A lesson that Don Krieg learned the HARD way... you may THINK you're ready with a fleet of ships, a small army at your command and the finest arms and equipment money can buy... but if you're an overconfident bully, The Grand Line will CHEW YOU UP AND SPIT YOU OUT.
Hell, it's why the Straw Hats faffed off for two years after the Paramount War... Paradise was just a warm-up. It was at Marineford that even a dumbass like Luffy realized "Okay... if we go to the New World as we are now, we are gonna get our ASSES handed to us. So let's reconvene in Saobody when we're ready to continue our journey." Level-grinding, basically. On the restaurant-ship Baratie, Mihawk was your basic Beef Gate... the guy who will stomp you into the ground if you're a low-level scrub. Though during the timeskip, Mihawk is ALSO the guy who teaches Zoro how to use Armament Haki... so his swords will stop breaking every time he tries to cut someone like a CP9 agent who can tense their muscles 'til they're stronger than bessamer-steel.

I felt like it was a bit of a missed opportunity. Krieg served so many purposes at this stage of the series. He was the big bad bounty in the east blue, chased back out of the grand line in shambles. He really was there to drive home just how AWFUL the grand line can be. The weather, the directions, and the random monsters, some in human skin, that you might stumble over. It made it clear that the grand line is a BIG DEAL and its not something to be entered with a stupid grin and breezy self confidence. Then he served to make the viewers (and straw hats) see how scary mihawk is, and how irrational events can be. His entire fleet slaughtered and him chased down to the baratie over a ruined nap. But it also shows us the determination of luffy and crew to fight, to keep pushing on, and show they can handle someone on kriegs level, only for zoro to be squashed by a mihawk that honestly LIKED the guy, and that makes it even more terrifying. I mean, if he got crushed that bad by a dude who likes and respects zoro and his goals and determination, as well as his outlook on being a swordsman, how bad would it have been had he been angry?
