Jonathan Burton's film 'Yes Mum' takes an emotive approach via a heartwrenching phone call from a young man to his mother. Jonathan is one of two winners in the 2012 Make a Film, Make a Difference (MAFMAD) competition.
The TAC's Make a Film, Make a Difference (MAFMAD) competition invites young filmmakers aged 25 and under to write a short film idea that will challenge young people's attitudes to driving and encourage them to look out for their mates.

I think this is the most influential, gut-wrenching short film I've ever watched.
I couldn't agree more mate. Holy shitballs.
He decided to call his mother instead, telling her he loved her, knowing this was the last call. So sad.
They WERE submerged. When the car is completely underwater, it's impossible to open the doors until the pressure is equalized - the car has to fill with water before the doors can be opened. It's possible that the next thing that happened was they DID open the doors, but whether they all were able to swim to the surface depends on how far underwater the car was. Presumably they knew there was no chance to survive on their own.
I like to believe most of them survived
I saw this on tv and I was sitting in between my mum and dad, mum nearly falling asleep on me and me and dad talking anyway when this came on the whole room went silent and no one said a word we just sat there in silent, everyone covered in goosebumps, no words were needed we just all sat closer to each other and cuddled, this has an amazing message and I hope it makes a difference
I cried... But I loved it. Makes me not want to drink and drive ever.
uh i think it was more about distractions like mobile phone usage but ok....
I find it funny how 30% of the comments is talking about how heartbreaking this is, 20% is talking about how unrealistic this is...and the other 50% is debating how they could've escaped from the car.
This makes me feel so sick in the stomach. Absolute worst nightmare
I think the story is that a young man has a accident because he was partying with his friends in his car. The man was so focused on having fun that he crashed into the sea. In his final moments, he calls his mom to say goodbye. Such a powerful video.
Proper procedure when this happens is to let the vehicle hit the bottom, unfasten all seatbelts, unlock all doors, open or break a window to flood the cab, open the doors and swim out, exhale on the way up.
Only problem is that car windows are The hardest to brake and when you panic you won’t be able to hold your breath that long to let the car sink
@@BigpurrEli he was panicking, but he was also able to make a minute long phone call. They very clearly had time, and honestly they probably lived through that. I carry a glass breaker in my car personally, but you can also you the seat heads to do it.
I was covered in goosebumps from head to toe, tears rolling down my face. I never want to imagine having to say my last goodbye to my parents.
I think you are (all) taking this a bit too literally. I gather that the young man on the phone is experiencing his last thoughts which are translated in a phone call with his mother. He is not really on the phone with her. He is driving distractedly with friends in the vehicle, which includes alcohol consumption. In their distraction, they find themselves in fatal situation. They are shown to be having a good time in the car, which is juxtaposed with his final thoughts and regrets. This is art.
actually i think it's just before and after, but whatever
Ryan Courtney ye cuz he drowns mate
i think theyre showing what led to whats happening as hes on the phone with his mom for the last time
no.. youre reading into that a bit too much, thats literally just flashbacks to show us what caused their dire situation. the phone call with the mother is real to make the situation hit you so much harder due to her real confusion and worry.
I think he actually is on the phone with his mum. When the car begins to sink he realises he has no chance of survival and takes his last moments to call the person he loves (his mum).
I'm not crying, I'm not! There's just someone cutting onions in the house!
Oh my god I cried when he cried because I thought of my mom and it's so sad!
No piece of art has affected me as much as this has. I couldn't even express how I felt after watching it. 10/10👏👏👏
Damn it australia, why do you have better ads than everywhere else.
i hate this ad so much it makes me cry everytime
Tashpurdy same
Tashpurdy this gives me anxiety
my heart sank
I think my heart was thrown to the ground and smashed into a million pieces T_T
I just saw this before seeing Gangstar Squad at the cinemas, balling my eyes out ;( so sad,
jordancornea why would they show it in the cinema damn
This is the only psa that made me actually cry
Aaaaand now I’m having an anxiety attack…great
I had goose bumps head to toe with tears falling down my face then my mum came in and i told her to watch and she had goosebumps and was teary to and after we just sat there crying for about 10mins
This is the best driving awareness advert I think I have ever seen :'( It really hit me...
