Forget the Sony RX100 M4, the Lumix is just amazing!! Build is great and the shots are amazing, the detail is unheard of! Sony to me is just to bright in all shots compared to the Lumix. More natural settings default. Always was a Sony fan, but Lumix took me by storm with this one, A M A Z I N G!!!!
I'm confused, you compare the EVFs and say the Sony is better because of left/right eye dominance, but the EVFs are located exactly the same place above the screen, you're going to be smushing nose against the screen with the Sony too.
Just to point out, the TZ100 dose have a limited slow motion feature at 100 frames per sec. at full HD. Also the body and front ring are metal not plastic.
I really would have preferred a sample of image quality of Sony HX90 Vs TZ80 as ultimately this is what most people would like to see. If you have such a video please let me know thanks. The trick is to shoot various objects using say the program auto mode and see which gives better results.
Waiting for my TZ100 (ZS100) to arrive - I'm not a photographer but I want a quality yet versatile camera as I love travelling. Cant wait to get going. Thanks for the video :-)
The DMC-ZS100 is a great camera. Loaded with features more than I think I will ever use. The picture and video quality are excellent. I have not tried the Sony but the zoom lens on the Lumix makes me favor it. Plastic body is no problem one has to be careful regardless of body makeup. I am sure the Sony is excellent as well.
I had a Sony RX100 iv and replaced it with the Panasonic TZ100 (U.K. version of the ZS100) after only six weeks. The Sony is limited in its zoom reach and I found the pop up EVF more of an inconvenience to use, rather than adding proper value to the camera. On the other hand the Panasonic has it all, the zoom, the picture quality plus an instantly accessable EVF, albeit being somewhat smaller (I'm a spectacle wearer and have no issues what so ever). I do feel this guy is slightly Sony biased, personally, the Panasonic is by far the better camera. As a point to note, although this guy says the build quality of the Panasonic isnt up to that of the Sony. The Panasonic is very solid and very well engineered, being an engineer myself, I'm qualified enough to say so. So save your hard earned pennies and buy the much better value Panasonic.
Great review!! I am torn between these two cameras. The Lumix would be an idea travel camera for my wife, but I secretly lust for the SONY as a B or C camera for my SONY FS5. I like the SONY's ability to shoot SLOG (externally, as internal 8 bit sucks for SLOG), slomo and the built in ND filter (why don't more camera's have this???), but I think the Lumix is a better, more flexible fit for my wife. The difference in cost isn't a deterrent, but I have to cater to my wife's need for a travel camera more than my video needs. Again, thanks for the review. Lots of very valid information for the sake of comparisons between these two products.
Thanks for the comparison. There is a BIG problem with the ZS100. It has no stabilization in 4k and possibly somewhat dubious stabilization in 1080. This feature is a huge importance for any owner of a compact camera used for travel and video, but I cannot find a single, properly done demonstration of this anywhere on any review. There are some who attempt it but they either point the camera at themselves or zoom in far too much to give the stabilization a chance to show at its best. I suspect the ZS100 and ZS200 have flawed image stabilization but I hope to be proved wrong.
for me good comparison -- watched the entire -- a D800 user -- Nikon going way back but need something to put in my running shorts pocket. thanks - like the fact that the zoom goes to 250 and the touch screen. good review
I'm a very simple and know not-a-thing about photography person. I just want a simple, easy to use (literally point and shoot, and wanna see the picture on the camera screen, nothing more). All I need is the picture quality a bit above iPhone. Few years ago, I bought a very basic Sony WX150, super fast to turn on and off, great just simple point and shoot on EASY mode. WX150 was so pocket friendly, I bought its "twin" the QX10. Both WX150 and QX10 was sooo small and easy to use, I actually took over 2,000 pix when I was in Rome and Vatican. I would love the RX100IV, but Dear Sony, you just priced me out of the game. Hello Panasonic, we're going to Paris together. I like it cheap! (okayyy fine, affordable, price-friendly blah, blah, blah).
Down to, always for me, image quality, so we wait for cameras web site comparisons. I know they have the same sensor, but Panasonics are often noisier and less sharp. If comparable though, I'll indeed pass on selfie LCD and 4K for a touch screen and 10x, not to mention that fascinating (yet unproven though) post-focus. Great stuff as always though Sir, thanks!
I noticed that when you turned on both cameras, the color balance of the SONY's screen has a red/magenta cast, while the Lumix screen matched the desktop. Its possible that the white balance was set to something different on the SONY, but that wouldn't cause it to go red/magenta. What are your thoughts about the color accuracy of the screens on these cameras? Have you experienced over heating issues with the RX100?
bought the panasonic in 2016. As a person who needed the store owner to set the camera and as a person who know only how to point and shoot. i realy think the panasonic offer wider range of use.
Any ideas on the following? Im looking for a big sensor compact camera. I have the rx100m3 in mind, but I stumbled across the Nikon DL24-85. Which one would you choose? Also, is there anything in that size-range with a bigger sensor? the Lx-100 seems to be the only thing that I can find, but, as I read earlier, the sony outperforms the lx-100 in image quality even with the smaller sensor.
Don't confuse the metal body on the RX100 with build quality. It's a very thin alloy which marks and dents easily. I dropped mine whilst it was in a thick leather case from about 16" onto a hard table and it broke (£130 repair). My friend took his to the beach and a gust of wind blew fine sand into the air - his had to go back to Sony too. Yes the Sony is a marvel, but it's too fragile to take everywhere. The Sony sensor is stacked and is slightly superior IMHO. Also the bright lens is a plus, the viewfinder is merely a wonderful novelty on a camera of this size and for the very rare occasions you actually need it, the Lumix one works fine. Shame about the screen not flipping, that's a real minus, but if you're into video, the zoom and 5-axis IS on the Lumix, combined with it's price makes it a no-brainer.
What concerns me most is taking photos of birds in tree's in not the most perfect of light conditions. The lumix wins on that. The 250mm equivalent zoom lens is it. Ok we have people that'd want a constant f2.8 lens but professionals know that this type of lens on a camera like this would be big, heavy and expensive. It would at least double the cost and weight. Therefore totally defeating the object of it being a pocket camera or reasonable size weight and price. On top of that it wouldn't be worth trying to make as so few people would buy it. Understanding the technical aspects of photography and the development of multimillion dollar business are 2 separate thing's
I've been looking at the RX100 M3 and the Canon G7X M2. But now I see the Limix ZS100. We travel and take a mixture of stills and video. The zoom is very appealing to me but the lack of an articulating screen is a let down. Which one performs better overall? I was looking for a G7X vs ZS100 comparison.
Thanks for this video. Panasonic has a interesting lineup or line of camera products. The menu system, 4K, Post Focus/Focus Stacking, Panasonic Touchscreen are excellent. Bridge: Hope #Panasonic #Lumix will update the FZ2000/FZ2500/FZH1. Advanced Compact 1" sensor size: All-in-on-Body - Would be very interesting if Panasonic could combine all the good features of Panasonic Lumix DC-ZS200, Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX10 in one body and add : * Articulated TouchScreen ( Tilting or fully articulated). I think Vloggers love fully articulated. (LX10 = Yes - EVF, ZS200 = No) * EVF (LX10 = No - ZS200 = Yes) * Hotshoe ( (LX10 = No - ZS200 = No) * Mic jack (LX10 = No - ZS200 = No) * Headphones jack (LX10 = No - ZS200 = No) * Flash (LX10 = Yes - EVF, ZS200 = Yes) * Focal Length : 20mm to XXmm (FF Equivalent) - Smarphones still cannot beat digital cameras with their optics. I think the 1" sensor, compact offering opportunities to do live feed, the new Shoot+Edit_in_camera+Share (apps getting better) are a good way to put a technology gap between smartphones and digital compact cameras. The All-In-One-Body is a key. Thanks.
Neither has weather sealing? And you mentioned you liked the Sony's LCD better, but that shot shows a strong purple cast to the Sony LCD that's not visible in the Panasonic. (Maybe not LCD issue but difference in white balance?)
Hi! Can you compare the shooting quality of ZS100 vs RX100 M6? They has ~similar zoom range but not the price. Can Mark 6 do better photographs at evening time than ZS100?
Helo. You Said Panasonic is Build for video. Ok Thats good but:There is no optimal stabilisator By 4K Videos and its nessesery specially when 10• zoom!!! Now my Question: is there a Big difference in videoquality in the Monitor when filming 4h and Full HD by this camera? (Can a Person See a Big difference in quality when he watch 4k and Full HD video in a labtop screen?) thankyou
At 3 min you say the Sony EFV is superior. The Lumix EFV stands out from the screen more than the sony, and you can turn off the touch screen when using the EFV. Don't agree with those two comments. Both are great cameras, not sure the Sony of $250-$300 better performing. The high-speed 4K video/photo on the Lumix is great. Also, it is metal, not plastic. Maybe you should take this video down.
Yes it does, quite easily without your finger getting in the way. Again, sorry for the late response but I did just buy my camera in Feb 2020. Hope this helps others though.
Could you talk about IQ in those two cameras? DPReview posted a studio comparison and the TZ100 seems a lot less sharp than the RX. www.dpreview.com/reviews/power-zoom-panasonic-lumix-dmc-zs100-tz100-review/6
what is the record time in 4k as we known the sony rx100 over heats and only lets you shoot 5 mins of 4k, does the ZS100 offer up to 29 minutes recording time with no over heat issues, meaning you could vlog in 4k?
Hi, I do have the Fuji XT2 but for more light travel and family vacation I want a lighter set up... woudl you recommend this set up Sony RX100M3 & HX90V or the Panasonic TZ101... price wise I would end up spending the same here...so it comes down to quality of pictures..I am not a video shooter...still is what I like..thanks

