to paraphrase Uncle Atom with Tabletop Minions, "Every game is model agnostic, if you believe in yourself." Unless you are going to official tournaments, you can play whatever with whatever, as long as its within reason, like you mention. Back when I started with WH 40k 2E, I used soo many paperback books for my Imperial Guard tanks cause I didn't have that kind of money as a kid. If you produce a reasonable WYSIWYG army of alternate sculpts for a casual game, and That Guy across the table gives you grief cause they aren't official models, that's a player culture problem, not a game system problem. Otherwise, GW aint breaking down folks doors to stop them from playing.

Fitz, model agnostic was always the standard in the wargaming hobby up until about 40K 2nd edition and WFB 3rd. Leaving aside the historical side of the hobby and the prehistoric pioneers of the '60s and '70s, if you wanted to play a SF or fantasy wargame, it was assumed I could use whatever suitable figures you could find. Even WH40k: Rogue Trader and WFB 2nd . Even where figure companies made minis for a specific game, the idea that you could ONLY use those figures was completely unheard of.
GW introduced the idea of "official minis only" to force players to spend their whole hobby budget with them rather than sharing it with any other figure makers. This became the industry standard for high production value games, but there's always been a solid core of mini-agnostic games out there, mainly in the indie space, but a few higher profile companies too, like Ground Zero Games.
Honestly the current rise in popular awareness of mini agnostic games isn't because they're a new thing, it's just a return to sanity that synergises nicely with the advent of 3d printing. It's really a new golden age where we can make our hobby truly ours again, instead of being limited to what one company is pushing to maximise profits.

That was a bit before my time 😊
My earliest war games were chit based games and I didn't see miniatures until the very end of 2nd edition 40k

This is interesting. I'm working on adapting my old GW OG space marines to something. What you're talking about is basically what I need to do with them.

One thing about OPR is that because all the systems work in pretty much the same way, and points costs too, you can port unit rules from one army to another if you think it fits. For those scorpions, you could probably take a good chunk of ideas from the Alien Hives in GDF...

I think I'm at 100 scorpions but they are troop sized. (halloween a dozen for a buck) I have many more like TITAN SIZED. They are work in progress. Two based off the latest ACTUAL scorpions and 3 skeleton scorpions Halloween 8" long. Those will get Hudas and bits to make them less toy like. I was thinking (and still may ) turn those 100 into centart style with skeleton torsos. We'll see I should send you a pick of all my scorpions just for fun:)

Let's invent the coffee cup that makes coffee cold. Wait listen, we pour it in hot and it cools it to a more drinkable temp quicker.
