      How long does it usually take to drain? I hooked a hose to mine and it sounded like the draining got really slow. So I took the hose off to check it and it starting pouring water again.

    Install a 3/4" straight ball valve with a hose bib fitting for max flushing. Smaller valve openings can get plugged with sediment when flushing the tank.

    It is not always that easy to unscrew the bad part out of my 1994 water heater. The metal "nipple" part that connects to my water heater is impossible to unscrew it out. I used a heavy duty steel pipe wrench but still not able to screw out the steel nipple. The nipple is all mangled and twisted and beat. My last trick is to heat up that nipple with a propane torch and see if I can take that nipple out. If not, then I'm putting a new water heater in.

    There's no need to drain the water tank before changing that valve, just shut the heat off, use the hot water for a shower. Then shut off the cold water valve, and the tank vacuum will prevent any large quantity of water escaping.

    Where do i buy the replacement drain valve? Ive went to lowes, home depot and a local plumbing store and none of the drain valve i have. My water heater was made in 1991 and has a plastic drain. please help im lost.

    • @MegaSafetyFirst
      @MegaSafetyFirst  7 лет назад

      +Scott B. The water heater in the video also came with a plastic drain valve.
      I found the replacement at Home Depot, but not made of plastic. The new one has the same thread size and I didn't have any problems with it yet.

      Check Amazon. Search for water heater drain valve. I found one that is a full flow valve. It will let sediment come out easier. Sometimes the sediment can clog the drain valve.

    If the insulation is wet does that mean the tank is busted?

    how likely are those plastic water valve to break when you trying to remove them?

    • @MegaSafetyFirst
      @MegaSafetyFirst  4 года назад

      I wouldn't expect them to break. They are pretty sturdy.

      @dannyboy9254 4 года назад

      @@MegaSafetyFirst I never do nothing to my water heaters and they last like 8 to 10 years. I feel that if I try to service one ill end up with problems. with the pressure valve or water valve. would they last longer if I service them. I have 15 water heaters and I service non.

    • @dannyboy9254
      @dannyboy9254 4 года назад

      and also the sacrifice stick that is inside there is no way to remove them since the its all rooted all the way up that you can't put a wrench to remove it.

    • @MegaSafetyFirst

      I have a similar experience. My water heater is from 1996, with no maintenance except for the new valve. It still works perfectly with no sludge on the bottom.
      I am afraid to touch it now, thinking it will break down as soon as I try to do anything with it.

    I tried to drain the water but nothing comes out of the hose unless i have the cold water valve turned on to let the water in. any suggestion?

    • @MegaSafetyFirst
      @MegaSafetyFirst  7 лет назад

      +Stillphenom Did you try opening the hot water on one of your sinks?

    • @STILLPHENOM
      @STILLPHENOM 7 лет назад

      I did. when I shut the valve that runs into the tank i get nothing on the sink.... Another question is, the water going to the tank is cold right? why does it feel warm when I touch it? i've got second pipe going in as well(atleast its connected to the tank) and that one feels cold when i touch. which one is the one I should turn off?

    • @MegaSafetyFirst
      @MegaSafetyFirst  7 лет назад

      +Stillphenom You want to turn off the incoming cold water.
      The tank usually says hot / cold at the connections.
      At my water heater only the cold line has a shutoff valve, that makes them easy to destinguish.
      After shutting off the cold it is normal that no water comes out of the sink.
      You should first open the sink and then open the drain valve. The sink needs to stay open during the entire time so that air can get into the hot water tank. Otherwise the hot water is not coming out.
