Hi Sam, maybe I've missed it but I've never heard you mention Revolution trains models, whose OO range is expanding, with the recent launch of Caroline. I appreciate they may not fit with your reviews due to the lead in time, but I'm surprised to not have heard them mentioned in passing in your news updates
Oh wow, I really didn't expect you to get Prince of Whales as Lord President was so expensive. It looks amazing and if I will get a new P2 it will be this one. I love the fact that it's gonna be a newly built locomotive that we will see on the mainline one day. I have the old Cock O the North which I've detailed up in the cab, but it runs very poorly after all these years. Also, Accurascale sending you the exclusive model is so incredibly cool. Someone of their marketing team must have seen your review and acknowledged your very detailed reviews. Can't wait to see the comparison of the P2's. Your Lion comparison was very enjoyable. So many great news, thank you, Sam 👍👍
Hey Sam you released the news too early! You’ve missed out on the Rapido Manning Wardle L Class, the Kato Large Englands and the variation of Palmerston. Good video either way 👍
Good video here Sam, some great articles here, I finally had my KR models Fell arrive from the second batch and pleased to report that there have been some improvements made to it regarding things like pickups, another great piece of news is the heljan 10800 locomotives are almost here and I’m thinking of getting one of those.
Ahh excellent - has the pickup design changed or are they just adjusted correctly now? How's the finish now? Ahh yeah I saw those 10800s, hopefully they're good! :D Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@@SamsTrains hi Sam, the pickups as far as I know are the same as the original release but they have been adjusted and the finish on my one looks fine to my eye but at the same time my version is the BR black one, not sure what the second batch green ones are like, oh I’m sure heljan will have done an excellent job on the 10800 locomotives, they have always done an excellent job on their models of the one off prototypes.
TT-120 doesn’t have enough product range to make it tempting. Also you have to buy everything brand new and not supplement with cheaper second hand items as you can with 00. What has confused me is issuing such things as private owner wagons with nothing to run them with. Perhaps they should have concentrated on an era that would be popular, such as 1980s BR blue, to which you could run Flying Scotsman or A4 on steam specials.
Hi Sam, great news reviews, that Accurascale class 37 in network rail yellow livery looks incredible, does this mean they are in the country or are we modellers who purchased it being teased? Looking forward to getting mine in the coming weeks with any luck, thanks for sharing.
in regards to the Dapol Hawthorne Leslie, if u r taking suggestions as to which one to get, I would like 2 recommend the port of London authority blue with yellow lining and red connecting rods.
Earlier today I received a Hornby Class 373 eurostar after I've seen the Eurostar in real life a few days ago. I love it, but it is missing a axle and I'll try and get one. Love your videos!
I have received my Manor from Accurascale Looks pretty good in the hands. But have not had a chance to run it yet as my layout is currently dismantled.
12:00 is that plastic, non-moving valve gear? Come on Hornby, this is £250 pounds! Great to hear the news as always though, and I’m very excited for the Dapol Hawthorn Lesley, as well as the Accurascale Manor, and of course, the S160 from Rapido!
Yeah, Hornby TT has literally just become available in Australia this last week or so. We couldn't even buy through the UK website! Kinda lost the moment there.
Hi sam I hope you & Chloe are well? For me the hattons Genesis coaches we need to locos in the correct livery to go with them in my opinion But still look stunning Thanks for the news Keep safe ARP
I cannot wait for the review of the other version the P2 Mikado without the streamlined casing in the front but it is the new member of the class Prince Of Wales and the review of the new Accurascale GWR Manor class on your channel Sam.
I wonder what's new in Hornby. Anyway soon to get the tracks for my 2 new trains here soon. Ur the best my friend. Sam never disappoints. Long love trains. Trains are my life. If anyone has any recommendations let me know. Sam ur the greatest
Cheers Sam, some fantastic models coming our way. The range of manufacturers established now can only be good for the modeller. I do hope (lol) that Hornby will get real with their pricing though. They aren't in a position to charge what they do any more and I would hate to lose them. However, all my recent purchases have been Dapol, Rapido & Accurascale. I want a Castle but £208 for a reintroduced older tooling...? Just how much do I want this model? Looking forward to your next review.
DIECAST these days can mean metal or resin.EAGLEMOSS used the 2 words together as DIECAST RESIN on some of the TREK ships they did. PERHAPS all companies should refer to either the metal or resin being DIECAST.
Hi Sam. Any chance of reviewing one of these Bachmann 009 quarry locos? They look pretty amazing, and I'd be keen to see just how much price Bachmann can fit into such a small package.
