We could get sotol in in Boquillas in the early 70s. Like pure spring water that kicked like a mule. Better than tequila. Thanks for the memory.

The native indigenous people of northern Mexico (Tarahumaras and Anazasis), for 800 years, have made sotol to perform religious ceremonies and as a medicinal remedy, since when cured with damiana it is invigorating, with wereke (medicinal root) it serves to control diabetes , with ojasé it soothes the stomach and as a digestive cured with green apple.

Appreciate your videos, including this one. Sotol is a great spirit and alternative to Tequila or Mezcal. Firstly, it should be noted that Marfa Spirits(in Marfa, of course) also produces Sotol, so Desert Door is not the only one in Texas. Secondly, Sotol being produced outside of Chihuahua where it originally came from is a bit of a controversial subject with claims of cultural appropriation by Chihuahuan producers and proponents. Desert Door has been largely untouched by the controversy, being so far from Chihuahua, but Marfa Sprits has not due to their proximity to Mexico. I have no real opinion either way other than giving credit where it is due. Sadly, Sotol producers in Chihuahua did not attain a denomination of origin for Sotol like Tequila and Mezcal. For more info, search "The Battle Over Sotol in Marfa, Texas".

Sotol, like Tequila, Mezcal, and Champagne, has a designation of origin. In order to be able to call it Sotol, it has to be from Chihuahua, Durango, or Coahuila, Mexico. It is not Sotol if it's made in Texas.

    Cultural and product appropriation.