My brothers name is Andrew, hit me hard
Wow, a really emotional and powerful film. Absolutely fantastically made. And such an important message
This would have to be one of TAC's most powerful adds yet
Very moving and powerful. Terrific performance from the young guy trapped in the car as he makes the last call to his Mum as he and his mates sink into the river. Reminds me of some of those 9/11 calls from people trapped in the WTC.
This problem can Evelyn be fixed, read the drivers Manuel, it tells you how to handle submerged cars, step1: stay calm. Step2: try to break the glass, the door won't open from the pressure of the water, step3: if the glass won't break wait till the car is fully submerged, then the pressure on the doors will be relieved, thus allowing you to open the doors, hope this helps for future catastrophes. Drive safely.
Best way to handle them is not to submerge them
Well they were drunk, so it might’ve been a bit hard to stay calm
I haven't cried this hard since I saw Marley and me..
This video is the reason I don't go on Mitchell hopes IMDB page much anymore I really get the story of this short film at first I thought "aww hes getting upset calling his mum while hes at uni" then I saw the water.......
This is my biggest fear. When I tell people about it they always make light of it. I started showing them this video and now they all agree with me how terrifying it would be to be in a situation like this.
According to mythbusters if you are ever in that situation wait until the last moment when the car fills with water to open the doors and swim on out. Can't recall exactly why but I think it had to do with the water pressure.
You won’t be pulled down with the car, but if it’s really deep water try to break the windows before it’s completely to the bottom.
wow..just saw this on tv, i stopped what i was doing and just all of a sudden felt really bad. very well written film!
Very good. As a film maker myself, I am amazed at this quality of work you did here. Great job!
Goosebumps from head to toe as I saw the water.... This will make me to never be distracted while driving.....
This is an amazing video, the way it was done and the emotion that was put in is just amazing. Great work guys :-)
This is fantastic!
I am currently exploring post watershed safety videos, in order to capture an impact-full safety video. It aims to harbour the importance and almost need we have to constantly be distracted whilst driving, and after watching your video, it hit the nail on the head. Exactly the emotions and story that I am also looking to emulate within my own production.
Well done.
That put me in tears.
Well done!
This ad really puts drink driving in perspective. Very well made
I remember when this video first came out, every time I went to the cinema they would always show this and it made me cry every time. and I went to the cinema all the time. and every time this was the video they always showed before the movie started. every time.
Just watched this on the tele, and had to come find it, wow!
Such a strong video. WoW. I just saw this on TV. Hit me really hard.
This is utterly gut-wrenching. Shiiiiiiit.
wow, i was watching this with my mom when it came on tv..
safe to say we were both in tears by the end of it :/ i love my mumaa
so do i
This tore my heart out
This was on tv last night, best short clip I have ever seen :)
They had at least 1min 55secs to get outta that car...
1) Why the fuck was he on the phone to his Mum, instead of 000?
2) He doesn't look or sound hurt...why is he not trying to get out of the car or help his friends?
3) Why is he so calm when he knows he's about to drown?
Good concept, poor execution. Only half the people watching this ad are thinking about the intent of the ad...the rest are thinking about the questions above. Having said that, every little bit helps.
When i first saw this on TV, I couldn't stop the goosebumps and tears.
This is one of the most horribly touching advertisement i've ever seen.
I cry every time I watch this, but that's the thing, I can't stop watching it on either its so good
I saw this for the first time about 20 minutes ago on tv and it completely broke my heart! I almost cried.. :/
Very touching film,,,i hope as a parent i never have a call like this from my son....Well done, this should be on tv free to air to promote responsibility to teens ,,,,well done !!