I MANAGED TO GET EARL MARISCHAL from JADLAM and THANE OF FIFE from HORNBY COĹLECTOR CLUB both less than full price. With these out plus the ones you reviewed HORNBY will only have to put out WOLF OF BADENOCH I think it's called for all P2 members to be out
I Really Seem To Like Rapido's 15xx's I (An American) Do Not Own One, But As Someone Who Likes Hawksworth Engines They Sold Pretty Well, Especially The One In Great Western Green Everyone Seemed To Like That One And So Do I
I think Hornby have realised that potential buyers want to see the TT:120 product before committing to buy, also they may have spread the initial range too thinly over all the eras. Is it too late to review the old Corgi Rail Legends loco models which I think were also TT:120 scale and may be a cheap way of adding static models to a layout? Maybe we will really gauge TT:120 demand if/when other manufacturers start to announce/release models.
"Tiny" locos are all very well (and no doubt welcome), but what is really REALLY wanted is an accurate new-tool GWR "Saint". Will it happen in my lifetime? Probably not. Oh, and an "Aberdare" would be nice too.
If (when) you get a Hawthorn Leslie, could you get the Australian Iron and Steel Co livery? It would be the first Australian loco in your collection (even if it is a British designed loco)
it's interesting the S160 pick by Rapido. We will be able to compare their model with the Roco one in HO (I have the Italian version, called Gr. 736 by the FS), which is good minus some annoying details (couplers...). Yeah ! The Y7 is on her way ! Potentially a superb model, I want one in LNER guise, please ! Mmmm, I may be tempted by a E1, wait and see... and I won't miss the Hawthorn Leslie by Dapol ! Genesis coaches, nice period 2 vehicle here. No LMS and GWR reissues ? I'm interested by the BR red period 4. and save a Dapol GWR version autocoach for me, a comparison with the Bachmann model would be interesting. Interesting to see the Accurascale Manor, I'm happy with my Dapol one, and she is not on my shopping list. another comparison to make ! Hornby TT range sold at last in some retailers, yawn... Overpriced from the manufacturer, no one knows the models are here or the traditional modellers snubs the direct sales model by Hornby ? Anytime they try something corny, it does not work... Nice Black 5 sample, I hope they won't put a crappy motor in her. For a price near the one of the German offer, they can't botch this one. By the way, the previous model would make a nice Railway offer below an RRP of GBP 120. By the way, I'm in for the Salmon, looks nice. By the way, you have missed the reissue of the DRG/DB BR 24 in HO scale by Roco (I'm joking ! I'll buy her next month). My Accurascale class 37 BR green is expected next month, as my two 15xx. Wait and see !
I will be surprised if TT is selling, prices are not cheaper currently than OO from discounting retailers and it has only a fraction of the product compared with N and OO. I think the task of building a comprehensive range from scrap is simply unaffordable to Hornby and all this new tooling is eating scarce capital in a company that just a few years ago was facing financial collapse.
@@1maico1 Fair enough, although £1.5 million is not in this day and age so very much stock, other key factor is where those £1.5 million of stock sales came from, if they would bought N or a competitors product and or are new to the hobby then they have succeeded. If however they would spent their money on Hornby's OO product, then they cannibalising their existing market.
How do Hornby decide who the `selected retailers` are? I would love to know who decides and how they come to this decision. It is the same with the tier system, my model shop is unable to order me Hornby items because they are in the `wrong` tier. Back in the 1990`s a Hornby representative would vist my local model shop once a week and if I wanted a locomotive they would place an order and it would be there for me the following week. I don`t know how this new system can be good business for Hornby as I can`t remember the last time I was able to buy a Hornby product from my model shop.
It’s all very strange and seemingly pointless isn’t it? Though I did think the their system was largely kaput at this point. Worth asking your retailer to try again just to see, maybe??

Happened accross some EFE Rail LSWR vans the other day, including an S&DJR version. Seems Kernow have supported Bachmann in their development. Also some earlier 4 coach LSWR Cross Country sets announced.
I’m curious to see with TT coming to retailers what kind of demand we’ll see. If it succeeds I’m curious as to who may enter the market next.
Problem with TT is that it is so popular they cannot keep up with demand. I ordered a set, but when they received a delivery they had over promised and I was told it would be another month. So I bought items from different sources to start my layout.
Hornby published the full list of TT stockists on their website. They are;
- A C Models, Eastleigh
- Bure Valley Models, Aylsham
- Cheltenham Model Centre, Cheltenham
- Chester Model Centre, Chester
- Frizinghall Model & Railways, Bradford
- Gaugemaster, Arundel
- The Model Centre, Whitby
Hi Sam, maybe I've missed it but I've never heard you mention Revolution trains models, whose OO range is expanding, with the recent launch of Caroline. I appreciate they may not fit with your reviews due to the lead in time, but I'm surprised to not have heard them mentioned in passing in your news updates
And what a mighty fine carriage Caroline is. I have one in Network Southeast livery.