The Lumix has ridiculously good stabilization in FHD and 4K, the 5 axis stabilization is just amazing at how it well it copes with even *deliberate* shaking. This also helps when taking long focal length photos, to get lower stops and keep large depths of field in focus too. I shot a Dynamic B&W photo with a 2.25 mile depth of field at 79mm and everything from the stones in front of me to the mountain 2.25 miles away was in focus.
Yes, Sony has an App., but there you cannot control all camera-function, as Stefan Wiesner pointed out! The Penasonic App is the best on the market! :D
Hi Bob, I just bought this ZS100 a week ago and found this review. I set my camera to 70mm and the best aperture it can achieve is f/4.5 at this setting. I know this may be too late to help you make a decision, but hopefully it can help others wanting to know. Even at f/4.5, you can set the ISO to 1600 or 3200 and still have excellent resolution. I am truly loving this little camera over my Pentax K-3 DSLR (version 1) for a travel camera as it is way lighter and quite versatile. Oh yes, I also do not need to carry around 3 lenses with me everywhere I go.
Forget the Sony RX100 M4, the Lumix is just amazing!! Build is great and the shots are amazing, the detail is unheard of! Sony to me is just to bright in all shots compared to the Lumix. Great rundown of these two cameras. I chose the Sony and do love it. It all came down to the speed of the glass.
Just to point out, the TZ100 dose have a limited slow motion feature at 100 frames per sec. at full HD. Also the body and front ring are metal not plastic.

