Yeah, I think the IR is actually a pretty sleek boot and very flexible. Slim tapered jeans with a pair of White's or Nicks though would be an absolute no.
Outfits are good, but speaking as someone from the west coast, I don't think the high cuff looks that great. Kinda makes it look like you have a long torso and short legs. The fatigues pants were what I would consider the perfect length.
I get that a smaller boot would look fine with a taper, but how is it bad with a wider leg? seems like wider would work with most round boots like this
To me, it's about the overall proportions, but primarily the boot length. All other things being equal, if I wore a size 11 instead of a size 8, the proportions with respect to the same pair of pants (as well as overall body shape and height) would be quite different. I've found that for me, as a size 8, any leg opening wider than 8.5" (or 9" at a push) tends to swamp my boots and make my feet look excessively small ... that's essentially the same effect but in reverse as wearing slim leg pants with larger size boots. There's plenty of pics out there of dudes wearing pants that swamp their shoes - it's not a look that I like at all. (Not saying that's the case in this vid though). FWIW, my current fav pants with my IR are RGT Stanton (slim straight) and Taylor Stitch Democratic Foundation.
There's next to nothing that can't go with black. Brown works with black, I never understood this idea that brown boots shouldn't be worn with black jeans. Maybe the thought goes to dressier black pants? Even still, brown leather shoes/boots aren't that bit a deal imo
I typically wear black jeans with my brown Red Wing boots, and I don't think twice about it. Anyone who says that you shouldn't wear brown boots with black jeans won't be able to explain why, and that says it all to me about how arbitrary these dress standards are.
yeah I think it stems from the 'no brown leather shoes with a black suit' rule, which is a much more unbreakable rule than the 'no brown boots with black jeans' one. I never wear brown boots with black jeans myself but that's just because I have a zillion pairs of boots so I have a lot of options, like I say in the video I wouldn't judge someone for not owning multiple pairs of $350 boots hah
I would prefer it, if the title wouldn't be auto-translated. Sometimes the translation is of (in your case it has translated "fit" into a german variant of "a fit of sth"). At least google no longer selects the automatically translated audio track for the videos. Otherwise a great video. The Iron Rangers (or rather the blacksmith?) are on my radar for a while now :)
Wonder Looper’s absolutely amazing hoodies can make a great topper to an outfit with IR’s! Heavy and highly textured denim and a classic white T and that’s a solid fit
Re: 1:54 - to be fair you're still going to encounter a lot of residual 2010s Hipsterdom online where we wore Iron Rangers, 875s etc with skinny & tapered leg jeans. That was our culture, may it rest in peace
Nice to see you wearing wider cuts to your jeans. Those tapered skinny jeans you've been reviewing for years weren't doing you any favors. The looser cuts look great
I’ve been loving the new format with the outfit videos! Also every time I look at the Merz chinos online it seems they have really weird proportions. They look good quality but I don’t think they’d fit my proportions unfortunately
I originally shot all the outfits in that room (all purpose room in my building) but I reshot it and put the bad outfits in the bad background to underscore the badness
I actually agree that the IRs are slim. When comparing them to my Redwing moc toes, these boots definitely look like I should have my slimmer jeans/pants on (not skinny). I actually think the jeans you're wearing to show what NOT to wear look way WAY better than those wide leg jeans.
Not a fan of the flood pant look, l have to roll up my jeans cause I’m on the short side but loose fitting jeans flopping around looks goofy …at least to me.
Having grown up in the '60s, through just about every fashion iteration of pant width and height, the one thing I could never allow myself tomorrow wear are straight leg or wide leg trousers cut or hemmed high like you have them. It's perfectly fashionable right now and perfectly acceptable, but if you have been scarred by the chants of FLOOD PANTS ! when you were outgrowing yours as a kid, or they came out of the dryer too short, you will never be the same and be able to comfortably wear this style. But a thin or wide cuff just above or at the break, exquisite. Tapered or slim tapered, great high or real high, depending on the footwear. But to me the wide and high with boots look is as ridiculous, unflattering, and 'fashionable ' rather than objectively and aesthetically good looking as skinny pants and boots was a few years ago. No one looked remotely good in them, most looked outright silly, but everyone wore them and no one minded because, fashion. To me the mark of a truly well dressed man or woman is one who refuses to wear something that's in fashion if it doesn't suit them or if it's an idiotic trend, and someone who will wear something that looks amazing even if it's not in fashion, or never was. The latter are the ones that set trends and are fashion leaders, it takes confidence and flair, and the right occasions, of course, but it's something to consider if you care about clothes. As a lover of vintage clothing since my teens, I was laughed at in my 20s by a friend because I wore Converse Jack Purcells, only to have a bigger laugh when I complemented him on his own pair a year later when they were in fashion, as one example. It's all for fun in the end, but being original is it's own reward, as long as you don't take yourself too seriously.
