#ChrisThile #TheElephantInTheRoom #LivefromHere
This is my favorite song of the week so far- clever lyrics, creative music, and of course a flawless performance. Chris could write musicals if he wanted to, this song proves that!
3:52 "I mentioned it once and I think I got away with it"
1:25 "Here he comes-tripety *trump*ety"
Ahhhh, "elephant"! Good catch!
He performed this live for us here in Kansas! He said he thought back in 2016 it would quickly lose relevance, but no... it has sustained. Except for the Cubs part lol.
Chris Thile: (after being interrupted by an elephant trumpet multiple times during his monologue)
Look, man, we get it. You’re an elephant, you’re in the room. It doesn’t mean you’re gonna get talked about, ok? (crowd cheers) Shh! (pleadingly)Don’t encourage him! Don’t encourage it! Ugh!
So anyway, it might be a touch awkward, during the cocktail and artichoke dip stages on Thursday, between the Lions and Cowboys games (elephant interrupts, Chris cuts him off) No. But I’m confident that by the time the turkey has achieved that perfect balance of overcooked white and undercooked dark meat, we’ll have all been reminded of how much we really do love these strange people. We are these strange people. Now please, in preparation, let’s bow our heads, and thank God for the three Thanksgiving “F”s: Food, Football, and
Song: “The Elephant in the Room”
Thank God for fermentation,
Fermentation for the wine,
Thank wine for conversation
with these relatives in-law of mine
Thank these relatives for you, babe,
Thank you for the bouncing boy,
doing the best that he can do to keep this
Family entertained as we navigate
the treacherous waters of talkin’ small
on this of all Thanksgivings
when even the weather can go from 0 to an all out brawl
in seconds, just listen:
“’Been kind of a warm November”
“God, you and the Climate Change again,
why you gotta be all doom and gloom?”
Whoo, boy! ‘least no one’s mentioned the giant elephant in the room.
(spoken) Whoops.
(Music changes to ‘Pink Elephants on Parade’ from Dumbo)
Don’t talk about the elephant in the room
Here he comes, trippety trumppety,
He’s been exhumed, the elephant in the room.
Its very nearly impossible to avoid
Making a Freudian slippety sloppety
Over you-know-whom, the elephant in the room
What’ll we do, what’ll we do,
when the pie and the football are through?
An uncle says, “I’m still with her!”
An aunt says, “Yeah, I feel the Bern!”
And so the mighty pachyderm says: (bass solo)
(spoken) You know what, I’ll translate:
It’s the autumn of our discontent
So for every “Woah, an elephant!”, there’s a
“Hey, respect your President!”
Til everyone’s covered in cranberry sauce,
being angrily tossed,
with the flick of a spoon,
we’re being consumed,
by the elephant in the room.
(whispered)The elephant…. The elephant…. The elephant…
(Mandolin interlude)
What can be done? What can be done?
(sfx: broken glass, music returns to original tune)
Thank God for fermentation,
Thank Fermentation for the wine,
Thank wine for conversation
with all these relatives in-law of mine, aww
Feels good to be together, whether
You think the world is ending soon,
Or about to get better, so when
The bottles being passed, better fill your glass,
Cheers, we’re in it for the long haul
on this of all Thanksgivings
when even our sports can go from zero to an all out brawl
in seconds, be careful:
“Have you ever spent time in Cleveland?” “NO!”
“South Side of Chicago?” “NO!”
“St. Louis?” “NO!”
“Ever heard about a fellow named Ricketts?” “YES!”
“Anything to do with his politics?” “NO!”
How ‘bout them Cubs?
(spoken) Oh, how ‘bout them Cubs, Denver?
Just don’t you mention a giant elephant,
I mentioned it once and I think I got away with it,
Just say, “Hey, what giant elephant in the room?”
The real hero here (thanks!)
I never tire of hearing Chris and Aoife singing together - wonder if they'll ever do a whole album together (maybe with Sarah Jarosz too)...
I must have watched this video 30 times, but I still get stressed that Richard Dworsky won't get his melodica ready in time...
This song makes me glad that my family is politically homogenous. We are all right and we know it... so we can just sit back and enjoy the holiday. Wish I could be back with them this year.
As relevant this Thanksgiving week in 2023 as it was in 2016, sadly.
To Mister Keillor:
We feel your hand on the wheel.
Thank you for the show!
The genius of this piece is only matched by the beautiful adaptation for the album ("Thanks for listening" - Chris Thile)
I'm actually really sad the middle part of this didn't make it into the released version of this song. Regardless, always amazing work from this crew. You guys were killing it in 2016, killing it now, and I'm looking forwards to everything you'll do n in the years to come. Y'all are awesome.
Wonderful! The same good-natured humor and clever songwriting that I've always loved about APHC. I keep listening to this song and it just keeps making me smile , especially how "Pink Elephants" from Dumbo is woven in :-) I'm recommending this video for bookmarking to friends who may need to privately slip away from political discussions and take a little chuckle-break at upcoming holiday family gatherings!
Bravo! Personally I was considering take out this holiday season.
I love it! Thank you and pass the fermentation!
I think Chris Thile is great.
"Here he comes-tripety *trump*ety" !
Still works 6 years later.
I missed this weeks broadcast because I was at a Sarah jarosz concert.
One of the few good reasons to miss it.
Um, I HATE PHC. HATE IT. This song may have turned me around. MAY HAVE.
Dude how can you HATE PHC?
We just don't believe you. When you care enough about the show to really "HATE IT", get back to us. Happy Thanksgiving!
Brilliant! This show is getting better fast.
How about them cubs?! 😁
Wow, what a fricking GREAT song!
I'm so excited for this to finish processing!
Does anyone know where to find that jumpsuit??
Does anyone know the lyric after "...as we navigate the treacherous waters of talking small"?
Nevermind, I think it's "on this of all Thanksgivings"
What a batch of culture!
"I'm like an elephant. I walk in a room and everyone's like, okay, he's in there." -Tom Haverford
Great musicians having fun!
Gotta love the Fawlty Towers shout out.
I missed it. What was it?
Haha "I mentioned it once, but I think I got away with it!" - Basil says that verbatim when he mentions the war to the Germans after he gets concussed - he passed out from the fire extinguisher going off in his face.
And the tune from Dumbo.
LOL!
This is great! Can you add the lyrics?
I can’t get enough of this song.
Hiya all Did Chris and the band write this or is this an oldish tune.
The elephant part us from the Dumbo movie, lol (which is about an elephant).
Quality
hipster fodder.
