I love this - Sam Bush is the master - one of the fathers of Newgrass. And I'm sure Chris Thile looked up to him as he was coming up in the tradition. What I like to see - the Elders handing it on down to the next generation . . . a legacy of continuance . . .
It’s amazing to see the difference in technique between these two amazing artists. Regarding movement of the pick hand and fingerprint, Chris Thile is a “minimalist”:and Sam Bush can only be described as a “maximist” yet both are tight and get full projection from their efforts. A pleasure to watch and listen to.

Um find another person on the planet that can play as well as Thile. Go ahead well wait after you do a deep dive of his work. The guy is a prodigy and was so good at 13 professional musicians were scared to play with him because they feared they would get destroyed and they would. As for Sam Bush he’s not on my mt Rushmore of mandolins but it’s not a contest. The dude is bad as they come in the bluegrass world. Both are unbelievable and Thile is from another planet.

Oh yeah telluride is a majestic. Cradle of a town that is surrounded by peaks. But u can hike right up. A lot of different places its magical. In winter even though its a bit chill Colorado isn't humid. So. Its. A refreshing chill Me and my band at the time (bizung family ) played at the Sheraton. Up yonder way so. Pleasant a town. There are no chain restaurants or commercial banners. All the places to eat are. Good though.
Telluride Bluegrass Festival - have a bit of a search, because there are some great full sets from there on RUclips, in particular the house band, which is basically a Who's Who of bluegrass luminaries!
I was at this set, back for the first time after 15 years.. Telluride is definitely necessary pilgrimage for anyone who loves bluegrass, nature, hiking, festivals, beer, dancing, or skiing. Or anyone with a soul. The views and the community are unbelievably beautiful.

I bought the collection 1000 Fiddle Tunes at a festival 51 years ago and found out that Brilliance combines parts of Trafalgar and Passaic. It has nothing to do with Brilliancu Medley, except the key is the same.

mrswimmyboy: This style came across the water from Scotland 150 - 200 years ago and is known as a “reel”. It landed solidly in Newfoundland and Cape Breton Island and is still a staple folk music genre in all three areas. It apparently also somehow found its way toTexas. But it is not bluegrass or new grass or anything like it. It’s a Scottish reel dating back hundreds of years. And yes, I agree, Mr Thomasson was very smooth at this style - very fun to listen to!
mrswimmyboy: I can’t disagree since I did mention Irish in my original comment, but the tempo seems a bit quick to qualify as the much slower traditional hornpipe. Fact is drunken Irish sailors couldn’t dance that fast, lol. Maybe Texans can, I’m not sure.
It can be done in several ways. I recorded ths tune with a 4 piece Bluegrass band in 1969. Howdy Forrester (from whose recording I learned the tune) recorded it with Jimmy Riddle on piano around 1960.
Is that really what a mandolin issupposed to sound like? Thilly ought to take up violin, he's too ggod for mandolin. Plus he has a rather annoying act.
My life is better for having spent 5:23 here. A smile, and a reminder that humanity still has a chance.
Chris Thile just always makes me smile.
One can watch this over and over and over. The sheer joy from both. Wonderful!!

@@BrainFPatterson I was not aware of that. Thank for the comment!
I have no idea how Sam does what he does. But it is just perfect!!
It took me 5 years to get this one up to speed and clean. Does my heart good to hear Sammy say it was hard too.
It's a toughy for sure, particularly to get it clean. Good for you!!!
Sam Bush is a national treasure.
Beautiful song.
How can you not love this?
How, indeed? If you like live, acoustic music played with heart, you have to love this performance.
Two of the greatest ever to strap on a mandolin.
This music always makes me happy, no matter what else is going on in the world!

amazing ,the sounds they can pull from these instruments!
Jolly amazing😊
this combo blows my mind.
That's was fantastic! May the Force be with us ALL! 😆
"The father of New Grass Music".
Phht, that should be John Hartford.
Absolutely joyful!
NO WAY these two are the BEST!!!!!

