- The Nerd reveals how some console add-ons were never worth owning, as he takes a look at the Sega CD - an add-on for the Sega Genesis - and finds out what the games made for it are like. This is Angry Video Game Nerd Episode 25.
In the late 1980s, Nintendo was working on CD-based add-on for the current console, the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. While initially partnering with Sony, they later tried it out with Philips. Even after both deals went south for Nintendo, Sega decided to try out the same kind of peripheral for their own system, the Sega Genesis (also known as the Sega Mega Drive). The first few years of the Sega CD seemed hopeful, with games that featured famous film actors and full-motion video. Initially, some people saw it as an evolution for video games, due to the games' advanced graphics and high production values. It wasn't long after the Sega CD was released, however, that people started realizing how unnecessary the add-on really was. Because the device was so unusual, it was hard to develop more "natural" video games, which is resulted in a slew of games known as "interactive movies."
In this episode, the Nerd will delve into the library of the Sega CD and see why it was such a commercial failure. He'll cover many titles, some of which are classic genres you'd expect on the Genesis, while others are failed experiments at making a movie out of a video game.

Full-motion videos are better off as skip-able cutscenes to better interact with the world and characters, not be like movies.
There is video thats not full motion. Back in the early days of slow computers and slower consoles there were all kinds of tricks to make the full frame of video look like it was moving when it really wasnt.
And then he found Plumbers Don’t Wear Ties and the circle was complete.

This thing was expensive. The genesis was $129, and this was $299! You’d be paying $428 for the whole set, and your electrical bills would be higher due to these requiring separate power cables.

I had a Sega CD. Only had the boxed in games. They were very hard to find even then I thought.

It's such a shame that the Sega CD suffered so much from marketing and an overall poor library because there was a lot of good stuff on there, too. Sonic CD, Snatcher, Popful Mail, Shining Force, Earthworm Jim Special Edition, the Ecco games, a ton of shoot 'em ups... So much good stuff. So much potential.

Yes, it's Corey Haim. Debbie "Blondie" Harry, and R. Lee Emmery (drill sergeant in Full Metal Jacket and the show Mail Call) were also in it. I never played it, but it somehow got re-released and has a 7/10 on Steam.

But not when he substitutes it for missing out the best games. Yes The Sega CD (or Mega CD, as it was known outside of the US) was a huge waste of time and was largely responsible for the Sega Saturn's failure because Sega still had half their programmers working on the CD and 32X titles. But the Sega CD did still have a couple of worthwhile titles. Snatcher was a huge cult classic.

With the video that's digitally remastered, you can get achievements/trophies for getting to view some parts of the game, even the so-called "controversial" bathroom scene that would lead to the 1993 Senate hearings that would eventually birth the ESRB we all know... that would later give the remasters a Teen rating. :)

Honestly the Sega CD's biggest fault was how hard it pushed the gimmick of full motion video, instead of its other improvements over the genesis. Sonic CD, like the video mentioned, was one of the few that actually tried to be a game, rather than an interactive video, saving the FVM feature for opening and closing scenes (which looked like garbage on the cd honestly. The computer port at least had them in full) The Ecco games were also great, granted they were ports from the Genesis version, but less buggy, slightly more beatable, and with a much better soundtrack.
The Sega CD could have been awesome if the developers making games for it utilized it differently. Snatcher, for example, is a fantastic game. It took advantage of the CD audio and it enhanced the overall game.

AVGN was the beginning of my passion for video game history. It’s crazy how much I learned just from these videos about the failed SEGA peripherals or the Jaguar. The Sega CD is actually one of my favorite systems, but I will admit some of that is nostalgia. The system is infested with way too many FMV games. However, some of the best 16-bit-era Sega console games are on it. Here is my must-have list that is worthy of just about any 16-bit Sega player: Snatcher, Sonic CD, Dark Wizard, Sol Feace, Popful Mail, Keio Flying Squadron, Lunar 1 and 2, and Final Fight CD (a much better port than the SNES version, with less censorship, bigger graphics, better music and an actual 2-player mode). I would rank these games in the top 5% of all Genesis/CD/32X games. Obviously the system will look like crap if you only focus on the FMV games, and there are sadly a lot to focus on, but to completely overlook the add-on system would be a crime.
I liked the FMV games, though many of them had superior ports on other systems and played better there.
sewer shark although heavy on the fmvs was rather enjoyable too. I loved lethal enforcers 1 and 2 on the system. with the light gun. Beats going to the arcade.
