I am a fan of both the Beach Boys and Live From Here, and I have to say this version of Surf's Up is stunning. It is an incredibly difficult song to cover, and these musicians did it with their great talent and obvious reverence for the music, the original group, the composer and the lyricist. Well done, Chris Thile, I'm With Her, Ben Folds and the Live From Here house band. And well done Brian Wilson, Van Dyke Parks and the Beach Boys!
This is a superb rendition of a really difficult song to cover. Congratulations to Chris and his band for this memorable performance of a Beach Boys classic.
Well done Chris. This was recorded up in Tanglewood (Lenox, MA) on June 15th., 2019. Brian Wilson was to perform Pet Sounds the following day (Fathers Day June 16) yet the show had been cancelled due to Brians illness. A fabulous tribute to BW and the Beach Boys harmony. Well done. I had tickets to both LFH and BW the following day. Surf's Up was a great surprise for me. Thank you Chris and Crew!
This thoughtful performance led me down a rabbit hole of wonderful musical archaeology to Brian Wilson's original 1966 solo demo of this song. So grateful!!!
Can't stop listening to this! I still remember my first listen to SMILE in 2004. We will miss you, Serena Brook! What a way to go out on your last show!
This was performed to honor composer Brian Wilson's birthday, which, appropriately, is June 20th, at the summer solstice. I'm so glad Brian's still around to celebrate his birthday!
Life From Here Thank you for this channel. I love how geeky and full of talent and beauty the show is. To be part of something like this is a musician's dream. I wish someday I can live in an artistic kind of family like this. And Chris is a genius!
These guys, Chris Thile etc, have caught the essence of Brian Wilson's most perfect creation, Surf's Up. This is a wonderful sound. Not yet perfect, but that will never be achieved, even by Brian at his time. I love the ending.
I can't get the music from this last episode out of my head... between this and Im With Her... WOW!!! IWH is one of the most underrated bands out there!
Punch Brothers have also done an excellent live version: ruclips.net/video/BapL4OlGImE/видео.html Very happy to see Chris Thile perform this song again. I'm With Her was the perfect addition!
I can't stop listening to this! Wonder why Brian Wison didn't do harmonies on the high parts in the first section on his original? It's intoxicating...
Out of everything that ended with the pandemic, live with here is probably what I miss the most
But those folk came up with some incredible work. It does feel like an end of an era, and I hope it comes back in some form.
Someone's gotta make fun of the Opry!

Blown away - thank you for doing justice with Brian Wilson's opus, Surf's Up... one of the most striking songs out there.
He hit the high note! Dang! 👏👏👏👏👏👏
Yes he did! Twice!
He drifts in and out of Brian’s and Carl’s versions like a strand of DNA. So great.
The day this program left the airwaves was a dark one indeed. I miss it completely.
His voice captures the vulnerability of Brian's original perfectly! A brilliant performance!
Carl sang the original.. just like “good vibrations”.
@@buddyblackmon7405 I was referring to Brian's original piano demo. It was featured in a program by Leonard Bernstein back in the day.
What more proof does anyone need of Brian’s genius?? Another person covering it and I still sat watching and listening with my mouth open...
Dave Garcia World Yes, I love this song, I cry when I hear this lots of memories.
Seems that Chris enjoys singing this song a great deal. With his voice, how could he not? What a piece of music.
The talent on this stage is simply astounding. What a touching performance.❤️
This is a superb rendition of a really difficult song to cover. Congratulations to Chris and his band for this memorable performance of a Beach Boys classic.
The original and the ‘04 Brian Wilson “Smile” remake always make me weep. So did this!
The only song to ever bring a tear to my eye the first time I listened to it. A masterpiece .

I don't know any of these performers , but I do know "Surfs Up"- and this is spectacular!

Great Cover of one of the best Songs ever!
God bless Mr. Brian Wilson!
Hats off to Mr. Mike Love
Beautiful. The Vince Gil version is amazing too
Thile and I'm With Her's vocal virtuosity and the brilliance of rhe composition leave me SPEECHLESS!
Critter's background/counterpoint vocals are superb...
The standout performance of an already amazing show. "Surf's Up" is my favorite Beach Boys/Brian Wilson song, and this rendition nailed it.
The musicians make the music the engineers create the mix. This is perfect! Chris Thile is in a class all by himself.
Probably my favorite Brian Wilson song, and this is a great version
Brian is my favorite composer, and Chris, one of the world’s greatest musicians. Match made in heaven
You always remember where you were when you first heard this song!
man Thile can sing anything... love his vocal tone and the way he can belt notes. great backup crew here as well
Stunning vocal..and the girls voices are an interesting surprise on this classic piece...fantastic effort
Excellent and it makes me think how immortal Brian's work is.
Can't stop listening to this! I still remember my first listen to SMILE in 2004.
We will miss you, Serena Brook! What a way to go out on your last show!
Lord have mercy that was simply breathtaking.
Literally gave me chills. Well done!
Goosebumps! Absolutely amazing.
If it was possible to upvote more than once I would.

Wow! You did it! That was gorgeous and moving and lovely
Brian sent me here. Phenominal cover ❤
Beautiful version.
my favorite Beach Boys album . . . great choice & beautiful version . . .
Brilliant!
Very difficult to sing this suite
Great performance
Beatles-like to a certain extend
Excellent
I like to think of it as the Beatles are more Beach Boy-like. If you think about it, Brian Wilson kind of paved the way for them to move forward.
Advertising aside, what a wonderful performance.
Props to the guitar player doubling the melody with Chris.

As I said four years ago, every time I watch this, it makes me cry
I’m with you on this! Superb, sublime, simple beauty. Chokes me up.
My God, My God...this is just lovely. Thnax for posting
Four Mike Love fans watched this video.
Now 10 :(
Adam, you're crazy. I can't believe a thumbs down either, but there's no such thing as a Mike Love fan.
@@mikebrison1838 If there's one thing that unites us all, it's that Mike Love sucks.
This made me cry like the original..... a religious experience....

Fantastic
Sublime
They were a great band too!
SO SO great!!
Wish I had been exposed to this work of art when I was young….would have def changed my musical tastes
The end is supposed to say "A child is the father of the man". They say "A child is the man a father of".
The attempt at closed captioning is hilarious.
oh my god i turned it on because if this comment and i'm losing it... "awaken to assault assault assault [Music]"

Once again superlative.

pretty much nailed guys - so tricky
wait a sec . . . forgot about Pet Sounds . . . OK maybe my 2nd favorite BB album . . .
I have such a crush on Sarah Jarosz.
Nice backup singers
Well done....and I was not a big Beach Boys fan.
Please confirm, always wondered are back up singers singing My God, My God beginning of song? Excellent cover of another Brian Wilson masterpiece
"Bygone, bygone"
I think they are saying bygone, bygone.
Great performance of course but I wish I'm With Her had sung the "father of the man" refrain.
He reminds me of The dude from rem
Bet that took a bit of practice.
what's up with the heavy back beat??? NO. It's messing up my head man!! The emphasis is on ONE.
1 person is a disgrace to humanity and I dislike them
Goddam, I was enjoying that until the announcements started. How to ruin something great! 🤬
Absolute disgrace advertising through this.