So great! Masters at work and having fun!
Nice picken and nice St Louis Cardinals jersey Sam ... Great video ... Thanks ...
i went through teluride, loved it.
Two of the very best at work. Allthey need is David Grisman and Andy Statman and they'd have a helluva quartet.
Saw Dawg, Sam, and Jesse Mcreynolds with Thile tacked on the end of the set one time. Bonkers!. Rockygrass 2008, I think.
Two of th greatest!
This tune as played comes from Howdy Forrester. The Eck Robertson version called "Brilliancy Medley" does not contain this tune.
Sounded awful like Howdy to me, too.
Damn straight!
Str8 up, BADASs right there🤦♂️💂♀️🙌🙏
Great stuff!
That was so metal
2 of the meanest mandolin pickers ever! Bush master and feely thile
Amazing
Telluride - someday I will go!
You have to! Get town park camping tickets trust me
My Summer mandolin lessons? Brilliant.not that I will be capable....but thank goodness for slow down playback!...maybe.
Brilliant!

I'm going to telluride bluegrass fest for the first time this year! So stoked!
Any tips from anyone that has been before?
yeah, sell me a ticket lol they're sold out man!!
@@Johny2by30 StubHub has some at face value!
Extraordinary . ..
Chuck Norris and Derren Brown out here crushin!
Slow playback is awesome bc if I try to play along at normal speed I end up playing some other fiddle tune every time.
Excelente!!!
basic RUclips comment: I see Sam Bush, I click

Great, "refined" picking, in harmony, yet ;)
I used to be in love with Sam Bush

Wow!
If they keep practicing, they might get good.........
Let's hope they keep practicing, and we get to listen.
David Hopkins ????
OK that was funny
wow
Music starts at 2:48
You can Thile has a ton of respect for Sam
Am I the only one who starts twerking and shaking the ground when the song hits?...nah just me? Alright then you keep your secrets then.🤫
It's Count Olaf! He has a tattoo of an eye on his ankle!
OMG! OMG! OMG!!!!
Wow straight teeth man took by surprise
Saw the braces
Go Chris
Holy hell! The view at 5:08! What festival is this?
Telluride Bluegrass Festival - have a bit of a search, because there are some great full sets from there on RUclips, in particular the house band, which is basically a Who's Who of bluegrass luminaries!
Find a way to make it to this festival at least once in your life. Truly an amazing experience.

Music actually gets around to starting at 2:48.
Darren Dix too bad I was almost there by the time I saw this
I hate to ask this... But where was this and what was the festival?
They mentioned Teluride, Colorado.
So good my cat is moaning in pleasure.
Just made it up
Pick it, Sam! Pick it good!
Now all we need is Grisman lol :) jk. Awesome job.

We need some bass and guitar here.
Trafalgar Hornpipe derivative. See Cole's book.

Still bright eyed and" bushy" tailed
Both brilliant obviously, but Sam's playing is waaay more groovy. Listen to that swing!
Different players, I love how Chris seamlessly weaves his harmonies in with dynamics and accents. What a great duo
The only Bush worth a damn is Sam.
I wouldn’t exactly call this bluegrass or even new grass...it’s virtually an Irish lilt or a Newfoundland jig. But fun anyway!
Its a Texas style fiddle tune. Benny Thomasson was the greatest player in that style IMO
mrswimmyboy: This style came across the water from Scotland 150 - 200 years ago and is known as a “reel”. It landed solidly in Newfoundland and Cape Breton Island and is still a staple folk music genre in all three areas. It apparently also somehow found its way toTexas.

@@rayray8687- I'd call Brilliancy a hornpipe. It feels Irish rather than Scottish.

Amazing! Call me Or have your advisor call me for concert y0☆u
M! You're freaking amazing
Serious kid stuff..not me mmmmm
Chris Thile talks too much.
He is the host of the festival so it’s kinda his job.
Its a national radio show for these two hours, and yes, you need to follow a script and talk to your guests.
Clearly, I'm being a jerk, troll, and embarrassingly bitter. I'm a huge Chris Thule fan. My apologies.
J Corwin Russell Chris is amazing. What a player!
@@pimtroost9388 I agree. I saw him play with Brad Mehldau in Indianapolis. It was brilliant.
But, I wouldn't want to go to the after party. Js. :-/
Chris Thile is a sickening human being. Brilliant musician, but everything else about him makes me puke. Sam Bush rocks!
Dang! What'd he do?
