In three years, I went from having absolutely no experience in 3D Animation to working at DreamWorks Animation Studios to teach just about all of the 3D software we use- and I'm not done yet!

Amazing work.
This guy has taken his time and expert talents with 3D software and PS to show how he made such a fantastic final image. Explaining lighting, shadows and right down to how he added creases to the cushions.
Everything he did to make this photo should be teaching us all that it is not just a simple case of copy n pasting something in photoshop. There was so much more to this as he proved. With great tips such as using a 360 degrees photo for getting the lighting perfectly matched for the 3D character to the scene.
To me, I say well done and thank you for not only taking your time to explain what you did, but also for sharing all those great tips to help others who are interested.
Imagine animated movies

They make it CGI. Everything that the CGI character touches is modelled digitally.
Imagine how they made cartoons back in the day... mad!
3D tracking and mocap would've automated half of this process
Its different now a days
I went to animation school (classical 2d) and it took me 2 weeks, 10 to 12hr days to animate a 1.5min shit cartoon. No sound no color. Obviously a pro could do it better and faster. But that's about 2160 pictures you have to draw minimum. If you have multiple characters or background animation it'll take more. Then you have to digitize them (we had a mount with a camera) which means taking a pic of each drawing and running them at 24 frames a second only to find out you messed up and have to redraw certain frames. Good times

I can do basic stuff in raster and vector-based editing apps such as CorelDraw, GIMP, Inkscape and so on, but your work, is really accomplished stuff. I very much enjoyed the small details, such as the slight red reflection of the game controller in 'Jules' 's right hand, and the reflection of the lighting on his teeth, and of course the attention to proper shadows.
Ghosting yourself in was genius, never seen that being done before 👌 Great render also 👍🏼👍🏼

+Peter Kerkvliet oh, I almost forgot to answer the second part. I used Arnold renderer, it's built into Maya 2017 and 2018 and it's really easy to learn and use. That'll probably end up being a video too 😋

hi i have a question im 37 and i would like to become a 3d animator ive started teaching myself blender and next semester im planning on going to my local community college to study there 3d animation program do you have any advice
That's awesome! My advice is to find a mentor. Connect with others who are also focused and passionate- talk to your peers. Get feedback and learn from others to speed up your own education! Also check out AnimatedBuzz - it's an animation social network :)
