Do you think dropping to 6 core / 32gb and 5600 M graphics will still be on par with the 8 core/32gb and 5500M ? I’m tempted by the insane performance of this card but wondered how much quality id lose by going for 6 core vs 8 core? I was going off your original laptop spec recommendation before this new card got announced and am now confused! 😂

Great work Max. I am not surprised by your results. I went and ran Bruce X on the tower with two RX 480 cards. It was 12 seconds which shows how much more efficient these new GPUs are.
On another note FCPX, is almost always using at least one of the GPUS fully. That’s another example of how efficient these new chips are.

Help me make a purchase decision of whether I should wait for Apple to release a 120Hz panel option on the 16" MacBook Pro or the $2800 is good enough for now. Do you feel any differentiating smoothness on the 60 Hz of the MacBook as compared to any regular 60 Hz panel? Anyway, cheers for 300k subscribers! 👏

Always great comparisons and real world performance tests, Max. Thank you so much for all the hard work and concise presentation! I know making this stuff takes a really long time, but it is SO valuable to have this info. I was sad to miss the H265 tests on this one though😰. Would also love to see how it handles Long GOP and IPB footage vs all-I, such as FS5 vs FS7 codecs. I'm praying for the day that a budget thin and light (or even a mid range desktop) can handle 6k Long GOP 10bit 422 H.265 while scrubbing super fast through a long timeline... and maybe years later can even do that with FX and noise reduction applied😯

    MacBook Pro advice
    Hello,
    I needed some advice.
Going into university and I will like to order the MacBook Pro. I wanted to know what should I pick ram or storage. I wanted to get MacBook Pro 512 GB of storage but it’s too much to upgrade to 16GB of Ram. Should I pick 512 GB of storage or get 256GB of storage and upgrade to 16GB of ram since it will be in my budget. I also will be getting the Final Cut Pro and other apps bundle so I will be editing. I don’t stream games just watch RUclips videos and movies. P.S I’m going into business. Thanks

Hey! Love your reviews! I just got my 16” 5500M 8GB, and it just got passed the return period.... I’m a filmmaker now doing mainly 4K editing, but I’ll be starting doing 6K in a couple of years. Should I really sell it and get the new one with 5600M? Or is my current spec enough for even 6K editing? I don’t do RAW just ProRes 422 and LT. Oh and my current spec is: 2.3GHz 8-core i9, 64GB RAM, 5500M 8GB, 2TB. I am feeling bad about getting it too soon now...but I hate to sell it and get the new one. So I’d like to know your opinion on my current setup for future 6K use. And I probably will get a desktop in a few years for my working station and possibly 6K to 8K. So 8K for my laptop isn’t the issue now, just 6K editing. Thank you!

Well, at least they finally offer again a machine where the 'pro' makes sense again. Macbook pros have been always these small, super fast laptops that you could use as a desktop replacement, not so much with their last models, where the entry model had only a 128GB SSD. They shouldn't remove however the butterfly keyboard or give us at least an option to choose it.
As for the pricing: it's ridiculous, however, if you go with the macbook pro 16 inch i7 512 SSD, 16 RAM and the 5500M 4GB RAM, i think its still "okay" and the perfomance should be good as well. The perfomance you get with the 5600 is insane, but expensive.
MacOS, build quality and battery life (this is really amazing) are awesome.
If you don't care about these things, check out the ASUS G14 with the Ryzen 7 4800H and the GTX2060. It costs around "only" 2000€ and has also a great battery life.

I don't do video, nor do I game; I work with professional audio. I'm using an upgraded 2009 Mac Pro. I bought it used several years ago. I've upgraded the cpu. It's been dropped by UPS, so the frame is bent. Know what? It does exactly what I need. It's amortized itself a couple of times. I'm not a computer geek at all. Whenever someone says "Get a PC it's cheaper..." I don't see PC's lasting as long. They don't hold their value either. I hold on to my computers and run 'em until I can't any more. You get what you pay for. That's my experience at least. Oh, and I really like Mac os.

I have always owned a pc and MacBook or iMac at the same time. The pc def outperformed the iMac and MacBook Pro for cheaper but then would get viruses, overheat and have weird issues. So I haven’t figured out what I prefer. I am just getting into gaming so that’s why I’m leaning PC my next purchase. But I wanna see the new iMac specs tthat will be released tomorrow!

    • @codecampbase1525

tekis0 same here, i have and old macbook pro 2012 which i bought used on ebay. The no retina display is kinda like an issue, but other than that it works really good.
But i also have an self build computer thats also getting really old and it runs smooth as well. So the macbook pro build quality is awesome, no doubt, but i think a windows computer/ and some laptops with better build quality could last also pretty long.
The old macbook pros are upgrade able, the new ones since the butterfly keyboard are not. So if you buy a macbook pro for over 1000$ just with 128GB SSD and 8GB of Ram, you won't be able to upgrade them.

Okay, with the announcement of Apple Silicon, I think it would be best to wait for the new tech. The 5600m 8gb won't have the best resale value. I have decided to keep the current 5500m 8gb setup I have and sell for an arm in the near future. This is a game changer. Good luck on whatever everyone on here decides to do. Also, I may move back to Final Cut, after leaving it at end of the 7 era. Final X's color correction in silicon looks incredible. Game changer for creators.

Of course it can. You can even do it with the Macbook Pro 13 base model.
There are some youtube videos out there that show this setup, check them out.
As for this model, i assume you could stream and play on the macbook pro while also doing background video rendering at the same time.
I don't own it, but the performance looks crazy.
Another option would be to buy one of these super small mini pcs from acer for example. You can get them for 200 euros and they are as small as an external hdd disk (well, almost).
The ASUS G14 is also a great laptop with a lots of power for around 2000€.
You could also built a small mini itx desktop pc with 4k perfomance around 600-700€, but i guess that's out of your options.