Saw this on MTV. So well made. Makes me sad every time I watch!
I cried.
This has left such an impression me
just saw this on my TV. very well made.
Great piece of film. As a teacher this is an imperative message.
Damn. This made me cry.
That's how I'd go out, raving in an underwater call
oh my god, this is... I have no words.
oh I feel so bad he never gets to see his mom anymore
Absolutely heartbreaking :(
Seriously had tears in my eyes :'(
A few things I took from this: 1) Andrew was somewhat distant from his family, and maybe alcohol had something to do with it.. 2) His mom was really worried about his frequent partying.. 3) He called his mom because he knew his time was running out.. 4) It goes without saying, drinking and driving is a recipe for trouble.
I wasn't insinuating that police magically appeared. :) I just meant he was on the phone to his mum for quite a while. If he called for an ambulance straight away there would have been a chance, as slim as it may have been, that he would have survived.. As opposed to no chance at all. I'm just saying it would be worth a shot.
Exactly. If one them called an ambulance, then they probably would be able to GPS the phone; and get a crew there quickly. They could open the doors once the car is filled with water. But they were in a terrible situation to be in regardless.
This makes me cry
Great video.
Wow that's so sad I'm so sorry to hear. I bet he was a really good bloke
I got chills all over. wow.
This breaks my heart
This scared me the first time I was watching it on t.v so I had to rewind it and watch it again!
i saw this on tv i nearly cried
Yep, nearly cried.
Actually, when you drive into a body of water deep enough to sink a car, the first thing to go is the electronics. Which means that if your doors were locked when you drove in, they will stay locked. Same goes for the windows. If the car is already submerged in the water and you break the windows, the pressure will rush all of the water into the car, making it difficult to swim out of a window. I'm not sure what the exact protocol is for breaking out of a sinking car.
oakgrove0811 maybe keep an ice pick or hammer in the glove compartment?
Tommorow this video will have 10 years...
This is really nice!!!!
This is the one ad that to this day still haunts me
So many goosebumps!
I saw this on tv and started crying
I CRIED
I saw this in the cinema yesterday and immediately started explaining to my girlfriend how to survive this situation. Also, depending on how far you are from civilization, if you call emergency services, someone could be to your aid in minutes. If he were saved from this rather escape-able situation, he wouldn't have to make a call in the first place.
I cried when i saw this on tv...
Chills went down my spine
Thanks for sharing your video
okay now that I look back at it doesn't make me cry it's sad but doesn't make me cry anymore thank God😃
This absolutely broke my heart... So very effective though
The pressure difference would have jammed the car doors shut until water completely filled up the car and thereby equalized the pressure, allowing for the car doors to be openned.
Why am I cutting onions :'(
that's so sad it made me cry😢😢😢
omg nearly cried
Mad me cry so hard but I love it so good and powerful
Wow this is powerful :(
I just watched this because there is the guy from descendants and now I'm going to cry this is so sad
Once the car has started to sink, it is not humanly possible to open the door again until the pressure between the inside and the outside of the car has been equalized.
Cried so much :/
Welp, that's Apple Maps for ya.
manly tears were shed
@oakgrove0811 Late reply but it's good to know for everyone. If you crash your car in water you have to stay calm and control your breathing, the doors will be impossible to open until the pressure inside the car is equal to the pressure outside. Meaning if you're completely submerged the entire car has to fill up with water. Don't waste your breath on trying to open the door until that happens, after that calmly open the door and swim to safety.
After this video I went through all MAFMAD winner films, and I realize, they suck. Damn, this one is just, is just, too touching. The music, the acting, the suspense, it is the best safety ads I ever seen.
you have to wait until the car is full with water. there is too much pressure
Oh my, this was actually quite gripping... :(
You think this video scared you? I'm a uni student from Australia named Andrew with blonde hair...
U graduated yet? How's life
I have a black heart and even I got sadden by this.
