I can't get over the fact that Maria, after knowing Tony only *ONE DAY*, still goes with him RIGHT after he murdered her brother. Okay, fine, but good Lord. lol

I feel bad for Natalie Wood though, she didn't know her voice was going to be completely dubbed and despite all the vocal training she went through, her voice still wasn't strong enough for the complex songs. The imagery in this scene is full of subtle, brilliant details. The camera is bathed in a pink light that matches the moment in the overture when “Maria” starts playing and the screen turns pink. The sides of the image are slightly blurred as Tony first starts singing - a clever technique used in many of Tony and Maria’s interactions throughout the film to visualize the fantasy world into which their passion transports them. And after you’ve seen the whole film, rewatching the shot of Tony singing in the playground is heartbreaking, because the very next night, he will die in Maria’s arms in that very playground.
How can be people so stupid to give dislikes to this beautiful classic song? I can not believe. One of most beautiful songs I have ever heard. Thank you, mister Leonard!
@Quora Shorts Not in the remake cause Ansel Elgort playing him will make me too uncomfortable and he has baggage attached 😂. The remake does like good, but Richard Beymer will always be the better Tony
This is a brilliant song. It was dubbed for this 1961 film. I just heard Amsel Elgort sing Maria - he is Tony in the 2021 film - and he lacks the strength of the singer who dubbed Tony in 1961. And he leaves out the series of Maria's that are most taxing for the voice. That is the true test of a tenor in this great song, or aria. But dubbing is no longer done, and Spielberg chose the best young actor who could sing creditably to play Tony in the new film. Amsel Elgort sings well, but the professional tenor who did the 1961 recording was great!
I watched this version and the 2021 version back to back. Even though Richard Beymer wasn't singing his own vocals, the original version (this one, the 1961 version) trumps the 2021 version, despite what a wonderful singer Ansel Elgort is -- and he really is an excellent singer. The 2021 version included several jokes (the janitor was the best one, looking at Tony like, "Ooookay, brother") -- but the jokes weren't needed. In the 1961 version, everyone fades into the background and Tony walks the streets singing Maria's name. It gets to me every time. Fantastic.
"West Side Story" was like a modern-day urban version of "Romeo and Juliet." Instead of being from rival families, the young couple in this story were from rival communities in New York City. It is one of the most romantic movies I've ever seen, although it is most unfortunate that it has a tragic ending to it. Then again, "Romeo and Juliet" ended tragically also. Therefore, I cannot really criticize the person who wrote the script to this movie of doing anything out of line.
I've heard different singers sing this song, but none of them seem to capture the emotions of a young man finding love for the first time like this version. ❤

This is gonna ruin the film for you like it did to me, but I guess I'll say it anyways. The actor playing Tony isn't the one actually singing sadly. :( He along with Natalie Wood who played Maria were sadly lip-syncing whenever they sang, and they were both dubbed by other actors. :(
This is such a beautiful movie. I love the singing and dancing. When Tony and Maria fell in love I felt like I fell in love with them. The ending is so tragic it's like a knife though your heart.
Even though I have never lived in a time like this, seeing the streets, color scheme and everything about the setting of the place makes me so nostalgic, of a simpler time, when things went by slowly but no less important. No iPhones, or excessive media, just the simplicity of life. Beautiful.
I love this song, beautiful music, beautiful sentiment. From the age of innocence I guess, I can see how some people can't relate to it now. All the music from this particular musical was brilliant for it's time.

This film is so beautiful, the tune of this song with the strings just tears my heart apart. Totally captures the feeling of love at first sight, it gives you goosebumps.
Please give credit to Jimmy Bryant! It is his voice that Breymer (who plays Tony) is lip synching to here. Bryant did all of the singing for Breymer, and did not get a screen credit, or big money. Marni Nixon was the voice for Natalie Wood, and had to fight the studio to get any royalties. (Bernstein ended up giving her a .25 percentage of his record royalties, so she did ok). The true brilliance of this musical movie is in the perfection of lip synching. No one in 1961 had any idea that so many of the stars were being dubbed by other singers. They were lip synching in just about every number. Even the great Rita Moreno was dubbed by Betty Wand and Nixon in most of her numbers. (In fairness, Moreno got sick, and one of her numbers required a much lower octave. It was Moreno singing in that great number “America”, that had such great choreography and dancing.) I mention this only because it puzzles me when we get all out of joint when we find out that singers were lip synching nowadays. The greatest musical movie of all time, West Side Story; which won 11 Academy Awards in 1961; was all lip synching to ghost singers. Did it matter? I would say “absolutely not”! There should have been an Academy award for the best ghost singers! Jimmy Bryant and Marni Nixon would have 3 or 4 each!
I cannot believe Mr Bryant did not get any screen credit for this breathtaking vocal, no one sings it better than him and many have tried but it is sung with warmth and passion and will Never be sung better by anyone else , this song and Somewhere blows my mind , I thank Bernstein forever for giving the world this score 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🥰🥰