I visited the Adorama Superstore the other day. I like the Panasonic DMC-ZS100S. I have plans to acquire this camera in July or August.

which machine has the best stabilization
a washing machine
Micky P ah
👏🏻 the tz100 the macro is better. the battery is much better. photo quality is the same i have bote cameras.

On the Panasonic it's says made in china at the bottom because they are using some parts from the factory in china but it's actually
made in Japan
Under your iPhone, it said Make in China too. its 2020 now. buddy.
This is such a good review. Good job man

If cost was not an issue or basically they were the same price which one would you go for? My biggest holdup is the focal length 1.8 versus 2.8
Which one has the best image quality?
Thank you.
the smaller f value which is the bigger aperture, sony definitely beat panasonic on the aperture
Ed need your opinion on which would you choose. Sony m4 or zs100.
bought the panasonic in 2016. As a person who needed the store owner to set the camera and as a person who know only how to point and shoot. i realy think the panasonic offer wider range of use.
A video on managing 4 bursts would be helpful, I have struggled with this

Great review compare, but you kept calling Lumix XS100, not ZS100

Nice review, I still don't know which of the 2 I'd be more likely to buy.
Hi how ru? Can u do one ZS100 vs LF1 too with pictures samples please !
I'm glad Sony hasn't taken on touch screen. +1 for that.
Thanks for this video.

no footage comparison?
Does the pop up flash on the zs100 allow you to point it up or at an angle. ?
Yes it does, quite easily without your finger getting in the way. Again, sorry for the late response but I did just buy my camera in Feb 2020. Hope this helps others though.

