I feel people don't understand why Mihawk changes his tune after Zoro tells him he defeated the baboons. He isn't impressed that Zoro beat the baboons he is impressed that he is willing to swallow his pride enough to ask Mihawk for help. Mihawk assumes that Zoro values his pride as a swordsman above all else, and to thus to beg someone like Mihawk, someone he has sworn to defeat and who previously humiliated him, to train him would be unthinkable. Mihawk thus assumes that because he is asking to be trained he must have lost to the baboons and thus just wants off the island. Zoro admitting he defeated the baboons shows Mihawk that he could leave the island whenever he wanted. Zoro is not asking for mere selfish reasons he is asking cause he wants to get stronger to help his friends, and to do that he has to throw away his pride and literally beg on his knees the biggest obstacle to his dream to train him, and that resolve from Zoro is what impresses Mihawk and makes him agree.

Maybe Zoro has him convinced that having a crew does make one stronger. He's imitating Zoro, even to the point that neither are captains of the crew they are a part of. It could that Mihawk is preparing to be stronger himself for their eventual fight. It could be that he's meeting Zoro at his level out of respect for clear progress of Zoro's friends. By the time this happens, Zoro has already proven his case that a strong individuals make for stronger friends, which was only proposed in this clip. Either way, Mihawk wants to bare himself to the sharp edge of a clear deciding moment as any respectable swordsman would.
the marines would deserve it though, in the cover arc, mihawk, perona and the baboons were working on agriculture. what would happen if a "stray" cannonball would hit the harvest?

The baboons can copy everything including armament and observation haki. The only thing they can't copy is something that is not learned....conquerers haki. The baboon with the big sword obviously has fought mihawk and lived. So i think the key to this type of training is being able to stop it at any time if things get too crazy with conquerers haki. Also i don't think it has been revealed but Mihawk and Zoro both have conquerers haki
It also got revealed that anyone who uses a supreme grade sword is a conqueror haki user(in the King fight it's stated that you need that haki to be able to use that sword), so it's a indirect way to confirm Mihawks is one since his sword is a supreme grade sword

Pathetic.” but when Zoro said he beat the baboons, Mihawk suddenly got confused. Zoro can leave the island anytime, but he still threw his pride to ask for training, which is what interested Mihawk. The parallel to Luffy and Boa was that Boa wondered if Luffy would pick getting a ship to Sabaody or freeing the Maiden Island girls from being stone.

He's sparring with someone who's techniques can be same as his so he has to do better every fight so they are the best training partner for him.

My theory is zoro didn’t actually beat the baboons by fighting, he used conqueres haki. Zoro was incredibly hurt and in no shape to fight baboons who are stronger than humans and mimic mihawk fighting style (some of them). Mihawk knew that he couldn’t beat them unless he used conqueres haki. Little foreshadow by oda since we know now it’s confirmed.
