It's a great album, you have to be an AC/DC fan to really appreciate it, it didn't have the flashy hit songs, it was a ballsy, bluesy, hard rock album. The formula doesn't change much with those guys but that's why I love them, they always got my foot tapping. 9/10 for me, my second favorite Brian Johnson album, behind Back in Black.

I love "Flick of the Switch". It is far better than "For Those About to Rock" in my opinion. I give it a 9.5 out of 10.

    • @gwts1171

Agree. I gave it an 8, but "For Those About To Rock" is one of my least favorite of the pre-90s albums. I'd give that one a 3/10, and that's all for the title song. The rest felt like outtakes from "Back In Black" to me.

Although an Australian band, AC/DC were never visually influenced by the biggest Australian influence on the 80's aesthetics: "Mad Max 2". Billy Idol, Kiss, Motley Crue, everybody was doing post-apocalypse videos by 1982/1983, not AC/DC. No wonder they named an album "Blow Up Your Video".

If you're a fan 🤚.....you know this album very well, because, ya know, ya listened to it and realized it's brilliant. They had to rush it, but artist often do their best work when you squeeze 'em. The great ones do, anyway.

I think Nick was on-point ... OVERLOAD! (At least that was my experience.) After HTH, BIB and FTATR, I needed a break. Years down the road I appreciate and love it.

I’d heard that Flick Of The Switch had been coming out around the time of a very important doctor appointment ( to clear my return to go back to Junior High after my second bout of ulcers), and my mom let me buy the album after the appointment. And, as far as AC/DC being Heavy Metal, even Angus Young says that they were never Heavy Metal, but more Rock And Roll.

31:03 "I do not understand why Back In Black sold double diamond."
Much like I do not understand your strange statement.
    31:07
"But is it one of the best album ever released in the rock genre?"
Yes, it sure is. If not the absolute best.
10 phenomenal tracks, none of which would get a lower rating than 4.5/5.
It has one of the greatest vocal performances ever on a rock album.
It has some of the greatest guitar riffs ever in any genre.
It's tough to come up with stronger singles than this album has.
Every instrument is performed to perfection with a lot of edge.
    The production is spectacular.
I could go on and on.

I'm giving it an "8", which is in line with the panel's rating. I do think Jamie's criticisms are all totally spot on, but I'm ranking it higher because of it's banger production. It sounds just like the Mutt albums; really their last great production/sound, so for that I'm giving it a higher ranking although the songwriting/riffs really are not up to their standard up to that point.

I'm a 7/10 on this. It's a solid album, as is FTATR, but just ;lacks classic cuts, although Guns For Hire is a gem. It kind of came and went when I was younger. I come in at Highway to hell and worked backwards then forwards so it was al of of DC at the time!

9 out of 10. I was huge fan since 1979...but when this was released I didnt purchase it. I was more into Maiden, Thrash, etc. I didnt hear it until 1985 when a friend let me borrow the cassette and i was BLOWN AWAY , full of great songs, crunchy riffs. One of my favorite AC DC from Brian era.

Great album but I'm an AC/DC diehard. I will say that when I was a kid people didn't like that album so I took their word that it wasn't that great and didnt check it out for a long time. Now I think it really holds up to being a classic AC/DC record! Just not as played to death as BIB. As far as AC/DC being old hat in the 80's cause they were not photogenic Glamsters. Well they stuck to their guns and grinded it out and there is something to say for that, right? They had a massive resurgence in the 90's and I think it's probably a different conversation in other countries as far as all the albums after BIB being classics or not.

There are only two things I like about this album. Side A and Side B. I’d give it a 9/10 and it is nearly as good as Back in Black in my mind and may overtake it someday. I love the sparse rehearsal type music videos and they fit the songs perfectly. My favorite tracks are Rising Power, Flick of the Switch, Nervous Shakedown, Guns for Hire, Bedlam in Belgium, and Badlands. Badlands almost has a Deep Purple Blackmore/Lord combo riff and includes a little more unique solo from Angus. A heavy, back-to-basics album.

9/10. I think it all depends on where you come in with bands as well. This was my first AC/DC album and I really wasn't that familiar with them. I remember the "For Those..." video and HATED that song. This album just clicked with me at the time(I bought Born Again this year too). Funnily enough, the video for "Flick" is what got me to get this cassette and into AC/DC. So I have all the Bon Scott albums and then my Brian Johnson era starts with "Flick" and ends with "Who Made Who"... I don't have "Fly" anymore and don't like any albums after that. "Flick" is my favorite Brian Johnson era album. Production never bothered me.