Panasonic hands down :)
hi thanks for the vid , but how long can the lumix can shoot in 4k vid mode
20 minuts
how much 4k can panasonic do

Very nice review! Thank you
Yeah, Sony made the desk look bluish and it won't look only on the display that way. White balance on Sony cameras is kinda strange...
Does the Panasonic have a built in ND? Safe to assume it charges via USB like the Sony.
+edshotsdotcodotuk No built in ND.
How did you get the grip for the rx100iv?
now the ZS100 is $549 - Sony is hailed for something amazing - a feat to fit their lens - with their new RX100 VI at 24-200mm range - yet in 2016 the Zs100 had 25-250mm and now the Zs200 with 25-360mm - both with 20mp 1 inch sensor
The key is one needs both and Sony as the LX10 and RX100IV is more of a comparison as focal lengths so different - so Sony RX100 M V and RX100m VI - or the Panasonic Lumix LX10 and ZS200 -
A point with fixed EVF - is faster access VS having to push up EVF so not all better - but yes higher res
(LX10 $547 ZS100 $549) (RX100mv $948 RX100 m VI $1200 ) so big big price difference -
How to take L picture during videoing on ZS100?
i think canon g7x mark 2 competes with the rx100 series
Very helpful, thanks!
I got the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS60, then I later got the Sony RX100V.
so?
Whens the Leica version coming out?
What about the huge pink elephant in the closet ?
It is a "compact" camera. Size matters and the Sony is obviously smaller.
I would go for lumix tz100
Bouth is good camera but Its diffrent in price. I have cameras from Sony; I have Rx100 mark 1 and HDR-AZ1. Two good camera from Sony. But whoo is best In video/Film? Sony is smallest. I want 1 camera fore Foto/Film. So whoo is best?
I wonder how the panasonic does with video, if there is continuous focusing, moiree/artifacts or not like in the other panasonics (FZ1000, FZ300)
Hei, I Wonder about that to. Whoo is best on video? Panasonic have no stabilitation. You put that on later when film redigate on computer. Sony Rx100 mark 4 is smaller but mutch moore exspencive. I want a littel camera whoo also are good in video/Film.
***** me too
I have Sony Rx100 the first and It make good video. Therfore mark 4 will be super but its very exspencive.
***** good video when there is movement too? sports? Have you maybe uploaded some? I have seen so much distortion and un-consistent focusing in panasonic videos these days. ZS100 seems to do better, but the glass isn´t as nice, doesn´t give sharp images at al
i like Sony looks cool smaller and great camera
Which one has better stabilization on 1080p?
The Lumix has ridiculously good stabilization in FHD and 4K, the 5 axis stabilization is just amazing at how it well it copes with even *deliberate* shaking. This also helps when taking long focal length photos, to get lower stops and keep large depths of field in focus too. I shot a Dynamic B&W photo with a 2.25 mile depth of field at 79mm and everything from the stones in front of me to the mountain 2.25 miles away was in focus.
Second control ring on the Panasonic
the panasonic would be my choice if it had the selfie screen lol
With the Panasonic App and your Smartphone you have your selfie screen. Something Sony can only dream of! :D
MusikPiratCH Sony has that
Yes, Sony has an App., but there you cannot control all camera-function, as Stefan Wiesner pointed out! The Penasonic App is the best on the market! :D
you can also control the camera with the app. You must not have used a sony camera?
ALL camara-functions? I don't believe Stefan Wiesner wasn't telling the truth! :D
Predominantly plastic? The dents and silver showing on my ZS100 say otherwise
Loving my sony
Panasonic ✌️
Well
Having owned both the Sony is vastly overated and overpriced. Only advantage is a faster lens.
The Lumix is "not as well made"?????????????
Panasonic is a better camera. How you build a camera with no touch screen. Throw the Sony away
Just because Sony is over priced, u should go for Panasonic...
If your budget only supports Panasonic then I agree.
So what is the Lumix aperture @ 70mm? is it also f/2.8?