This poor man he had so much misplaced hope in his heart I wanna give him a hug and protect him from the world’s problems 😢
😭😭😭😭
@Quora Shorts Not in the remake cause Ansel Elgort playing him will make me too uncomfortable and he has baggage attached 😂. The remake does like good, but Richard Beymer will always be the better Tony
@Quora Shorts Richard Beymer is alive lol (for now though as he is quite old)
@Quora Shorts Ah gotcha wasn’t sure what you meant
The brilliant and beautiful music of Leonard Bernstein. Timeless and landmarked music
Love Julian Ovendon’s rendition of this. Sung the way it should be sung. Thrilling.
Fantastic.
watched this for the first time when I was 8 with my mother... one of my all-time favorites.
no one has compared to this tonys voice on this song. guts me every time.🙏🏼💜
"West Side Story" was like a modern-day urban version of "Romeo and Juliet." Instead of being from rival families, the young couple in this story were from rival communities in New York City. It is one of the most romantic movies I've ever seen, although it is most unfortunate that it has a tragic ending to it. Then again, "Romeo and Juliet" ended tragically also. Therefore, I cannot really criticize the person who wrote the script to this movie of doing anything out of line.
ConsumerWarrior that was the point sis, read a book
lol...its supposed to be a modern version of romeo and juliet
@Mia Torres "Sis"? I'm a guy.
@@consumerwarrior1267 modern day talk. you'll get used to it.
Mia Torres no need to berate the man, he’s just trying to shed some light if someone didn’t understand the background
proud to be named after this song :)
Rest in Peace, Mr. Sondheim. You will be sorely missed. Thank you for West Side Story.
The beauty that is this song. What a blessing
There is nothing but the original!❤
Probably the most beautiful song ever written!!
The greatest musical ever made.
I've heard different singers sing this song, but none of them seem to capture the emotions of a young man finding love for the first time like this version. ❤

My favorite part of the movie he sing like an angle 😍😍
mabel dominguez *angel*
I'd love to sing like *A N A N G L E*
My favorite two favorite songs were "America" and "Maria". They have so much passion and emotion.
I grew up in that era. West side story is a classic and the music is beautiful.
Damn... instant goosebumbs when he starts singing :)
Even though I have never lived in a time like this, seeing the streets, color scheme and everything about the setting of the place makes me so nostalgic, of a simpler time, when things went by slowly but no less important. No iPhones, or excessive media, just the simplicity of life. Beautiful.
Definitely!
I feel so special when I listen it.
That's my name ♡♥♡ this is just soo cute
Too sweet
Maria You are so famous, they made a song of you! ;-)
Yo soy Bernardo: v
You must marry someone named tony!! 😂😂
Same!!!!!!!! They made a song about us!!!
I love this song, beautiful music, beautiful sentiment. From the age of innocence I guess, I can see how some people can't relate to it now. All the music from this particular musical was brilliant for it's time.
It is still loved and appreciated…by some.
My favorite song from west side story. Captures the moment you fall in love. Nothing like it.
The guy who dubbed for Tony sure had an outstandingly beautiful voice. I’m weak at the knees
Still one of the best looking movies ever
Rest In Peace Stephen Sondheim
For those who don't know, he film was primarily filmed here in NYC, in an area which was about to be demolished - and reborn as Lincoln Center.
¡Me encanta este tema!. ¡Es una preciosidad!. Muchísimas gracias por compartirlo.
¡María! :)

West Side Story....ten Academy awards...one of MANY great songs in the movie.
Wow. What an amazing piece of music. That is a melody that goes to a lot of musical worlds. Stunning.
Best love song, ever.
This film is so beautiful, the tune of this song with the strings just tears my heart apart. Totally captures the feeling of love at first sight, it gives you goosebumps.
My name is María because this movie and and I LOVE IT!
It was Moreno singing in that great number “America”, that had such great choreography and dancing.)
I mention this only because it puzzles me when we get all out of joint when we find out that singers were lip synching nowadays.
I didn't know he wasn't singing. Thank you.
I never care if the actors have to lip synch. I'm just pleased that these gems have been released out into the world
Russ Tamblyn was dubbed by Tucker Smith (Ice) in the "When You're a Jet" song.
Larry Kert sang "Maria" beautifully in the OBC 1957 production. I also love Johnny Mathis' beautiful recording .
Heart warming Song. I Love it
Sang this as a solo my junior year in highscool choir concert, killed it
The most beautiful SONG I've ever heard....MARIIIIIAAAAAAA
Thank you so much! ❤❤❤
Second time singing, “...and it’s almost like praying.” Behind him, a modern building, but with baroque arches cut into the steel & glass. Church-like. Brilliant set design.
Still the best rendition of this song I’ve heard. Beautiful!
I correspond with Richard once yearly on his birthday. He still lives on his late parent's farm near Fairfield Iowa. I'd forgotten how handsome he was back then. Talented, too.
The pure Magic of films from this era just sweep you away
I legit cried at this scene, btw I’m rlly emotional even though I’m a guy but this is my fav movie because of how beautiful it is!
