    In this episode of MIG Monday we invited one of Bob's students, Clayton Lessert, to help us demonstrate a viewer request; 6010 downhill roots and repair welds. We begin with some 3/8" plate beveled to 30 degrees with a 1/16" gap. The machine is set to 85 amps and we are going to run a downhill root pass. During the weld, the rod will start wandering off to one side and we will have to grind it out and restart the weld. We will adjust the amperage up two - three amps to compensate for some lack of penetration on the backside. After the weld is complete, there is problem. On the restart, we didn't tie in to the previous bead and there is an inconsistency on the backside. We can't have that, so we will show you how to repair and overcome this to get proper backside penetration throughout the entire weld.

    Through life I've had many teachers. In many cases the phrase; "Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach." applies. In Bob Moffat's case the opposite applies. This man can teach! He understands the how to do it, and much more rare, he knows how to teach.
    He is the very best in his subject, and among a very few in any subject.

    hey Bob, industrial combo welder here. I think that what your teaching these guys is great!! can't tell you how many welders come through different jobs not knowing anything, only how to pass a test to get that money. Once they're out in the field, they do maybe one or two welds, but they never learn how to weld in a tight spot, or repair a weld. Good to see that students who go through you, learn what it's like on a real job!!
    If I could make a request to pick your brain, I'd like to see a repair on pipe. Keep up the great work Bob!

    Bob, I wish I could spend about two weeks just welding 6010 root passes, fillers and caps with you so I could go to the pipeline. You burn that root in good every time. You are one slick welder.

    I know it's a fast freeze rod and I know the plate has a ledge ground on it to help prevent blowout but I'm always amazed the plate doesn't melt away on open root welding.

    Great video! Learning to fix and repair is just as important as learning not to make mistakes. I have screwed up on tests but managed to grind it out and pass the test anyway. Please make more of these videos.

    Hey bob. I'd love to move out to America to come learn how to weld properly at your college and then get a welding job out there. I currently work as a maintenance engineer in England and practice welding in my spare time. Love it.

    I was making the mistake of holding it too long to try and fill the puddle... causing blow thru constantly. I eventually realised I am not gonna end up with a thick bead, its not a fill rod it's a freeze rod. these videos and me practicing it helped me to be able to do open roots!! thanks Sir!!

    Excellent video. I really enjoyed watching one of your students do the welding. It was refreshing to see how other than an expert (like you) gets along doing the exercise. In addition your excellent advice on how proceed and correct problems was very informative. Much more so that watching you do everything perfectly every time. I hope you can follow this format more often. Very informative for non-professional welders like me because I'm likely to make even more mistakes than your student.

    That's exactly what needs to happen that way he knows how to fix it cause stuff happens. It don't mean you can't weld good cause everybody has bad days. The thing that makes a great welder is they know how to fix it and willing to fix it if something happens

      I’m a retired ironworker and took a job at the technical college But actually work with a dual enrollment program at one of the rural high schools and I found your videos and am learning a lot of teaching ideas from you.     Viewer Request: Can Weld.com do a video on stacking 6010 beads. Basic beginner stuff. I ran a plate yesterday and it was decent but I'd love to see a technique that is easily repeatable for strong welds and good appearance. Is there a better technique than whipping forward one rod and back half? Can we make an e to make it easier? I'd love to know how to fill the crater at the end of the pass and how to start a bead without a mountain of metal at the beginning. Thanks!

    Super video. For us willing to try to weld from zero, your explanations are superb. I wonder, we that have not weld think of the arc as the space between electrode (stick) and work piece, are you actually touching the work with the electorde ? Hear you saying "push it" and looks like touching on the down side. Again thank you all for sharing your life.

      In general it is considered a bad practice to teach people to weld with one hand. This one time I will make an exception to that general practice. Downhill is fast travel speed, I have seen people blow out the back side of the plate from moving to slow. Many times moving to slow is the problem causing lack of penetration and young welders will think that they are welding to cold. Sometimes this turning the machine up way to hot out of frustration will cause blow outs or even less penetration. Downhill is a hot weld but only about 15% hotter than flat position work. You need a short arc when welding downhill stick on the root to force the puddle back and up into the joint, if you run excessive heat it will be hard to maintain a short arc because the rod will burn off faster. It is sometimes helpful to weld with one hand on a downhill root, it is easy to get too comfortable and then not be able to move fast enough to keep the rod deep in the joint. When you go to one hand you can prop with the non-welding hand and focus on keeping the welding hand pushing in. Employ a 15-20 degree drag that big drag will use the force of the 6010 arc to push metal into the root side of the joint. The one hand technique helps also when you have a rod that fingernails, that means burns out of one side of the flux. Many times finger nailing can be stopped by keeping your rod pushed into the joint and gently but quickly rocking your hand side to side. One thing is rod positioning I always bend my rod over when welding downhill this just gets the stinger out of my field of view and lets me get more comfortable without being too comfortable. When you downhill you have to find '' your spot'' because things happen fast. Some people even run like the first 1/2 to 3/4 of the welding rod with a finger pulling down on the rod to force it into the joint and keep pressure in the direction of travel. Downhill is busy and fast. Downhill is easy it is just different so sometimes we get a mental block about one thing and that one thing is what makes downhill kick our butt for a minute until we figure it out. Just stay sharp and find your spot after you do that you will be set!

    Bob, I noticed that after you burned your first rod on down pass. Did you clean off the slag or did you just start welding right in the old slag? I guess my question is if you did the later wouldn't that contaminated the weld? You made have clean it off camera and viewers just didn't see.

