I got rid of 99% of my belongings (car included) in my 60's and moved to Florence, Italy, BY MYSELF, in 2017. I acquired my Italian citizenship last year and I have NEVER been happier. Stuff is just that, STUFF. I had come here for college in 2015, studied two years, then returned to California with an empty check in bag. If I couldn't get things in that bag or the ones I carried on the plane, it was goodbye. I had a storage unit FILLED with all my stuff - furniture, kitchen ware, electronics, etc.. My mantra was "when in doubt - throw it out"!

My children and grandchildren also live overseas. I’m 71, recently widowed and facing some of the issues you raise in this incredibly inspiring, yet down to earth video. I’m wanting anew start nearer to them, so a big Thank you for sharing your move with the world.
I’ve been ‘here’ before, but now I’m doing it on my own - which is at the core of my new adventure. Fifteen years ago, when my late husband retired we moved from California to the East Coast. I well remember that period of letting go of so much stuff in and surging forth to rebuild a life that I now am getting ready to free myself from. Some of it left with my husband’s death and now I want to re-embrace whatever my new life will bring. I’d mistakenly thought that I’d made our ‘forever’ home in a lovely community near the kids, but it all changed. I’m doing this step cautiously, because I suspect radical independent moves don’t get repeated too often at my age.
Whatever the days ahead bring, I’m grateful for the knowledge that others are doing this sort of thing too. Whether the motivation is a feeling of being stuck or a full stop like illness and death; if you’re the one still standing, it’s never too late to get going again.

This story resonates with me. Four years ago, my husband and I relocated 2000 miles away from Seattle. We only brought 2 suitcases, our electronics, important documents and of course our beloved beautiful mini schnauzers and a car full of stuff. It was very liberating to donate, sell, gift and throw away stuff. The amazing thing was that it ocurred to me to advertise on Craigslist "all house contents for sale for a flat fee". Incredible as it sounds, a nice gentleman shows up with $3,000 USD and a moving truck to free us from all our furniture, kitchen gadgets (pots and pans included). If you do the math, it is cheaper and infinitely simpler to buy things again than it is to haul your stuff 2000 miles away. Doing this saved us a lot of work, stress and a variety of logistic nightmares. It was also very exciting to go shopping for new furniture and have all new decor!!! We took our time to furnish our new home. It was fun to score great bargains via classified ads. It is unbelievable the number of great quality items your can get for pennies on the dollar (or free!)if you are patient. Good luck to all who read this! 👍

We moved from Cali to Portugal with my partner 3 months into pregnancy with 2 massive dogs (so had to do kennel training on top of it). Same thing, sold all our things, our cars, and got on the plane with only 2 suitcases each (we wanted to start fresh and the cost of containers was equivalent to re-buying everything new on the other side). Can so relate to this video. Doing all this while my partner was having morning sickness (which doesn't stop in the morning btw), was A LOT. Continuing the journey on the other side in Portugal was a lot too! We airbnb'd for months before we finally found a stable long term lease. But now we're so grateful for tour new life and so proud of ourselves for having cleared so much energetically for the arrival of our tiny baby 🙂
PS: your journey with paperwork is not over once you're in Portugal. Adminstration was a real pain in the butt for months after our arrival. It is a beautiful country but get ready for some of the most mismanaged administrations in the developed world. Some processes have delays of up to 2 years. Safe travels and many blessings.

So many memories for me in this video. In 1993, at 40, I resigned my position of 21 years, sold my home, cleared away everything I had managed to acquire in only 20 years; still a lot with a growing son who had been putting trash bags of his unwanted items in the attic-Surprise!! I moved to St Croix with only suitcases and twenty boxes. And in 2019 I moved once again back stateside and kept only a few larger items in a storage shed which I paid for upfront. And in August 2021 went back and cleared out all the remaining items. Put together a pallet for shipping to TN, where I had a Tiny built. To this day I continue to live as small and with as little as possible. Only what’s needed! And it is perfect. A 19’ travel trailer in a RV resort in FL and a Tiny escape in TN. And in two months taking off for Barcelona. And my end of November I will be in Barbados. From there thr plans are evolving. I’ve loved to travel and plan to do so for a very long time.
Congratulations on your Portugal move. It is the country I have chosen should I decide to move further away from states again. Blessings.

Thanks for sharing the moving experience. I became a minimalist a few years back and massively downsized on a lot of things. It is hard to let go of certain things such as photos etc, it is best to digitalize them. What really helped me was that I kept in mind that everything is temporary and will end. Nothing lasts forever. I get stuck with 3 to 5 tasks all at once sometimes and it can be very overwhelming.

I have never commented on any you tube video, but had to comment on yours. Wonderful videos! Please do more! Have a great deal of admiration for all you both have accomplished and will accomplish in Portugal. Loved the part of how the mind thinks a certain way based on past data, but that is limited and we can’t let ourselves succumb to this. That resonated a lot with me. The truth is there are endless wonderful possibilities that await us in any given situation.