I disagree with the ideal fit for pants. Skinny is completely unacceptable, but I don’t think the wide leg openings on your pants work either. Despite Iron Ranger being a little chunky, they are still slim enough they look best with a pants / jeans with a bit of a taper.
I think it's just that he has them cuffed weirdly high. At their normal length, with maybe the equivalent of a quarter break, with the hem resting on the instep, straight leg pants are the way to go. Heritage footwear isn't meant to be worn with pants with the anklebones below the hem.
@@Antenox That seems to be some preference of a lot of raw denim people recently. I don't like the looks at all and just think it looks goofy. The way the pants just hover and weirdly move around just isn't for me at all. Its super trendy and I'm not about trendy. Style>Fashion trends forever.
@@rangertx4161 I think it started becoming a fashion thing with the selvedge denim crowd showing off the selvedge stitches. And to a degree it can look good as an accessory thing, but the pants should still never be THAT short. Jeans are two wide. Slim fit is still the way to go. It looks weird with jeans that wide. Those blue chinos are not flattering too. I wear a 36 waist, I wish I can wear 33inches again. You look like you are wearing 36 waist chinos like me, and I’m guessing your waist is not 36 in. Those blue chinos, it makes you look funny honestly. You used to wear slim fit pants, what happened? I think you are experimenting with looser fit pants, but honestly man, slim fit still fits you best! The Buck Mason isn’t good too. Iron Rangers are slim compared to the Thursday Hero!
I concur 100%. To my eye, most of the pants legs are 1-2 inches short . And the cuffed pants make the look worse . Towards the end of the video, there were a couple of pants with no cuff and the right length- looks a lot better !
I can back up Nick here and say that everyone under 40 here in Chicago cuffs their pants to hit just over the top of their boots like in the video. It’s like the new way to show off the footwear now that skinny cuts are finally loosing up. And I’m here for it
@@jasonkrasowski4673 I like the 'showing off the boots' idea in theory, and I wore my jeans like that for a while, but I've gone back to having the cuff sit on the boot - I feel more comfortable that way and my legs look longer. @@jasonkrasowski4673 You're showing off your boots and making your pants look goofy in the process. IDK, its a fashion trend that will die off, I just think it looks silly as hell.
This is why I prefer wearing all black from the feet up, head to toe. Because you won’t notice some weird flaws with my outfits like if boots look like clown shoes, or pants are too wide or too tapered, and if my outfits are just too “busy”or “colorful” with textures, patterns, or colors. I think that's "boomer" in the sense of anyone older than Gen Z being a boomer. It's language-mangling for sure, but where would the internet be without that.
@12point131 As far as this Millennial remembers it, baggy jeans were a fashion statement well into the 2000's. So maybe Gen x weren't exactly the Kings so to speak. But since fashion comes in cycles Gen Z are currently pretty damn fond of extremely wide and baggy jeans. Many of the fashion people I follow are young Millennials/ old Gen Z talking about how the current baggy trend is waning significantly

I will say a tapered fit jean or pant goes ok with the IRs. Not thing too tight. I need to get one of those chore coats.
Naked and Famous has some great chore coats in both zip and button versions as well as heavy denim, light denim, wool and canvas.
yeah it's not the end of the world if you wear a taper. skinny jeans are a stretch though (so to speak)
Yeah, I think the IR is actually a pretty sleek boot and very flexible. Slim tapered jeans with a pair of White's or Nicks though would be an absolute no.
I like the Green and Black jacket and Black jeans the best. . Merry Christmas Nick...looking forward to new in the new year.
Great vid Nick! Do you think you can do a vid like this on the 875 moc toes?
yeah! i mean these are just all good boot outfits and the video would be pretty similar but I think I will anyway hehe
I'd say the same with the Blacksmiths, since they do give off less work aesthetic and more refined
Outfits are good, but speaking as someone from the west coast, I don't think the high cuff looks that great. Kinda makes it look like you have a long torso and short legs. The fatigues pants were what I would consider the perfect length.
half of these i just cuffed so you could see the boots better
Tapered pants or not depends on shoe size. My shoe size is US 8.5 in IR and wide pants looks pretty bad..
Same here, I'm US8 in IR's, so a mild taper or a slim straight looks balanced, definitely nothing over an 8.5" leg opening.
