@ThatGreenDayFreak, if I were ever wound up tightly enough to sing that B-flat, two things would happen: 1) I would instantly become constipated and unable to walk, and 2) I'd almost certainly blow a gasket just trying to hit it (so it would definitely not sound pretty at all).
A very meh rendition of this piece. Not sure if this singer was having an off night. He was definitely having issues in several places in this song, as evidenced by his having to take breaths in odd places that threw off the phrasing. He's extremely tense on the high note. Watch his face. You can see his veins bulging. Not to mention that his vibrato starts to slow noticeably while he holds that note. A sign that he didn't properly prepare for it. It's only a B flat. Any professional tenor should be able to hit that note without those kinds of issues. In the end, his voice is so shot that he has to flip to his falsetto to float that pianissimo, but his breath support is so haggard that it doesn't have the ping that it should.
I have just heard Amsel Elgort, who plays Tony in the WSS remake, sing Maria. He leaves out those central repetitions of Maria, they are beyond his voice. Aaron Tveit is an amazing real tenor with strength and sensitivity.
This is the best I've every heard Maria, not only sung, but acted. So connected. So moving. There are not enough adjectives to describe how gorgeous his interpretation is. Just stunning.
When I saw the recent movie, I loved Rachel Zeglar’s performance, but I found it hard to believe that she would stay with Tony based on Ansel Elgort’s performance. However, if Aaron Tveit played Tony, I would’ve totally understood why she would have wanted to stay with Tony after killing Bernardo 🤣
he was honestly awful. Rachel seemed very alive, but I couldn't feel anything from Ansel, both his acting and singing performances fell flat. Aaron's too old but would be infinitely more magnetic, I'm sure
Huh, I didn't feel that way at all. I think they both performed well. Ansel was a good and sensitive Tony. A bit tall for Rachel maybe, he was towering over her lol
Aaron Tveit, a name I'd never heard before Schmigadoon, is a real tenor. Maria is a test for the male voice. And his movement on stage is so effective, rather than standing in place for the entire song. He is a fabulous dancer in the Gene Kelly mode, I've recently discovered.