I will start by saying I am an AC/DC fan...not a casual listener as a couple of guests appear to be. With that I concur with those whom regard this as the best Johnson era. It certainly is my fav Brian Johnson release. 9/10! Similarly to Martin, (my theme reflects my vocalist preference obviously) it's Powerage #1, Highway to Hell #2, Dirty Deeds #3, Let There Be Rock #4, High Voltage #5, then Flick @ #6, Back #7, and then ...About To Rock #8 and the remainder I can't rank. Great video guys! 🤘⚡️🎶🤘

"Flick of the Switch" is definitely my favorite Brian Johnson album. Then again, not much of the AC/DC catalog appeals to me after "Fly on the Wall." I pretty much loathe songs that classic rock radio has played to death, hence my love for his album. There isn't a track that my local classic rock radio station would dare play off this album.

  • @thestevec
    @thestevec 2 года назад

The song Flick of the switch is catchy enough to have been at least a minor hit. Had they made a proper music video to it it would have greatly increased its chances. Sadly they wouldn't embrace the form until the next album. Nervous Shakedown however just isn't the sort of song that radio would ever play on high rotation. I like it but it's not a song for the masses.

IMO, Flick of the Switch is a much stronger album that For Those About to Rock. FOTS should have been the follow up to BIB. it's always been my stance that FTATR sold well simply on the momentum from BIB but it was such a boring album that fans began finding their hard rock (and heavy metal) fixes elsewhere. I give Flick an 8 out of 10.

  • @nocturnal-io9vq

I like "Flick Of The Switch," but it has flaws. I would give it a 7, maybe 7.5. I'm glad the band decided to make a "stripped-down" record without Mutt Lange, but I think the problem is: you can't make a "Powerage" sounding record with '80s equipment and technology. The drums suffer the most; they have an odd, clanky-clunky sound with a sort of muted-treble effect, sounds like they recorded the album in an aluminum shed. Also - I think the reason this album had no hits was because (hate to say it), the songwriting is just not there. Almost all of the panelists commented on the repetitive nature of the chorus on each song; Brian Johnson just screams the title of the song over and over again. I also think the band picked the wrong time to do a "stripped-down" record. I think Mutt Lange did the right thing with AC/DC - he gave them a big, powerful yet accessible sound, but didn't overproduce them like he did with Def Leppard. The MTV side-discussion is also very interesting. It was about this time that Quiet Riot and Twisted Sister became HUGE because of MTV. But I remember my friends did not like the videos for "Flick" and (I think?) Rising Power. "It's just them standing there playing the songs." Not the flashy, cool or scripted kind of thing that caught the attention of kids. Despite these criticisms, I think "Flick" is an enjoyable and strong record. I'd love to see you guys do a discussion of "Fly On The Wall." Now THAT'S a drinking album!

This album was a massive disappointment to me when it came out , didn’t like it then and don’t like it now . Obviously loved BIB and thought For those about to rock was a very worthy follow up . Flick of the switch to me demonstrated that the song writing had dried up and never really recovered apart from two or three songs per album . Personally I think Bon was a flawed genius and once he’d passed and remnants of what he’d written were used up and then it was pretty much done

@@aquabot yes but this is not MICY DEES, this is an album we're talking about and again one of the biggest of all time, people love the older stuff, like this one, and many like the stuff that came after but , let's be real if we did a deep dive into this catalog-most love the earlier stuff and this album would rank at the top or near the top as opposed to any album that came after back in black or say For those about to rock.

You cant compare affordable, unhealthy food to recreational purchases like an album. It’s not even comparable to people who buy all movies in the set of a series, because even if it sucks, i have to own it. I would say a lot of interest was because Bon died and they wanted to here the new guy. It also just happened to have a couple killer tracks on it.

Hardcore AC/DC fan here. For me, I have mixed feelings about Flick. It's the first album where everything really starts to sound the same. Yet, this is the last album where the band is firing on all cylinders. Brian sounds great. And it is unrelenting for it's 30+ minutes. Even on the slower tracks. Future albums would have higher highs, but also lower lows.
I would give it a 7/10. There are future albums I like better, mostly due to having a handful of more stellar tracks, but it is an album where I only skip one song. What song is that? Guns For Hire. To me, this is one of the worst songs they have ever done. The riff is uninspired and it seems they are just trying to carry that For Those About To Rock gun theme on.