      On 6010 and a demo plate, I'm not worried. In the field or on a test, yes I'll clean it. You would be surprised though how well 6010 will weld right through it and not leave an indication on x-ray.

    Excellent video Bob, I like it when things go wrong sometimes it happens, and you showed how to fix it. Just wondering, I noticed you didn't chip the slag off before your restart, wouldn't that cause slag inclusions?

    When and how do you clean the slag? Not between restarts? I'm liking the idea of using a twisted wire wheel for cleanup. I'll use a grinding/cutting disc for re-doing a weld I'm not happy with (as you did in this video). Not many videos show the cleanup part.

      Harry Pehkonen If you hit it while the slag is still red hot you can just continue welding. However its better to clean it off with a wire wheel so you dont get inclusions.

    I'm a refrigeration operating engineer and i am planning on teaching myself to weld. i just ordered the everlast 200dv . my question is can you do a video on how to create your own coupons. both pipe and flat . i have access to plenty of leftover pipe and angle iron. how can i get the 30 degree bevel on pipe evenly. Thank you in advance. that esab 235 has me reconsidering my purchase lol

      Welding is not the only skill you have to learn. Cutting, grinding and beveling is a must if you want succes.
      And you are an engineer, so theory and learning stuff should be easy for you.
      One word of advice. Dont make it to difficult for yourself in the beginning.
      Keep it simple with few tools. Grinding a bevel is not that difficult, and I don't think you need NDT anyway :)

      MrPONCHO467 it doesn't have to be perfectly at the angle specified. The bevel just needs to reflect what the pipe schedule is. For instance, it is possible to make a 2" schedule 40 look like a 2" schedule 80. All it really takes is practice. do a little bit at a time. To achieve the angle you said, place your grinder at about 45°, then reduce the angle ever so slightly, and you'll more or less have that 37.5°.

      Better dollars than I make as an IT professional and 4 years of university. There's not a year that goes by that I don't think I should have gone into welding or machinist.

      @@byron7165 And that's after just one year.. The Welders I work with who are Mechanics as well all make more than $65hr. Granted the program is 5 years, but you'll come out of it starting at $44hr. Unless you're a Doctor, Lawyer or Athlete you aren't making anything close to that at the beginning or end of your college career.

    I would like to see the proper way to join 2 pieces of I-Beam? I have a 14,000lb GVWR 22' gooseneck flatbed trailer that I want to cut and extend by 5' and I'm not sure if there a different technique specific to joining structural beams? The frame is 4" x 8" x 3/16" 12lb per foot I-Beam. Thanks!

    I need help!! I need to test for down hill 6010 root/fill/cap on 6G 6” pipe. My fill and cap are decent but I struggle with a consistent root it’s so frustrating. I run at about 85/90 amps. 3/32 gap and landing. I’ll drag the rod and I see both sides melting but the puddle won’t follow me down, if I try to “whip” it I’ll either get a pinhole or blowout the keyhole and make a fat weld inside the pipe. How can I fix this?

      sennest I noticed that, too. On the first one, I think he was reaching for the rod to steady it with his right hand and inadvertently bumped it upward with his finger. I think the second one may have just been a twitch.

      Young people can be very good welders! When I was at Hobart the instructors were mostly skilled like Bob is. You take guys that age that have been around the world of welding and back 3 times they can whip a youngster into shape pretty quickly. Like Bob said though you will struggle if you don't follow instructions. These instructors are trying very hard to make you look like a 5 year welder in about 1 year, so the information comes fast and you don't spend forever on any one topic. After paying close attention to your instructor the next best thing to do is not to waste any of the time you are given for skills drills. That practice time is super important because these courses are so compressed! Bob Is super kind to make videos of this quality covering these topics on a free basis. He is teaching many kids who are paying good money to be there. Many of his videos look a lot like the Demos our instructors gave us at Hobart. Much respect to you Bob Moffatt, Tim

      I'll certainly try to do more with the students present. Most of the time we are shooting at times when students are not around. Nights, weekends, holiday breaks, etc.
      Are you wanting to go to a welding school? Where are you now?

    Thought the guy did a great job. Stuff happens like this often and all you can do is fix it and move on. His first pass ever on that new machine and it was filmed. Imagine both played into that small mistake.

    Woah - great wages. Locally here it seems like Welders max out about 18-22 dollars an hour.

      It's not taught in a lot of schools anymore, but Bob still teaches it to all his students. We have a few videos coming out in the near future on OA welding.

    My set up for open root pipe is 50-55 amps, electrode negative, 20-25 bevel, 1.5mm land, 3 -3.5 mm gap, with 3.2 electrode. Works like a charm.

      6010 3.2mm (1/8 inch) bohler ... But we use Fronius (transpocket 150 /1500 and 2500) machines that have 100 volts in open circuit. They can burn 1/8 rod at 48 amps (electrode -) with no problems. Very sharp/strong arc. Once I have tried that set up on Miller welder and it did not go as planed lol , arc was to soft and I did not like it. But I have seen 4 different setups for 6010 down hand pipe root form US , Canadian and EU welders , all different all works but this one works best for me.

      His job was in Nebraska over the summer. I think it was a contractor out of Oklahoma.

    Always buy a machine for the future. If you don't have AC you can't weld Ali.

      Dylan Bojumpkio watch our DC Aluminum video. While maybe not preferred, it is possible to weld AL with DC. Plus you could always go spool gun on this machine to do AL.

    Struggling and he makes 36.50$.... wtf making that money you shouldn't have to hold his hand. Like my boss said to a kid "where did you go to school tulsa welding school. Go get your money back. "