Great video Sam, I often see 97302 in mid Wales when we are there, that engine sound is very authentic.
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I see HobbyCo in Sydney (Australia) are selling Hornby TT:120 so appears to be one of Hornby's selected retailers
1) im incredibly hyped for the S160
2) That Class 97 looks like its in Union Pacific Armour Yellow and Harbor Mist Grey.
12:00 is that plastic, non-moving valve gear? Come on Hornby, this is £250 pounds! Great to hear the news as always though, and I’m very excited for the Dapol Hawthorn Lesley, as well as the Accurascale Manor, and of course, the S160 from Rapido!
I’ve just been into Gaugemaster and they are selling TT now, and building a little display
Personally with the Dapol Hawthorn Leslie's I'm going to go for 2780 Asbestos, it's local to me and I'm fairly sure I've been on it before
Yeah, Hornby TT has literally just become available in Australia this last week or so. We couldn't even buy through the UK website! Kinda lost the moment there.
Hi sam
I hope you & Chloe are well?
For me the hattons Genesis coaches we need to locos in the correct livery to go with them in my opinion
But still look stunning
Thanks for the news
Keep safe ARP
I cannot wait for the review of the other version the P2 Mikado without the streamlined casing in the front but it is the new member of the class Prince Of Wales and the review of the new Accurascale GWR Manor class on your channel Sam.
I wonder what's new in Hornby. Anyway soon to get the tracks for my 2 new trains here soon. Ur the best my friend. Sam never disappoints. Long love trains. Trains are my life. If anyone has any recommendations let me know. Sam ur the greatest
TT models available at Frizinghall Models And Railways, Shipley, West Yorkshire
Cheers Sam, some fantastic models coming our way. The range of manufacturers established now can only be good for the modeller. I do hope (lol) that Hornby will get real with their pricing though. They aren't in a position to charge what they do any more and I would hate to lose them. However, all my recent purchases have been Dapol, Rapido & Accurascale. I want a Castle but £208 for a reintroduced older tooling...? Just how much do I want this model? Looking forward to your next review.
5:45 100% Wallaby. How often do you get an Australian locomotive for OO gauge in the 21st Century?
British loco with an Australian name.
TT is always sold out. So it must be doing ok. I need the 108 dangit 😂
I ordered a sound class 37 and your sample has me very excited to get my 37
Received my first Manor class a week ago and it’s incredible. Can’t wait for the other one to show up!
I MANAGED TO GET EARL MARISCHAL from JADLAM and THANE OF FIFE from HORNBY COĹLECTOR CLUB both less than full price. With these out plus the ones you reviewed HORNBY will only have to put out WOLF OF BADENOCH I think it's called for all P2 members to be out
I Really Seem To Like Rapido's 15xx's I (An American) Do Not Own One, But As Someone Who Likes Hawksworth Engines They Sold Pretty Well, Especially The One In Great Western Green Everyone Seemed To Like That One And So Do I
Thank you Sam. Eagerly looking forward to receiving my Manor from Accurascale!
5:43 in my opinion it's the red one
The s160 is a good move. I bet that will sell quite well 😊
I’m buying one
If (when) you get a Hawthorn Leslie, could you get the Australian Iron and Steel Co livery? It would be the first Australian loco in your collection (even if it is a British designed loco)
gaugemaster is one. Saw TT on the chester stand at the cathedral last week.
it's interesting the S160 pick by Rapido.
My personal favourite out of the Dapol Hawthorn Leslie tank engines has gotta be “invincible” in that maroon livery
The Hornby annual report says otherwise. Demand was stronger than the initial online stock of £1.5 million
Why are the wheels on the black five tender so THICK! (The flens)
Hi Sam, an update on Oxford Rails J26 would be appreciated, has it fallen down a rabbit hole when Hornby took over? I placed a pre-order in Feb 2022
I’ve been wondering this too - certainly no news on it for a while… still coming as far as I know, but I wouldn’t get your hopes up too high!
The fantastic Cheltenham model centre is one of the TT 7
TMC are one TT 120 stockists
I'm not sure fully, but Rapido kind of announced a manning wardle 0-6-0st
Sam, Can you let us know about the new castle class hornbys coming out with?
Cant wait for the s160 ive rode on all the ones that run in the uk many people think there ugly but there not so bad