I very much look forward to following your journey here. It’s clear you put a lot of thought into each word you express, while also creating visually beautiful content. A few years ago, I chose to leave a lifetime in Michigan to relocate to my son’s family’s driveway in L.A. with my travel trailer. Being close to my two grandsons is priceless. Family and community ties usually play a big part in making these life-altering decisions, but culture, values, and lifestyle are no less important. In the end, we weigh all the factors and make the best choice for us. Always, at any age or stage of life, it is our choice. Thank you for reminding us of this. More, please!

When I left my life in Brazil behind and moved to Europe something like this happened... People and situations showing up when I needed the most in a way it seemed like I was being watched and taken care of. I started trusting that everything would be ok. Some how I've come across your channel and I'm so glad I did! My wife and I are in a very similar situation as yourselves. Both hitting our 50's and feeling that there is more to life than to sit (quoting Pink Floyd) comfortably numb. We've decided to leave our very comfortable and financially stable life in Adelaide and up sticks and move to Sydney. Not exactly a massive cultural change but certainly a financial one not to mention having to accept that we'll be living in a small 2 bedroom apartment instead of a large family home! We too are starting to sell everything that we've accumulated over 30+ years of our life together. Stuff that we've both (myself more than my wife) become very emotionally attached to. It's proving far harder to do than I could have ever imagined.
It's heart warming to read (in the below comments) in those moments when you start questioning the sanity of your decision that so many other people who have made the decision to take the plunge and largely have no regrets even though they have no doubt faced challenges.
I look forward in following your journey both the highs the lows and the everything in between.
    Cheers

My husband and I moved from our cushy life in the PNW as well to Montreal and it was difficult beyond anything we ever imagined !!! We were giddy for all of two weeks before reality set in. Moving does suck. No matter where. You can't move into a permanent vacation. Planting roots takes time and there is no easy transition. But these experiences 100% do add value and preciousness to our lives. Comfort and stability are the end point for many people but there are some of us who must move forward in order to feel alive. The goodies in life are in experience!! Enjoy !!

Thank you for sharing....I plan to retire in a few years move south...and I remember it took me 3 months as a single lady and having a 1 bedroom apartment moving into a 2 bedroom condo...30 years later and cant image all the things I have now...I find comfort knowing I have time on my side that I can go threw my things now and slowly donate to charity, get rid of useless items and give to family...but I most admit I was beginning to feel the stress of just the thought of having to pack my belongings! Lesson to me...plan ahead and pace yourself! Enjoy your new life and home!

The Globetrotter purchase saved you DAYS of waiting for ppl to show up! Fabulous. I’ve moved two hrs after discovering my refrigerator stopped working. My renters were moving in the next day, and I was ready to LEAVE! I ordered a new one, sight unseen, and left the check in the kitchen. I had to trust they would bring it early that afternoon, install the ice maker water line & take the old one away. I was below Washington DC when I called & discovered all was well. Then, another hour later I remembered I’d left a bag of freeze- dried Magic Mushrooms inside the old one! I was mortified. No one said a word about it, and I continued on my way, thoroughly embarrassed, guessing the young guys who found them quietly hid them in their own vehicle at the appliance store for the rest of their shift.
    Best tip ever!🙄

New to you channel, this video was great. Thanks for the perspective, I am in my 50's too, but never owned anything remotely close to the stuff I have seen in you video. I am actually living in a tiny room with my wife, dreaming of moving to our own place. At this point, I would be happy if we could afford a separate living room and our own kitchen. It's weird and kind of disappointing looking back at my younger self and all the dreams that guy had. On a positive note, we still find ways to be happy, enjoy each other and making some kind of plans for our next chapter in life. By the way your property and house in Florida, seems amazing. Honestly I would probably want to spend my old age in a place like that. At the same time I admire your spirit of adventure and I am a bit jealous of both of you. Good and better things are just around the corner for you, I know. "Little angels", a great way to describe serendipity moments in life. Waiting to see your next steps. Cheers!

New subscriber here. Love your content. I moved to the Swiss Alps from the Berkshires in MA 15 years ago (after much world travel). Despite letting go of 90% of my possessions (donated to an animal shelter annual barn sale), I still had things to ship over to the tune of $7,000US. By the time the container arrived in Switzerland, I couldn't remember what was in the boxes - and I realised once unpacking that I neither wanted or needed 2/3rds of the stuff. What a waste of $7,000 (in my case). Fast forward to now - I let go of 90% of the rest (an animal charity shop in France), and am down to the bare minimum - not an extreme minimalist but on my way - I've never felt more free - plus let go of 95% of my furniture! My apartment is nothing but space and light. The only things of real value our my 16 year old Havanese dog, and my large photo collection (about 12 albums). The less I have, the more time to focus on what is really important in life. 'Posessions are in the saddle and ride mankind'. I have no regrets about letting it all go - and now only have what I absolutely need. We really need very little to be happy.

This is all so familiar.. in 2016 we made the decision to move abroad from Seattle. So much stuff!! All of this happened at the same time as my sweet sister was nearing the end of her battle with cancer....so flying to and from Ohio....during this...my heart breaking for her and her dear husband and sons....I've never done anything so hard. After our final sale and cleanout....we attended her funeral....we then drove across country to stay in Ohio for 6 weeks until we loved to Dubai.
