honestly, i'd say el capitan is one of if not THE best OS you can have on these older macs. it's fast, responsive, modern programs work, and your fans don't kick up.
@@Roshikiki for 2012 devices and later, i'd actually recommend mojave. el capitan support's quickly fading but MOST still support mojave. if your bother relies on 32-bit applications, use high sierra since mojave breaks compatibility with some games.
I have a MacBook Pro Mid-2009 running El Capitan (which is the last supported macOS version on this Mac), and I would say it's still semi-usable. Since Safari sucks on this macOS nowadays, I had to use Chrome, and it's okay at best. Almost all of my programs I use on my Windows laptop works here, and it works fine but it's not the best experience I get (honestly what can I even expect). Best bet if you wanna use old versions of macOS, I'd probably just recommend something like High Sierra or Catalina.
32 months later and things are now far worse for El Capitan. Web browsers no longer support it, so many websites do not load correctly. Discord does not work unless one has an older version of the app, but it tends to update automatically so it's a no-go too. I'm afraid the world has moved on from our old favorite, El Capitan.
I'm using El Capitan on a 2010 vintage MacBook, and a 27" refurbished iMac, late 2012, 2.9GHz, Intel core i5, 8GB, 1600 MHz DDR3, NVDIA GeForce GTX 660M 512 MB. Reason I haven't upgraded is that I will lose use of a scanner and significant software if I upgrade. One thing that really bugs me about El Capitan is it splits the screen into 2 or 3 windows and it's a pain to get it back. Right now I'm dealing with Mail crashing the minute I open the app, so am cleaning out the library. Thanks much for this video!
I'm still running OS X El Capitan on a 2008 Unibody 13" Macbook. Still usable, though browsing the net is a bit hit and miss since most modern browsers aren't compatible with it.
Noice! I'd recommend using a patcher tool to at least install macOS High Sierra! That version runs great on systems like that, and adds a lot of software compatibility!
I'm using it because I got an old (2007) Imac running again that had a burned out power supply. Suddenly several websites I regularly visit now pops up with "Your Connection Is Not Secure". Could that be be because of El Capitan or is it an ISP issue?
I have Mac OS X El Capitan 10.11.6 on an ancient MacBook Pro from mid-2007. It still runs well after 17 years and is still kind of usable, but it’s very slow .
I am using OS X El Capitan 10.11.6 on a mid 2009 iMac. I just updated my Canon 6D to a 5D Mk iv and the problem I have encountered is that when I import my Raw files from the 5D Mk iv I cannot view the Raw thumbnails like I could with the 6D. I can still edit in Lightroom and Camera Raw etc but the problem is I can’t choose with ones to edit as all I see is a blank CR2 thumbnail. Has anyone encountered this or have a solution to this? Thank you for taking the time to read this.
I started getting on mac with Yosemite, then soon El Cap on my old MacPro 2.1. I sold the 2.1 and got into PowerPc for a while, then bought a 5.1 that was running el cap but then my ssd died and my gpu was then sold. Lol. So I was stuck running high sierra. I then found a cMP 4.1 with a gt120 a couple days ago, I’m now able to reinstall 10.11 on my 5.1. Reason is I do music as a hobby, El Cap is a nice middle ground for my software without the need to buy newer license.
I have an early 2009 imac running el capitan. I often have a few windows open at once so I can compare informations. I scoot some out of the way, back and forth, comparing info in the various windows. Every now and then I scoot a window too far I guess, and without warning an entirely different desktop background screen appears with some different windows on it and all the other windows I was looking at are gone too. Then I have to try to recall what I just did to try to undo it and bring back the windows i was looking at. This 'feature' really bugs me to put it politely. Anyone know the name of this? and how I can make it stop ? I suppose whoever came up with this thought they were really clever.
Not always true, the MacBookPro3,1 nor the iMac7,1 support anything higher than this, the CPU is too old. Devices that have been patched to run El Capitan are also affected by this, as they will have too old of CPUs to update higher.
Hi, is it kay to continue to use El captial in 2023 if there are no issues at all. My use is Basic like minimal ms office, surfing, data transfer. Whats better to upgrade or not in general.
Hey! I’m thinking of moving from high sierra to El Capitan on my late 2009 iMac for legacy program support. I am also considering dual booting high sierra and 10.8 mountain lion. Which one would you suggest?
It depends on what applications you need! I’ve noticed that Yosemite and earlier has less restrictions, since those versions don’t have SIP, and Mountain Lion would be great for lots of older apps, especially ones that don’t like the Post Maverick UI change. If you don’t want to choose, you could always triple boot all of them, too! :D
@@MattsTech thanks for replying so fast! The only program I really want to run is haloMD, the Mac halo ce project. It supports up to El Capitan. Yes, there are ways to update it all the way up to macOS Monterey, though it’s a bit complicated. If you have GarageBand on a different device, you can download the last compatible version on older Macs. :)
You need to adjust the date and time back before a certain date in the setup, you’ll have to use the terminal, and I don’t remember the command, so Googling it should help you. I usually set it to a date before 2018.
This problem happened to me, he solved it as he said through the time machine, it must be changed through the Terminal tool when installing, but I forgot the code. You can search on RUclips
I've got a 2007 iMac with El Capitan 10.11.6, and I can't use my Canon pixma ts3522 version printer. I'm not savvy, so I have no clue why I can't DL, the software and can't figure out if there's a work around
I have an 17" Macbook Pro running El Capitan. It's slooow. But I want to use it to surf (Amazon, RUclips, Gmail) the web in my workshop. My concern is security. Are there any risks worth noting? The computer doesn't support installing Sierra.
I think you'd be fine with security, since macOS doesn't really have that many exploits compared to Windows, so updating isn't as bad as a concern. However, I'd suggest moving away from that OS as soon as you can, whether that be that you buy a new Mac or PC, or your forcibly install a newer version of macOS on your machine. Let me know if you want to pursue the latter, I can give you some help. :)
Still using it in 2024 on a firmware-flashed late-2009 Mac Pro 5.1 with 32Gb RAM and 6TB of storage. Still run Tiger on my 2005 PowerBook! Gonna try updating to Catalina which is actually the last version of OS X (although just named macOS, it was still a 10.x version, before going to macOS 11, Big Sur), and see if it is stable enough for regular use. Maybe that way I can finally update my ancient Firefox and Chrome browsers! Although they do both work sufficiently well for my needs, with a working RUclips adblocker on Firefox, I'm finding some 3rd party developers only issue utilities for 10.15 at the oldest.
macOS updates do not show up there, they showed up as app downloads when they were available. You’ll need to go to the downloads section on Apple’s website to download copies of older macOS versions.
Unsure of what model you have, but if you have a 1,1/2,1, then I would install El Cap (as you can’t go higher than that anyways). 3,1 or newer and I’d pick something newer than El Cap.

I'm having the same issue! I use it on a Macbook pro 2009
There’s a certificate signing issue, caused by old root certificates expiring earlier this year. There is a way to fix it, but I’ve not tried it.
Upgrade to Catalina
The 2007 iMacs do not support it without a CPU upgrade.
This is an issue with old iOS and MacOS versions the only way to "fix" it would be to manually install the new certificates
